A young girl sits and gazes out of her window at the playing children. Her rare amethyst eyes remain cold and analytical as the door opens and she turns to the person who just entered, tucking her blonde hair behind her delicate ears as she did so. Kaylie, the care worker, stood there quietly, looking around the room for something. The young girl’s name is Kassie. She lost her parents when she was only 3 years old but she saw them die so that moment haunts Kassie. Kassie was brought to the orphanage a day after her parents death and was much more cold and secluded than she was now. Kaylie walks over and Kassie glances at her wearily. Kaylie gives her a pink hearing aid and Kassie slips it into her right ear because when Kassie was born, she was half-deaf in her right ear.
“Come downstairs, Kassie.” Kaylie says kindly now she knows Kassie will hear her clearly. “There is a nice family here.” She adds, in the faint hope that it will encourage Kassie to come downstairs.
“I…would rather stay here, Kaylie.” Kassie wrote down and Kaylie sighed a little. “Nobody wants someone like me, a worthless mute.” Kassie scribbled quickly and Kaylie stood up.
“That’s not true.” Kaylie mutters.
Kaylie left and Kassie holds the notepad on her lap close. Since arriving here 12 years ago, Kassie had yet to say a single word, or even make a noise. When guests came she would act happy and smile and force her eyes to brighten at them, but it was all a farce.
Kassie heard the door open and a young girl with smooth brunette hair comes in and her brown eyes shine at the girl on the windowsill, who holds her notebook close. An older boy follows with scruffy brown hair and stares at the girl, before the girl points to Kassie.
“I want her as my sissy!” The young girl calls and Kassie looks over, her amethyst eyes lighting up slightly.
“Krystal! Let’s talk to her.” The boy told his younger accomplice and Kassie sits up, facing them on the windowsill. “My name is Damon and this is my little sister, Krystal.” Damon introduces them and Kassie smiles a little.
Kaylie comes in and freezes as she sees her fake smile and the slight fear underneath. Nobody ever went into Kassie’s room without Kaylie. And even then they never spoke to her as kindly as these children did!
“Ah, you’re the Quan couple’s children aren’t you?” Kaylie pipes up and they turn to her in shock. “This is Kassie, and I heard you make your own introductions.” Kaylie told them and Kassie slightly relaxed. “Nobody is allowed in this room alone for it is Kassie’s room.” Kaylie tells them firmly
“I’m terribly sorry, miss. My sister ran off and I went after her!” The boy cried and Kassie looked at Kaylie. “But you see, my sister seems to adore Kassie!” The boy explained quickly and Krystal tottere over to me.
“Listen, Kassie needs special care so I must ask you to either fetch you're parents or leave, please.” Kaylie tells them and Kassie looked to her.
“Is it time for me to visit the doctor yet, Kaylie?” Kassie scribbled and Kaylie nodded, then gently looped her arm around Kassie’s waist and Kassie linked her arm around her neck.
Kaylie helps Kassie out and the 2 children disappeared. Kaylie assists Kassie to the nurses office and the nurse comes out. Kassie has seen her plenty of times over the past years. Recently, Kassie’s legs had been especially painful after she was knocked to the floor after getting beaten up by a gang of girls that frequently bullied her since she had arrived there. The nurse sits Kassie down and feels her legs, then turns to Kaylie, who leaves quickly.
“Mr and Mrs Quan!” Kaylie calls and the couple turns to her from a crying boy. “I think your children have taken a liking to one of our children. Have they found anyone else?” Kaylie asks quietly and the couple frowns.
The woman has light brunette hair and brown eyes while her husband has dirty blonde hair and blue eyes. The two young children from before, Damon and Krystal, sit in the corner, whispering between them.
“No. They seem fixed upon a girl…Kassie I think her name is.” Mrs Quan tells her and Kaylie sighs. “Is she available?” Mrs Quan asks and Kaylie nods a little.
“Well, there are some key things you need to know about her.” Kaylie admits as she hears Damon and Krystal weep into each other. “She’s a mute and half-deaf in her right ear. Normally she can care for herself since she is 15 but sometimes may need some help in moving around.” Kaylie tells her quietly and then looks down. “She stays in her room here almost all day, watching the other children. She’s been adopted 28 times before, all for less than a week before they returned her. She puts on a happy face, but she’s hurt inside. In the 12 years she’s been here, she hasn’t said a word or made a noise.” Kaylie explains as the couple hold each other. “When she was a baby, her legs had been weak and unable to hold her. She recently got out of her wheelchair but finds it hard to walk alone. She does physiotherapy and takes various pain medications to help her with the pain in her legs. Again, she can take care of that herself.” Kaylie murmurs and then froze. “Oh dear, look I’ve rambled on! Let’s go meet her!” Kaylie cries and led them to her room, but it’s empty! “Please wait here, I’ll go fetch her from the nurse.” Kaylie tells them and leaves quickly.
“This girl sounds lovely.” Mrs Quan admits and Mr Quan smiles. “Sure, she’ll need some extra care but that’s fine with me.” Mrs Quan adds and the door opens.
Kassie looks at the two people in her room and Kaylie gets her to sit on the windowsill and Kassie feels awkward. Kaylie gives her a small cup with water in and two pills in her free hand. Kassie quickly takes them and then smiles up at her guests.
“This is Kassie.” Kaylie introduces her and Kassie sits back a little. “I’ll let you have some time together.” Kaylie tells them and leaves quickly as Mrs Quan comes over and Kassie keeps up her act.
“Hello, Kassie.” She greets kindly and she grips Kassies hand gently. “I see our children like you.” She adds and Kassie looks away, then glances out of the window.
“Well, I don’t often have visitors. I stay up here so I don’t waste people’s time.” Kassie wrote quickly and passes the sheet to Mrs Quan. “If you have questions, ask away!” She writes and Mr Quan walks over and Kassie looks up.
“Why don’t you talk?” Mr Quan asks and Kassie sits up and starts writing.
“When I was younger, my parents were killed in front of me. When I talk, I hear them screaming and feel guilty for some reason, so I learnt not to talk at all.” Kassie wrote quickly and showed him.
“Well, why do your previous adopted parents return you?” Mrs Quan asks and Kassie shrugs a little.
“I try to be nice, but they never like me. Maybe it’s...never mind!” Kassie wrote, then froze. “Do you have any other questions?” Kassie wrote as the door knocks and she can hear something odd.
“Oi, mutie!” A girl calls in and Kassie freezes. “Open the goddamn door!” The same girl calls and Kassie struggles to her feet and gets to the door and sits by it, writing a note and sliding it under the door and gets up, just to have the door slammed into her and she falls down. “Oi, mute! Who’s these?” She asks, her brown eyes glistening playfully. “I thought this room was off-limits. You’re a burden, Kassie. Get with it!” The girl tells her and Kassie nods sadly, rubbing her legs.
“They don’t want me anyway.” Kassie scribbled and the girl smirks.
“Go on, then. You don’t want a pathetic mute do you? She can’t do anything except look pretty!” The girl snaps and Kassie tries to get up to her elbows but the girl pins her down and the couple quickly rush over, but a glinting blade stops them.
The girl has shoulder length dirty brown hair that’s tangled and her face is darkened, as if possessed
She presses the knife to Kassie’s throat and Kassie blinks, then grabs her knife arm and shoves her off and pulls her arm around her back and the girl, Marissa, freezes. Kassie snatches the knife and quickly struggles over to her bed and pulls the emergency cord as Marissa runs at her and grips the knife again as Kaylie runs in and Kassie tries to get her off again, but now she’s holding her arms down. Kaylie comes over and injects Marissa with a blue liquid and Marissa falls down, unconscious. Kaylie lifts her down and helps Kassie up. Mr and Mrs Quan rush over and Kaylie turns to Kassie.
“Any idea why she attacked you?” Kaylie asks and Kassie looks away. “Kassie, why did she attack you?” Kaylie asks firmly and Kassie doesn’t look up.
Kaylie leaves with Marissa. Mrs Quan looks at Kassie as Mr Quan’s a little confused.
“Kassie?” Mrs Quan asks and Kassie looks to her with a false look of being alright. “How would you like to live with us? And with Damon and Krystal too?” She asks and Kassie put on a false smile and Mrs Quan hugs Kassie quickly, making Kassie tense a little.
Kaylie returns and the Quans let her know they want to adopt Kassie. Kaylie’s shocked, then leads them out and the nurse comes in quickly. Kassie looks away and the nurse comes over.
“I'm here to help you pack.” She tells her and Kassie looks around.
Kassie always wore the locket around her neck that used to be her mothers. The nurse opened her closet and put her clothes into a large shopping bag and Kassie leans under the bed to fetch her sandals, the only shoes she has. She often wears a light coloured dress beneath a white cardigan with white leggings. Today her dress was yellow.
-In the Office with Mr and Mrs Quan and Kaylie
Kaylie puts some papers on the desk and Mrs Quan works through them as Mr Quan thinks.
“Kaylie, was it?” He asks and Kaylie nods. “How did Kassie get that scar on her arm?” He asks and Kaylie froze.
“She never told me. Just wrote that I’d know when she gets better, but only if I could handle it.” Kaylie tells him and Mr Quan thinks. “Kassie’s very good, she’s just misjudged, Mr and Mrs Quan.” Kaylie tells them and they nod.
