Title: I CAN'T GO!

In a neighborhood where the streetlights barely work, three boys grew up together. Marcus, Jamal, and Andre. Every time a door cracked open for them, one of them would mutter, "I can't go." At first, it sounded casual, like an excuse. But as the years stacked up, "I can't go" became a way of life. "I can't go to camp. We ain't got the money." "I can't join that program. The streets won't let me." By their twenties, the shortcuts they took weren't shortcuts at all. One night, choices caught up with them. Marcus and Jamal ended up in prison. The courtroom echoed with silence where words used to be. "I should've gone." was the sentence that haunted them. Only Andre walked free. And freedom felt heavy. No victory, just the weight of "I can't go" echoing in his head. Years later, when Marcus and Jamal got out, Andre was waiting, no speeches, no judgment, just open arms. For the first time, nobody said, "I can't go." They just asked, "Where do we wanna go?" And for once, the answer was, "Anywhere we choose."

Wow this is great! I love your ability to express everything.
But this is a bit tight, and seems more like a concept. But if you wrote a book with this, I would absolutely read it.
My suggestions are to give the reader(and characters!)more room to breathe so we could get to know them!

Otherwise this is a great introductory paragraph, and if you post more I will gladly read them and review them!

Keep it up!

I was wondering how you could fit three stories into less than 2 minutes of reading time… And I must say, that the formatting of this one doesn’t look quite appealing. But let’s read and see if it’s a statement!

I feel like you didn’t give each of these characters room to breathe. It might as well have only been one guy or two since you didn’t really elaborate which choices that they didn’t make made them end up on the streets.

I do like how you bring it around in the end… but this feels more like a proof-of-concept than a story 😊

Good morning and thank you for your constructive criticism. I would like to add that this is just a short summary of my book. I have changed the names and also given each character more background. Once again I thank you for your views and ideas.

I really connected with this piece because it feels so realistic. Young people miss opportunities all the time because of money, pressure from their environment, fear, or the belief that certain paths just aren’t meant for them. The repetition of “I can’t go” shows how those excuses can slowly become a mindset.

What made the story hit harder for me is that it often happens the other way around. Sometimes the person who gets out doesn’t come back. Sometimes prison changes people, friendships fall apart, or nobody’s waiting with open arms. That’s why Andre’s choice to be there for Marcus and Jamal feels so meaningful.

The line “I should’ve gone” was especially powerful because it shows how regret can come after the opportunity is already gone. The story moves through a dark reality, but the ending gives it hope. When they finally ask, “Where do we wanna go?” it feels like they’re choosing a future instead of letting the past choose for them.

Overall, this was short yet powerful. It doesn’t ignore how harsh life can be, but it still leaves room for redemption. Great work!
