THE ENCOUNTER WITH THE 'KEKEMAN'

PreviousNext

As I walked out of my house into d smoothly tarred road_Enugu road, I hurriedly waved dwn a commercial three-cycle driver knwn popularly as 'keke'..I was almost late for n important appointment, so it was expedient, den, dat I tried my very best 2 beat d time.I had no time 2 argue with d 'keke man' or any keke man at dat, n so, whn he said dat he wud collect N70, I didn't argure..
Whn I entered d three-cycle, I realized dat in my haste I had failed 2 appreciate d beauty n sweetness of d morning.As I sat in d keke,d cul breeze made me feel relaxed 4 a while..
The kekeman, was a total stranger 2 me..Sincerely, I don't think I hav entered a particular keke twice b4, n dere was no way I could have knwn Him.And besides, I hardly discussed anything apart 4rm d price with d kekemen..
As he 'cruised along' Bende Road carefully, he stepped on his brakes n slowed down to wave at A beautiful middle aged woman n a young boy of about 18..Both were dressed decently..
Suddenly, d man asked"U knw dose people?" 'Hw could I have knwn them? ', I thought. Infact I began 2 think dat d man was'loosing it',seriously! My answer was NO, a big one.
Whn I looked at d man, I noticed dat He was smiling. His eyes were full of pride..He said_"Dat woman is my wife n d handsome boy is my boy"..He was proud of His family n d reason was nt far fetched. This was because despite d fact dat He was a poor kekeman dat worked Himself out, His son made sure he did nt regret by excelling academically.D boy's dressing portrayed dat He was nt a worthless Child..What more, He had a supportive n caring wife.
I'm nt just telling u wht I think he was thinking bt I'm telling u wht he actually told me..D rest of wht he said was as vague as a sound in d distance 4 I began 2 think.."Could my parents look @ me n smile proudly?"; "could my dad point at me in d distance n say "dats my boy"?"..
I really thought abt it n infact was still in d deep blue sea of d mind swimming in my thoughts whn d man said_"We are here boy".I reluctantly stepped of d keke as I was still lost in my reverie.I dipped my hands into my left side pocket 2 bring out d transport fare whn d man said "U knw wht,I think u are a very good kid. Most kids I see are different.U are just like my boy n I see a great future before u."
My!! I was flattered! I passionately thanked d man n just whn I tried 2 give him d money 4 d service he had rendered, He stopped me..I was touched..Oh! I was touched by d man's kindness..
"Sir, I really don't knw hw 2 express my gratitude 2 u for ure kindness..I'm overwhelmed by d extravagant way u have given out d love n kindness others hardly find time 2 give..U've really inspired me. Thank u very much sir" These were d words dat poured out of my mouth or rather, out of my heart..
The man drove away seemingly happy n left me thinking again..It was an Irony.Wasn't it? Dat I nw considered a man dat I would have sworn was 'running nuts', to b d one of d wisest men I've ever spoken 2; dat a man I considered a total stranger was nw a gud friend 2 me..Wasn't it?
However d man inspired me 2 always b a light_a source of encouragement n inspiration 2 whoever I cm across..Dat was wht d man's family was 2 him, dat is wht he is 2 me n dat is wht I'll try 2 b 2 u..
Nw pals, don't fail 2 comment n tell me wht u have learnt.I will b grateful..
