Brave heart! A tribute to soldiers

PreviousNext

BRAVE HEART!

A person so brave and wise

Rich or poor, Brahmin or shudra

None is considered.

Courage to face death

Bravery to leave the loved in the dust

And safeguard millions of unknown residents.

Day in and day out, sun or rain

Cold or warm, sick or sound,

Stiff he stands with the nation’s pride

Peace and rivalry are his associates

Peace is his true buddy in need

But rivalry is a flatterer indeed

Peace gives him strength to look forward

Rivalry keeps him awake

He takes the strength from peace

And keeps it awake to conquer rivalry.

Rivalry quests hard at him,

Yet with his chest out and chin up

Challenges rivalry to come even harder.

He is the only obedient student in patriotism class,

He is the only one who prefers to take death

On his chest rather than on his back.

He is the one we should worship

Not the hypothetical artworks within four walls.

wakeup is all I can say!

Hello there Pruthvi! :D Welcome to YWS.

I like the idea of your poem overall, but there's always room for improvement, so now I'm going to just break it down bit by bit here to point out some things you might consider adding or changing.

A person so brave and wise

Rich or poor, Brahmin or shudra

None is considered.

That last line doesn't quite make sense- I might say something like, "It doesn't matter" because then you're focusing on the fact that he's brave and wise, and saying that rich/poor doesn't matter. I think that might be what you were going for, so I hope that it makes sense why that should probably change.

Courage to face death

Bravery to leave the loved in the dust

And safeguard millions of unknown residents.

Day in and day out, sun or rain

Cold or warm, sick or sound,

Stiff he stands with the nation’s pride

So, you've already mentioned that he's brave and wise. So saying that he's brave again is a bit redundant. I think that "and safeguard millions of unknown residents" is getting there a little more- you want to describe these qualities more than list them. Which brings me to my next point. I think you should add some more actions. I get that it's not a piece about soldiers actively fighting, just honouring them, but I think using some actions to display character traits is just as important in poetry as it would be in a novel. "Safeguard" is a good one, but even though standing still shows pride and respect, it also makes him appear as if he's not really doing anything, not protecting anything, just standing passively. I would use some strong verbs along with description here to show his national pride and loyalty. For example, "Sacrificing his every day life" "Leaving behind his family"- if you want to keep the standing stiff part, you could make that a bit more active too, like, "Stamding stiff- re refuses to back down" or something along those lines. Just experiment, and see what you think!

Peace and rivalry are his associates

Peace is his true buddy in need

But rivalry is a flatterer indeed

Peace gives him strength to look forward

Rivalry keeps him awake

He takes the strength from peace

And keeps it awake to conquer rivalry.

Rivalry quests hard at him,

Yet with his chest out and chin up

Challenges rivalry to come even harder

Alright. To be honest here, this part confused me a bit. You bring up peace and rivalry, and then you kind of describe their relationship with the soldier, which is rather contradictory and lengthy, making it hard to follow or understand. I think you can largely cut this part out. Peace and rivalry certainly are contradictory in nature, and if you wanted to get that across, you could do so succinctly by saying something like, "Peace and rivalry are his associates / misleading him with their contradiction of each other" or whatever point you wanted to get across about peace and rivalry.

He is the only one who prefers to take death

On his chest rather than on his back.

Okay, but why would it matter if he took death on his chest? What does that mean?? I think I get what you're trying to say, but I might say "on his feet rather than his back"- it's more of a common phrase, like you're going down fighting rather than just dying in your sleep. That might be s bit easier to understand.

Overall, this is a pretty good start! Welcome again to YWS. :) Can't wait to see what you write next!

Firstly I appreciate your suggestions as it has given me a space for improvement. As it was my first poem written I needed someone like you to point out the drawbacks. I'm glad you could do it for me your.
Cheers
Pruthvi .

That's only your first poem? That's great! I hope you continue to write more. ^_^

Before I start reviewing I think it's amazing how you chose to honor the soldiers fighting for this country. It was a beautiful poem and raised the bar for more of your work (that I can't wait to read). This is one of my first reviews so don't pin it against me hahaha.

First off I love the title. It relates to many different things, and makes you think of different things. The first thing it makes me think of is the movie "Braveheart" which can relate to the braveness and courage of the soldiers and people in that movie. Great choice!!

I love the first few lines, and descriptive you made it in only few words. It's amazing how much you put into it. This whole poem is excellent and how you portrayed nationalism is amazing. I could really feel the pride in even yours words about people serving their country.

I have to wrap this up, because it just hit 12:20 and that's my alarm to start writing my English essay :) so anyways, it was amazing to read your poem. May I suggest you start dipping your toes in short stories? You have really good descriptions, and you can tell you're gifted. Writing is a gist, and you are excellent at it.

Thank you Lubbeljl, I'll surely take into consideration all of your suggestions in my next writeup.
