“How did you know you loved her?”

“You know you love someone when you have an insatiable desire to serve their pancreas on only the finest silver platter. Or when you stay awake at night, contemplating just how to kill them so they feel the least amount of pain.”

Jarrett looks at me with such intensity from his blue eyes. He reminds me of a child: wide-eyed, curious, intent on listening, even if it be to the cannibal that of which he shares his cell. He stares at me, unblinkingly for a moment, before turning away.

“Well, I’m not sure if I felt the same love you did then.”

I crack a smile and tilt my head. “Oh?”

He shakes his head. “No. I showed my love by tattooing her face above my dick.”

We both erupt in laughter. I can tell he’s glad to have pleased me, to have further dissipated the thick air in the cell between us since I arrived a week ago. He’s good natured and great company; he does not judge because he himself is scared of judgment. This is why I find myself attracted to him, willing to share my thoughts.

“But I know I felt something for her,” he says after a minute, turning his head so he’s gazing at the ground. “Otherwise, I don’t think I would have shot everyone that I heard she was screwing.” He’s silent for a good minute before looking at me. “Four. That’s how many.”

I have sympathy for him. I would not know what it would feel like to have someone you love cheating on you since I ate everyone I felt affection for, but I certainly know it is hard. I have no words of condolences other than, “She did not deserve your love if she was willing to share hers with other men.”

He doesn’t say anything. There’s silence until I murmur, “I can tell you my story, if you would like. From the moment I heard her laugh serenade my ears till…”

“You ate her?”

I smile. “Yes.”

When I first saw the love of my life, she was shivering in the rain. The storm that had come on that day was unexpected, and she was unprepared. Her black hair was plastered to her face, dark strands like cracks against her porcelain skin. Overlooking the drenched clothes, trembling, and slightly runny makeup, I could see she posessed natural beauty.

So, as any proper gentleman would do, I shared with her my umbrella and, with her consent, took her home to warm up with a fire and a meal.

You should imagine my surprise when I learned that not only was she attractive, but quite intellectual. She was a young woman, in her early twenties, and astonished me with her ability to hold a conversation with a person like myself.

We did not simply talk about the economy or the news, but of our lives. She was open to me, telling me of her divorced parents and how she buried herself in books and school. She said she did not want to become like her older brother, whom had distanced himself with drugs even when she needed him.

“My brother had a drug abuse problem as well.”

The light from the fire had caught her green eyes right then, making them sparkle like candles reflecting off of water. She brought her glass of wine, the first of many to come, away from her lips so she could whisper, “Really?”

“Yes. I still loved him, even though he brought our family grief with his involvement in criminal activity. I wanted desperately to shield him from the things he saw and experienced.”

"I'm so sorry," she had said, reaching out and touching my upper arm gently. I smiled to show I appreciated the gesture and to cover up the fact that it had sent electric currents up my spinal cord.

I was also unable to tell her how I had killed my brother and eaten him.

We bonded that night. Before we knew it, it was getting late and she needed to get some sleep for she had class early in the morning. When she left, she thanked me for the wine and said she would love to come over again sometime.

“I do not believe I ever caught your name,” I added as she was crossing the threshold.

She stopped, her dainty hand resting on the wooden door-frame, and replied, "Carmen Stewart."

“Charles Gideon. What a pleasure it was to have you over, Mrs. Stewart.”

She smiled, her soft pink lips slightly stained burgandy from the wine. “What a pleasure it was to be here, Charles."

From then on, nearly once a week, she would come over. I began to become familiar with the small gestures she made, the sound of her voice when she was remorseful or joyous. I grew so accustomed to her presence that when she left, I was empty. Even though we both knew that we shared a connection, I do not believe it had simply formed when we had shared a drink, but yet, when I had first seen her.

In only a couple months, we had swapped life stories. I knew every detail of her past, but she did not know every detail of mine. She had no idea that the number of people I have consumed cannot be counted using merely one hand, or that I was musing over pairing her with a spicy garnish to accentuate the sweetness of her skin. She did not know that I was trying to think of the quickest ways to kill her, or that when she would come over and we would share a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, it would be her last.

She would be confused, perhaps a bit hurt, but only for a few seconds.

Our friendship could have continued but I already knew all there was to know about her life. All that was left to find out was what her heart tasted like.

