Last year (freshmen year), my class read Lord of the Flies. I wasn't really looking forward to it, and unfortunately I wasn't at school for the week they were reading it, I just got all the feedback and stuff like that. Not quite the same effect. So I was wondering...
Should I give it a try???

Lord of the Flies was... interesting.
I recommend reading it twice.
But it was definitely a good book.

Yeah, I would suggest that you read it. It's a really short book, the vocabulary isn't tough at all; when I was in eighth grade I think I got through it in under two hours, so even if you don't like it, it's not like you wasted your life away reading some three-inch book cough herman melville. It'll be kind of interesting to read a book that you've heard analyzed before but haven't yet read! I can't say I've ever really done that. Okay, wait, maybe I have, since I didn't read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight until the day before I was supposed to take a test on it (don't tell my English teacher).
I always wondered how it would have been different if they had been all girls instead... maybe it would have been even more vicious, I don't know. There's also this new reality show called Kid Nation that seems like it was inspired by LOTF... I hope it has a slightly happier ending, since they're real kiddies @_@.
The beginning didn't drag me in, but it was a very well-written and deep-meaning peice.
It's a classic...you won't be able to live without it!!! People will make references to it forever and if you haven't read it you'll feel extremely lost! It's not my favorite book in the world (that would be The Fall of Atlantis among other Marion Zimmer Bradley books and, of course, the Harry Potter series), but I liked it and think everyone should read it at some point in their lives. It's just one of those books, like Catcher in the Rye, and you have to read it!!!

I typically don't like the books we read in school, but I loved this, 1984, and Brave New World. I think it's because they were easy reads and very original storylines. LOF is really good if you like little naked kids running around the jungle carrying spears.

Its got everything a good book needs, teen violence, chrashing planes, murder. Heck, we even have a secluded, depressed kid and I think Piggy was gay.
Yeah I guess your right there. When I think about it, the itslef wasn't too bad. I think the reason I dilike it so much is because we did pick out every tiny little bit about about.
My teacher probaly picked up things that Golding probably didn't even realise.
The lessons would not reflect how good the book is. I agree that it is annoying to pore over a book endlessly picking out every tiny detail, but this doesn't make the book a bad read.

I read it last year on my own and this year in class: I found I liked the book a lot better on the second reading. Either way, it's very thought-provoking and interesting. And really, what have you got to lose? If you don't like the book, you don't have to read it again, but at least you can say you read it.
William Golding's portrayal of the real nature of human beings is something you will never forget. What struck me about it so much was that it was so true, I could actually see myself in the positions if the characters doing what they did, even if it was cruel or malicious.
I think you should read it. I thought it was a good book. My class spent some time going over it and talking about the book when I was in 7th grade. It's been a while since I have read it, so I don't remember a lot of it.

I don't mind violent scenes, it's the plane crash that bugs me...I don't like planes...

I also read it for my freshman year.
Some people liked it and some didn't, mainly because of some violent scenes, but overall, I think that it was an excellent book and a must-read for high-school students.
Random anectdote: The year after my class read it, we had a history teacher who had us do a project that involved us pretending that we were on a deserted island and had to make our own government. We came up with the idea of having a council and everyone voting on the rules. Our teacher was really impressed at first, because he said that most students jus picked one kid as the leader, but then we told him that we had all read Lord of the Flies.
As others have said, yeah, it's one of those books you sort of have to read, but may not like. I read it my freshman year for English class. I hated it. End of story. But it's still a good idea to read it.

Yep. I don't know about the book itself but I've seen the movie, so I know the story, and its brilliant. Written essays on it, I have. Go for it, you wont regret it.
