 Part 1 of Chapter 2

Old Friend and Empty Envelopes

Alexej’s announcement echoed in the alley for a while. Or was it just an echo created by her brain to come to terms with this bizarre news faster? Second variant sounded a bit too dramatic, but she couldn’t let Alexej be always the drama queen number one, right?

Or maybe it was really just a normal echo. Parisian architecture was always a little bit weird in these parts of city.

Deinne wasn’t sure, but her tongue, trained over the years for harsh answers, got ahead: “Funny.” She realised that it didn’t sound very convincing, so she quickly added: “And now seriously, you fool.”

After a few seconds of shock, Deinne was able to remind herself  that she didn’t have time for any of this. If she ran, there would still be a chance that she would make it to the meeting with Master Andersen, which meant that was still a chance to seize the future. Or at least to have a decent cup of coffee. She wasn’t sure which of those was her priority anymore.

If someone else told her that her life’s biggest dream was about to come true, she would either send them straight to a place where the sun doesn’t shine, or run to the train station. (Because of course she wanted to go to London. Every mechanic wanted to go to London.)

However, it would depend on who the messenger would be. It always does, with these things and by these things she meant “life changing insane announcements”.

And though Alexej was probably the only person she didn't want to slap in the face most of the time, in the last tiring months, his stupid jokes were starting to get on her nerves. Not that he wasn’t annoying before, but a migraine can make everything worse, and migraines were only things Deinne could confidently call her family legacy.

Exactly, Deinne thought. Stupid joke. It’s just another one of his attempts to make himself the centre of attention of anyone standing close enough. Wait two minutes and he’ll start telling you about how he beat someone at cards today with his awful magic tricks.

Deinne didn’t like that it sounded like she was convincing herself.

She didn’t want it to sound like she was convincing herself.

That created the possibility that she needed to convince herself.

Which was nonsense. Absolute nonsense.

Alexej was trying his best during her internal chaos, but he was probably getting bored. He was rocking back on his heels (of all his habits, this annoyed Deinne the most) and humming something - maybe one of his Polish folk songs.

“What do you mean, ‘Now seriously’?” A comically offended expression once again settled on his face once he noticed that Deinne’s attention returned from her inner roller-coaster. “I’m serious! You could say that at this moment I am the most serious person in whole Paris!”

Deinne rolled her eyes. A comical fool. But then, Alexej surprised her. Instead of continuing to act like a circus performer dressed as a mechanic (which he really was, if Deinne had to be honest with herself), he put his hand in one of various pockets of his coat.

Then to other one.

Alexej went on like this through every single pocket of his gigantic coat in which he looked like an emaciated scarecrow. Deinne gave a long, eloquent motion to the watch on her wrist. Slowly but surely, her time was running out, and although it was nice to see him after a long week, the meeting that awaited her was more important. This was about the future, after all. Their future. Maybe even world's future, because who knows what might they create with a proper budget.

“Hurrying somewhere?” Alexej asked as he emptied inner pockets.

“No.” She felt her left eyebrow twitch again. She thought she was rid of it for good, but apparently the old tic was still calling for a word whenever she felt really close to yelling at someone. But also... something about that question's formulation felt strange.
Weird sentence structure, she realised. Maybe growing up with linguists left a trail after all.

“Doesn’t sound like that…oh, don’t you happen to have a date?”

Instead of answering, she simply burst out a quick hysteric laugh.

“My mistake,” admitted Alexej. “Deinne Leuvre and finding a boyfriend don’t go together.”

“You had enough of boyfriends for both of us.” She couldn’t miss at opportunity for a remark and noticed that his ears were starting to be a similar shade to his red hair.

Although it was good to be able to make fun of Alexej again, she was absolutely on the edge of time. Actually, she realised, there is no time left. Somewhere in the distance, a clock tower began to strike. The sun has already coloured the sky red.

It was a strange realisation. One of those who make whole world go numb and slower and weird, slightly off, slightly wrong.

The thought of all the opportunities that were just shattering in front of her eyes was chased away by the envelope which Alexej pulled out of pocket after about ten attempts.

She recognised it.

Of course she recognised it.

The light yellow envelope with the brown seal could only came from the Order of Mechanics.

Alexej handed it to her jovially, as if it was confirmation that they had won a bag full of gold bars (which could very well have been true - you can never know with Order). She quickly turned it over in her fingers. The paper felt expensive and the broken wax seal was not that ugly shade of yellow used by mechanics in Paris.

Instead, it was dark green, the addressee was listed as Our Parisian Colleagues, and the address sat with the address of their workshop. The number of stamps told her that the envelope hadn’t came a really long way - only one with ships in it. With growing curiosity, she opened the envelope and peered inside.

She immediately looked up and glared at Alexej.

“It’s empty.”

“Of course it’s empty.”

“What’s so great about an empty envelope?” Her famous eye-twitch was coming back.

“That there was something in it before!” Another overly wide smile spread across his face and he handed her two pieces of paper. Train tickets, she realised.

