Centaur Stage CHP 1: An unexpected guest {Sanders Sides Fanfiction}

A/N This fic is a fanmade crossover of Centaur Sides by Annadekiller, and (semi) canon versions of Thomas and the sides. If you have read Centaur sides (unlikely lol), this starts off after the Fair but before Vidcon. I have basically no update schedule, and I have absolutely no guarantees I will finish this. Oh and yes, I did ask Anna permission if i could use her AU.

Roman woke up gradually. His mind slowly pulled itself to the edge of wakefulness as his senses returned one by one. He could feel Remus’s flank pressed up against his own and assumed he was still sleeping. He wouldn’t be this still if he were awake. Roman almost always woke up before Remus, but on the off chance he didn’t, Remus would always wake Roman up. He was pretty sure that his twin did it intentionally. No one moved that much when getting up normally.

The heaviness of his limbs faded and Roman began the process of carefully disentangling himself from his brother. He unhooked their arms, which only caused Remus’s eyes to briefly flutter open and give him a slightly accusatory look that ended when Roman tossed their shared blanket over his shoulders. Then Roman stood. Both his upper and lower spines popped. The morning air was cold, damp, and lingering. Normally the barn would be heated, but the power and cell signal had gone out two days ago because of the thunderstorm. He stepped off the large mattress, trying not to jostle it too much.

Remus would probably wake up soon now that he had left. Probably he would be awake by the time Patton made breakfast at least. Roman trotted over to his stall’s door and slipped out into the main corridor of the barn. Patton was, unsurprisingly, already awake. He was sitting on one of the beanbags around the currently out of commission communal TV while reading. The pony glanced up from his magazine and gave Roman a small wave. Roman returned it and continued to move toward the barn’s exit.

Roman had made it a habit to pick up Thomas from his house and bring him to the barn in the mornings. Although sometimes he would forget, usually because of Remus. Besides, it was healthy to go for a walk every once in a while. Though not today, it had been over a year since the last big rainy season, and while it was nowhere near as bad as last year, Roman didn’t want to leave his friend to walk across the muddy field with those frail human legs of his.

He left the barn and began to quickly cross the field between the barn and the house. The sky was a dull gray, clouds hanging low after hours of steady rain, the ground soft beneath his hooves. A faint rumble rolled somewhere in the distance. He pushed more power into his stride until he was sprinting across the soaked earth, water flying in his wake. He felt his hearts begin to beat harder. He was nowhere near strained by such a small distance, even with the unfavorable weather conditions, and could keep running for ages at this speed, but he felt his muscles activate and shake off the stiffness that had crept in while he slept. Roman was sure that even if Thomas hadn’t sprained his ankle months ago and started this whole thing, he would have started going for morning runs without the others anyway.

It didn’t take him long to arrive at the house, and unlike usual, when Thomas would wait for Roman to arrive before stepping out of the house, his human friend was lying facedown on the porch. Roman’s tail twitched.

“Thomas?” Roman asked, a knot forming in his chest.

The human didn’t respond. Roman ran up to the porch and hesitantly placed a hoof on the front step. It creaked under his weight. He knew Patton had gone into the house before, but he wasn’t a pony, and he certainly didn’t like the idea of being stuck in a wheelchair for a second time. He glanced at Thomas again and carefully stepped onto the porch. The wood complained under his weight, but it held.

Roman crouched down beside Thomas. He was covered in mud, and there was an eerie feeling of wrongness when Roman looked at him that he couldn’t quite place. In his left hand he was clutching a long black stick of some kind. Roman carefully lowered himself into a sitting position and carefully moved Thomas onto his back.

The human didn’t react. The black stick, which Roman now recognized as a cane, fell out of his hand and rolled across the porch. Thomas looked wrong. His hair was too short, he was too old, and his ears were pierced.

Roman’s eyes widened as he realized that the human in front of him was not his friend. He stood up somewhat shakily, the porch complaining with every movement. He took a breath and then decided what to do. Roman banged on Thomas’s door and shouted his name.

He wished that the phones were working. Roman could hear several thumps coming from inside the house before Thomas swung the door open.

“Thomas!” Roman said again.

The human gave him a wide-eyed, half-asleep stare, carrying his toothbrush in one hand and holding the door open with the other.

“Roman?” Thomas asked.

The centaur stepped back to reveal the sleeping man and gestured at him. “There is a guy here.”

Thomas instantly seemed more awake. He crouched next to the other human and checked his pulse, then placed two fingers under his nose. “He’s breathing and has a steady pulse, though it’s weird he isn’t shivering.”

“Thomas, what do we do?” Roman asked.

Thomas seemed to think for a moment, then said, “I’m going to put him on the couch and cover him with some towels and blankets. We need to call...” He paused, remembering the lack of signal. “I’ll drive into town and...”

Roman interrupted him. “You said it isn’t safe to drive.”

“It’s not, but...” Thomas looked at the man. “Okay, we’ll figure that out later. I’m going to bring him inside, but can you get Patton? I don’t want to be alone with him if he turns out to be an axe murderer or something.”

“Yeah,” Roman said while carefully stepping off the porch. He glanced back at Thomas to see the human hooking his arms under the man’s shoulders and literally dragging him into the house. The centaur turned toward the barn and began to run as fast as he could toward it.

