The Package

The package

It all started with this phone call. Nothing interesting happened in the call anyway. A man called and he, without waiting for me to say anything, said that he has something with him which he encoded as “the package” and then when I said hello, just said “sorry, wrong number” and cut the call.

For the next fifteen minutes, I could neither focus on The Princess diaries that I’ve been watching, nor could I stop thinking about “the package” which the mystery wrong number-man had referred to. What if, by PACKAGE, he meant some little girl he just kidnapped....or a wealthy businessman’s body parts, which he had ripped off deliberately, because the man once had an affair with his wife while in college?...

Just shut up!!

I tried concentrating on the princess diaries, but this mystery man was not ready to get out of my head. I went to the kitchen and made myself some Rasna juice and then came back to watch the movie again. I should say, I felt a little chilled after the chilled Rasna travelled through my oesophagus. Just right then, the phone rang again.

“Hello”. I picked up the phone.

.......

“Hello?”

Nobody answered.

I cut the phone.

Was this a trap? I was sure it was the mystery man again. I checked the number the call had come from. The mystery man’s number matched with the one that spooked me again. This IS a trap. Maybe after all...... I’M HIS PACKAGE!! OH MY GOD? Should I lock the door? Or should I go to my neighbour’s home, for safety?

I did neither. I just sat there and watched the movie like a stone. I don’t know why on earth I did that!

In the evening, my mom returned with my uncle Russel.

“Did anyone call when we were not here?”My mom asked.

“What? No...No one... just some wrong number...” I mumbled and tried to stay calm.

“I did call” said Uncle Russel.

“The wrong number was me, Jo. I accidently dialled the home number. I was in a hurry, so I couldn’t continue talking to you sweetheart.” He said.

“Oh”. That was all I could say. Right then I realised how stupid and how easy was I to be fooled up by someone...

But then it stroke me... Why did Uncle Russel call me again then? And most importantly, he kept quiet. He didn’t even answer. Hmm... That’s fishy...

It was past seven in the evening and I was already starving. My mom and Uncle Russel had gone to the nearby restaurant to buy some dinner. Oh, I forgot to tell this. My mom’s not cooking as she is not well. She just underwent some therapy. So, Uncle Russel had been staying with us for the past two days. Or else, it’s just me and my mom in the house. I never really thought Uncle Russel liked me. He even tried to throw me away to an orphanage once, so that he could find someone better than my daddy for my mom.

What? Why am I saying all this?

I switched on the T.V.

Wow! Death at a funeral. I should see this movie, I thought. Even though I’ve seen it three times before.

My stomach growled. Just then, the phone rang. I checked the number first, this time. Wow. Uncle Russel. I picked up the phone.

“Hello? Uncle Russel? Did you get the food?”

....... Nobody answered.

“Hello?”

........

“Uncle Russel? Can you hear me?”

........

“Hello-

“The package is ready!”

........

The end

Hi there!

This is an interesting little story you've got here. I like the way it ends so ambiguously, with "the package is ready" followed by silence. I also liked the use of periods to indicate silence on the line.

I'm a little confused as to why Uncle Russell would admit the caller was him, however. Finding out does add to the creepiness at the end, because there might be someone dangerous in the narrator's home, but the way we find out is funky. It seems like it would make more sense for her to simply recognize the number after a while or realize that it's the same as Uncle Russell's number. Or perhaps, after thinking about it, she recognizes his voice. Or maybe she recognizes his voice and that's why he fesses up about it.

It also seems a little over-the-top to me that, after the first phone call, the narrator immediately thinks "the package" might be a kidnapped child or the body parts of an enemy. I can see someone thinking the call was weird or even creepy, but I think those thoughts would make more sense after the second call - because while you might get a strange call from a wrong number once, for the same number to call again about the same thing is pretty suspicious.

Finally, the idea that Uncle Russell tried to have her sent to an orphanage to set her mom up with someone new is also melodramatic. If that's the case, why would mom even let Uncle Russell stay with them, even if she needs help? It was just sort of strange to me, although in that case I guess it does give us a little insight into why he might be calling and presumably referring to the narrator as "the package."

Hey, thank you for the review. I know it's pretty weird, the way the story goes.. I just wrote this as I got bored at home. Nothing genuine. But I did note down your advises. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply me. I'll take care of the grievances during my next post.

Hello, SilpaS, PastelSlushie here for review number 39 for #RevMo ! Let's get right into it! Also, welcome to YWS! It's great to see you've already posted something.

The one that confused me the most about this was closer to the end when our main character is getting a call from her uncle. The dots after every time something is said confuses me in terms of format and why it's there - is it supposed to represent something? Another thing I'm not the biggest fan of is how some sentences are in all caps. It really stands out from the rest of this, and I really wouldn't say in the best way.

Other than those two complaints, I liked this. I've been reading a lot of novel chapters and it felt really nice to read something short and sweet and simple. This has a mysterious aroma that lingers from the beginning to the end, especially since we don't know 100% what exactly the package is. It makes the reader have to fill in the empty spaces with their big imaginations! However, I feel that telling us that the main character's mother is not well seems really placed at random and seems very out of place. I feel it could we reworded to: "My mom and Uncle Russel went to a nearby restaurant to pick up food since she wasn't feeling well and not being able to cook." It goes along a lot smoother and the information doesn't seem placed at random.

Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions or disagree with anything in my review. Best of luck in your future pieces,

Pastel

I know the story was a little bit confusing. I actually didn't put my best on it. I just wrote something as I got bored. Thank you for having the time to correct me and I promise I'll make my next posting worth reading .

This is very well written. I particularly enjoy the specific descriptions of what the narrator was doing in their ordinary life, because the story seems to try to form a homely feel that is constantly unsettled by the narrator's intrusive thoughts and the phone calls. I do feel, however, that there was a bit of dramatization when the narrator explains that their Uncle Russell tried to give them away to an orphanage, but it could be easily reworded to make
more sense or sound less odd. The ending is a little bit weird, as in it has a bit of a messy conclusion, though maybe the author wanted to leave the ending open to interpretation or eventual realization of what happened to the reader. Overall, I think that the story is very interesting and has the potential to be even better with some rewording and clarity of the plot.

Thank you for your review. I know that the ending was pretty weird as I merely rushed to it. I wrote this story when I got bored at home and at the same time, YWS kept asking me to post something up. So, I just tried something. But I really appreciate you for spending your valuable time for correcting me and I'll make sure that I correct my mistakes and post something worth reading next time. Thank you.