Mrs Quan finishes the paperwork and they leave to fetch Kassie. They enter and the nurse is helping her into her sandals. Kaylie walks over and Kassie looks up.
“Well, I guess this is goodbye, Kassie.” Kaylie tells her quietly and Kassie’s nervous. “You can trust these people. I don’t see anything wrong with them.” The last part Kaylie whispered and Kassie nods a little.
Kaylie helps her up and Mr and Mrs Quan help Kassie down the steps and into their car outside the orphanage, where the two younger children hug her!
Soon, Kassie’s new parents had arrived home, blissfully unaware they were being watched. They helped Kassie inside and the children followed quickly. They got her to sit down on the sofa in their front room and Kassie put her crutches down.
“This is where you will live now, Kassie.” Mrs Quan tells her and Kassie smiles. “You can call me Shelly if you don’t want to call me Mum.” Shelly tells her and Kassie looks around.
The front room was very pretty. There are photos of Damon and Krystal on the walls and there’s a wide window at the front of the room. The sofas are leather and sand coloured. The floor is vinyl and looks amazing! Shelly helps Kassie up to a pink room and Kassie freezes. It has pink wallpaper and a light pink carpet and pink bed sheets.
“This is Krystals room. I don’t think she’ll be leaving you alone for a bit.” Shelly teases and helps her into a purple room.
The walls are deep purple and the floor is a fluffy white carpet. There’s a wooden closet in the corner and there’s a desk at the foot of the bed and a few blank books on the desk. She sits Kassie down and Kassie’s in awe.
“This is your room. We only have a few rules and one of those is that if you want to go into someone else’s room, you have to have their permission so the others can’t disturb you if you need to sleep.” Shelly tells her and Kassie writes her thanks to her. “How are your legs?” Shelly asks and Kassie feels them.
“Just a little painful. The nurse overreacted but it does help with moving around.” Kassie writes in silence and Shelly smiles. “They’re close to healing fully now.” Kassie scribbles down then passes it to her and Mr Quan comes in.
It’s been around a week since Kassie joined the Quan family and Kassie sits with Krystal in Kassie’s room. They had been having some quality time. Krystal had gotten used to reading Kassie’s writing and was pleased with herself. Kassie gently pulled a page out of her notebook and spend a few moments making it into a small sweet looking swan. Krystal giggled and Kassie smiled, then placed the swan in Krystals small hands. Krystal hugs Kassie close and Kassie holds onto her. Mr Quan, or Derek, knocked and Krystal waves him in after Kassie nods a little.
“How are you feeling?” Derek asks as Kassie grabs her pen.
“I’m feeling ok, thanks!” Kassie wrote and Derek thought for a moment. “Thankfully my legs healed up so I’ll be able to walk again!” Kassie wrote and Derek smiled happily.
“Me and Shelly were talking and we decided you need to go to school. You’ll be going to the same one as Damon. He’s in year 7 and you’ll be in year 10.” He tells Kassie and Kassie nods.
Soon, Kassie wakes up to her alarm and gets up. She pulls her uniform on and silenced her alarm. She smoothes out the white shirt and black skirt before neatening the grey tie and black blazer. She also had black tights on and black slip-ons. Shelly knocks gently, then comes in as Kassie brushes her hair and looks up. Kassie smiles and stands up. Shelly leads her out to the car and Damon gets in beside her. Krystal waves from the door as Shelly gets in and starts driving. When they arrive, Damon hops out and pulls Kassie into the building, waving at Shelly. As they enter, a teacher walks over and Damon stops, freezing.
“Hello. You’re Kassie Quan, right?” The teacher asks and Kassie nods quietly. “Come.” She tells her and leads Kassie into a counsellors office and shuts the door. “Take this note.” She tells me, pushing a note into Kassie’s hand and then turned to her. “I’ll accompany you to your class.” She tells her and takes her to a long hallway.
It’s clean and Kassie can faintly hear light giggling. The counsellor opens a door and the teacher steps out. Kassie passes him the note and he nods lightly, then walks in with her at his side.
“Everyone meet Kassie, she’s new here and a mute so please don’t be offended if she doesn’t answer you.” The teacher, Mr Barns tells the class and Kassie looks down.
“Why does she look so much like Kastrelle?” A student asks and they all look to a girl at the back who's looking down.
Kastrelle has blonde hair and deep purple eyes! She’s beautiful, but there’s pure happiness in her eyes.
“Now then, Kassie, you’ll be sitting beside Kastrelle.” The teacher told her and she's confused. “Kastrelle’s also a mute and doesn’t like to listen a lot.” He told her and she walks over to Kastrelle.
Kassie sits down and feels Kastrelle’s eyes on her. Kassie pays attention and at break, Kastrelle touches her sleeve gently. She turns to her and Kastrelle slips a bit of paper into her hand and Kassie reads it. She wants to know if Kassie can actually talk. Kassie frowns and beckons her. She walks into the library, which was empty.
“I can talk but I don’t like to.” Kassie writes and Kastrelle kneels down with her and sits cross-legged.
The door opens and Kassie jumps as Damon runs in! He pulls Kassie up and hugs her. She holds him and he’s weeping.
“There’s a scary man here! He wants you!” Damon weeps and Kassie kneels to him and wipes his eyes.
Kassie gets led to the front desk and there’s a man in white there. He stands as Kassie enters and he approaches cautiously. They go to a more private room.
“Listen, Kassie. When you were 3, what happened?” He asks and she looks down. “You're parents weren’t killed in front of you were they? They were killed by you weren’t they?” He asks and Kassie let a tear drop. “Well? I can tell you weren’t sane when you were 3, Kassie. Now if anything your less sane. That’s why you don’t talk, isn’t it?” He asks and tears fall down Kassie’s face.
“I made up such good lies too.” Kassie giggled, throwing her book down. “You're right though. My parents died at my own hand. I remember the day so clearly. The blood staining the floor, every stab wound, then acting innocent. I was no fool.” She claims, smiling evilly. “Even a 3 year knows people that age are seen as innocent.” Kassie chuckled and the man quickly stepped back as the door opened.
She steps forward and her arms were quickly restrained and she was pulled out of the school with Kastrelle and Damon watching as she fought them, now trying to bite. Damon ran after her as they forced her into a straightjacket and thrusted Kassie into the van! Kassie saw Damon and he was panicked as Kassie struggles against the jacket. They slammed the doors and Kassie sat up, now glaring at the demon following her. The demon had long shiny black hair that reached its waist and black eyes. It wore a black dress that reached its knees with a white ribbon around its waist, white tights and white ribbons tying its hair up into two equal bunches. It only looked around 15, but it smirked evilly as it flexed its clawed hands and approached Kassie. Kassie had used to scream at it, yell for it to get away, but now she just watches as it knelt down to her and smirked evilly. “Oh you know why I’m ‘attached to you’, little Hikari.” It taunts as Kassie wonders why. “You killed your parents with no hesitation. Then you played the victim. I was intrigued, little Hikari.” The demon taunts her as Kassie freezes.
- Flashback/ Kassie’s POV from when she was 3-
I remember my Mummy and Daddy fighting and I didn’t like it when they fought. They blamed things on me, the ‘mistake’ or ‘worthless’ child. They either had no feelings or I was supposed to be okay with it. Tonight, there was smashing noises and I ran down the stairs. The flower vase was on the floor and Daddy was glaring at me. Mummy ran over and glared at me too. 2 years. I took the blame for broken objects, being a mistake, being a failure, stealing items I never even heard of before and even locking my parents in their rooms. This night I snapped and ran into the kitchen. Both my parents stared at me as my body twitched and they slightly backed up. My mind was leaving me. No more free will. No more choice. A flash of bright light and I opened my eyes again. My hands were smothered in blood and I held a knife in one of my hands. Then I saw…them. Mummy and Daddy lied at my feet, both ghostly pale and full of stab wounds. They both had holes in their chests as I noticed two, slightly beating hearts on the floor but then they stopped beating and I hid the knife in the loose floorboard before going to my parents.
“Mummy! Daddy! Wake up!” I screamed and neighbors soon ran in and saw me weeping over their corpses, never suspecting me to have done this.
Kassie was scared as the demon grinned and then sat beside her, resting her arm around her shoulder. Kassie doesn’t push her away. Kassie is slowly losing her mind. She keeps seeing her parents corpses flash before her eyes and their screams now returning to haunt her. Tears ran down Kassie’s face and the demon pulled her onto the demons lap and held her close, comforting her and removing the images for a bit. Soon, the van doors are opened and the guard stood there freezes. Kassie lies on the floor, her head throbbing after having fallen off the demons lap and was now rocking back and forth. The demon could do nothing now for her.
“Jeez, come here crazy kid.” The guard, Honda, told her and lifted her down, sitting her in a wheelchair and strapping her body to it. “Let’s go.” He mutters, getting in and getting to the security door, then rushing into the doctor's office down the hall and on the left, where he unstrapped Kassie and knocked, holding Kassie’s arm tightly.
“Who is it?” A light voice asks and the guard looks to Kassie. “New patient, I presume.” A young woman with sleek black hair, soft brown eyes and soft features opens the door and brings Kassie in.