Deinne grabbed them and once they were in her hands, she read what was written on them several times in a row. Alexej must have realised that this was a critical point, so he sharpened his attention for a record two minutes and did not devote himself to the other three activities (like humming, traditional dancing and pigeon-watching) at once.

“They’re to London,” Deinne said, realising how pointless it sounded.

They were to London.

Two tickets to London arrived at the address of the workshop where only two mechanics worked. Deinne liked this kind of maths way more than the meaningless equations she almost had heart attacks over at university.

"You weren’t joking,” she said slowly.

"I sometimes do that.”

She handed them back to Alexej, who carefully - as if they were made of porcelain and painted with real gold - put them away in the inside pocket of his coat.

Deinne suppressed the urge to start pacing up and down the alley, sorting through the feelings that had now turned into a bunch of crazy squirrels. Instead, she took a deep breath and tried to squeeze the imaginary squirrels into a little ball and shove it into the darkest part of her mind, from where it would hopefully never come out again.

Thoughts were racing through her head at extreme speed and Deinne felt a small smile appear on her face. Only small, of course. She definitely wasn’t grinning like a madman who just found winner’s ticket to lottery.

“Have you already packed our bags?” she asked. “The sooner we are in London, the sooner we get to the Headquarters.”

***

Of course that Alexei didn’t think about packing bags at all.

Deinne mentally slapped herself for even considering relying on Alexej’s non-existing ability to plan things step. No, instead he opened the envelope as soon as he saw it in their mailbox in La Poste and ran off to find her. It was very stupid and very Alexej-like.

“You really don’t know who delivered it?” she asked for the thousandth time as they ran down the empty street. The Order of Mechanics always sent important shipments with an escort, since by law mechanical documents could only pass through the hands of other mechanics and the monarch.

"Nah, of course I do!"

"Alexej, for Saint Peter's sake-"

Notes:

La Poste is main post office in France. Deinne is talking about Central Post of the Louvre. You can find quite a lot of pictures of it, I've actually went there and it's pretty busy but cool place.

St. Peter's a patron of clockmakers, the closest thing from our world to this story's mechanics.

First of all: love the name Deinne :)
I know I have not read the first chapter but I hope you can bear with me anyway!

I really like your writing style so far and how you manage to sprinkle in character notes like so:

(Because of course she wanted to go to London. Every mechanic wanted to go to London.)

I find that really charming!

Usually I wouldn't nitpick like that but your writing is really solid, so this is something to watch out for:
“life changing insane stuff”

Using "stuff" here is really unspecific and it would work wonders if you could use something character or setting specific that makes this more unique!

I really like this sequence:
Deinne didn’t like that it sounded like she was convincing herself.

She didn’t want it to sound like she was convincing herself.

It says so much about the MC!!

It feels like you're missing a word or something here:
her attention returned from roller-coaster.

Hmm I don't know why he would say that. Or rather, I feel like the narration has been so focused on his big reveal from last chapter (whatever that may be) that I expected he would pull something out of his pockets to cement his position. Something that would convince his friend that he's telling the truth. Instead we get this?
“It didn’t sound like that…oh, don’t you happen to have a date?”

That feels completely out of left field. As if you didn't resolve the other plotpoint before heading into this.
Although I do like Deinne rebuking him with the "you had enough for both of us" that is funny =D

It's a bit unfortunate too because this feels like it also distracts from the fact that time is running out. Like, if she needs to be somewhere, does Alexej really have time to make fun of her? Even if he doesn't know that (he does ask if she needs to hurry somewhere, right?) it still feels like a strange disconnect. As if Deinne should have said "Do we have time for that" instead of laughing?

I really, really enjoy the dynamic between Deinne and Alexej. They are fun and contrast nicely. Also interesting that they are both mechanics working for the same workshop and apparently have the same goal and yet it's Deinne who had this world-saving meeting. (What she mean by world-saving? Is she over-dramatic, does she view her life that important or is it true? because if it's true, then why did she even let Alexej distract her?)

I do want to find out more about the world of mechanics. I really enjoyed this chapter! Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

Heya Tikaya! Thanks for noticing the "stuff" and "rollercoaster" thing, these were mistakes made while translating that I haven't really caught, heh. Great that you noticed them!

That feels completely out of left field.

Yes, I can see that, but to clarify some things: especially in the first chapters I'm trying to piece together the character traits so that I can fully focus on the plot later. The thing is, yes, Alexei is very blunt. He'll say random stuff at random times, he really isn't the type of character that thinks before speaking, especially around the people who are close to him. It's something to be flashed out better in the future, but I wanted to have instances of this character trait even in early chapters! :]
(What she mean by world-saving? Is she over-dramatic, does she view her life that important or is it true? because if it's true, then why did she even let Alexej distract her?)