I had looked in the mirror before I left to walk her home from her last class of the day. I had been dressed in my finest suit, brown hair glossed back and bowtie straight. I wanted to empress her, more so tonight than any other. I wanted to wear this outfit in the future and remember the night I had worn it and shown dearest Carmen my love.

After dinner, we went and sat by the fireplace: our custom every time we were together. We sipped from our wine glasses, talked, and let the heat from the fire and the warmth of the alcohol fill us with the boldness to lean over and kiss.

I could taste the robust flavor of the wine on her lips. I inhaled the scent of her plush perfume. She felt soft to the touch and so fragile, like a china dish. And easily broken was she, when I cupped her face between my hands, giving her a passionate kiss that lingered after I pulled away and snapped her neck.

Even though her head was twisted in an odd position and the life was slowly draining from her emerald eyes, she was still the most stunning and magnificent woman I had ever seen.

But I could not waste time wishing that I had spared her for one more night. I had promptly took her to the bathroom, setting her down in the tub and beginning to extract her organs. I would eat them over the next few weeks, savoring their taste and remembering my darling Carmen, until the police would arrest me for the death of her and countless others.

The taste of her heart, heightened by that spicy garnish I had planned, was divine.

“Wow,” Jarrett breathes.

I raise a hand and frivolously touch my lips with the tips of my fingers. I draw in a deep breath. Oh, how I miss you immensely, Carmen. Our intellectual conversations still reminiscence in my ears. My pallet still recalls the taste of your liver. My eyes are forever imprinted with your face.

Jarrett swallows, timid to speak, but knowing that he can be forthright with me. “What about all those other people you killed?”

“They were family. Friends.”

Jarrett is sitting on the edge of his bed, twisting his tattooed hands in his lap. He is burning with interest and asks, “Why aren’t you in an institution for the criminally insane or something?”

I grin. “I am not insane, my friend.”

He licks his lips, filled to the brim with questions. “Then why did you do it? Why would you eat someone you love?”

Every family member and dear friend’s faces flash in my memory.

Carmen’s is the freshest, most vivid of them all.

“To protect them from the harshness of the world and the ache it brings. They only needed to experience pain one last time, and now they are all safe.” I close my eyes.

“Safe, and with me forever.”

Kev, I swear I have no idea whatsoever how you come up with these ideas and wonderful schemes of stories to write. I have only a few nitpicks.

The first few paragraphs were a little confusing. I wasn't sure if it was the narrator or Jarrett who was the cannibal, but then I soon figured it out. Maybe that was just personal stupidity, maybe it was just a confusing part of the story. It doesn't really matter.

The only other thing that disappointed me was this:

But I could not waste time wishing that I had spared her for one more night. I had promptly took her to the bathroom, setting her down in the tub and beginning to extract her organs. I would eat them over the next few weeks, savoring their taste and remembering my darling Carmen, until the police would arrest me for the death of her and countless others.

Omg you told me exactly what your MC did. Instead of telling me, why didn't you show me? The awesomeness of a great horror story is the gore! Your descriptions of the rich and gory are typically amazing, so I'm not sure why you left it out.

I loved how you described the taste of Carmen's flesh, it was disturbing and freaky and great at the same time. You were also completely right, cannibalism and romance go together well. Keep writing Kev, I want to see more!

Dear Kevikur,

I want to applaud you for your work. This peice was intreging from the title to the last word. The whole peice was witty, perfectly detailed, beautiful and yet disturbing at the same time. I really enjoyed reading it and I definatly can see you becoming a great author one day if thats what you aspire to do.

Strangly enough, I really enjoyed Charles. He was awful but his character was so enjoyable. I think you did a brilliant job describing Charles, Carmen, and Jarret. I loved the creativity you used with the characters and I loved the whole theme of cannibalism. It was so original and your writing is overall addicting to read. Thank you for posting and I hope to be reading more from you very soon.

Thank you! Everything you said really means a lot to me. I'm so glad that you enjoy my writing. Hopefully in the future I'll be able to put it to good use!

This was the freakiest, most funny-yet disturbing-piece I have ever read in my entire life. I applaud you. The cannibalism was a wonderful touch, yet it also had meaning and you tell this piece's true meaning of why the cannibal did what he did and I greatly loved that. Keep up the wonderful, yet slightly disturbing, work!!!

