-Chapter Two-

  “It could be worse.”

I looked at my mother with a harsh glare, before turning my head away.

This whole week I’ve been ignoring her.

I curled my legs up onto the couch, propping my chin on my hand, ignoring the loud TV in front of me.

Suddenly a sharp knock at the door sounded through the room, taking both my mom and I by surprise.

She got up nervously, opening it slightly.

I couldn’t hear or see who my mother was talking to, but when she opened it, I sighed.

A young lady walked through the door, her high heels adding inches to her height.

She held a ring binder on her arm, her brown hair pulled up into a bun.

She looked incredibly superior, making me fix my black curls before standing.

“River Wolff, my name is Courtney, I’m here to congratulate you,” She said coldly, glancing over my figure.

  Dread spilled over me.

“For some reason, your tests came back perfect, you hold no diseases, so I’m here to withold the next test.” She said, walking swiftly past me before sitting down on the sofa, crossing her legs like a real lady.

Sighing I sat next to Courtney, clamping my hands on my lap.

“This is to assess your suitability for the pack.” She said, opening her purple ring binder.

“Well I don’t want to be in it, is that suitable enough for you?” I growled, making Courtney sigh and shake her head.

“Anyway, I’m just going to ask a few questions that you must answer honestly.” She said, I rolled my eyes with a nod.

“Do you play any sports, or participate in any physical activities?” She asked, pulling a pen from her breast pocket.

“I swim and run often,” I said, looking at my nails, pretending to be fascinated by them.

She scribbled her answer onto some paper within the binder.

“What is your favorite subject in school?”

  “Probably English, maybe PE.”

“What is your favorite past time?”

  “You mean hobby?”

  “Yes.”

  “Reading, and I love swimming.”

“Do you have any relationship within the rogue village?”

  “What? That’s personal.”

  “Please answer River.”

  I sighed.

“No, but my boyfriend got into the Nightmare Pack last year.”

  She scribbled furiously.

  “Have you any allergies?”

  “Just hay fever.”

  “Do you snore?”

  “Wait what?”

  “Do you snore?”

“What kind of question is that?”

  “A question, please answer.”

  “No I don’t, why?”

“Accommodation reasons, I think that’s it, thank you for your cooperation Miss. Wolff.”

I looked up at her in disbelief, a little surprised that was all that was needed.

After saying a curt goodbye, and wishing me good luck rather viciously, Courtney left.

The woman’s cheerful buzz radiated around the lounge, her smile slightly fuzzy through my morning   gaze. Clipboard in hand, pen in the other she looked too ecstatic with the situation, like waking me up at four AM was a pleasant pastime.

Rubbing my eyes for the third time, I regarded the female and her grim looking assistant, who’s manly shoulders didn’t suit the woman. Yes, woman.

  “Well this is great news!”

The striking of hands on my mothers part shocked me out of drowsiness, and into the sad reality of life.

I had missed out on a fair amount of my mother, and the random woman pairs conversation due to the onset of depression that comes with grim news.

I knew, from the second the clean cut woman in white, and her gruesome assistant walked through the door. I had gotten into the 30 Day Trial.

“A celebration is sure to be in order, but I’m afraid River must come with us, the bus is waiting for you.” The woman in white said, her bipolar sentence causing me to sniff my blocked nose back into reality.

“What is this, the Polar Express? You expect me to board a bus at this time?” I didn’t realize my thoughts had been uttered until my mother swatted my arm.

“If you could sign here,” The woman, known as Hilda ignored her, sliding her clipboard and pen across the coffee table. I glared at it.

Okay, so maybe I decided that seeing my boyfriend that lived in the pack wasn’t so bad. And surely leaving my pathetic mother I despised a lot now wouldn’t be totally torture. Especially since I had nothing to leave behind.

Picking up the pen, I signed and practically threw the paper back at Hilda’s face.

“Perfect, now to board the bus!” Hilda’s face had broken into a mighty grin now that I had finally signed. She had been here for awhile, trying to convince me.

The goodbye to my family was short and sharp. With a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek I was shoved from the home with a bulging bag and a damaged pride.

To be honest, I wasn’t happy to be locked on a bus with chatty girls whose conversations wouldn’t advert from the topic of the Alphas.

I had found a seat by myself, behind two girls whose voices were high and squeaky. Luckily, this wasn’t the only bus, and five other buses were picking up the other 49 girls up.

“So Jenny heard from Kara, that the Alpha King might be looking for his queen!” One of the girls in front of me squealed to her friend. Both were bouncing in their seat at the news.