She shuts the door after her and sits Kassie down, where she notices tears running down her face like a waterfall. She gently wipes Kassie’s eyes and the demon stands behind Kassie, deathly silent.
“What’s your name?” The nurse, Kella, asks and Kassie keeps weeping silently. “Kid, what’s your name?” She asks again, more kindly this time as Kassie begins to rock herself gently.
“Stop...stop...stop…Kassie is sorry...I don’t wanna see them!” Kassie weeps and Kella tries to calm Kassie but it doesn’t work.
“Is that your name? Kassie?” She asks and the demon gently tries to comfort her but it does no good now. “I’ll assume you're name is Kassie ok? I’ll take you to your new room.” Kella tells her and leads her securely to a cell.
She opens the door and the walls and ceiling were covered in white pads while the floor was a grey polished stone. There was no window. There was only a bed and a small desk at the end of the room with nothing on. Both of these were also white. Kella sits Kassie down at the side of the room and Kassie starts to rock herself, weeping. Kella leaves her there and shuts the door. The demon approaches the girl and holds her close, ridding her of the horrid images and screams. Kassie calms down a little and the demon kneels in front of her, keeping Kassie’s head on her chest.
“You’re driving yourself insane, Hikari. Breathe and try to calm down.” The demon suggests and Kassies breathes deeply, her head awkwardly on the demon's soft, cold chest. “I can’t say I expect you to stay fully sane in here but keep a tight grip on what little does remain of your sanity, little Hikari.” The demon advises and Kassie sat back, breathing deeply and trying to rid her mind of those images.
Soon, the doctor, Kella comes in and Kassie looks over, still breathing heavily to ward off her flashbacks. Kella pulls her up and leads her to the doctors office and sits her down.
“What’s your name?” Kella questions and Kassie whispers her name. “Kassie, do you remember what happened the night you saw your parents die?” Kella asks and Kassie nods. “Can you tell me?” She asks and Kassie looks dow
“My parents, ever since I was born, were fighting and blaming anything that went wrong on me. I woke up that night to a smash and went downstairs. A flower vase had smashed on the floor. My father glared at me as if I had done it and my mother did the same. All I remember is getting a knife and I was shaking, I didn’t want to kill my family…I saw a flash of white and saw I was covered in blood, my parents hearts were on the floor and they were pale with a number stab wounds I couldn’t count at the time. I hid the knife under a loose floorboards an-and I screamed my parents names to get the neighbors who took me to the orphanage.” Kassie explains quietly and Kella nods a little.
Soon, a week had passed and Kassie was back in the cell with her demon. Kassie was sitting quietly until the door opened and she looked over at Shelly! Once Kella had realised she wasn’t not dangerous Kassie didn’t have to wear the straightjacket in her cell but she still wasn’t right in the head. Shelly came in and Krystal and Damon followed! Kassie sat on the bed and stared as Krystal came over and gently placed her notebook on the bed. Kassie smiled and she climbed up.
“Want another swan?” Kassie asked and it shocked everyone because Kassie had spoken, but Krystal nodded.
Kassie made a paper swan and Krystal gazed at it happily. Slowly, Kassie can hear her parents screams and starts breathing heavily as the demon in the room notices and freezes. This time it doesn’t help as Krystal stares as she blocks her ears and starts rocking and Shelly calls for the doctor! Kella sprints in and rushes over. She holds a blue syringe as the demon can’t do anything, but quickly rushes over as Kassie is injected and falls unconscious and the demon removes the blue liquid from her Hikari. Ansu then throws forces Kella backwards when Kassie grips her arm, but nobody else sees and the demon drops her with no harm done.
“What the hell was that?” Kella freaks, rubbing her side and Kassie struggles to sit up.
“That’s my demon. I’m already in a mental hospital so why try hide it?” Kassie tells her with a smile and Kella comes over. “”You spooked her, so she freaked.” Kassie added and Kella sighs.
“What is it you see when you have these meltdowns?” Kella changes the subject and Kassie looks down. “I’ll ask later if you don’t answer.” She mutters quietly and Kassie sighs.
“My parents. Their screams. A laugh that sounds just like mine but I don’t remember laughing…” Kassie tells her quietly and the demon glares at Kella.
“I’ll fetch you're meds, just keep that ‘demon’ away from me!” She panics and leaves quickly as Kassie sits up and Krystal’s shocked.
‘Only touch that nurse if she’s going to hurt me’ Kassie thought, knowing the demon would pick up on it.
Kella returns and pushes two plastic cups into her hands. One has pills, the other has water. Both are half full. Kassie gulped and Krystal gazes at the pills. Kassie quickly tipped all of the pills into her mouth, followed by a gulp of water and a small cough. Damon approaches and he’s upset. Kassie looks over and he holds tears.
“Is it true?” He asks and Kassie’s confused. “What they say at school? That you…killed your parents?” He weeps and Kassie sighed.
“Damon, I’m doing what I’m meant to. Being in here. Be lucky you got to see me, Damon.” Kassie reassures him and Damon wipes his eyes. “But to answer the question - yes it’s true. But it still haunts me to this day and I’m starting to lose my mind, Damon.” Kassie tells him and Shelly comes over and Kassie feels terrible. “Shelly…” Kassie whispered and she’s close to tears. “I owe you answers, but not around the children. Come when they are at home and I’ll answer anything I can.” Kassie promises and Shelly leaves momentarily and Krystal is worried as Kassie shudders and sees another spirit glare at hers.
“Back off my Hikari!” My demon snaps and the other two hear it faintly and look up.
“Ah, Ansu! Haven’t seen you for a bit, you went to a kid?” The second spirit barked and they all can hear it.
The second spirit has golden tan, harsh dark blue eyes, sandy coloured hair and sharp features. It hisses at Kassie’s, who it called Ansu.
“Ansu? Is that your name?” Kassie whispers to the demon beside her before calming Krystal. “Krystal, it was probably another patient.” Kassie told her quietly and Krystal hugs her.
“Yes, Hikari. And this spirit is…an old friend of mine.” The demon told her and Kassie plays with Krystal.
Shelly returns and Derek’s behind her! The younger two go to him and he quickly gives Kassie a hug before leaving with the younger two. Ansu and the spirit are fighting and Kassie turns to them. Shelly sits down and Kassie faces her.
“Why did you kill your parents?” Shelly asks and Kassie look down.
Even the spirits stop fighting to look and the one with the tan chuckles loudly, scaring Shelly, who appears to have heard it.
“Are all demons territorial, Ansu?” Kassie asks Ansu, who looks over and nods. “It’s just Ansu, Shelly. I killed my parents…because they hated me so I snapped one night, saw a white light, woke up and they were dead.” Kassie murmurs and Shelly lifts her head and hugs her close. “I’m in here for good reason, I think. Sure I’m on way too much medication, but I’m here. I have Ansu at least.” I tell her as Ansu pounces the other spirit and the door bangs!
“Stay down, bastard!” Ansu hisses and Kassie goes to the door.
Kassie slowly opens it a crack and a young boy stands there. He’s got a light tan, light blue eyes and soft features. He seems out of breath. Kassie knows this boy, his name is Merlin and he has a demon too.
“Is Merlie here?” He asks and Kassie nods slowly. “Merlie!” Merlin screeches and a guard comes down as he begins to shake and she pulls him in, getting a dirty look from the guard. “Go suck a cock!” Merlin calls and Kassie quickly shut the door. “He’s a prick. All the guards are!” Merlin moans and goes to Merlie.
“They’re gonna storm in pretty soon so if I were you, Merlin and Merlie, I’d scram.” Kassie advises as Ansu grins and Kassie pushes the other two out as guards come down and Merlin pleads with me.
“Guard! I think I saw a lockpick in the bathrooms!” Kassie distracts the guard as the other boy flees. “A young girl had a lockpick, I saw her!” Kassie speaks loudly and in a high tone to annoy him and he grunts, going off to the bathrooms, letting Kassie shut the door and return to Shelly.
“Did you just lie to that guard?” Shelly asks and Kassie looks up with a guilty look. “That’s wrong to do.” Shelly scolds and Kassie smiles.
“In here, morals go out the window.” Kassie tells her and Ansu stares. “Same as acting sane. After a while you give up.” Kassie admits as the door bangs and she jumps up! “Who is it!” She calls and hears a deep chuckle.
“Oh, it’s only RIKU!” A deep voice calls and Ansu snarls like a vicious dog and glares at the door. “Ansu, it’s time to play!” He calls and Ansu watches the door.
“I have my family over so piss off!” Kassie calls out and he bangs again. “I just said go away!!” Kassie calls out, louder this time.
“Ansu LET ME IN NOW!!” Riku cries and Ansu flinches.
“Forgive me, Hikari but this is urgent!” Ansu apologises as Kassie starts to hear her parents screams and see their bodies, their hearts, their pale skin and starts rocking herself and blocking her ears.
“I...I...I...I…” Kassie stammered and Shelly was shocked and called for the doctor, who ran in, moving Riku away.
“I’m just sedating her.” Kella, having learnt from last time, explained to the air beside Ansu and injected Kassie.
