This was me.

by Nike

This was me.

You'd expect that as a nineteen year old girl, on New Years' Eve, I would be out at a party, dancing. And that at midnight I'd have the most perfect kiss, fall in love. Amazing end to a year and perfect start to a new one.

But that wasn't me.

I was at home, writing on my laptop. Drinking tea, not champagne. My parents danced around, listening to whatever the local news station was showing for New Years' on the TV. My brother happened to be out at some party, lucky bastard. And I was not expecting a New Years' kiss. Nor an amazing party.

During the holidays, it made everyone twice as lonely. And I wasn't lonely. I had everyone I needed. But I did feel like I was missing something. Missing out on something.

It doesn't matter anyway. No guys liked me. No one even wanted to try to be with me. I was a girl, a pretty smart girl, that stayed at home with no life. So, of course I felt like I was missing out on something.

I felt so behind too. My brother had gotten someone and was happy. I always thought that as long as he didn't have anyone like me, I was okay. But now he does. And I was alone. The only nineteen year old virgin virgin. I was more of a virgin than Virgin Mary ever was! At least she had someone who loved her.

It's so depressing, isn't it?

It's not all about the sex. It's more about not having a boyfriend ever. I'll admit, I am not that unattracive. I can look at myself in the mirror and say, 'I'm alright' honestly. I may be sorta crazy in the head. I may have problems. But it's not like everyone sees that. Everyone has something off about them, so it's not entirely visible. I feel like I deserve a chance.

I don't see why I'm so...

Alone.

It's strange: I thought this only happened to high schoolers. But it makes more sense for people out of high school to feel lonely since there's not much else to think about unless you're in college or so it seems to me. Even then, it seems that people in college would worry about this more. It's easier to tell smeone to wait than it is to actually wait, in my opinion. This is a mystery all teenage girls experience. I don't think you need a boyfriend to be happy though ( easy for me to say, right) because there's other stuff out there. Like parties or something... perhaps you'll find 'im when you least expect it...? Agh, I'm bad at this, but that's usually what happens to people right? Especially the Disney princesses. Okay, so I envy them. Everyone loves them even though they do nothing that helps anyone but themselves, yet still they get the guys. I don't understand them, they're unbelievable! That's the reason why people think they need men to make them happy: because of those princesses! Ugh, its annoying, and not true. I'll stop here for m rant. Sorry being somewhat of a troll. This is a well written, relatable piece.

Hello, Nike!
Rachel here to review. :)

You've written a very relatable piece here. As a girl close to your age, I understand that whole "I'm getting old, why are all my friends and family already finding happiness?"
It's really hard.
My boyfriend and I broke up a couple weeks ago, so I understand that whole "feeling alone during the holidays" thing.
It's even harder.

You've really been able to tap into people's emotions with this piece. Using something so close and personal to you tends to pull on people's heartstrings.

I have a little nitpick on technicality here:

I felt so behind too. My brother had gotten someone and was happy. I always thought that as long as he didn't have anyone like me, I was okay. But now he does. And I was alone. The only nineteen year old virgin virgin.

You keep switching what tense you're writing in. First it's "he had gotten someone" then it's "but now he does." only to go to "and I was alone."
Also, you use "virgin" twice in the same sentence.

Great job on this, though! You really tapped into people's emotions with this one.
Keep writing!

Hey Nike,
Happy New Year!
You know what? I feel exactly the same way. All my friends have boyfriends and i am the only one who doesn't. It totally sucks. Especially when they speak of all this lovey- dovey stuff they did with their boyfriends, and all i can do i just fantasize. I always wish some guy would come up to me and ask me out. But that never happened. But you know what is the positive side of being single? You are free to do whatever you like. For example- I have this friend whose boyfriend is really possessive. He doesn't even allow her to talk to any other guys. And all my friends have some problem or the other with their relationship. They always say that i'm the lucky one since i don't have any guy to worry about. Yeah i know it sucks being single, but hey look at the positive side! And don't worry, you soul mate is right around the corner, waiting for that perfect time to come and meet you :)
