Father Fantome sat in the front pew of the church, noticing how quickly it was filling up. No one noticed him, which had been the norm for nearly 300 years and though the trans-Atlantic travel hadn’t been great, Florida was a much better haunting ground.
There were always all sorts of reapers lurking around during the services, just waiting for one of these little buzzards to slip away after their heart failed them. Sad that there were so many deaths but he really liked to have friends, and might have been guilty of scaring little old ladies to death in the lavatory.
Lily floated down from one of the corners with a flower in
her hair, keeping her eyes on a short guy with gray hair in one of the
corners. Fantome noted that he was
wearing some sort of medical alert bracelet and had several stacked metal
identification necklaces.
“So, is that your new target?”
“Now Fan, why would you even have to ask a silly thing like that?”
“I could have complimented the flower in your hair, but I don’t like to mix
business with pleasure.”
“Well of course he’s my new target, silly goose. Frank McMillan is one mass away from going
out and dying on the church steps.”
Fan took another look at the man, who was swaying back and forth in a way that he had previously accredited to the holy spirit. A white form started to slip out from behind the parishioner and look down on the body.
“Uh Lily?”
He turned to his companion only to see her out in the parking lot, lurking over
a golf cart and staring at a cat. Fan
didn’t know anything about collecting souls.
He just knew that they needed to be collected and that he certainly did
not have the right certifications for that.
Lily was still haunting the cat in the parking lot, so he made the
decision to capture the soul, this was his haunting territory after all.
“Pardon me but are you Frank McMillian?”
“What has happened to me?”
He rolled a few lines around in his head before deciding on the most blatant
answer.
“You’re dead.”
The spirit of Frank starting shrieking and thrashing about, a sound loud enough
to pierce through the veil and cause the parishioners to look up to the
ceiling. Fan was not prepared for
this. He tried to go after Frank but the
spirit just dove head first into the ceiling fan, and the splintering soul was
soon spread everywhere.
“Oh my god.”
Lily popped back in with a ghost cat, which on a normal day Fan would
criticize, because she just kept collecting the spirits of cats. She was a crazy cat lady reaper.
But right now, he was dealing with a crazy reaper and a newly undead feline scratching at him because he had lost “the soul that was putting that nice bread from Publix, on the table this week.”
“Hey, easy, Sister.”
“That was a lot of lives ago. All that
matters now is that you sent Frank to Hell.”
“Are you completely sure that he wasn’t going there already? I mean, when was the last time you really saw
Frank in confession? I know I haven’t
seen him within the last six months.”
“They never send me cases with any sin attached, I guess I seem too
straight-laced to the people upstairs.”
“I wouldn’t use you and straight in the same sentence.”
“Well, I certainly don’t think anyone has associated you and ‘straight’
together, now or however many centuries ago.”
“That’s fair.”
The rapid ghost cat had settled down from scratching Fan’s
face off, and now sat on Lily’s lap, as the two continued to bicker about. It continued for a bit through a series of
glares and questioning glances towards Frank’s limp body, which they were
keeping alive on a prayer. Lily sighed
and matter-a-factly said, “You know, we need to replace his soul now.”
"We can't just take someone else’s soul."
"Fan, why do you choose this second to act innocent?"
"Because I'm a ghost."
"I thought you would have used the 'I was a priest three centuries ago'
line, again."
"I like to change it up. Where are you gonna get a soul anyways,
'Soul-Mart'?"
Lily produced a small red binder, and flipped to the 'S' tab.
"It's actually called 'Souls-Are-Us'."
“Shouldn’t it be “Souls-R-Us’?”
“If you sold millions of dollars worth of souls every year on a basically black
market, would you really want to be associated with a semi-defunct toy store?”
“I mean, I guess not.”
“Exactly. Now give me your car keys. Communion starts in about 45 minutes, so we
have 30 minutes to get a soul and get back.”
They walked out back to Fan’s ‘car’, which was a horse drawn hearse, that was perhaps older than the ghost himself. The horses were a ghastly skeletal sight to the average human being, that is if the average human being ever had the chance to see them, which very rarely happened. Lily, still carrying the ghost cat, walked up to the horses and producing a bag of treats from her pocket.
“Lily, please don’t feed them.”
“Oh, are you afraid they’re going to get fat?
They’re all bones and no skin anyways.”
Fan did his usual sigh while attaching the harnesses, and double and triple checking to make sure the leather wouldn’t slip off their rather slim figures.
“Now, where’s this store?”
“It’s in Parrish.”
“Friar. Do you know how fast I must
drive to get there and get back?”
“Neck breaking speed? Good thing you don’t
have one.”
This cued another sigh, as they sped off to the market.
The 20 mile trip was over in about 2 minutes. And even though he shouldn’t have been feeling dizzy after all this time of traveling at such speeds, Fan was always dizzy when he got out of the carriage.
“Grow a backbone, bud.
Oh right, you can’t.”
“One of these days, Lily, one of these days.”
“We can’t be acting like an old married couple all the time. I think we spend too much time with the
citizens of Sun City Center.”
Fan and Lily then walked as casually as possible, as someone
can manage while trying to replace the soul in a body barely hanging around,
into the store called Souls-Are-Us.
Fan ran for a cart, Lily grabbed an ad and the ghost cat whined and scratched
at the leather out in Fan's car.
"Oh look Fan, that nice brand of souls, are on sale for buy one get one
free."
"Lovely. Maybe they have cheese puffs on sale too."

Hello, LadyBird! I hope my review can do your work justice.
One chapter in, and I already love this novel.