Thank you! Disturbing my readers is a hobby I enjoy indeed (;

Wow, that was stunning. The idea of having a modern-day cannibal was unique.

I really like how you dragged the reader into thinking that maybe the narrator would change because he had fallen in love, but no, he still snaps the lady's neck. I really liked this story, it was entertaining.

It seems like Jarret actually wants to change, but the narrator is a dangerous man, and perhaps that is why he didn't want to change.

Suggestions: I think your main focus in this story was the dialogue, and that was a good decision. However, sometimes a little too much dialogue can confuse the reader. Although you might think that the reader knows what you mean because of the characters tone, sometimes it's good to give the reader a little more explanation. *I'm not a very experienced reviewer, I'm just beginning. so the large amount of dialogue could have been there because this is a short story, and that might be the style of this kind of writing. If that's the case, then keep it up. Thanks for sharing this story!

Thank you for your review and input! I'm glad you enjoyed the story as much as you did (:

This is an all you can read buffet of magnificent!! WELL DONE!

I actually praise you for your originality, this is the most intriguing, unique love story I've ever read. Thank god you are a member! Haha!

It's weird, because although the guy is a sick, disgusting freak, you get strangely charmed by his sadistic way of being considerate of others. Haha!

You rock, this is an amazing story. A hundred blessings to you my friend.

However, I do have one tiny tiny criticism; you spelt a word incorrectly.

"pocessed" should be "posessed"

By the way, am I right to think that the jail mate is the cannibal's next victim?

Ah, thank you for pointing out that typo! I had changed it but apparently it likes giving me trouble. I'm sure I got the right spelling this time.

And I'm so glad that you caught on to my hinting; it's very possible that the jail mate just might be another victim.

I have three words for this story-Creepy, disgusting and awesome. I love this story because of the way you have written it and with the ease Charles talks about all this gross stuff. The beginning was one of the best parts of the story.

“You know you love someone when you have an insatiable desire to serve their pancreas on only the finest silver platter. Or when you stay awake at night, contemplating just how to kill them so they feel the least amount of pain.”

I was expecting something like this as I have read your previous stories. But this one was extraordinary.

"I was also unable to tell her how I had killed my brother and eaten him."

I really liked this line.

"In only a couple months, we had swapped life stories. I knew every detail of her past, but she did not know every detail of mine. She had no idea that the number of people I have consumed cannot be counted using merely one hand, or that I was musing over pairing her with a spicy garnish to accentuate the sweetness of her skin. She did not know that I was trying to think of the quickest ways to kill her, or that when she would come over and we would share a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, it would be her last."

This one is the second most creepiest paragraph. i really like the descriptions.

"But I could not waste time wishing that I had spared her for one more night. I had promptly took her to the bathroom, setting her down in the tub and beginning to extract her organs. I would eat them over the next few weeks, savoring their taste and remembering my darling Carmen, until the police would arrest me for the death of her and countless others."

This is the creepiest part.

Keep writing these type of stories with blood and gore because I really enjoy reading them! :D

Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoy this kind of genre of writing :) There will be more like this to come

I really enjoyed your piece. It was a very interesting idea. I would like to see a little more emotion throughout the entire piece. How did each character FEEL as this all happened?

Otherwise, great job!

Thank you and I'll certainly keep that in mind (-:

Hi Kevikur! Here to review your story~

Firstly, wow. This completely sickened me and left me with a horrible feeling- great job! ;D. I mean me feeling sick is nothing to do with the quality of your writing and such, but as you've probably guessed the topic of it all. It was pretty gross, but still great job! I'll start off by talking about the things I liked, and that was firstly just the whole concept of it. Not your ordinary love story? most definitely, although a topic which grossed me out a bit, I like how you've mixed them together and it was actually done really well. I thought you were beginning to bring out some good descriptions here, and I liked that there was a case or two of dark humour. Also, I really liked this line:

I was also unable to tell her how I had killed my brother and eaten him.

I'll now talk about my critiques.
“You know you love someone when you have an insatiable desire to serve their pancreas on only the finest silver platter.

I don't really think insatiable is the right word to use here, because then that means he's never satisfied with his actions? Then why would he do them? Maybe you could explain that a bit more too.

he does not judge because he himself is scared of judgment.

