A Hunting Night

PreviousNext

Authors note: This is my first short story. I would love some harsh criticism. I want to improve my writing skills.

It was midnight and I waited in the corn field for my grandmother to arrive. I could see that there was a full moon tonight. I peered up at the night sky, searching for the Aries constellation. My mind was wondering, when I saw my grandmother out of the corner of my eye. She was walking quickly and looked calm but determined.

My arms reached for the gun my grandmother held out to me. My hands trembled and my knees shook. I had never had the experience of being on a hunt before, but I knew it was necessary. It was necessary for our survival or else we would all be murdered.

A deep, distant howl sent shivers straight to my bones, and the hair on the back of my neck stood on end. I had been told this night would be rough. This night would stick with me for the rest of my life, because it would be my first kill.

Since I was child, it was deeply ingrained into my mind, that this was the only way. That we could not live in peace, and that it was "become the predator or be the prey."

My mind was racing when we began pushing through the trees and stomping on the leaves in the woods. The chilly air of the night went straight through my jacket and my skin slowly started to get goosebumps.

My paranoia was no help, when I began to see shadows creeping through the trees. My grandmother held a finger to her lips, and held her gun steadily in her hands. A low growl rumbled through the woods, and I froze. My eyes widened, but my limiting senses did not allow me to see far.

The wind picked up and I could smell the stench of death that surrounded us. I shut my eyes to clear my head, when I heard a shot. The piercing howl that sounded after it echoed around me and my instincts took over. I pulled the trigger when a wolf lunged at us.

My shot blasted into it's chest and it fell to the ground as a man.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world),

Hi! I'm here to leave a quick review!!

First Impression: Well this was a really fun little story to read. Just a grandma and the child hunting werewolves in the night. You certainly capture that earlier anticipation quite well and the way that the whole thing is over in one quick shot proves just how much time they must've had to deal with this problem, which is also a nice touch.

Anyway let's get right to it,

It was midnight and I waited in the corn field for my grandmother to arrive. I could see that there was a full moon tonight. I peered up at the night sky, searching for the Aries constellation. My mind was wondering, when I saw my grandmother out of the corner of my eye. She was walking quickly and looked calm but determined.

Well that's a pretty interesting setting that you don't run into every day. Well...let's see where this little story is headed here. It looks like something quite interesting is about to happen judging by where this appears to be headed but let's see I suppose.

My arms reached for the gun my grandmother held out to me. My hands trembled and my knees shook. I had never had the experience of being on a hunt before, but I knew it was necessary. It was necessary for our survival or else we would all be murdered.

Oooh...now that certainly seems interesting...well...well..well

A deep, distant howl sent shivers straight to my bones, and the hair on the back of my neck stood on end. I had been told this night would be rough. This night would stick with me for the rest of my life, because it would be my first kill.

The tension leading up to this hunt is being built up really nicely here....I'm loving the atmosphere that you're creating so far. Its doing a wonderful job of setting the mood for the story.

Loving the slow buildup of tension here...this definitely feels like its building towards what could be quite an exciting climax here...let's see how this goes.

My paranoia was no help, when I began to see shadows creeping through the trees. My grandmother held a finger to her lips, and held her gun steadily in her hands. A low growl rumbled through the woods, and I froze. My eyes widened, but my limiting senses did not allow me to see far.

I am loving the tension here...just them getting ready to face the dangerous beasts coming for them...

Phew...that was a success I see...well quite an nice ending....just a casual bit of defence from some werewolves...well...this was fun to read.

Aaaaand that's it for this one.

Overall: Overall I think this is a pretty neatly done story here. You've definitely captured the essentials here quite well and it was quite a nice read too. Aaand that's about all I gotta say for this one.

As always remember to take what you think was helpful and forget the rest.

Hi :)

So first off, I really liked this. I think you did a really great job writing it, especially for it being your first short story.
I'd suggest a little embellishment, though, to make the narrative richer, and to make the story come to life a little more. Describe your surroundings. And like someone else said, I would change the opening sentence. You could even change it so it read : "(I could see) it was a full moon tonight" and then go on from there. Reading it that way would grab your reader's attention.

You have a lot of opportunity to write in some suspense and really, really play on it and drag us into the story, and after reading over this a couple times I feel like if you just kept going with some of your descriptions it would really set the story off. Here's an example of what I'm trying to say:

"The wind picked up and the stench of death burned in my nostrils. Adrenaline rushed through me. I shut my eyes, trying to clear my suddenly foggy head. My stomach churned, my heart pounded in my chest like a bird trapped in a cage, and I trembled, not with cold, but with anticipation. A gunshot rang out. The piercing howl that sounded after it echoed around me, through my being, even, and my instincts took over."

i want to feel like I'm the person in the story, like I'm about to bring down a werewolf for the very first time. There's fear and excitement, and anticipation.

Also " my shot blasted into it's chest" "it's" should be just "its" ;)

I think that's all I have to say :)

Thanks for the help! I completely agree with you. I need to work on that kind of thing and how to add more details. :)

Overall your piece well written and I can get a hint of its true voice. Don't take what I'm about to say to harshly. There are a couple of critiques that could make this, and other things you do better. First off I would replace "limiting" in the third to last paragraph to "limited". Changing the ending of the word to "ed" makes the story flow a bit smoother and makes it easier to read. The second thing is that I would add more details or imagery to it. For instance; What does the grandmother look like? How big are the trees? How dense is that forest? How big is the wolf? What does the wolf look like? What does the man look like? That being said be careful not to add too much detail. One needs to learn how much is too much, and how much is just perfect to paint the picture in your head in others' as well. The final thing is to add more back story and explain a couple of things. Like, Does the main character know the man? How old is the main character? Did they know the wolf was going to change into a man? What brought about the whole "Hunt or be hunted" motto that these people have adopted? Is this a werewolf story or just an unfortunate happenstance? Please don't be discouraged. You show great promise as a writer. I greatly enjoyed reading your story. I hope to see more from you in the future! :-)

Thanks. I get what you mean about adding details. I guess I need to find that balance. I did not want to add too much, but I did end up with barely anything. I really appreciate it.
And this may be a stupid questions, but can you edit a story after it has been published? I am not sure how everything works on here.

Honestly? I don't know how to. Sorry I can't be of help in that regard, but I'm glad I ended up helping you with your story.

there should be a little button under the 'Tools' title that says 'edit work' or something like that. For me this button is on the right side of the story for mine, then again, I am on a laptop so it might be diff compared to a phone or such. Lovely story btw :D

This was really great. :D A little short, but great. I would suggest though, rewording the first sentence. It seems very awkward to me and doesn't sound the same as the rest of your sentences, which are very good. You have great description and you express your main character's emotions beautifully.

I didn't find any mistakes, which is really great, and I have to say that I love the way you said that last sentence. I don't know why, but it just sounded so perfect and it sent chills down my back.

I really like your writing style and I look forward to reading something else of yours. :D

Bye for now!
