Chapter One - A Frosty Winter
Snow crunches underfoot as I walk alongside my older brother, wearing nothing but a light hoodie and worn out jeans with thick wool gloves. We moved at a brisk pace down the frosty sidewalk as fresh snow floated around us. His dark hair collected the fine white powder, creating an interesting contrast that made me giggle as I jumped up to brush it off. He smiles down at me, a crooked grin that, like a contagious disease, made me smile as well. We turned around the block, heading into a large expanse of field that was being flattened to build more houses. Piles of rock and dirt were piled everywhere, frozen over from the snow and hail. Walking over to them, he takes a seat on a frost covered cinder block and watches as I prance around in the snow.
“Brother! Join me!” I cry out, motioning for him to join me. He shakes his head, flurries of snow falling from his hair.
“Alright, alright. Be careful; the ice is slippery today. Remember what happened last week?”
“But I’m all better now! See? My scratches have healed. Come on, let’s play together!” I run up to him, wrapping my arms around his waist and hugging his soft belly. He thumbs through my blonde curls for a moment, gazing at me with intense amber eyes. I let out a small squeal of happiness, gripping him tighter and pressing myself into his strong body. Letting out a small chuckle, he looks at me and says,
“Oh, are we doing bear hugs now?” Suddenly the breath is squeezed out of me as he wraps his muscular arms around me, holding me so tightly I couldn’t breath. Flailing my arms wildly, I struggle in his grip, making noises that sounded similar to a dying whale as I attempted to get out of his death hold. Laughing, he relaxes his grip and grabs me by the waist, tossing me in the air. I squeal and laugh as he catches me and holds me close to him, supporting me with one hand underneath the folds of my legs and another around my shoulders. Gazing into my eyes with a joyful expression, he kisses my forehead, brushing back my wild and tangly hair. I nuzzle his chest, relishing the warm embrace.
“I love you, Max.”
“I love you too, big brother.” I say softly. Then, scrambling out of his arms, I fall into the snow. “C’mon! Let’s play!” Scooping some icy snow into my hands, I fling it at him, missing horribly and frightening a nearby squirrel. Shaking his head at me, he begins to gather a large handful of snow, shaping it into a ball.
“Oh, Max. You should have learned not to mess with the big guy.” He takes the large snowball, bigger than my head, and chucks it at me, hitting me square in the stomach and knocking me backwards. Laughing, I jump to my feet and race away from him,
“Come and catch me, fatty!”
“Hey! I’m not fat! I’m fluffy!” he shouts, running after me. Of course, him being about five times my size, it didn't take long for him to catch up. He throws me to the ground, the snow cushioning our fall as we collapse in a fit of laughter. We lay there for a bit, looking at the clouds and jumping from topic to topic, from his new love interests to the picture I colored on Friday. Within less than ten minutes, I begin to fidget and rise from the ground, hopping and prancing around.
“Chris! Come on! Let’s climb the ice mountains!” I dash off, ready to climb the ice covered rocks and bricks left by construction crews.
“Be careful, Max! You better not fall and get hurt. I don't feel like listening to you whine and cry.” I roll my eyes and begin to climb, my torn and battered sneakers sliding against the ice as I reach up for a hand hold. Focusing intently on my climbing, I continue to make my way up it, slowly inching up and trying not to fall back. A flash of red catches my eyes, a shrill squawk startling me. I lose hold of my grip, slipping down the ice. Flailing for something to hold, I grab a stick poking out of the mound. As my fist encloses around it, I feel the sharp prick of thorns. I let out a scream but refuse to let go, using my other hand to pull myself to the top of the mound. I lay across the top, gasping and staring at my hand, numb in the cold. Several thorns stick out from my wooly glove, and I was glad I had worn it. I took it off, staring upon the small cuts in my hand and examining the damage the briar had done. Chris was already beside me, taking my hand from me and looking at it.
“What happened to being careful?” he sighs sarcastically, and tears swell in my eyes. I hadn’t meant to fall. If it weren’t for the stupid bird startling me, none of it would have happened.
“I didn’t mean to!” A pathetic whine escapes my mouth and I look down at my hand, the thorns standing upright in my palm with small rivulets of blood streaming down it. I sniffle, wiping my nose on my sleeve. His eyes soften as he glances into my eyes.
“Hey, it’s going to be okay… I didn’t mean to fuss. Big brother’s got you.” He begins to pull the thorns out one by one, each time more and more blood gushes out of my palm, and I grimace in pain. When the last one is out, he takes my hand and wipes the blood off on his shirt before giving it a gentle kiss. “See? I kissed it all better. Now let’s go home before you break something.”
He holds my hand in his all the way home. Even when approached (and laughed at) by an old neighborhood friend, he refuses to let go. Protectively, he keeps me close to him. When we get home, I head straight to our bedroom and flop down on the bed, staring up at the small box TV that sat on the dresser. Chris entered in shortly after, pushing me to the other side of the bed to make room for him. With one arm around me, we doze off watching one of our favorite movies, Ghostbusters.

Hi Tigerlilly37, Felistia here with a review on your story.

