Teen Love and What kills it

PreviousNext

LOVE, a simple four letter word which is the center of our universe, the nucleus to our atom, some would even say the reason of our existence! LOVE is everyone’s desire and nobody really despises it but are we glorifying it to an unachievable level where everything to attain it leaves us in disappointment?

As I look at my YouTube feed now-a- days, prom proposals are more than a common occurrence. Having been part of a generation who grew up watching Romantic Comedies, my heart does melt while watching the creativity of these “proposals” but it also leaves me wondering, are we overdoing it? We are part of a time where confessing love or feeling it isn’t enough. It has to be done in a way which is extravagant and heart-warming, calling into question whether we “love” being in love or just the feeling of being “loved”. Whether we ask someone to prom because we want to share this special occasion together or because not going to prom with a date could be frowned upon.

Love is as simple as being there for someone through everything whether it be your worst moment or your best. The person you love should be the person you stay connected with emotionally and intellectually or just a person you enjoy being with (at least that’s what I think it is). As the long search for the meaning of love goes on, I think we are all hooked to the side effects of love rather than enjoying the intimacy of being in love. Whether it is the Adam Sandler movies or the “just couple things” or whatever else, being in love and getting physical is bang in there in pop culture and has become a trend rather than a feeling. The bar for love has gone up so high that you expect to “fall” in love rather than just feel a connection and want to never leave his/her sight rather than just enjoying the people. LOVE is not like the movies where everything falls into place but a constant work In progress and I think the sheer feeling of it not falling into place has left countless teenagers including me wondering if what I feel is true love or just the need to be loved by others to validate myself. As I continue to try to comprehend love, I hope that I find the Cinderella to my Prince Charming, but I do realize as long as we get along, Anastasia would do.

Hi there! I'm here to review your fabulous work!

Let me start by saying that this is a very intriguing piece of work. It had me wondering and redefining the meaning of love which I had in my head for quite some time. But in the end, I realized I was leaning towards the same observation.

Now, there wasn't much to nitpick because it was short and sweet. I wish it had been a little longer, though. I feel as if all the article was rushed, with you trying to get your point across. Which you did, of course. But I just wish you had it done more elaborately.

LOVE, a simple four letter word which is the center of our universe, the nucleus to our atom, some would even say the reason of our existence! LOVE is everyone’s desire and nobody really despises it but are we glorifying it to an unachievable level where everything to attain it leaves us in disappointment?

I liked the beginning of this paragraph, but towards the end I became a bit confused at this point:

LOVE is everyone’s desire and nobody really despises it but are we glorifying it to an unachievable level where everything to attain it leaves us in disappointment?

Now see, everybody loves 'LOVE' but I don't see how we can glorify it to an unattainable level. According to me, anyone can feel love, whether it is glorified or not. But I agree about the disappointment, though.

And then the part about prom kind of threw me off a bit. I thought that was a bit unrelated as we're discussing about love. But that was me, anyway :)

Well, that's it for my super short review!

I really liked reading it! Good job!

Keep Writing!

Cheers!

Hi
This piece is very well written. I believe, as a teen, that you have captured my exact opinion to what love seems like through any other teen nowadays.

When you mention the need you may feel to be loved by others to validate yourself I think you got a little side-tracked by a different type of love although I may just be confused a little.

I thought it was especially great when you added a little humour into the end sentence.it was a great way to wrap thing up.

Well done, continue writing.IT WAS AWESOME
xx

Thanks for the reply. Yeah i think i tried bringing a more sort of societal pressure of doing it and all the forever alone sort-of dimension, which doesn't go with it so yeah i get the confusion.
Glad you liked it.

Hey! XD
And welcome to YWS. So this is your first work; and it’s all about a very deep and meaningful subject. I like the opening line:
“LOVE, a simple four letter word which is the center of our universe, the nucleus to our atom, some would even say the reason of our existence!”
I’m not too sure about the meaning you are putting across in this sentence: “LOVE is everyone’s desire and nobody really despises it but are we glorifying it to an unachievable level where everything to attain it leaves us in disappointment?” It seems a little bit contrived and as though it won’t be true for everyone. You lose relatability a little here.
This next bit goes off on a tangent completely and I’m not sure what the message of the piece is at all anymore: “As I look at my YouTube feed now-a- days, prom proposals are more than a common occurrence.”
It’s all a little bit weird.
This is two words, or should be hyphenated I think: “heartwarming,”
You’ve got massive chunks of thought here: “Love is as simple as being there for someone…” that really need to be broken down and the examples you give at the end of the text weren’t really relevant either; and to be honest, I didn’t really understand them.
I see what you’re trying to do here, but it needs to be a lot better organised. Edit this and you’ll have something a bit more inspiring.

Thanks for the reply, glad to be here :)
I get what you're saying about it being contrived, i just wanted to try a sum up of what i wanted to discuss later, i guess it wasn't the best idea. The inspiration of the idea came from prom-posals so i wanted to plug it in, didn't realise it didn't go with the flow and came across as confusing. Thanks ill try a better organization next time. Anything else i can work on for the next writing and btw i didn't edit it out much (except the heart-warming typo) because i wanted to keep the piece just the way it is although I'll work on the next one with your suggestions.

What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god -- the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals!
