lungs breathe, hearts beat and my mind loves

by Jas

my heart has never fallen in love
because my heart is a pulsing beating
thing that is meant to pound blood
through the highways of my veins,
not flutter and skip beats like skipping stones
and drop when i see a grin or taste a kiss or
hear a voice.

i get headaches sometimes because i love
with my brain and i fall and trip and stumble
into boys who don’t like me, boys who fuck
bodies not personalities and i always
promised myself i wouldn’t fall for danger
but i guess i break those the same way
those boys break love.

sometimes i think that if i stop shuddering
when they bite my ear and if i kiss them quiet
when they tell me that i’m too good for them,
that i make them pure for
a little bit (but you can’t drink only a cup
of holy water and expect to reach salvation)
then i’ll make them fall, trip and stumble right
in love with me but that won’t happen
because it’s the nice boys that love me best
and the dangerous boys that couldn’t care less.

I realize this is going to probably sound a little silly, but I'm curious as to why most of your poetry has become extremely sexualized. Lying was a topic you particularly liked for a while there, but lately, everything has had these dark undertones of sexual desire but, more importantly, desire you don't particularly reciprocate.

And it seems extremely mature. I don't know if I particularly like it. It leaves a rusty taste in my mouth, like you're trying to come across as indifferent and have, in most cases, done so. But the sexual nature of your work has become such a predominant factor that it is extremely hard to look past or to take it for what it is. It's disconcerting.

Mind you, I still think you're a fantastic poet. You have a way of stating things for exactly what they are and are determined to lack all forms of shame in searching for the right style or emphasis needed to prove your points. But you really don't need to exclaim the topic of fucking to get someone's attention, and you really don't need it to depict someone being a morally uncouth person.

Maybe I miss the sincerity in some of your earlier work. It held a delicacy that warmed me a bit. This is so raw in nature that is continues to claw at areas most people don't particularly like to be brought back to. On a more personal note, this poem has brought back far too many uncouth memories of my own that don't particularly need to be brought back.

I'm just curious as to the main reason sex has become your choice symbol. Because sex is all the things you've made it out to be, and yet it is nothing at all like you've stated. Not in the poems on your tumblr or in the way you talk about sex and morality comparatively. Sex is not bad.

Maybe I'm just not 'getting it'.

Nonetheless, I know I've seen better from you, love. And, in some cases, this was an extremely sound poem with an extremely strong point that you put across as bluntly as physically possible. But it did not constitute for beauty or shaping. You knew exactly what you were going to write about and wrote about it in the exact manner you did.

It's just a bit unsettling that this has been your narration's version of what sex is supposed to symbolize. And that sex and maturity are themes you choose to encompass on a daily basis when there are so many things you've written beautifully without the need to be so explicit.

Props on that first stanza, though. I would ditch the rest of this just for that first bit.

I truly honestly love this poem. It describes exactly how I feel towards boys. And much like the main character in this, I do not let my heart love, I only let my mind think that I am in love so that maybe, they'll fall in love with me, or even in like with me. I'm not a heart-breaker, I'm just not into boys that much. Anyway, this poem has great rhythm and it's inspiring in a twisted way (at least to me).