Story: So not much story whys so far, but still interesting none the less. I like that you have decided to help the reader to connect with the characters before introducing action. The only problem with this is that some times the writer has trouble introducing a good story hook, in other words nothing to make the reader want to read more. You managed to pull this off though in my opinion.
Characters: There are only two characters at the moment for what I know. A brother and his sister. You introduced the relation between them very well and made me feel for both of them. This is good for later on if you decided to break them up or something like that. The dialogue is great as well and I like that you made the sister's dialogue seem younger and more childish that the brothers.
Description: The description in here is great and gives me a really good picture of what is going on and where the characters are. I do have one little problem with it though. You have the characters in snow and through out the chapter I couldn't feel the cold, which I am sure was there. I think you need to include some more smell, feel and taste. The sight and sound is great and is perfect the way it is.
Small problems: Okay so this is probably just me that thinks this, but if I was going to call to my older brother I would use his name. I know that you are trying to make his name a reveal later on, but this line feels a bit strange coming from a younger sister. (“Brother! Join me!”)
(Even when approached (and laughed at) by an old neighbourhood friend, he refuses to let go.) This line doesn't read or feel quite right, maybe try rewording it a bit. :
And that is all from me. Hope I was of some use and I look forward to reading your next chapter. Never stop writing and I hope you have a great day\night.
Thank you so much for this review! As far as the story, you definitely seem to have already hit the hammer on the head. I think you are right about the descriptions, and how I might need to say my brothers name more often, so I'll try to go back and fix that. Thank you so much, and have a nice day!
Allo there! It's me... And, I'm going to, uh, review this and stuff. So, here we go!
Okay so before I say anything else, I just want to point out the Ghostbusters is amazing. I love the reference to it at the end!
Now, onto actually reviewing stuff...
This is a very cute line. I feel like it helps build the character of Chris. What I'd like to mention, is that it feels like there should be a comma inbetween the "it" and "all". And possibly add a question mark to the end of the sentence as well.
Something about the "by" after the parantheses seems a little off to me. It just doesn't sound right in my head, but maybe that's just me. Try taking it out and see what you think.
Nothing bad to say here... Just wanted to point out how adorable and heart warming that is.
And with that, I conclude my review! I'm going to give "A Chance To Fly, A Chance To Fall - Chapter 1" a 9.9/10! (I give out way too many 9 decimal somethings, don't I?) It was over all a beautiful piece of writing, and I can't wait to see how this all turns out. I also really love the contrast between this and the orginal version of chapter 1.
Well, that's it for my review! Next time you need a review on anything, you know who to call... Ghostbusters! ...I mean me!
Awwwwww! This was adorable! Hi, I'm TheFantasy14.
Anyway, I liked this a lot. Your characters are vivid and believable, And I just love the relationship between them. You say this is based of your own life? Awesome!
One thing I'm going to ask, just how old is your main character. Judging form her dialogue I'd say around five or six. Yes? No?
I'm curious to know more about the character's everyday life. What is their family like? Do they have any other siblings or relatives living with them?
The sort of thing I write are more fantasy (Dur. Username.) and I normally don't have to rely on those kinds of details to put much important depth into my cast of characters (Though is plays a small role in one of the characters of Champions. Shameless of me to advertise, I know...)
But with realistic that kind of stuff can really come out into the spotlight so I'm excited to see a bit of that.
This has a lot of promise. I expect great things from you.

Thank you so much! My main character (who is my younger self haha) IS around 6-7ish at the time this took place, and you will get to see a lot more of family life in the next chapter that I'm currently trying to finish.
I would love to take a look at some of your stories/novel once in a while, considering I love fantasy.
Again, thanks, and have a nice day!
no problem. I currently need reviews on Champions (There I go again...) so if you want to check that out, it would be highly appreciated.
I will do it right now! It sounds very interesting.
Good day to you! Luata here for a review, first things first though, I apologize if this review seems overly harsh or to nit-picky or anything, I would like to get your feedback on whether or not this review was helpful [I'm trying to reformat my reviews to be more helpful to the author] so please take a second just to send me a message on what you thought, mkay?
First Impressions
On the first read through of this work I was really impressed. I liked the work as a stand alone, although people might bring up the point it is a bit ... out of place? I'm not sure how to describe it, but it seems like it is a scene from a novel, not a stand alone piece, but I'm not the one to judge that.
Grammar and Nitpicks
I didn't see all that many grammar mistakes, more infallacies within the writing itself, which might seem really picky now, but as an author you have to pick your words carefully so they have the most impact possible! To make it clear, mistake fixes are in red and rewrites are written in blue.
Rewrite:
ColdSnow crunches underfoot as I alk alongside my older brother, wearing nothing but a light hoodie and worn out jeans with thick wool gloves. We moved at a brisk pace down the frosty sidewalk as fresh snow floated around us.Beyond that, I saw minimal to no grammar errors [I didn't see any but I'm sure someone else could find something that I missed] and I congratulate you on that!
This was a very nice piece and I look forward to seeing more from you!
Write on!

Thank you so much for the review! I really like how you worded the first paragraph, and I hope you don't mind if I change it. I do intend to elevate the story, this is only the first chapter and so I'm just trying introduce some of the characters.