Kassie began to feel groggy and tired and fell into a deep sleep. Shelly stared at her as Ansu kept her word to Kassie. Kella stood up and laid Kassie down, then turnt to Shelly.
“I think it’d be best if she had some rest for now. Perhaps you can come back tomorrow?” Kella suggests and Shelly nods, then leaves.
Before the door shuts though, Kassie wakes and is kicking and screaming, almost hitting Kella, forcing guards in and to force her straightjacket on as she struggles and fights it.
The straightjacket now also has leg restraints on it so Kassie can’t kick out and hurt anyone. Shelly watches as slowly, words tumble from her mouth in a scream.
“STOP!! STOP!! PLEASE I NEVER WANTED TO HURT YOU!” Kassie screams and the demon goes over and tries to calm her. “Please...Mummy…
Daddy...Stop it...it’s not my fault…” Kassie weeps before going limp.
Kella feels her neck, then lies her down. Kella pulls the sheets up as Shelly watched with a pale face. Kassie stirs and Kella feels her forehead before leaving.
“Shelly Quan, please do not worry. She has those at least once a day and rarely twice but she’ll be ok. She normally cries out like that but there is nothing I can do for her except try to help her relax. Having you here today...I think that helped. Often, she’ll sit around talking to herself and even exercising.” Kella explains and Shelly feels terrible.
Chapter 1
Soon, Kassie’s eyelids fluttered and slowly opened. Ansu is by her side and Kassie sits up a little. Ansu feels really bad for doing that to her little Hikari. The door slides open and Kella steps in with Shelly and Derek. Kella passes Kassie two cups and she looks at them. Derek sits beside her and Kella slips two more in and Ansu growls.
“It’s for your headache, I’m sure you have one.” Kella admits and Ansu relaxes a little. “That demon of yours really freaks me out…” Kella murmurs and Kassie looks up, then looks to Ansu briefly.
“She did attack you so it’s reasonable you fear her.” Kassie tells her and takes the pills with some water. “Anyway, why do you bring up my demon?” Kassie asks Kella who starts shaking as Ansu growls deeply. “Oh…” Kassie murmurs and Ansu shuts up.
“Well, I’ll leave you guys alone.” Kella tells them and Kassie sighs.
“I was wondering, Hikari, is anyone else allowed to see me?” Ansu asks Kassie loudly so her parents hear too.
“You could show yourself…” Kassie whispers and Ansu smiles. “Just don’t go picking fights with Riku or Merlie…” Kassie warns and she nods as she gets her own body and waves at Shelly and Derek then leaves.
“So, what happened? How did you end up in here?” Derek asks and Kassie looks down.
“I-I-I killed my parents…” Kassie whispers and Derek turns to the banging on the door!
“Kassie!!” It’s Merlin! “Please! Ansu, she’s got into it with Merlie!” Merlin whimpered and Kassie gets up and opens the door.
“Can you fetch Rika? He’s the only other Hikari in the hospital. The Yami’s can fight all they want. It’s a game for them...uh oh…” Kassie murmured as a white fog travelled down the halls and as it reached Kassie’s feet, she jumped back, pulling Merlin forward. “I’ll get Rika, you stay here.” Kassie tells him and he stays there as Kassie’s parents stare at the light fog that moves around on its own.
Kassie ran down to Rika and Rikus room and banged on the door. Riku answered and Rika followed.
“Can you stop the other demons?” Kassie asks, pointing at the fog and Riku ran, following it as Kassie pulled Rika back to her room, avoiding the fog.
Kassie struggles, but managed to shut the door and all three sat on Kassie’s bed, slightly shaking.
“Kassie, we’re going to go home.” Derek tells them and Kassie freezes.
“Is the fog gone?” Merlin spits out quickly and Derek opens the door, then shook his head. “Then you can’t go.” Merlin warns and Kassie nods.
“I’ll try to contact Ansu.” I tell them and closed my eyes.
‘Ansu!’ Kassie called out and in another room, Ansu slipped out. ‘Stop using the powers of Overhead! It...It’s making all three of us Hikari’s weak!’ Kassie cried out and fell back as Merlin felt drained and so did Rika.
Soon, the shadows disappear and Ansu returned the Hikari’s then cradled her own until she woke up and froze. Ansu put Kassie down and went invisible again and Kassie checked the door. Derek and Shelly stared at the clear hallway, then left hastily. Ansu smiles and Kassie sits back, waiting for Merlin to come in with Merlie. Soon enough, Merlin stepped in with Merlie following. Merlie goes to Ansu and pulls her into an odd hug as Merlin smiled.
“I am so sorry for entering your territory and fighting with you.” Merlie mumbles in her ear resentfully. “I hope we can still be friends, Ansu.” He mutters darkly and gets up, then turns to Merlin. “All happy happy friends, happy now, Merlin?” Merlie growls and Ansu smiles.
“I hope you mean it or you won’t have any time out of your little rubix cube for a week!” Merlin threatens and Ansu shivers.
All of their demons were trapped within objects before they came out. However, those objects need to be complete for them to come out. Ansu was in a small teddy Kassie still has and Merlie was in a rubix cube while Riku was trapped oddly within a wooden spoon. Kassie, Merlin and Rika were often called Hikaris by their demons so they called them Yami’s. It fits nicely. Light (Hikari) and darkness (Yami). Ansu snaps Kassie out of her thoughts by sitting beside her and smiling.
“Do you know that people watch your every move?” Ansu whispers in Kassie’s ear and Kassie nods discreetly.
“Be lucky we aren’t in…The Dragon Wing.” Merlin mutters and Kassie freezes. “I hear they torture patients there…” Merlin whimpers and Ansu smiled.
“Quit smiling, Ansu.” Kassie warms and then sighs. “Merlin, only critical patients go in there.” Kassie reminds and Merlin nods.
“But maybe we could be deemed critical patients soon!” He panics and Kassie rubs his arm gently. “I don’t wanna go there!” He freaks out and Kassie smiles.
“None of us do, Merlin.” Kassie reminds him and he sighs. “But if those guards tell me Ansu isn’t real again I’m going to snap!” Kassie adds.
Soon, Kassie’s in another group session and Ansu stands by her, her hand on Kassie’s shoulder to ward off the images and dying screams of her parents. Merlin sits across from Kassie as Merlie rests his hand upon Merlins head, making him feel safer. Then Rika sits beside Kassie and Riku stalks the edge of the room, petrifying Rika, who is comforted by Kassie. A young woman with light brown hair comes in and comes over to them.
“Hello Rika, Merlin and Kassie.” The woman greets them and Kassie looks up as Ansu snarls and Riku and Merlie stand by each other, behind Ansu.
They all know Ansu is the strongest and most protective of her Hikari. Kassie looks to Rika and gently holds him close to her side, soothing his violent shaking to mere trembles.
“You don’t need to fear me, Kassie, Rika and Merlin. Nor do your friends.” She advises and Ansu only grew more protective. “I’m aware you three believe you have ghosts?” She asks and Kassie looks down sadly.
“They aren’t ghosts. They’re DEMONS!” Rika cries and Kassie hits him round the head and Riku frowns. “Y-Y-Yamis…” Rika corrects himself and Kassie tries to help him. comes in and Kassie looks over, watching from behind Ansu. Ansu watches the woman and snarls lightly. Riku and Merlie shudder and they hide behind Ansu, beside their Hikaris. Riku holds Rika’s small hand and he relaxes a little as does Merlin when Merlie touches his soft hand. Kassie lets go of Merlin and Ansu steps in front of Kassie to protect her. All the Yami’s know that Ansu is the strongest and, while they fight and act friendly, they all fear getting on her bad side. The woman smiles and sits down across from them and quietly observes the demon protecting all the three of them and the two other Yamis calming their look-alikes.
“Hello, you three.” She greets and Ansu snarls at her. “My name’s Isis.” She tells them and Ansu stops and looks at Kassie.
“She’s a demon-lover. And well-known for having an ability to see us, Kassie.” Ansu explains and then sighs. “That’s just a front. She’s the daughter of a demon and a human. A half-breed. She sees us because she’s half us. But she’s trapped in a human body.” Ansu explains and kneels before her.
“You can’t mean she’s…” Merlie started and Isis smiled.
“Yes. King Kalim’s daughter has arrived before us. Princess Isis.” Ansu tells him and the other two bow quickly.
The Hikaris back away and Isis smiles at them. Then the Yamis go to their Hikaris and stand by them.
“Names?” She asks and Ansu nods quickly.
“My name is Ansu and this is my Hikari Kassie.” Ansu introduces them and then bows respectfully.
“M-My name is Merlie and this my Hikari Merlin.” Merlie introduces and bows as well to her.
“M-M-M-My name’s R-R-Riku and t-this is Rika my H-Hikari.” Riku stutters and Rika’s scared.
“Well, Ansu. I see you must be the most powerful.” Isis claims and Ansu nods silently. “I guess they don’t actually know our relation.” She adds and Ansu looks away.
“Come, why not say it?” She asks and Ansu growls a little. “Tell them, or I will!” She suddenly snaps and Ansu nods.
