In Writings/Rambles

PreviousNext

Ephemeral and evasive, like a spirit of light fading into the mist of a stormy night, flaunting it's shining beauty, yet staying out of reach. Never to be fully tamed or captured.

It would sometimes come back like an old friend, all warm and fuzzy, familiar and comfortable. A sense that no time at all had passed settling in. And then, it was nowhere to be seen.

Seeking it, searching for it, scrambling to recreate a moment to evoke it again. Most times it seemed a worthless effort, a bastardization of a time passed.

There was no formula, seemingly inconsistent and impossible to fabricate. Lies sometimes worked as a temporary aid, but ultimately, facades are just that.

Then came the blue, looming figure of storm resemblance. Insufferable and nothing like that warmth, it veiled the world to make it all seem more grey, more dull. An asphyxiation noticeable enough to be upsetting, but most of the time barely more than an annoying inconvenience.

The indulgence in distraction did little to set it back, and much less to bring back the brightness. A pointless routine yielding pointless results. A wide and spacious prison, but a confinement nonetheless.

And yet, through the cracks of that unsightly interior, the warmth seeped in stubbornly, scarce and slightly dim, but present all the same. Its limitation, its restraint, only made each strand of light seem to shine all the brighter, like a diamond in the rough, a hidden gem.

Peering beyond the darkened veil of gray and dullness, there hid its form, indescribable and incomprehensible. A beacon of light amidst a rocky and treacherous shore. A guiding guardian who watched and admired, as it was admired back. A stay that could never be permanent or manufactured, lest it loose its significance, lest it becomes replaceable.

But even with the knowledge of its eventual departure, of its temporal state, one couldn't help but cling, to hope against hope to stay in its embrace forever, to bask in its light and be filled by it, consumed, to shine just as bright. Foolish and naive as it was, a weary heart longs for rest, for comfort, a romance of fantasy to rejoice in for eternity. But the heart would only grow to hate it, just as it does with any repetitions.

And so the light lifted, and its presence dimmed once more. Yet it never truly left, only decreased in intensity. And beyond feeling disappointment, it brought relief, as it gave time to cherish the memory of its warmth, and await its next appearance. And as it left, one would perhaps smile fondly, and through the veil, it could be almost perceived to be smiling right back.

For happiness is a beautiful illusion we only indulge ourselves in at the moment, and to try to control it and bend it to one's will for the intent of reproducing it, is nothing but purely inhumane. And yet, yearning for that might be the most human thing of all.

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!

Shalt we commence with the possessed S’more?

Top Graham Cracker - This is a story about the feeling of happiness, a feeling that comes and goes, that doesn’t really stay, but is still lingering. It is more so like…bliss.

Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - I have no recommendations to make as of right now, but if you would like to edit this, then you may.

Chocolate Bar - I love the way you describe this feeling of happiness. To me, it represents growing up. How happiness seems more frequent as a child and less so as someone gets older, but it’s still there, all the same. I think we as humans are scared of letting go that happiness, of being completely miserable forever, but that happiness always stays and is always there if one knows where to look. It may be less intense and frequent but it’s still there.

Closing Graham Cracker - Overall, a very beautiful short story! If you ever make any more stories, I’ll think about checking them out! I enjoyed reading this, this story that has its own poetry weaved into it and so…

I wish you a fantastic day/night! ^v^

And to you too a warm welcome. I work in the trenches of the Green Room so I’ll be looking at your story today =D
Or maybe your… poem? First sentence already feels like I should start get my poem interpretation skills ready!

I kinda like that line: “Lies sometimes worked as a temporary aid, but ultimately, facades are just that.” I understand we are talking abt the nature of bliss in here but this is also pretty universal. How lies just … poison everything and are not any substitute for the real deal.

I can’t rly tell what you mean by that: “looming figure of storm resemblance”. Is this a description of the colour blue? I read so much fantasy, I am ready to accept this is just some personified elemental spirit, nothing can faze me.
The last line of this paragraph just feels like fancy words in a neat row to me :/

In general I feel like your adjectives don’t really add emphasis, rather they overload your sentences.

Hm sometimes this way of capturing “bliss” or whatever illusive thing we are talking abt here is taken bit too literal. I was kinda lost throughout the last few paragraphs @.@

Still like the last paragraph as a summary 😊

Hello there! First of all, thank you for reading and engaging, it means a lot :).
Second, I'd like to explain what confused you; Basically, since this is about the concept of happiness, the looming figure represents sadness, which is why it's related to the color blue. Since in this case, I also gave "Bliss" a sort of symbolical form in the text. It talks about the idea that one could never truly appreciate joy if they don't know sadness, how this feelings can shift your perspective of the world drastically depending on how they affect you. And how happiness, despite being something we all seek, is something to only indulge in during temporary moments, since if those moments lasted forever, they wouldn't be special anymore.

Thanks again for reading and giving criticism, I greatly appreciate it. ^_^

Aww thanks for the response. I see what you mean with associating sadness with blue. Should have thought of that! :3
