Frank “Lumpy” Carney is a famous Kansan and he may be the world’s “Pizza King”. In 1974, he was named “Man of the Year” in the Multi-Unit Food Service Origination. Then, in 1991, he was inducted into the International Franchise Association Hall of Fame. Although he had many personal achievements in his life, such as placing a fast 4th in a1977 sports car race and producing the film “A Halfway House Christmas” in 2005, Mr. Carney is most famous for starting Pizza Hut, the largest pizza chain in the world.
Frank Carney was born on April 26, 1938 in Wichita, Kansas. He still lives in Wichita with his wife Zenda. They love their eight children and eleven grandchildren. He likes to golf, lift weights and run 16-24 miles a week. In addition, Mr. Carney currently sits on the Intrust Bank Board of Directors.
Mr. Carney was raised in a large, close family with six siblings. Tragedy struck, at age 10, when Frank’s father died. He went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Business from the University of Wichita (Kansas). In 1980, he was recognized with the WSU Alumni Achievement Award.
His “Pizza King” fame was about to start with $600 that he and his brother, Dan, borrowed from their mother. On June 15, 1958, with that $600 they started Pizza Hut. Frank was barely 20 years old! They named their new company Pizza Hut for three reasons. They wanted the word “pizza” in the title, there were only three spaces left on the sign and their store was shaped like a hut. So, Pizza Hut was just the right name!
Did you know the original Pizza Hut is still around? It was moved brick by brick to the Wichita State University campus after it became threatened by the expansion of Kellogg Avenue. The brothers were very happy to have the building on the WSU campus where it is still in operation today.
Frank and Dan Carney guided the fledgling company in its earliest days in the belief that growth would come through dedicated employees and a strong commitment to quality. In 1971, Pizza Hut became the world leader in pizza sales, giving many people in small towns their first taste of pizza. The business expanded by opening new restaurants in small towns. By 1972, they had opened over a thousand restaurants across the USA. The brothers give huge credit to the early franchisees. In 1973, Dan handed the presidency of Pizza Hut over to Frank. Then, Pizza Hut went international, opening restaurants in Japan, Canada, and England. In 1977, Pizza Hut was sold to PepsiCo, Inc. for more than $300 million dollars. The exact amount has never been stated publicly.
In 1980, Pizza Hut opened its 4,000th store. Even more amazing than that, in 2001, they sponsored a pizza delivery to the international space station!!! Pizza Hut made history again in 2010 when it allowed customers to order online in Spanish.
Pizza Hut uses over a half a billion pounds of tomatoes every year, plus nearly three quarters of a billion pounds of pepperoni. And it is the world’s largest buyer of cheese! Today, the company has approximately 34,000 restaurants, delivery- carry out, and kiosks in 100 countries with over 300,000 employees.
Believe it or not, Mr. Carney didn’t stop there! In 1994, he decided to support Papa John’s Pizza because he believed that their quality of ingredients were the best, even compared to those Pizza Hut was using. Two of his children, Tressa and Trevor, helped him with his Papa John’s Pizza franchises and by 2001, Frank owned 133 locations. So guess what? He found a better pizza!
Now do you agree? Frank Carney, a famous Kansan, is the “Pizza King”.

Hi there!
So I know people have already kind of said this, but I think you need more of a focus here. Now, you do have a clear topic that seems to be the focus of this piece, based on the title and first sentence. However, Frank Carney's rise to Pizza King kind of gets lost in the shuffle with details like his other interests and the number of siblings he has. And then there's the death of his father - you say "tragedy struck," but it's literally one line that states his father died when he was ten; we never get to see how this might have affected young Frank in some way, which makes it feel like a pointless fact.
I think that's the real problem with these extraneous details - yes, you're informing us of facts about Mr. Carney, but the facts should all more or less tie together to drive the main point home. Otherwise it just reads like a bullet list of facts about the person in question. So for example, where you talk about his interests like weightlifting and running - that might actually work better in your conclusion. Like "Frank Carney is no longer in the pizza business. These days, he spends his time doing x, y, and z. However, with all that his pizza startup back in 1958 has achieve, he is still undeniably the Pizza King." This way, you can introduce his current interests but still talk about it in the framework of his title as Pizza King. It will make the essay tie together better, plus (in this specific instance) give you a stronger conclusion that won't sound so much like a persuasive essay (because you're not asking the reader if they've been persuaded).
It's not everyday I review an essay, so I am excited for a change(: May I introduce myself? I am SecreteJournalist, but feel free to call me Brie!
Shall I say what I like and what I dislike? I suppose so!
Likes:
1) I enjoy how informative and factual the whole essay is. It's nice to learn new things. Especially about something so common!
2) This article is rather persuasive, due to the last few lines. It lets you debate on the majority of ideas of Frank Carney!
Dislikes/Suggestions:
1) I do agree with Elinor, this article has many enjoyable facts, but there is not much to support or go along with these facts. Adding more and taking away topics that veer off topic could help give this article some more life!
2)Like I mentioned in suggestion '1' , this article seems to veer off topic. For example, it talks of his family, and then ends on why he is pizza king. Explaining this more may help the article out a wee bit more.
I like this article, and with some fixing up, it is sure to get an 'A' at school(: With some work, this will become and informative piece to the point where people are going to want to read more essays from you! Great Job, and keep writing such amazing articles! I wish you the best of luck with my review and your article.
Sincerely,
SecreteJournalist

and now today many branches of Pizza Hut are working in many cities of a lot of countries throughout the world.........an informative piece of work, i must say and i must appreciate...well done....because if are gonna write biography of anyone, you must have a lot of information and knowledge about it
Hey RavenLords!
Welcome to YWS! I thought this was a very interesting piece. It works well as a quick read if we want to know basic facts about Frank Carney, which I think is a great starting place for you to expand upon the detail and liven the richness of this essay.
I'm a little unclear as to what your focus is. You state in the first and last sentences that Carney is supposedly a "Pizza King" which would lead me to believe your essay is persuasive. But the rest of this piece is merely informative, and does nothing to advance the argument that he may be the "Pizza King". I don't' even know exactly what this means. But if you decide you want to take a persuasive slant with this, I would do the following; clarify exactly what you mean, and offer examples to show why Pizza Hut beats out other pizza chains like Dominos and Papa Johns.
The second thing I would comment on is that this piece is rather dry. You state plain facts, which are fun, but don't offer much in the way of description or other details. Instead of beginning the piece like this, tell us a story. Tell us why Carney decided to start in the pizza business. Show, don't tell, when it comes to facts about his life!
Best of luck with this! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
Thank you Elinor for the Review, it means a lot! I will try to work on the things you told me. By the way this is not a Persuasive essay, it is an informational but I agree with you that it sounds like it's a Persuasive.
Thanks again,