“Isis is…my sister. She was lucky to be half demon and I was forced to an early retirement by her bloody hands!” Ansu snaps and scowls at her sister. “She killed me. She wanted to see if I was a true demon or not so she murdered me. I escaped but was forever bound to the teddy so I sent it to an innocent teenager. Things got out out of hand and I was forced to stay by Kassie till she dies.” Ansu explains and Isis nods, smirking. “Still, we both murdered so we got even. She killed our parents and I killed Kassie’s parents so we are even.” Ansu admits.
“Very well said. I must say though that Kassie’s parents hardly deserved to die.” Isis told her and Kassie stood up. “Anyway, Kassie is now in here for life.” Isis adds and Kassie frowns.
“You’re wrong, Isis.” Kassie speaks up and glares at her. “My parents did deserve to die for what they did. And I’ll get out of here. I’ll just act sane and get Ansu to calm down with Kella.” Kassie tells her and Ansu nods.
“And the guards will get the best of you, Kassie.” Isis tells her and Ansu step in front of Kassie.
“You will not lay a finger on my Hikari.” Ansu defends and Kassie steps to Ansu and Ansu looks back for a moment as Kassie hugs her from behind. “We defend each other. Kassie fights that I am real and I fight that Kassie stays sane!” Ansu scolds him and Isis is shocked. “Yami’s normally terrorise Hikari’s, but we’re different. We care for our Hikari’s like real friends.” Ansu tells her and Kassie holds onto her.
Soon, Kassie is back in her cell with Ansu and her arms are, once again, restrained in an itchy straightjacket. Ansu sits with her and Kassie looks down as her parents flash to her mind once again and she just endures it. However, a tear runs down Kassie’s face and Ansu is surprised.
“Hikari, what’s wrong?” Ansu asks and Kassie shakes her head as her parents gently fade away and Ansu wipes Kassie’s eyes.
“It’s getting more bearable, Ansu.” Kassie whispers and Ansu lifts her head. “I don’t even react to it now, Ansu.” She says with a smile and Ansu pulls her close and Kassie tries not to cry.
“Hikari…how have you been able to cope with it?” Ansu asks quietly and Kassie looks up at her. “Hikari? Are you still sane?” She asks cautiously and Kassie smiles.
“Of course I’m sane. I just…knew I had support for when it gets too tough, Ansu.” Kassie whispers and leans into her as Ansu watches her in silence. “Please…don’t leave me…” Kassie whimpers silently and Ansu gently lifts her onto her lap and holds her close so she can sleep peacefully.
Kassie slowly opens her eyes to find herself lying on her bed with Ansu sitting beside her, thinking in silence, her mind link blocked off from Kassie. Kassie stirred and looked up slowly, catching Ansu’s attention and Ansu looks over, then smiles a little. Kassie yawns, then stretches her back. Ansu stands up and Kassie feels odd, still in her straight jacket and unable to move at all. Kella steps in and comes over to Kassie, who tries to look over at Ansu, but she’s disappeared out of the door. Kella helps Kassie up and sits her on the bed and grabs her pills and water from the tray she’s wheeling. Kassie tries to turn away, but Kella makes Kassie look at her. Kassie pulls away and looks down.
“Take your pills, Kassie.” Kella tells her and she doesn’t move. “I’ll have to give them to you today because of your straightjacket.” She tells her and Kassie looks at the door as Ansu comes back in.
Kella forces Kassie to look at her again and Kassie tries to pull away, but Kella’s strong. Kella tips the cup of pills into Kassie’s mouth and washes them down with water. All the while, Kassie squirms and tries to get free of Kella, but can’t. Ansu comes over, then looks behind her to see Riku and Rika, now side-by-side.
“Kassie’s hurt, Ansu.” Riku tells Ansu, who sighs. “Why did you leave her?!” Riku suddenly snaps, shocking Ansu, who spins round.
“I-I found someone. That’s all.” Ansu whispers and Rika runs to Kassie and pulls Kella off of her as Kassie starts to choke.
Ansu rushes to Kassie and rubs her back gently. Kassie coughs up a few pills and Rika quickly hugs her. Ansu uses her magic to remove the pills effect from her body and Kassie relaxes a little. Riku comes over and turns to Ansu, who looks a little weaker than normal.
“Ansu. What happened?” Riku demands and Ansu froze. “Who did you find? Why are you pained?” He interrogates and Ansu looks away.
“Forget it. It’s nothing to do with you.” Ansu hisses and Kassie looks up at her. “I-I-I just…” She starts, but stops as Kassie manages to stand and Rika quickly helps her stay standing. “Why not tell us? You left me with Kella, knowing recently she’s been trying to kill me, and your mind link was blocked.” Kassie whispers and Rika pulls her to his side.
“I-I found my baby sister, ok? Now…she might be dying. She’s my only family left. She’s 2 and is currently still being admitted. She saw me.” Ansu tells them sadly and Kassie turns to Kella.
Kassie slowly starts to grow dizzy and Kella stands from the floor where Rika had shoved her. Ansu looks at Kassie as she holds her head and Kella smiles.
“Well done, Ansu, was it? The demon. Isis told me all about you.” Kella teases as Kassie falls to her knees and Rika’s confused. “The one thing even demons can’t change.” She taunts and Ansu freezes, then forces Kella to choke on nothing.
A guard rushes in as Kella falls limp on the floor and all 3 Yami’s (Riku, Merlie and Ansu) surround Kassie and put their hands on her head and work hard magically. Kassie faints after a moment, but Rika holds her up. Soon, Riku starts to sway and Merlie supports him as Merlin supports Merlie and Ansu.
“Fetch a stretcher!” The guard calls and the Yami’s move their hands and Ansu remains standing as the other two are supported by their Hikaris. “Now! This girl is ill!” The guard calls again and Kassie hits the floor.
“She’ll live.” Ansu murmurs, then watches as the guards lift her onto a stretcher and carry her away.
Kassie follows and sits with her for around 7 hours. It was probably around midnight the guards took Kassie to the medical ward. Kassie stirs and Ansu looks to her, gently squeezing her hand. Kassie’s hair is now limp, her face pale and her body incredibly thin. Kassie also now wears a thin dress that’s pale lilac in colour, an oxygen mask on her face and her feet lie limp. Her straight jacket had been removed, but it was nearby, as well as a shot of sedative in case she got out of control.
Kassie’s amethyst eyes flicker open and she looks at Ansu, then looks around. The dark room was empty except a hospital-like heart monitor and some medications coming into her arm through a needle.
“Ansu…” Kassie whispers, but Ansu gently presses a soft, warm finger to her delicate lips and smiles.
“Shhh. Do not talk, Hikari. You were hurt badly so try to rest.” Ansu tells her and a young girl totters in.
She’s a demon like Ansu. She has black hair that is a little below her shoulders and black eyes that are filled with tears. She sees Ansu and speeds up, walking to her. Kassie is sat up on the bed and notices her hands and feet are bound to the bed. The young girl raises her arms to Ansu, who lifts her and holds her to her side.
“Kassie, this is Anzu, my sister.” Ansu tells Kassie as Kassie leans back. “Technically, she’s dead, but like me she died young. She possesses a child that seems to be afraid of her.” Ansu explains and Kassie nods. “Do you want me to fetch Rika?” She asks and Kassie shakes her head a little.
“I...need to talk to you…” Kassie murmurs and Ansu nods, then takes Anzu out.
“Go back to the girl you possess.” Ansu tells her and Anzu smiles and hugs her.
“Her name’s Suzaki and she’s 6. Sister, do you possess Kassie?” The girl asked in fluent Japanese and Ansu nods, then kneels down to her height.
“Yes. Now go, I have important issues with my Hikari.” Ansu reminds and Ansu runs off.
Ansu returns and Kassie looks over sadly. Ansu looks around before freeing her hands and feet from the bed.
“Ansu…” Kassie murmurs and Ansu comes to her. “Why did you leave me with her?” Kassie asked dangerously and Ansu sits with her.
“I’m sorry, Kassie. I did not think she’d try to overdose you.” Ansu tells her and Kassie sits up now she’s able to and glares at Ansu.
“I actually thought you could keep me safe from her! How naive of me.” Kassies words hurt Ansu and she uses her demon magic to pin Kassie to the bed. “I don’t want you to touch me!” She screams and Ansu goes over.
“I had to find my sister. I came straight back after.” Ansu defends and gags her so no doctors run in after hearing her screams. “Now stop screaming. They think you’re insane and you want to get out don’t you?” She questions and Kassie starts to cry. “Rika and Merlie need me. I’m the strongest so I have to help them out. You’re safe in here.” Ansu tells her, then releases Kassie and quickly darts off.
Soon, doctors come in and check Kassie. They slip her into a straight jacket and lead her back to her cell. Rika and Merlin pass by an hour later to see Kassie sitting on her hard bed, staring at the wall, caught in her thoughts. They enter the open door and Riku and Merlie stop them as Ansu follows and stares.
‘What happened?’ Ansu thought as Kassie lets a single tear run down her pale face.
Rika and Merlie look to Ansu and Ansu feels guilty. Silently, Ansu steps forward and Anzu stops her by clinging to her legs.
“Sister. She needs to deal with this alone. So let her be. Suzaki was like this for a bit but they deal with it alone, big sister.” Anzu warns her and Ansu looks at Kassie.