I have a soft spot for ghosts and grim reapers that don't follow the usual tropes, and this story looks like it'll be my cup of tea. The dialogue between Father Fantome and Lily made me want to laugh; the two are obviously close, and you did a wonderful job at showing that. I love the little references to past escapades the two have been on, but my favorite of them all has to be when they started to joking about their sexualities. My old friend group were all queer and the majority of the people I'm close with online are too, and jokes about being queer run rampant. It's a nice way to keep things realistic (for a story about a crazy cat lady reaper and a ghost priest, that is) while also quickly establishing that neither one is straight.
I admit that the beginning of the story was a bit jarring because I had so little knowledge about the characters and the plot itself, but, as the chapter went on, I finally got a good handle on it. I don't think that's a flaw - at least, in my eyes it isn't. It almost reminds me of some of the animes I used to watch when I was younger. An initially unexplained incident is the start of the show, and then, as the first episode progresses, the story becomes clearer. I'm not sure if that's what you want your stories to be like but it's a type of storytelling that I deeply enjoy.
I really enjoyed reading your work. While there may have been a few rough spots, it's overall a wonderful piece of writing. If you feel like some parts of my review need further explanation or just aren't good enough, please let me know. I'd gladly clear up anything about this review.
Keep up the great work (which I doubt you'll have trouble with) and good luck on your writing endeavors!
This story has a really good plot and I am hoping that you will write more of it. There were a few things that were a bit off to me. I found myself not really knowing what was going on and one thing that could help is if you made it a little bit more descriptive. Another thing is I didn't know who was speaking, and often got confused in their conversations. Could you add in who is saying what? An example would be, "Lily, please don't feed them," pleaded Fan. “Oh, are you afraid they’re going to get fat? They’re all bones and no skin anyways,” reassured Lily. I'm sorry if this was a bit negative, but it is an excellent story!
Omg hi @Ladybird!

This was a delight to read over brunch to be honest. I liked the quippy dialogue, that "old married couple" friendship vibe that they've got going on. It's a really interesting concept and a lot of fun! I actually laughed out loud at a couple of points.
I think my main point of critique would be don't be afraid to develop things a little more, to use description a bit more to do your work. Like when he reflects that Lily is a "crazy cat lady reaper" - I know that this is part of your concept but you didn't necessarily have to say it outright in Scene 1? It felt too on the nose. Similarly with Frank dying, I felt maybe you didn't quite give yourself enough time before lapsing back into dialogue. I think it'd be worth using a bit more description, setting the scene a bit more, working more a bit on prose outside of dialogue. Which I, myself, am terrible at doing. But it gives you a little more weight to your story and even though it's fun, that's never a bad thing! I just got the impression that maybe you were rushing a little, or afraid that we'd get bored - don't. Use your words, let the story expand a bit more with description and depth and we'll figure out that she's a crazy cat lady reaper by ourselves.
This really reminded me of Terry Pratchett - PLEASE tell me you've read something by him! If not, you need to do so, immediately, because I think what I'm ineloquently trying to explain is his prose - light, fun, doesn't take itself too seriously and yet is clever and confident and takes his time even when you don't expect it.
Will you ping me again for part 2?
Stella xx
I have a thing where I don't like to mix dialogue and description to much, because it reminds me of a lot of novels I read in middle school that were just /no/.
And as I said to Blue last night when trying to come up with a clean description, this is like #catholicmemes as a novel. So that might be why some parts are just light and stupid.
Have not read Pratchett but he's been recommended a few times.
Totally will ping.
Btw Here's the link to the answer to all those burning questions Blue asked: https://ladylizzlovelace.writerfeedpad.com/106
To be clear, I have no issue with the light bits and certainly don't think they're stupid! I love the idea of it being #catholicmemes as a novel! XD
So I probably have nothing useful to say and this will be all rambly, but I just wrote up that thing on my wall on sticky notes and then typed it and now I have even less brainpower for anything else.
My first comment has to be on the fact that, as much as I enjoy From State to State, this is so far a lot easier to follow along with. I mean, it's only one scene so far. But I know what's going on, so that's good.
I do have a question about the trip to Souls-Are-Us (I loved the jibe at Toys-R-Us, btdubs)(we still have their gift cards for sale at the store and every time I see them I'm like "isn't someone going to come pick these up and give us credit, bc we clearly can't sell them now). So the old man dies, and Father Fantome accidentally scares his soul right up into a ceiling fan, where it gets shredded and then apparently sent off to hell.
Do they need to get a new soul for the body so he's not still dead at the end of Mass, thus freaking out the parishioners? Or will they get in trouble for not reaping the soul properly, if they don't go grab a replacement?
Love love love queer nun and queer priest. He's a Jesuit, isn't he. Not that all Jesuits are queer, or any of them that I know of, bc obviously as priests that's never going to come up. But I just feel like a Jesuit would be the most likely to be open about it and also just to act the way Fan does so far. And they are an old enough order for someone three centuries old to have been one in life.
Also I'm just assuming they're Catholic bc I always like a chance to cheer for the home team.
If there's a brand of souls, does someone manufacture them?
(Okay, God, obviously. But this is sort of a black market. So...someone else? Is there a soul factory? How are the souls transported? Is there *wiggles eyebrows* a soul train?)
I don't quite understand the end of this line, except that I know what Publix is bc that's where we shop whenever the family goes to Florida on vacation. Like was the now-dead-and-gone old man the cat's owner? I guess I just don't get the tie-in between the cat scratching Fan and the soul he lost. Unless we're talking about another soul entirely.
Okay, this pointless review is over. Keep it coming, man. I'm having fun.
even though I should be encouraging you to work on StS, probablyi typed up a long thing and yws glitched so i'll try and type it down in discord
