The Coterie... (Short prologue)

Hey all! I started kicking around the idea of using the 'Seven Churches' (Read the book Revelation in the bible), as an interesting novel. I started working with the names of the churches and what each of them represent. So far I've only come up with this... Who knows if I'll ever even continue writing this or not. It has a definite fantasy feel, but minus the elves.

Lightning struck throughout the dark, night sky. Thunder bellowed across the earth. A cold and howling wind whispered through the mountain side.

Tears began to spill from Smyrna’s eyes and fall to the collar attached to the cloak that engulfed her small frail body. She felt soft quakes that plagued the cold rock floor beneath her feet. The pulse made her draw her wings closer to her body. As she looked out from the watchtower, a rock formed in the pit of her stomach. She gripped the clod brick wall as she felt her knees fail her.

The storm rotated like a hurricane, except this type of storm was supernatural, everlasting, frightful.

“Lucian has started,” she muttered to the young man standing next to her. Dim light from the fire only showed mere shadows of his presence.

“Should we go alert the others?” his voice cracked in fear as a lightning bolt crashed into the side of a mountain. Sending rock and ash flying.

Smyrna broke her stare to face him. His brown eyes showed fear, so much worry hid behind them.

The wind increased speed and Smyrna had to pull her wings even tighter to her body, in fear she would be carried away.

“Run, go alert the troops!” she shouted to him, though he was already running down the steps of the watchtower. She choked back tears as she listened to his footfalls fade into the thunder. A pang of sadness struck her heart.

She looked back out into the vast world before her. Oh how things had changed in the course of eight months. She wished Lucian never existed, that her brother Pergamum never left her and rebelled against the Coterie. She said a silent prayer to Yeshu, that he would keep her brother safe. It had only been three weeks since his betrayal, though it felt like a lifetime.

The wind began to ease up and Smyrna pulled the hood from her face. Her long black hair slowly moved with the calming wind. She relaxed her wings and felt the gusts of wind flow through her feathers. Her heart ached for her brother, for all of Erihill. If she ever needed Yeshu’s guidance, it was now. She had endured the persecutions, sought after every member of the Coterie, and formed the group of seven. At the young age of seventeen, she had lived a long, strenuous and painful life.

“Yeshu, be with us all,” she whispered. She leaped from the watchtower’s ledge. Her mind reeled and her muscles tensed as she fell towards the earth. Just before her body and the ground made impact, she fluttered her wings and began to fly towards the military keep.

“This is going to be a long, bloody war,” she grumbled in a slight irritable tone.

Hey LPR, Stella here!

I. NITPICKS

Lightning struck throughout the dark, night sky.

Yes, night sky is generally dark.

Tears began to spill from Smyrna’s eyes and fall to the collar attached to the cloak that engulfed her small frail body.

Because tears fall straight from your eyes onto your clothes.

She gripped the clod brick wall as she felt her knees fail her.

clod brick?

his voice cracked in fear as a lightning bolt crashed into the side of a mountain. Sending rock and ash flying.

Why the full stop after mountain?

Alright.

II. OVERALL

Firstly- you begin with a comment on the weather. Which isn't extremely encouraging. The rest of your prologue is full of names that we don't know. I'm guessing Lucian is Lucifer and Yeshu is God, but I've never read Revelations and I doubt most people have. I'm not so sure it's a good way to start off a story, by throwing us into utter confusion. Look at this and decide what the purpose of it is, then make it fulfill that purpose.

Hope I helped, drop me a note if you need anything!

Tears began tospilled from Smyrna’s eyes and fallfell to the collar attached to the cloak that engulfed her small frail body this sentence has no punctuation whatsoever, excluding the period at the end. Smyrna broke her stare to face him. His brown eyes showedbetrayed fear, so much worry hid behind them. The "so much worry behind them" part doesn't seem to fit well. How about: "His brown eyes betrayed fear and worry."
The wind increased speed and Smyrna had to pull her wings even tighter to her body, in fearpanic she would be carried away.Too much "fear" going on here :P

I'm looking forward to reading more of your story here. It's very intriguing and interesting, though I know nothing whatsoever of your inspiration.

You have a few errors in places, like repetitively writing the word "fear" and I think you can work on description in certain areas. A thesaurus always comes in handy (in Microsoft Word, online or the old-fashioned version: a book) and I carry 2 at my desk in addition to using Word and online.

Overall, very nice piece.

Phoenix lands for a review

She felt soft quakes that plagued the cold rock floor beneath her feet.

This sounds awkward I suggest replacing the plagued.

The pulse made her draw her wings closer to her body. As she looked out from the watchtower, w rock formed in the pit of her stomach.

a I would assume

The storm churned like a hurricane, except a hurricane would gradually get severe. This type of storm was supernatural.

I don't get this at all. What makes this storm supernatural and I don't think you need to mention the hurricane getting severe. Mainly because once a hurricane hits land it slowly gets weaker.

Sending rock and ash flying.

I'd say not needed

Smyrna broke her stare to face him. His brown eyes shown fear, so much worry hid behind them.

showed

She choked back tears as she listened to his footfalls fade into the thunder.

Why is she crying?

“This is going to be a long, bloody war,” she grumbled.

Word choice. Grumbled indicated mild annoyance. Like she had to take the trash out and it was mildly inconvenient for her. Based off of the rest of the piece I'd say that wasn't the goal.

Anyway very interesting concept, and it seems to have the potential of being a very unique story. I don't really see how this is a prologue. I'd say it's more like a first chapter. Because if the story continues with the same people only moments later I really don't see the point of labeling this prologue.

Overall good job. I liked it and can see a lot of potential in it.

Phoenix flies away.