“Little sister, Kassie is older now. She needs my help and if she refuses it I will leave her be. It’s going to be fine.” Ansu reassures her and Anzu sighs, then goes to the others.
“The kid’s not right, Ansu. Kassie needs you. If she says she doesn’t need help, try to help her.” Riku tells her and holds Rika back. “Other Hikaris can’t help. No matter the relation.” Riku adds and pulls Rika out and into their room.
Merlie does the same with Merlin. Ansu approaches Kassie and sits with her. Anzu stares for a bit and then sits down.
“Kassie?” Ansu asks quietly and Kassie looks down a little, tears falling down her face. “What happened?” Ansu asks and Kassie wipes her eyes.
“I…my little sister’s alive. She’s being brought here for me to see.” Kassie whispers and Ansu’s confused. “It means my parents are alive. Or one of them is.” Kassie spits and Ansu’s shocked.
“Kassie. I can’t be blamed. I didn’t kill them. I just played with your head. They abandoned you when you were a baby so I took you to a little cabin and meddled with your memories so it seemed you knew your parents. Two years later, they had another child. I wasn’t responsible when your parents died for real. It was around 5 days ago, Kassie. Mother died in a car accident and the father is in prison. Kassie, you're the only person you're sister can go to. You’ve been deemed relatively sane and with some medications you can get out.” Ansu tells her and Kassie nods quietly.
Kassie wraps her arms around Ansu and Ansu pulls her close even though she’s confused. Kassie clings to Ansu and Ansu smiles a little. Kassie sits up and Anzu totters over and sighs.
“I hate walking like that. Ansu, can’t you fly still?” Anzu asks and Ansu nods slowly, then puts her arm around Kassie.
Eventually, Kassie was released and had her little sister, Kaylie. Kaylie had blonde hair and amethyst eyes like Kassie. Kaylie was 23 years old now and had been with Kassie for 10 years. They could easily pass as twins except that Kaylie had a kinder personality and Kassie had grown hard and cold. Ansu watched over Kassie and Kaylie had no idea. Kassie talks to Ansu when she’s alone and has forgiven her. Kassie sometimes lets Ansu have her own body and plans to introduce her as one of Kassie’s friends to Kaylie. Ansu and Kassie have been chatting for half an hour with Ansu having her own body. Rika and Merlin were there too. Riku and Merlie had their own bodies too.
Anzu had also gotten her own body, sticking close to Ansu. Kassie was different today. It was her 25th birthday and she was due to be getting married soon. Her fiance was a young businessman who adored and admired Kassie for her body. However, she feared he only wanted her body. She had to get Ansu alone to tell her. She knew she could go to Ansu and didn't want to worry her friends. Kassie also wasn’t feeling very well and was throwing up a little. Her fiance, Jon, was being very active in the bedroom and rarely wore any protection. She was slightly fearful of him, but was forced into the marriage. Ansu had noticed the distant look in her Hikari’s eyes and lifted her head, snapping her out of her thoughts.
“You ok?” Ansu asks calmly, sitting down again and Kassie nods in silence. “Ok…you just seem distant.” Ansu admits as Anzu sits beside her sister and Kassie shrugs. “Well, I am getting married soon, so I can be distant if I need to be.” Kassie replies quietly and Anzu hugs her sister. “I have to go, Kaylie might worry if she’s alone too long.” Kassie admits and stands up. “I’ll introduce Ansu tomorrow.” Kassie adds and Ansu nods, then turns transparent. “I’ll see you later.” Kassie bids them farewell, then gets into her red car and starts it.
“Talk to me, Kassie.” Ansu tells her quietly and Kassie shakes her head as the car starts and she ties her hair up. “Why not?” She asks and Kassie sighs a little.
“Just forget it, Ansu. I’m fine. I won’t say anything.” Kassie mutters and then leans forward. “I want to tell you, I really do. But I don’t know how to say it.” Kassie tells her and then starts driving.
“Want me to look into your mind?” Ansu suggests as Kassie pulls up outside and shakes her head.
“I’ll deal with this, Ansu.” Kassie tells her, getting out and going inside to find Kaylie backing away from Jon! “Kaylie! I’m home!” Kassie calls, not having seen her, and puts her bag on the table. “Kaylie?” Kassie calls and enters the front room as Jon pulls a knife!
Kassie runs over and pins him down, then Ansu holds him down as Kassie runs to Kaylie. Kaylie clings to Kassie and weeps. Kaylie’s shaking and scared. She weeps endlessly and Ansu glares at the man she knows can’t see her. He struggles, but to no avail. Ansu holds him tighter and he starts to choke.
‘Try not to kill him. Kaylie’s here.’ Kassie thinks as she comforts her sister.
‘Take her out then. I want to kill him.’ Ansu growls in her mind and Kassie helps Kaylie to stand.
‘Fine. Kill him. I’ll explain later why what you did is wrong.’ Kassie retorts, leading Kaylie to the kitchen and getting her a drink.
Ansu growls and chokes Jon so badly he cries out and Kaylie freezes as Kassie stops her running in, a glum look on her eyes.
Kaylie’s shocked as Ansu approaches Kassie, looking happier. Ansu can’t be seen by her but Kassie can’t ignore her.
“Kassie!” Rika calls from outside and Kassie quickly sits Kaylie down and rushes to get the door. Rika’s shocked and Ansu looks at him.
“Hey, you forgot your jacket” He greets so Kaylie hears, then lowers his voice. “What’s wrong with Ansu and you?” He asks quietly and Kassie looks away.
“She won’t tell me.” Ansu tells him quietly and Kassie frowns. “She’s been like this since we left.” Ansu admits and Kassie sighs.
“Not here. I’ll tell you on Wednesday. Come here and we can talk privately.” Kassie suggests and Rika nods. “Let Riku, Merlin and Merlie know if you like.” Kassie tells him and Rika nods. “I have to get to Kaylie, so thanks.” Kassie thanks loudly, then shuts the door.
Kassie returns to Kaylie, now holding her pink jacket. Kaylie’s still shaken up but calmer now. Ansu looks to Kassie, then sighs. Kassie holds her younger sister close as Ansu gets rid of Jon’s body. Kaylie looks up at Kassie, who isn’t even fazed by the attack on her little sister.
“Try to get some sleep, Kaylie. It’ll be the best for you.” Kassie tells her, sympathy showing on her face and in her eyes.
Kaylie clings to Kassie and she looks to her.
“I don’t want to be alone tonight, Kassie…” Kaylie whispers and Kassie takes her into her room and lays her down.
“Ok you can sleep in here tonight then.” Kassie tells her quietly and lies down beside her, her warm arms wrapped around Kaylie protectively.
At midnight, Kaylie’s asleep and Kassie’s gotten out of the bed and is sitting on the windowsill. Ansu is sat beside her, trying to read her mind, but a part of it is blocked off from her.
“Why won’t you tell me what’s wrong?” Ansu asks and Kassie looks over quietly.
“I suppose I’d better tell you why killing Jon was wrong.” Kassie murmurs and Ansu looks over.
Ansu was in her own body and looks a little paler than normal. It made Kassie a little worried but she knew Ansu deserved answers and she would be able to handle it.
“I-I did a test a few days ago, Ansu…” Kassie holds sobs back and Ansu’s confused. “I’m pregnant, Ansu, with Jon’s baby!” Kassie weeps and Ansu freezes.
“I-I killed the babies father and dumped his body outside the police station…” Ansu confesses and Kaylie stirs. “I’m sorry…” Ansu whispers and Kassie shakes her head silently silently.
“It’s fine. You did what you had to, Ansu.” Kassie murmurs and stands up, then hugs Ansu as she returns to spirit form and rests in her teddy.
Kassie climbs back into bed and holds Kaylie close and silently falls asleep.
In the morning, Kaylie wakes up first and feels arms around her. Kaylie starts to move, remembering Jon holding the knife to her! She looks up and sees her sisters angelic sleeping face and hugs her. Kassie stirs as Kaylie remembers last night.
“I’m pregnant, Ansu, with Jon’s baby!” Kassie weeps-
She wondered who ‘Ansu’ was but didn’t ask just yet. Kassie sits up and looks at her sister, who had buried her face in Kassie’s neck. Kaylie looks up and Kassie puts her arm around her silently and smiles. Kaylie gets up and gets into one of Kassie’s dresses. It was purple and made of silk. It was a gift from Jon. Kassie smiles forcefully and Ansu stands in spirit form beside Kassie and Kassie stands up and Kaylie walks over.
“I might just steal this.” Kaylie teases and Kassie smiles, smoothing it out on Kaylie. “It feels so nice and comfy!” She exclaims and Kassie nods.
“You can have it, Kaylie. I have a spare.” Kassie admits and Kaylie grins. “I was planning on giving it to your birthday.” Kassie admits and Kaylie’s happy.
“Kassie…” Kaylie starts and Kassie looks over as she rummages her closet and finally finds what she’s after. “Are you…pregnant?” Kaylie asks and Kassie freezes and quickly stops Ansu attacking with an internal warning.
“Yeah, Kaylie. My friends are coming over soon so I’m going to tell them. I’ll introduce you to them.” Kassie tells her and walks over. “But, I don’t know how to tell Jon…it’s his so…” Kassie stops and Kaylie hugs her.
