I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
Yeah I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
I’ve played in the parks and been to the games -
But I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
I’ve never seen a fly ball tumble into the crowd,
Or a called strike three set him down -
Unnatural rapture, the fall of man,
If the babe can’t hit then none of us can.
I’ve never heard the bust of his big bat,
Or seen him take a bow as the nation cries.
I’ve never seen him cross his heart and tip his hat,
I’ve never seen the violence in his eyes -
I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
I’ve smelt the grass, and the mahogany wood,
I’ve hit all the baseballs that I could.
I’ve danced in the outfield, the sporty masquerade -
But I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
Yeah I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
Yeah I’ve taken a ford to the stadium,
Watched white lines disappear with the past -
But I’ve never heard the hum of the model t,
I’ve never seen Ford’s assembly line living.
I’ve had aches and pains down my back,
I’ve done God’s will in the nave of his house,
Fired guns at trees and played war games.
But I’ve never died for a Jew or a slave -
And I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
I’ve been all across the southland,
Ate dried meats out of rusting cans,
And walked tall among trees like the mountain men.
But I’ve never hunted buffalo on a plain.
No I’ve never seen a buffalo on the plain.
I’ve seen the flag swirl in the wind,
I’ve seen men die and come back again,
I’ve followed concrete roads to sin,
I’ve seen black fires and the throne of Satan –
But I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
Yeah I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
I’ve watched Fords speed and men go missing,
Heard bats break and white balls scream,
Seen Christians killing and Atheists praying.
I’ve never known any other team,
That has worn pinstripes in a fashion as lean;
I’ve never lived in any other days,
I’ve never known of any other ways -
But I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
Yeah I’ve lived my whole life and never seen the Babe.
I say I’m an American, but I’m not sure what it means,
To trace the crimson seams with my fingers,
Or smell worn leather in my dreams -
I’ve lived my whole life, or so it seems.
This is unusual. Good but unusual. I don't quite understand who the 'Babe' is. Would you mind explaining it to me because if you did I could appreciate it a lot more. One thing though is it suppose to be lyrical? because if it isn't then I would suggest taking out the repeating lines as it stops the flow a bit!
"the Babe" refers to babe ruth, the baseball player. Here i use him as a symbol for the true American spirit, or for americana (whatever you want to refer to it), that we are tought about in school, but we all know it doesn't exist any more.
I mispelled taught as "tought" SO STUPID AHHHHHH!!!!!!
right, i see that is why i don't understand, I'm not from America. It is good though and i understand what you wanted to say now! I guess in a way it could relate to any country. But is it a bad thing that the spirit has died out??? any way i like it so keep writing, you are good!
Yah, its definitely a bad thing that the spirit has died out...
