Upon A Drowning Man

by Krupp

The salt hits my lips, tasting bitter on my tongue
My eyes burn as I leave them open
Welcoming your touch as I tread amidst the waves
Taking mouthfuls in as I try to drown slowly in your grace
The salt is but a reminder of who you Are
And what I can never be
For it goes without saying that what isn’t already ash will become it
As this world slowly burns away
My only safety is the ocean, this terrifying darkness
How little I have known you, and yet how awesome your power is
I know this moment won’t last forever
Because I’m already dying
And the waves slowly deposit me onto the shore
The sand feeling like fire on my skin
I have been here too many times
And I want nothing more
Than to dive deep back into you
You who gives me the pain of life
And takes it away when I need your love
At my worst you come and yank me out
Your undertow far greater than any other
But I am now back on the shore – where I started and will always finish
And you’re now where you’ve always been
Waiting for me to come again
And as wonderful as it is to see your waves crash down towards me
Trying to bring me back
I find myself dragged away by men in red
Screaming and moaning in despair
They do not understand you
And I suppose I don’t either
But I can attest to your dedication
And you won’t find a more willing man
Who wants to escape to meet you
So what can I do
When I am dragged away from your watery depths
Constantly, by forces unforeseen that are terrified
Having no clue what you are really about
It’s not about me getting myself drowned
It’s about me losing myself in you
And in You I wish to swallow your depths
Till I choke on you, and I thirst no more
Take me under, great ocean, take me
And let me never return to shore