This sentence, or part of the sentence, seems a bit rushed and maybe you could instead show through some dialogue that he's scared of judgement rather than just saying it.

You should imagine my surprise when I learned that not only was she attractive, but quite intellectual.

Similar to my last point, rather than just saying this, show that she's intellectual! This could be through her words or what she does. It's important to try and show and not tell otherwise the piece will start to become an information dump rather than a story.

“My brother had a drug abuse problem as well.”

I think here it needs to be more clear that it's him who's saying it, not her. So perhaps add a 'he said' at the end.

Okay, so something I thought which could be improved a little bit is the dialogue. I think what the characters are saying is relevant to the story, which is good, but I think the way that they say it came off as a little stiff at times. When using dialogue it's important to really think about what there characters would say and how they would say it, put yourself in their shoes and try it out. Another thing to help that you could do which may sound a bit weird but does work is to listen to how people talk around you or on tv to help you write your dialogue a bit more. For example here-
“Yes. I still loved him, even though he brought our family grief with his involvement in criminal activity. I wanted desperately to shield him from the things he saw and experienced.”

This seems like a well-written sentence, but not exactly something the character would say.

I think the biggest issue with this piece is that everything seems a bit rushed. It's not entirely your fault because there was a lot of stuff to squeeze in such a small space, which is quite hard so good on you for that! However, sometimes I thought that things could've done with some more detail. For example, the story of him and his girlfriend who he ate, and their history all seemed a bit rushed. It's quite hard to show weeks and weeks of stuff in a couple of paragraphs, so my suggestion is pick one activity that they did and go into more detail with it. You could even talk more about the brothers' with drug problems bit, so we just understand more about their characters.

“To protect them from the harshness of the world and the ache it brings. They only needed to experience pain one last time, and now they are all safe.”

Here is the only real time that the MC talks about why he does these horrific things, and it seems a bit odd that it's not mentioned before- or also that it could be explained more. I personally think that he seems a bit too normal, and maybe he should come off as a bit more troubled? Just a suggestion ;)

Lastly, a quick thing is that I really did enjoy the bits of dark humour, which were mostly shown right at the beginning with the conversation between the two men. So I just think that that could've been continued more when they talk again, because it's a really good tehcnique to use, and made me laugh even though it's quite a horrific subject that they're talking about.

Overall, this was a very daring story, and I totally commend you for writing about something like this. Although it grossed me out, it was pretty well written, and I like how love and cannibalism have been combined together here. The things I thought could be improved are mentioned more above, so I'll try not to repeat myself there. But honestly, this was a really interesting piece. I hope this review helped, feel free to PM me with any questions you have or if you'd like another review on anything.

Keep writing!

Thank you so much for the review! You're completely right about me showing and not telling; I'll improve on that.

Insatiable also means unquenchable-- so in context, he has an unquenchable desire.
Also, I fully understand that the narrator's dialogue can come off as stiff, but I was trying to give off the impression that he is carefully articulative. I usually never have character(s) with dislodge like this. I remember going back and editing this so he wasn't saying anywhere like it's or doesn't, and boy was it a pain! But I completely understand what you're saying.
I'll also improve if I rush anything in the future.

Thank you very much for reading and helping me out!

Ah okay 'insatiable', I'll need to remember what that means, I get some vocab a bit confused xD
Glad to help!

And I forgot to mention that there were clues throughout the story that tied back to the narrator saying why he did what he did. For example, he ate his brother to protect him, as well as his family to stop their grief.

Oh, I see! Thanks for clearing that up

Hello :)

I want to start off by saying wow! I must say I really enjoyed this story. I don't know much about writing, but I don't see many mistakes in this at all.

" I could see she processed natural beauty."

Did you mean possessed? It seems like that would fit better here. Also I'm very curious as to why the people who had him put in jail didn't see him as insane lol.

But seriously, I really enjoyed reading this. It captured my attention from just seeing the title :) Hope to see more like this!!!

Thank you for the review and point out that little typo!

The narrator had said he wasn't guilty because he knew the consequences of his actions. He most likely had not pleaded innocence because he knew full well of what he was doing.

Hope to read more posts from you!!! This one was very good :)

I will not condemn you for what you did yesterday, if you do it right today.