  I couldn’t help but snort.

I had settled against the bus window, watching each stop we made, and evaluating each of my opponents.

Soon, they stopped in the rich neighborhood, and a girl carrying two over stuffed bags, with Hilda and her assistant carrying two more bounded on the bus.

She had a full mop of wavy blonde hair, with a perfectly flawless complexion. Her eyes were a blazing blue that observed the bus with pure excitement.

She bounded over, and unfortunately, sat right next to me, her scent of vanilla washing over poor me.

“Howdy, I’m Caitlin, everyone calls me Cait.” God she was quick. I observed this girl curiously. Was she really that friendly, or was it a game plan of some sort?

  “River.”

“Oh cool! Like a lake, or a large body of water?”

  “Nope.”

“Aww, well I love being near water, it’s such a calming serene. What’s yours?”

  “Don’t really have one.”

“No, girl how can you not have one?”

I rolled my eyes, giving up on the conversation, and being moderately nice. Choosing favorite element was like choosing your favorite child, and I wasn’t into making rash decisions.

I was content listening to Cait babble, while she concealed herself under a curtain of her blonde hair.

Suddenly Five Seconds of Summer rang out around the bus, and it took me a few moments to realize it was my ringtone. Ugh, I wished I had never brought my phone.

“Yes,” I gritted out into the receiver, many of the girls turning to stare at me by now. I glared at them each in return; I was a sassy lassy when I hadn’t slept well.

“Hey babe, heard about you getting in.” I sighed in relief, slumping back into the bus seat at the sound of my boyfriend’s voice. I had to admit it was hard having an over the phone relationship.

“Yeah, I’m heading to the base now,” I informed Cooper. Cooper and I had been together for almost a year now.

“Cool, I’m about to head out to training, just thought I’d check on my baby.” I melted at his simple, yet sweet words. I wasn’t aware blue eyes were burning into my skull till she turned to see Cait smiling goofily at her.

“You should really go out now, I promise I’ll call tonight,” I said softly, unable to keep the smile off my face. Even across my phone, I could imagine him running his long fingers through his silky blonde hair.

  Argh, dreamboat.

“Sounds good, see you later then babe, love yah.” And he was gone, before I could even utter I love you back. I shoved the phone back into the pocket of my crumpled jeans I threw on this morning due to no time whatsoever.

I brushed my hair back, and glanced at Cait, who still smiled at her, straight teeth gleaming and winking like stars.

“Who was it?” She asked, giving me a nudge suggestively. I flicked black tendrils away from my eyes.

  “No one.”

“Oh spill woman, I can see that blush.”

I covered my flaming cheeks with my cold hands.

“Ssh, haven’t you ever been in a relationship?”

“Yes, but we broke up, I’m looking for an Alpha!” Cait seemed so cheerful about that; so much I almost choked on spit.

“Right, okay.” I muttered, blinking watery tears. Cait seemed slightly hurt.

“I know it sounds ridiculous, but I think I’ve got what it takes.” Cait admitted.

“Read them out again will yah.”

I rolled my eyes and stared at the small print. Rules rules rules, I hated them.

“What’s the magic word?” I asked in a fake, pleasant voice. I turned around to my new roommate flopped on the bed flipping through a magazine.

Lucky for me, sarcasm noted,Cat had been assigned as my roommate. I had gotten off the bus and was welcomed by some official lady, who gave us schedules, and rooms.

The rules were supposed to be read in their own time. A huge poster was set up in our room, along with two wardrobes and beds.

“Isn’t this going to be fun, apparently the King is going to be teaching us defensive and offensive skills!” Cait said from behind me, sounding like a little kid in a candy store.

“Sure, if you consider torture fun,” I mumbled, squinting to read the rules. Cait hadn’t heard me.

“Go on, I’m waiting for the rules, which hopefully involve some hot Alpha.” I couldn’t help but snicker.

“Everyone will train in five different periods, each swapping with their main group which will be sorted on day one. You will cover five stations, the Alphas being your teachers-”

“Oh exciting!” I was cut off by Cait, but quickly resumed.

“At the end of the week, a meeting will be held, and the Alpha King will eliminate three girls and three boys. Weekends you will have off to do whatever you like. No relationships with the boys inside the 30 Day Trial arena will be allowed, and no relationships with the Alphas will be allowed whatsoever-”

“That won’t stop me!” I glared at Cait to shut up.