“It’ll be ok!” Kaylie tells her and Kassie nods a little. “Yesterday…J-Jon…” She starts, clinging to Kassie, then breathes deeply. “He was trying to kill me, saying I wasn’t pure, Kassie…” Kaylie whispers and Kassie holds her close.
- Flashback, Kaylie’s POV -
I was pinned to a bed. I was scared. I was gagged and staring into the face of a dirty old man who was kneeling on top of me. It was Jolan! He was always my friend at the choir at church...always! He had beaten me badly and I feared I had a cracked rib or two. He suddenly got a metal brand that had been heated and rammed it into my side, causing me to scream loudly and he smiles.
“You are not pure, you are dirty, you are bad, you have sinned and the Lord will not forgive you.” He sneered and I was weeping.
A brand of the devil sat on my side and marked me as his. Suddenly, Jolan fell down and I was freed. A boy stood before me. Jon. He helped me up and wrapped a blanket around my small body and held me close to him.
Kassie gently hushes her and Ansu stares. Ansu drops out of the window and joins Rika, Riku, Merlin and Merlie. Ansu, Riku and Merlie quickly get their own bodies and pause to discuss what they’re going to say. Meanwhile, with Kassie, Kaylie’s still weeping. Kassie strokes her soft hair and wipes her eyes, seeing her upset broke her heart. Kassie gently pulls Kaylie into the bathroom and brushes her hair gently. It usually calms her down. Her tears stop falling and Kassie ties her hair back with a silk purple ribbon and then Kaylie’s astounded! Kaylie gets up as Kassie changes into a pink silk dress and brushes her own hair. Kassie quietly places the brush down and the doorbell rings and she smiles.
“That must be my friends. We only have until 5, remember?” Kassie asks and Kaylie nods.
She pulls Kaylie downstairs and opens the door. Rika and Riku smile at them as Merlin and Merlie stand nearby and Ansu and Anzu stand behind them. Kassie lets them in and Kaylie’s polite, leading them into the front room of the mansion. After their parents had died, they inherited their titles and their home and money. Rika and Riku sat together and Ansu leads the 12-year-old Anzu to the armchair and they sit there together. Merlin and Merlie sit on the other leather chair and Kassie and Kaylie stand by the door.
“Thanks for coming.” Kassie thanks as Merlie and Merlin look around in awe and Kaylie smiles a little. “I’ve not been very truthful lately…” Kassie tells them and they look at her. “I didn’t know how to tell you about what Jon was doing and how it affected me. Not even Ansu knew and she’s my closest friend.” Kassie tells them and Rika comes over and puts a hand on her shoulder.
"You can tell us, Kassie.” Rika reassures her and she nods a little then looks down.
“Jon was only marrying me for status. And my body. I didn’t get the chance to tell him last night that…I’m pregnant. With his child.” Kassie tells them quietly and they all hug her lightly.
“Wow! That’s amazing, Kassie!” Rika tells her and they smile.
“Oh, I should probably introduce you to my sister, Kaylie.” Kassie remembers and they look at her. “Kaylie, this is Rika, Riku, Merlin, Merlie, Ansu and Anzu.” Kassie tells her, pointing at each when she says their names. “Rika and Riku are twins as are Merlin and Merlie. Anzu and Ansu are coincidental.” Kassie explains and they nod a little.
“Are you two twins?” Rika asks and Kassie shakes her head quickly.
Kassie checks the time and looks at Kaylie, who freezes. Kaylie runs out as Kassie quickly uses her watch to power the house down and Kaylie runs back in with torches. They sit together in the middle as Kassie holds her sister close and the others copy, but are confused.
Kaylie...close the curtains.” Kassie hisses in her ear and Kaylie stiffens up. “I’ll do it.” She mutters and quickly shuts the curtains and a car drives past, making her freeze as she hides from view.
Kaylie’s shaking as Ansu comforts her as Anzu hides behind her sister. The door bangs and Kaylie holds sobs as Kassie races to her and Ansu’s confused as Kassie pulls her to the sofa and calms her down.
“He won’t break the door, will he?” Kaylie weeps and Kassie shakes her head and holds Kaylie close. “He c-ca-can’t get me!” She cries and Kassie shakes her head.
“He won’t do anything.” Kassie reassures her and the door bangs again, making Kaylie flinch as Kassie motions the others to stay quiet.
“Cowards!” A man from outside calls and bangs the door again. “Open this door, you impure girls!” He demands and Kassie peeks out so he can’t see.
The man is clean-shaved and has neat black hair and glasses. He knows what happened to both of the girls and wants to cleanse them. Ansu never sees this. She sleeps most of the time or Kassie forces her into her teddy and locks it in a suitcase so she can’t see. Ansu never asked Kassie anything. Kaylie was holding sobs as Kassie was shaking.
“OPEN IT OR I’LL BREAK IT DOWN!” Kassie visibly flinched and Kaylie gasps. “You have 5 minutes to open the door.” He warns loudly and Kassie makes Kaylie sit up.
“Listen to me, Kaylie. Fetch the gun and make sure he does not see or hear you.” Kassie tells her firmly and Kaylie slips out silently as Kassie starts to freak out and clenches her fist.
Kaylie returns and presses the gun into Kassie’s hands and Kassie loads it quickly. Kaylie’s shocked and tries to stop Kassie leaving, but Kassie pushes her off. Kaylie’s shocked, but Kassie leaves and Riku growls and Kaylie looks over as Rika calms him and Merlie has to be calmed by Merlin. Ansu comforts Anzu but sends support through the mind link to Kassie. Kassie trembles while holding the gun and the door blasts down to reveal the man, Jolan, holding a pistol. He smiles as Kassie backs away and Ansu feels Kassie’s terror.
“Shoot me, little girl, I dare you.” He taunts and Kassie’s scared. “You’re just a scared little runt.” He bullies and Kassie waits for him to do something.
Suddenly he charges and knocks Kassie over, causing her gun to fire and shoot him in the heart! Kassie screamed in shock and Ansu runs out as she holds the gun shakily and Ansu runs over and holds her close as Jolans body is kicked off and Ansu calms Kassie down a little as Kaylie runs out, followed by the others.
“K-Kassie?” She stutters as Kassie puts the gun away in the compartment between the steps and runs to Kaylie, hugging her close.
“He won’t hurt you anymore.” Kassie reminds her and Kaylie clings to her, tears running down her face of joy.
“I think we’d better go, Kassie. I hope you’ll tell us about this or you’ll have our twins on you.” Rika taunts and Kassie nods, then rubs Kaylie’s back. “We’ll leave now.” Rika tells them and Ansu turns to spirit form while the others traipse out together.
Kassie leads Kaylie into Kaylie’s room and sits her down. Kaylie’s shaking as Kassies phone rings, so Kassie answers it.
“Mrs Quan?” A deep voice asks and Kassie freezes. “I’m sorry for your loss.” The man tells her and she gasps in fake shock. “Jon was found dead this morning.” His voice has sympathy in it.
“W-What? Please say you made a mistake!” Kassie sobs and Kaylie’s confused as Ansu stares from the door. “H-He’s my…fiance!” Kassie weeps and Ansu feels her heart break, watching her Hikari cry. “I-I’ll identify him tomorrow…” Kassie’s voice lowers and hangs up, then Kaylie stares at her sadly. “I-It’s Jon…” Kassie starts as tears fall from her amethyst eyes. “He’s dead.” Kassie admits, weeping now and Kaylie holds her big sister close.
Kaylie falls to her knees with Kassie and comforts her. Ansu watches, then leaves silently. Slowly, Kassie calms down and guides Kaylie to lie down, pulling the soft covers over her and kissing her head.
“Kassie…who would do such a thing?” Kaylie asks and Kassie sighs, then stands up.
“Anyone would.” Kassie admits quietly and then smiles. “Don’t worry. I’m sure it was just one of his rivals.” Kassie tells her and leaves.
She returns to her room and Ansu’s watching her. Ansu glares as Kassie sits down and sighs quietly. Kassie looks over and Ansu sits with her and Kassie look down. Ansu relaxes when Kassie looks over.
“It’s just an act, Ansu. I’m glad he’s dead.” Kassie whispers and Ansu nods a little. “I just wish he was here.” Kassie murmurs and Ansu nods a little.
“Go to his grave. Kaylie will feel better if you do.” Ansu suggests and Kassie nods silently. “Give it some time. Attend the funeral and study to keep your mind off of it.” Ansu tells her and Kassie sits silently, then the door clicks open and Kaylie comes in as Kassie regains her act and tears slip down her face.
Kaylie comes over and wipes them quickly and pulls her sister to her, allowing Kassie to weep into her chest. Kaylie calms her sister a little, then turns her lamp on, illuminating the dark room and Kassie’s already paper-filled desk and Kaylie looks at it when one falls off and Kaylie recognises it.
“Kassie?” Kaylie asks quietly and Kassie sits up, a little calmer now. “You’re applying for Kamii?” She asks and Kassie looks at the letter that’s now blown closer to them and picks it up.
“I want to work, Kaylie. After this, I’ll have to work.” Kassie admits and Kaylie looks up at her. “You’re safe here.” Kassie reassures and holds her close.
