"The Outsiders" Poems

Hi reader! So my last lesson in my English class was to write a couple of poems about the novel we're reading in class- S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders" and I thought it'd be cool to show you which one's I wrote. Also, yes. I do realize I have slightly repetitive content in each one lol. Anyways, here they are:

Broken Men

He’s cold, hard, and serious
And even a bit mysterious
He’s got a hidden love
That’s risen to be quite above
Johnny’s heroic and brave death
Has got him doubting every single breath

Here lies a broken man,
That’s no longer part of his broken clan

Dally pounding on the walls, shaking…
His anguished cries absolutely quaking
He painfully robbed a grocery store
In vain of the death of a friend he adored

Expression of stone, heart of a crystal
His life ended by the will of a pistol
Who would’ve known, who would’ve thought
That his life was ended by that single shot?
Nobody would’ve known, nobody would’ve thought that he was gonna get shot
Now everybody’s stomach is tied in a painful, griefed knot
Falling down onto his knees
The entire world seems to freeze

A broken heart, a broken man
Is missed by each and every one of his broken clan

If it only weren’t for that stupid fire
That fueled Johnny’s strong desire
To be a hero
and quit his life as a guilty zero
His legacy is dedicated, written down in a book
the heart of a crystal, always a lover, and never a crook

He will be forever remembered in time
His life, like the gold of the sun, shimmers and shines
Though he never saw a sunset, Pony remembers
Each and every ray, like dim glowing embers

A broken family, two broken men
Rest peacefully in their lonely dens

The world is full of broken glass
So pick it up and make violence take a pass
They both had the courage, they all were brave
Hopefully, that was enough to kill the rage

It’s hard to believe it all started with that gleaming knife
On that horrible, horrible, horrible night
That ended a drunk, broken man’s life
The feeling of guilt- better said, the feeling of dread
Staring at him, the ground stained a deep crimson red

Broken hearts, broken families, and three broken men
All of them, now resting peacefully in their sad and lonely dens

The Innocent Puppy
Innocent puppy
Became not so lucky
Pulled out the blade in the moonlight
It gleamed brightly in the night
A guy with many rings
Johnny feeling stinged
The pale ground stained red
A story never said

Come Together
Stop with the violence
Let nobody’s stories be silenced
Quit with the rage
And let kindness come onto the stage
Our differences are what makes us unique
So stop with all the critiques
The world’s full of broken glass
So make anger take a pass

We’re all birds of a feather
And it’s time that we all come together

Nothing Gold Can Stay
Nothing gold can stay
But there’s always gonna be a way
Treasure what you’ve got
And practice love and compassion on the spot
And when it all fades out
Don’t you dare begin to pout
Remember all your memories
That you’ve collected over the centuries

Nothing gold can stay
But don’t let that take you away

Sodapop
Hippity hop
Sodapop!
Always happy and smiling
Never, ever riling
Always seeing the cup as half full
Won’t catch him talking bull
Hippity hop
Sodapop!

Commentary/explanations:

So each of these poems was based on a certain theme/character in the book Just so you know.

Broken Men: Okay so this was really the one poem that I put a ton of effort into and worked a ton to finish and it's gotta be one of my favorites and the one I was most satisfied with. The center of this poem would probably be a character named Dallas Winston (also known as Dally), who's never known to love anyone until the only person that he did love died (Johnny) after injuring himself in a fire trying to save some kids. Afterwards, in anger he robs a grocery store and uses a (not loaded) gun to scare away the police. He called his gang (which is basically the only family he's got) for some help but they were too late and the police had already shot him. Yeah... I know. It's tragedic. *sob* Rest in peace Dally and Johnny. LOL This poem is basically a summary of the main events that happened in the book.
Innocent Puppy: Okay so this poem is about Johnny. Prior to his death, he got jumped (attacked) by a stuck-up gang (The Socs) who's idea of fun was to beat up Greasers like Johnny. He was scarred for life after that attack and he carried a knife on him at all times. Anyways, continuing. Johnny became scared of his own shadow and was known as the child/innocent puppy of his gang. Until, he and a friend of his (Ponyboy) ran away because of issues at home. *Cue villain music* YUP. The (drunk, if I may add) Socs found them. One of them was drowning Pony in a fountain and was about to kill him. Johnny ended up pulling the blade and... killing one of them. Johnny's not so innocent anymore and this poem is an explanation of that.
Come Together: This poem is about one of the main themes in the novel - accepting each other's differences and violence. Uh... that's about it for my explanation for this one LOL.
Nothing Gold Can Stay: This poem is about uh... a poem. LOL So yes, I named it after Robert Frost's "Nothing Gold Can Stay" which is basically a poem about how nothing beautiful/valuable/good can last forever. This is my interpretation of that poem.
Sodapop: Okay, at this point I was kinda just messing around in English class and I wanted to make an easygoing poem about an easygoing guy. Sodapop is Ponyboy's brother (yeah I know... weird names) and he's known to be the happiest of the gang. The book describes him as rarely ever drinking since he got "drunk on just plain living" LOL. Anyways, thanks for reading!

I am soooo happy I got to read these. We just finished reading "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. It is such a good book! I loved how in almost every poem you mentioned which character you were writing it about. You did a great job on what Dally did after Johnny died.

"Dally pounding on the walls, shaking…
His anguished cries absolutely quaking
He painfully robbed a grocery store
In vain of the death of a friend he adored"

That you were able to convey a person robbing a grocery store and keep it rhyming throughout the poem is awesome.

You did a great job expressing what their personalities were like in their poems, especially Sodapop's.

"Hippity hop
Sodapop!
Always happy and smiling
Never, ever riling
Always seeing the cup as half full
Won’t catch him talking bull
Hippity hop
Sodapop!"

I am so happy you wrote this and you did a great job, can't wait to read what you write next.

Carpe diem,
LUNARGIRL

Thank you so much! (^_^)

Alright, this is flipping AMAZING. The amount of talent and hard work that went in to this. You perfectly expressed the broken family when Johnny passed away & how much it affected them. I seriously cannot put it into words how good this is. I'm around the same age as you and can't write half as good lol. Also, with the different poems (Especially Sodapop) I think you really expressed their personalities and different feelings about what happened so well. Over all, I could never write this good (Lol) so I don't really have much to say besides AWESOME! Keep up the absolute mad-lad work :)

Thank you so mucchhh :D
heh I'm not even supposed to have finished the book but I am a rebellious child xD

In the winter months, gale storms in Svalbard can reach wind speeds of 130 km/h. Accompanied by or following snowfall, such storms can reduce visibility dramatically, more so in the winter months of the polar night. During these storms, travel is not advised.