“Everyone must be in their rooms by 9:00, and everyone must be awake by 7:00 on weekdays. Weekend times for curfew will be extended. Anyone who disobeys the main rules will be punished by the Alpha King.” I stepped back from the wall, looking back to find Cait grinning like a maniac.

“The Alpha King will punish us!”

“Oh shut your dirty mouth, I’ll be keeping my distance from the guy,” I said honestly. The rest of the rules were basic, mandatory things.

It was past 9:00, and Cait was already getting ready for bed. But I had the uncomfortable urge to pee.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Cait asked, as I opened our room door.

  “Toilet, I’ll be back soon.”

With that I had slipped from the door. The rooms over looked like a massive field, a whole story below them. But the view was great. The classrooms were below the rooms.

The boys rooms were on the other side.

The sun had set, leaving the moon to be my guide. Many rooms flanked mine, the muffled sounds of chatter coming from under the doors.

Now to find the darn toilet in this joint.

I went to turn, but came face-to-face with a very, warm chest.

Stumbling back, I looked up, about to blow my top at whoever had ran into me. And worst, I knew it was a man because his chest was very hard and broad.

My words were lodged in my throat, as I stared up at the man in front of me.

He towered well over me, his stature strong and muscular. His button up shirt clung to every bulging muscle, as did his jeans.

Eyes, swirling silver, and totally enchanting eyes watched me, a mix of surprise and anger buried within. His golden tan skin contrasted to ihs ruffled black hair.

I tried to hunt for every feature on him, but it was impossible in just the light of the moon.

“You shouldn’t be out at this time,” The man growled. His voice was powerful and demanding, yet soft and silken like a caress to the skin.

“Neither should you,” I sassed. He had snapped me out of my daze. I had ruled him out from being an Alpha, even though he had the body to be one. Only because the Alphas weren’t due till tomorrow.

He was obviously one of the boys looking for trouble.

His eyes darkened.

“What makes you think you can use that tone with me?”

My eyes widened. Who does this cocky bastard think he is?

“I can use whatever tone I wish. How about you go back to your room, and I go find the toilet?”

And with that, I sauntered off.

Hi, I’m Thundahguy, and I’m here for a last minute review day review. Here it is:

So, your last chapter was a lot blander, I’ll admit. This one is filled with a lot more personality, though. I like it. There’s a lot more description in here than before as well. It’s a lot easier for me to read.

The characters look good. River is seeming like a stereotypical teenager, which, sure, she is, but it doesn’t really grab my attention as well. Her actions seem predictable too. Her motivation isn’t really there, either. Then again, I don’t really relate to her, so it’s fair enough. Caitlin seems bubbly, and honestly, I like her a lot more. She just oozes a bit more personality. Her and River’s chemistry works well. Cooper seems generic, but then again, we’ve only seen one side of him, so I’ll just have to wait and see before giving a proper analysis.

The only major problem I have is how this is starting to drift away from a Trials and Tribulations story. I know, it’s only the second chapter, but it's starting to get more of a light-hearted feel. I’m not saying that’s bad, but it does take away that intrigue that I had from chapter 1.

Anyways, that’s my review. I’m enjoying this, so far, but it is starting to wear on me. Have a happy review day.

Sillia here! Noticed this in the green room so i decided to give you a review :) I normally review while I read so if something seems slightly off or if i correct myself later thats why xD Anyway onto the review!!

Obviously I'm jumping into the story a chapter late and I'll probably go back and read the first chapter :)

Suddenly a sharp knock at the door sounded through the room, taking both my mom and I by surprise

To me this sentence seems kinda rushed and very...I'm not sure how to describe it but tense? Personally I'd reword it to say.....

A sharp knock at the door startled us both.

Or something along those lines.

“For some reason, your tests came back perfect, you hold no diseases, so I’m here to withold the next test.”

withhold isn't the correct word for this. Because if she was withholding the test then she would not be administering it.

“I swim and run often,” I said, looking at my nails, pretending to be fascinated by them.

I like this sentence because of the description that you put into it the only thing I can really say is to reword it a little bit like that she was fascinated by her nails just taking the word pretending out to make it a little more solid.

With a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek I was shoved from the home with a bulging bag and a damaged pride.

Only recommendation I have for this is to take out "a" in a damaged pride haha. This story is really interesting so far. I was kind of surprised by how the first part started out with little to no imagery and how it transferred so quickly to a world full of descriptions. Thats one of the recommendations that I have maybe, to make that transition smoother. I was really amused by the banter between River and Cait though; especially when talking about her name. I am very interested in how this story progresses and I can't wait to see the rest!!

Best and keep writing!
