The Boy from Brooklyn (marvel one-shot)

PreviousNext

The hike up the mountain was freezing, and Bucky was colder than he wanted to be.

His blue coat was built more for combat and flexibility than warmth. His heart pounded steadily beneath the silvery tags around his neck. The wind bit sharply at his nose, and he wished the commandos had brought some sort of scarves or masks to keep out the chill.

And yet, even as his legs began to ache from the climb, and conversation steadily slowed to a heavy silence, he felt a spike of warmth when he glanced ahead at Steve.

Bucky felt a smirk tug at his lips. He was so proud of that kid, so stupidly proud. He’d watched him grow up, watched his character shape into the person he was today. And Bucky had grown up right alongside him.

But maybe the title of kid didn’t fit Steve quite as well as it did when he was all skin and bones. Now he was tall, strong, and wore his pride as deeply as he’d always felt but was unable to show before.

Ahead, Steve stumbled slightly into a snow drift, causing the soldiers to give a chorus of rough laughter and playful taunts.

Scratch that. Maybe Steve was still the little kid Bucky remembered. Visually, he had changed, but his heart remained the same, true and strong.

The men neared the top of the ridge, overlooking the snowy train tracks below. The sun was dim, blocked by thick, low-set clouds of white and snow.

Bucky gritted his teeth, ignoring the sweat gathering on his brow, and the fact that his heart raced faster than the subways back home. He hated heights.

He turned heel sharply, and helped fasten the zipline cable to the rock face, making sure it held fast.

“Watch it, Barnes,” Dugan jabbed playfully. “Wouldn’t wanna slip, would we?” He grinned.

Bucky let out a half-hearted laugh. “Yeah…wouldn’t wanna do that.”

A fist punched him in the shoulder, making him flinch slightly in surprise.

Jim Morita held up his hands momentarily in mock surrender. “Wanna get some drinks later?” he called over the sound of the sudden winds.

“I’m gonna have so much that I forget this miserable day,” Dugan shouted back.

Steve gave the signal to circle up and the others did so.

Bucky hesitated, watching them follow the brother he’d grown up with. The man he once called kid, back when they played in the streets of Brooklyn for far too long into the night hours.

And…Bucky sighed. He wasn’t ready for this.

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!

Shalt we commence with the deranged S’more?

Top Graham Cracker - Bucky Barnes sees Steve, all grown up and ready to fight. Or is he? Bucky is not too sure about that as he still feels worried about the future, about what is to come.

Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - I have no recommendations to make as of right now, but if you would like to edit this, then you may.

Chocolate Bar - I love how you described Bucky’s amazement with the man Steve had become. He’s proud of Steve but still sees the kid in him. I don’t know much about Marvel, but I enjoyed this all the same. My favorite part is when Steve stumbles and Bucky sees him as the kid he once was, it’s very cute to see.

Closing Graham Cracker - Overall, a lovely one shot! I need to brush up on my Marvel lore, but I have a feeling that something crazy is about to happen. Like what if Steve and Bucky grow apart? That would be sad to see. I’ll read more if you ever continue this and…

Scary Creepmas to you!!!

Thank you for the review!! I love this method, I'll have to try it myself sometime. And haha, yeah something really bad is about to happen. In the first Captain America movie if you're interested.

I like the beginning a lot, it's a smooth entrance to your story and very easy to read. Got an immediate feel for the situation your characters are in :)
I didn't quite like the line abt the heart beating under the dogtaga, that was a bit too cheesy for me I especially like this line: "steadily slowed to a heavy silence" because I can do imagine this!

Ohhhh I like the insight that Bucky has into Steve. I wouldn't have imagined Steve wearing his pride like that, he seems very humble. But Bucky might think differently, wouldn't call it confidence here, which is v interesting!

Also love the faster than subway description! Feels so tailored to where Bucky comes from :3

Oh the end had a double meaning for me. Kinda a) he's not ready to watch Steve become a leader or b) he's in his own memories and savouring this one last good moment before the terror that comes next.

All in all, I like it a lot :)

Thank you! I really appreciate your review. And in this context, I thought of pride as more of a pride Steve has in his beliefs, rather than the vain kind.