Not to spoil anything, but this is more of a "Deinne's point of view" type of thing. World will not fall apart because she didn't get to the meeting, but there are some reason why she needs to get there that will be discussed later. After all, we can't reveal everything in second chapter, right? ;) Reason why she even let herself fall into this conversation was in first chapter :P

That's all from me, thank you for your review! It's always great to get some constructive criticism :] I noticed that you're a realtively new member, so welcome to YWS! Hope you'll enjoy your time here! :D

Thanks for your reply! I'm really looking forward to reading the first chapter which I have put on my list for the day that the Green Room feels less... overful. Also thank you for the warm welcome, I'll try my best to fit right in ^^

Hello, My Friend!

Hi Crow!! Glad to see this book getting an update! Anyway, it’s me, Raven, and I’m here to review the next chapter in this great story, using my Familiar method! Let’s dive right in, shall we?

What The Black Eyes See
~ A full analysis and breakdown

Woo, that was an awesome way to follow up such a promising opening! I really enjoyed following this interaction between Alexej and Deinne, getting to know their angles as friends a bit more, and oh boy—what a development! Tickets to London, and Alexej never mentioned who sent them or why (or he doesn't know lol)...Let's get into the details though.

Plot and Pacing: Very nice! The beginning was definitely heavy on exposition, but I enjoyed getting to know more about Deinne and her typical behaviors. Likewise, as mentioned, the tickets were such a big surprise considering the focus put on London thus far!

Descriptions and Setting: Very nice! Not much to say in terms of setting, as it didn't change much from the last chapter (not a complaint that's just why I'm not remarking much on it lol). I really liked your attention to body language between the characters, like Deinne's facial tics and Alexej's fidgeting. Not only was it a nice "show don't tell" way of displaying their personalities, but it made things feel a little more dynamic as we read.

Characterization: Deinne and Alexej both are fun characters thus far! Especially when they're together. I love how Deinne comes off as this blunt, professional figure that's all about keeping schedules, and has a low capacity for nonsense, whereas Alexej comes off as pretty much the exact opposite. It made for so many funny moments!

Grammar and Wording: I only caught one minor, more specific thing that I dropped into the next section. Otherwise, looks great!

Where The Dagger Points
~ Some nitpicks and little recommendations

Not much to put here at all! Let’s break it down…

And although Alexej was probably the only person she didn’t want to slap in face most of the time, in the last tiring months were his is stupid jokes starting to get on her nerves.

This sentence felt just a little bit on the choppy side. Perhaps to help, "And though Alexej was probably the only person she didn't want to slap in the face most of the time, in the last tiring months, his stupid jokes were starting to get on her nerves.

That’s all! And as always, this is just my opinion and I am no professional, so please take all advice with a grain of salt <3

Why The Grin Widened
~ My reactions, theories, and favorite parts

Oh boy, theories and favorite parts! Hmmm, though it's still a bit early to be forming theories, I am very curious what awaits them in London. And more specifically, if it's everything Deinne is hoping for, or something else entirely. Ooo...

As for some highlights, reactions, and what stood out as I read:

If she ran, there would still be a chance that she would make it to the meeting with Master Andersen, which meant that was still a chance to seize the future. Or at least to have a decent cup of coffee. She wasn’t sure which of those was her priority anymore.

I absolutely love this dry sense of humor! It fits Deinne so well, and added a whole 'nother layer of enjoyment to the chapter!

Deinne didn’t like that it sounded like she was convincing herself.

She didn’t want it to sound like she was convincing herself.

That created the possibility that she needed to convince herself.

Which was nonsense. Absolute nonsense.

Ooo, this was really cool! Deinne sounds so firm and confident here, like she doesn't even like the thought of being uncertain in something, and I like how you separated the lines to really drive in the point!

although it was nice to see him after a long week, the meeting that awaited her was more important. This was about the future, after all. Their future. Maybe even world's future, because who [knew] what might they create with a proper budget.

[Very tiny typo I didn't catch before, with know instead of "knew/knows"]. Anyway, I really liked how this part raised the tension surrounding this Order of Mechanics and their impending decisions!

“What’s so great about an empty envelope?” Her famous eye-twitch was coming back.

“That there was something in it before!” Another overly wide smile spread across his face and he handed her two pieces of paper. Train tickets, she realised.
[/quote]

Okay, I had two separate reactions to this moment: the first was fascination by the reveal of the tickets, and immediately wondering about all the possibilities! The second was laughing at the delivery XD

Our Mad Thoughts...

Overall, that was an awesome chapter! I'm so curious where Deinne and Alexej will wind up from here...Nicely done! :D

Thus concludes my review. To leave off, here are some inspiring quotes, courtesy of your resident Poe freak ~

"They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night."
"Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.”
"I would define, in brief, the poetry of words as the rhythmical creation of Beauty."

Heya there, Raven! Thank you so much for leaving a review - I always love how detailed and helpful they are :D Thank you for bringing grammar errors and which parts felt choppy - translating to English is a nightmare, especially because I'm still far from being fluent, so I probably wouldn't notice this stuff myself!

I absolutely love this dry sense of humor! It fits Deinne so well, and added a whole 'nother layer of enjoyment to the chapter!

Oh yay, someone liked the coffee thing XD (No, but this is actually one of my favorite parts of this chapter :D - I love writing Deinne's slightly dry and sarcastic humor)
