When we were young...

by JCK
I’ll miss the days when we were young,
playing battleships and soldiers
under the mid-august sun.
I'd be Arnie and you Stallone -
unkillable, invincible,
other kids would run home.
The battlefield ours, then and forever
1st Platoon, 23rd Squadron,
we signed up together.
I'll still well up in tears of joy and pride
knowing you were there with me,
standing right by my side.
When we were young,
these games did us no harm.
Now, know that I love you, brother,
As you die in my arms

This is so powerful and I love how unforced the rhyme feels. Really beautifully written and painfully sad. Well done. :)