Kamii is a very hard job. It is a military training camp and people who employ have to spend 2 months away, training hard and learning everything about the military. For Kassie, it was the 2 months away that she couldn’t do but now with Jons death, she could do with some time to herself. Ansu often tried to talk her into it so she could get away from Kaylie for a bit. Kassie sighs and folds it in half as Kaylie watches her.
“I’ll do it, ok? But my friends will check in on you. Ansu’s coming with me to Kamii.” Kassie tells Kaylie, who hugs her and Kassie holds her close.
“Why do you have to leave? And can I trust your friends?” Kaylie asks nervously and Kassie nods silently.
“They’ll protect you while I’m away. If they do anything, let me know ok?” Kassie asks and Kaylie nods quickly.
“Ok, Kassie. But can I go out and hang around with them like you do?” Kaylie asks and Kassie sighs a little.
“They’ve got exams, Kaylie so they will be studying a lot.” Kassie lies and Kaylie nods, then yawns and leaves tiredly. “More like they’ll be updating me a lot.” Kassie adds to Ansu, who smiles a little now.
Soon, two months have passed and Kaylie’s sitting alone in her bedroom. Kassie was coming home today and her friends were picking her up. But Kaylie didn’t want to go. She found Kassie’s mental evaluation sheet while Kassie was off training for Kamii. She was reading it now and she was scared.
“Kassie has an abnormal entity that seems protective of her and has harmed countless nurses. After 2 months, the entity seems to have gone and Kassie seems sane.” Kaylie mutters and the door shuts, so she quickly hides the sheet and runs downstairs to see Kassie, bruised and exhausted.
Rika and Riku hold her up as Ansu takes her and gets her to sit down. Ansu also appears bruised and tired, but not so much so as Kassie. Kaylie runs to her and Kassie looks at her, then falls asleep in the chair.
“Good afternoon, Kaylie.” Ansu greets kindly and Riku and Merlie turn to her as Rika and Merlin tend to Kassie. “You seem scared. Why?” Ansu asks and the other yami’s step closer.
“H-Huh?” Kaylie asks as Kassie stirs. “I-I’m not scared!” She stutters and Ansu frowns. “I just want to see my sister so can you go, please?” She asks and Ansu looks to the others, who all leave.
They turn to spirit form and enter again, unseen by Kaylie. Kassie sits up as Kaylie approaches her and she frowns. Kaylie hugs her and Ansu frowns, but Riku and Merlie hold her back.
“She knows something.” Ansu tells them and they nod. “I can feel it.” Ansu murmurs and Kassie hugs her back.
Kaylie stands and helps Kassie up to her room. Kassie sits down and holds her stomach lightly as Kaylie hugs her close and Kassie smiles. Kassie knew the baby wasn’t harmed. She was just a little hurt from pushing herself.
“Kaylie, I’m going to unpack okay? Why not head to see Jake?” Kassie asks and Kaylie nods, then quickly leaves and Ansu’s concerned as Kassie rummages through her drawer, then freezes.
Ansu comes over as Kassie turns pale and Ansu quickly rubs her back. Kassie gulps and moves to her other drawer and pulls out her mental evaluation sheet and Ansu freezes. Kassie looks to her and she looks at the door.
“I think she found it.” Kassie whispers and Ansu nods a little. “Why didn’t she say anything?” Kassie murmurs and Ansu points out the line about the ‘entity harming countless nurses’ and Kassie freezes. “Uh oh.” Kassie states and Ansu quickly hides it out of Kaylies reach and Kassie sits down.
Kassie doesn’t really have a bump but she’s often uncomfortable and throwing up. Ansu tries to comfort her but Kassie smiles a little and forces herself to lie down and Ansu sits, staring at her.
“I’ll be fine, Ansu.” Kassie promises and Ansu quietly pulls the covers over her and Kassie’s exhausted.
Ansu stands and nods, then quickly looks out the window at the sun high in the sky. Kassies clock read 12:25 and Kassie slowly fell asleep, her body exhausted from Kamii. Kassies clock read 4:15 as she stirred and sat up. Kaylie’s watching from the door, but quickly leaves and Kassie yawns as Ansu looks over.
“She’s been watching you for a while.” Ansu tells her and Kassie stretches, then gets up. “What are you doing?” Ansu asks and Kassie smiles.
Kassie pulls some fresh clothes on and brushes her hair before getting her mental evaluation sheet down and sighs.
Ansu watches as she goes into Kaylie’s room and Kaylie looks over and stands from her desk. Kassie goes over and places the evaluation on the desk and looks at Kaylie, who’s concerned.
“I know you found it.” Kassie admits and Kaylie freezes. “Now, what did you read?” Kassie asks and Kaylie looks down.
“All of it…” Kaylie murmurs and Kassie sighs. “But it’s not true is it?” She asks and Kassie smiles, then turns to Ansu, who’s in spirit form.
“It’s true and I’d have it no other way.” Kassie tells her and turns back to Kaylie. “The ‘entity’ is Ansu.” Kassie tells her briefly and Kaylie frowns.
Ansu gets her own body and appears in the room. Ansu returns to spirit form and walks to Kassie, placing a hand on her shoulder and whispering in her ear.
“B-But Ansu is your friend!” Kaylie freaks and Ansu looks to Kassie. “No! You’re insane!” Kaylie cries and Kassie frowns.
“Do not call me that.” Kassie growls and Ansu appears and quickly calms her. “I had over 10 years of it.” Kassie admits and Ansu leans to Kassie’s ear.
“Do we tell her about Riku and Merlie?” Ansu whispers and Kassie shakes her head. “Kassie is sane, Kaylie.” Ansu defends louder and Kaylie frowns. “She used to have fits of her parents, now she doesn’t.” Ansu admits and Kassie looks down as she feels ill. “Kassie? This baby needs you now. Calm down and I’ll deal with Kaylie.” Ansu reminds and Kassie sighs.
“Fine, just don’t send her away.” Kassie warns and Kaylie pales as Kassie walks out and lies in her own room.
“Kaylie.” Ansu addresses and sits her down. “Kassie is my master and my hikari. If I went against her, I’d be punished. So I will not use my magic on you unless you hurt her.” Ansu explains and Kaylie shivers. “Listen, I’m a spirit. Ok? Kassie hosts me and I protect her. I am in Kassie’s debt for letting me live once more and not being cruel to me.” Ansu tells her and Kassie stirs. “Her baby needs her. So try not to be mean to her or I’ll be forced to send you to the Overhead to punish you. Kassie rarely asks who it is, so I could take you there without suspicion but Kassie won’t like it.” Ansu explains and Kaylie moves away.
Soon, Kassie’s 35 weeks and on maternity leave. Kassie had thrown a baby shower and all her friends and some of her co-workers showed up. That was a week ago and Kassie had been feeling ill recently. Ansu had stuck beside her as Iris had arrived for her baby shower and put Kassie on edge. Iris however had given her a baby crib and it was white and pink and absolutely beautiful. Rika and Riku had given her baby clothes while Merlin and Merlie had given her baby toys and Ansu and Anzu had given her a buggy she’d been looking at for the past week. They all congratulated her and Kassie was happy to be having a baby girl. Kassie stirs and Ansu is talking to Kaylie.
She sits up and holds her big stomach as she feels pain. Kassie freezes and her eyes widen as water trickles down her leg and Ansu freezes too. Ansu had not gained the bump, but knew what was wrong instantly. She walks to Kassie and Kassie feels a contraction and tenses. Kaylie picks up her hospital bag and Ansu calls an ambulance. Ambulance men arrive after 20 minutes and confirm Kassie’s in labour. Kassie has to stay home now and Ansu comforts her as they tell her to push. Kassie cries as she pushes and Kaylie tries to calm her as Ansu tries to comfort Kassie. After 32 hours, a cry is heard in the room and Kassie’s exhausted. She struggles to stay awake and manages to see the wriggling baby in Ansu’s arms now.
“Luna.” Kassie whispers and falls asleep.
Ansu looks from her sleeping hikari to the weeping baby in her arms and passes the baby, Luna as Kassie had called her, to Kaylie and then Kaylie comforts the baby and Ansu lets the ambulance men leave after a while. She then refills Kassies energy and returns to spirit form to help Kassie up. Kassie is more energised now and Kaylie passes the baby to her. Kassie holds the baby close and Ansu smiles a little. Kaylie smiles and silently watches as Kassie holds the little baby in her arms. Kaylie smiles and hugs her sister.
“Did you pick out a name?” Kaylie asks and Kassie sits up as Ansu sits down on the edge of the bed beside her.
“Yes. Her name’s Luna.” Kassie tells her and Ansu smiles at Kassie happily. “Thanks for that. I don’t like being out for long.” Kassie admits and Asnu smiles.
Asnu places the new baby in Kassie’s arms and Kassie smiles down at it. Asnu turns to Kaylie, who’s eying her as Kassie hears a knock on the front door. Asnu stands in her body and goes downstairs to get the door. Kassie gently jogs Luna as Kaylie watches, a slight hint of guilt in her eyes. Ansu returns with a woman in a smart suit and Kassie looks over as Ansu is looking very protective. Kassie lies Luna down and Asnu keeps her sat down as Kaylie turns to the woman.
