Chapter 3
Dracon was summoned by the King the next day. It was odd. He knew the King, but they had never been on close terms like with Ramar. The King seemed quite content to ignore him. But it did not matter why he had been summoned. When Lord Jairon called, you obeyed.
The palace was different than the Assassin’s Tower. Everywhere you looked there some priceless painting, fragile vase, or ancient statue. It always made him uncomfortable. He felt like at any moment he would accidentally break something. The stone walls were cool in the autumn weather and velvet rugs lined the floors. Compared to the Tower, where everything was made of a rough stone, uneven and dangerous if you did not watch where you were going, and the only expense things there were a few finely weapons that had been bestowed upon Assassins for whatever reason, this was an amazing site.
When he’d arrived at the great wooden doors that marked the entrance to the Hall of Kings, he stopped. He inhaled deeply, letting the breath out slowly, then grabbed the latch and pushed open one of the doors.
The King sat in his lavish throne, a servant standing behind him waiting to be called on and Ramar to his right. Odd, Dracon thought. Ramar should be out seeing to issues regarding the uprisings. As he walked into the room, Dracon didn’t have to look to know two guards stood watch over the door.
Dracon moved forward, dropping to one knee and head bowed in front of the king.
“You summoned me my Lord?” he said without looking up. A person hardly ever looked the king in the eye.
“Rise Master Dracon,” the king said in a calm tone. That’s good sign. At least he’s not angry, Dracon thought, standing.
“Dracon, I’ve summoned you here on Master Ramar request. He tells me that you have surpassed all expectations he had for you. I knew that you were special, even when you first came to live in the castle after that fire captured your family. You have proven yourself a loyal servant to me and the Kingdom. Many of those who sought me harm are dead because of your bravery. For that I will be eternally grateful. But, now, for the matter at hand. Master Ramar believes it time for him to step down from his post as High Assassin.” Dracon looked up, the evidence of pure shock everywhere on his face. Ramar was nodding his head, validating what the king said.
“My lord, may I ask, why?” Dracon said. This time it was Ramar who spoke, using his formal accent.
“ Dracon, I have been an assassin for forty years, the High assassin for twenty. And though I hate to say it, I’m getting old. The High Assassin’s first priority is to protect the king, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to do that anymore. It was about time I step down. The point of this summoning is that I have chosen you to replace me. “ Dracon stood there a moment stunned. He could hardly believe his ears. Me as High Assassin? he thought. The leader of the Order? He had thought about it of course, it was something all assassins dreamed about. He had even expected to get the job, but not for another few years. The king’s voice woke him from his thoughts.
“So, Master Dracon, what do you say?” Dracon didn’t have to think twice about it.
“I would be honored to serve you, my lord.”
“Excellent,” said the king with a grin.
Hello again, doing chapter 3 now...
I would rephrase this for "and the only expensive things were a few finely weapons"
Other than that, I still think your chapter's are relatively short. You have a good writing style, it's easy to follow, but seems to me just when you really get into it, the chapter is finished. I think adding on would be a good thing, in my opinion anyways
I liked this. The imagery was good, but you could do to describe the characters a bit more (unless you've described them more in previous chapters). Dracon's emotional reactions are also good.
Like you said, there were a few mistakes, mainly missing/incorrect words. It shouldn't be too hard to fix. Here's an example.
There "was" some.