Hello @HildegardHope Detective Ira here, I have apparently stumbled upon your manuscript while searching for clues in the Devil’s Library, which is where I believe the ancient magical book of Toramu is hidden. Since I’m already here, I shall give my opinion on this piece of yours.

Though I have to say it is very strange that I should find your writing here……. hmmm…..

What I can see

Ooo this was very interesting! Now I know absolutely nothing about any of the works? movies? books? This is a fanfiction of, but I do know the story of Remus and Romulus. Not sure if it is related but it is an interesting overlay to have.

To start of this was a great first chapter! Then ending was a buildup, there was a twist about the body not actually being Thomas and then of course, being alive. Also very interesting to see centaurs and humans living together in what looks like harmony.

It's accepted and normal to have centaurs around and that is a very interesting setting. I am very curious to see how you worldbuild this. Do the centaurs have any special powers (besides the obvious)? Are they magical? What is the political situation like here? Religious situation? Lots to consider.

Another thing I really liked about the way you have written this is that you didn't go out and push into the readers face that they are centaurs it was something the reader had to realise for themselves as they read the story. The oh! moment is amazing and it is brilliant that you have written it in such a way. Well done!

Also interesting to see that they treat each other as equals, the human vs centaur conflict would be a very typical storyline and the fact that you are not going that way is really intriguing. Your dynamic here seems to suggest that they are allies and I'm interested to see how that plays out.

The setting is also modern, with phones and TVs and cars, very much not what I was expecting. But also a lot of potential to see how the modern world has adapted to accommodate centaurs, if they are pretty normal to have around.

Under the magnifying glass

One thing that jarred me after reading the story was the how in the starting Roman and Remus are sleeping... on a mattress.

They are half horse, I imagine it would be very tricky, not to mention uncomfortable, to sleep horizontally on a mattress. Would they not sleep standing up? Or have some sort of vertical half mattress contraption that they can stand below and rest their upper body on and sleep?

Not a big issue, just something that nagged at me after I finished reading.

Closing the case

Overall, this was a very interesting read and I am excited to read coming installments! Feel free to tag me if you are going to be making a taglist! :D

It was lovely going through this manuscript of yours. Everything expressed was my opinion, feel free to accept or reject whatever you want.

If you have any clues relating to the book of Toramu or anything you want to clarify feel free to contact my alias, ahem, my dear friend @canopy.

Until next time!!

“Yes, that bullet would have killed me if it weren’t for the eight pounds of ground beef that I keep in my breast pocket.”
—Philip Marlowe, “Death by a Thousand Beefthings,” by Raymond Chandler

Wow thanks so much for this review, its very indepth. To answer your questions, there is definitely human-centaur conflict. It is explored more in Anna's fic on A03, but the lowdown is that centaurs are treated as livestock and they have a bit of slavery issue going on. Thomas was part of a Centaur Rights group in highschool and is generally very against the mistreatment of centaurs, which is why he treats them as equals despite legally owning them. Its actually a very good fic and explores the moral/ethicality of Thomas owning the centaurs (something that he didn't want to do, because slavery, but ended up buying/fostering and adopting them due to the circumstances they were in previously) A major theme is that One Person can't stop slavery, and even if they outlawed slavery tomorrow, there would be the problem of all the people who hate centaurs, and the centaurs who can't read, or function in human society, and have no society of their own anymore, and the best thing One Person can do is make small changes within their purview and influence, and in the case of Thomas he ends up taking care of six centaurs with Troubled Pasts.

Funnily enough they aren't even centaurs in the original series, and there is no slavery, its an inside-out situation where each of the characters represent a different aspect of Thomas's personality.

As for Remus and Roman sleeping on a mattress, most of a centaurs organs are in their lower body, so their upper body, aside from their minor heart, lungs and stomach is basically empty and consists of pure muscle. centaurs can sleep standing up, but thats more for naps, they can also sleep completely laying down like horses do sometimes. but for the most part, they sleep with their legs tucked underneath them, and since their upper bodies are mostly muscle they just lock up and sleep with their upperbodies upright. Although, since centaurs do naturally sleep in groups they would lean on eachother. (i'm assuming some of this, but this was also talked about a bit in the original fic) Its also not like a spring mattress, more like a really thick eggcrate style cushion. They also have centaur sized beanbags, but those aren't for sleeping.

Thanks for the clarifications!

Hia! Since I liked the first story, I wanted to check out your next work immediately ^^

Hmmm I really feel like you’re not starting on the best paragraph here.
Just look at this “he was still sleeping. He wouldn’t be this still if he were awake” and then you continue talking about their wakeful habits…but it all feels so repetitive @.@

And bc of that, when you talk about when Remus will probably wake up 2 paragraphs later, I just get a bit irritated that we have not yet moved on from this topic @.@

In general, I wish you would tell us where we are and why the characters are doing what they are doing. There is no context. Why is the barn so important? Why is Thomas so important? Why do we hear about when each character wakes up but not why they are here? @.@

That said, the figure on the porch and the initial confusion is well-handled. Even if you also have repetitive words in there, the exciting situation glosses over that 😊

Is it not safe to drive bc of the on-going thunder storm?

After the initial troubles with repetitiveness where nothing of note really happened, I rly like how the chapter ended :3 It makes me want to read on to find out what is up with this new person. Why did Roman think this was Thomas at first? Makes me immediately think we are either dealing with time travel or different dimensions or a long-lost relative.
Also Centaurs! Always appreciated!
