World War Z by Max Brooks

by GrantBlayfur

(I didn't know what to rate this, but since the book is pretty graphic with the descriptions and language, I decided to rate it 16+ to discourage younger readers from picking it up. Hehe.)

Zombies have always been a favorite of mine, and a year ago when I heard about this book I knew I had to get it. But anyway, to the review...

PLOT: 9/10

Almostperfect, but not quite. When dealing with cannibalistic zombies it's hard to stray from the norm - the surviving humans fight back against the horde. However, Max combines dozens of different plots into one giant main-plot. All-in-all, a good plot, with an equal amount of entertaining and heart-twisting stories.

WRITING STYLE: 10/10

I was tempted to give this an 11/10, but then I decided that wouldn't be fair. Brooks writes in a unique style - interviews of survivors. This is probably the best part of the book, as their is a character nearly everyone can relate to. Crazed bodyguards, nerds, beauty queens, children, even an ex-vice president are all present. Brilliant!

DESCRIPTION: 10/10

Certain sections of this story still gives me nightmares. For instance, in one interview a soldier tells of how he watched as zombies bit off the face of one of his brothers. And, of course, the greusome details just leave you wanting more!

TOTAL: 29/30

An ABSOLUTE must read for anyone who is a fan of zombies. If you enjoy World War Z (which I'm sure you will), I recommend picking up the 'sequel': the Zombie Survival Guide, or the graphic novel version of the Guide. Both are a great way to waste away the hours.

Oh, well that changes things up a bit. Comic relief sprinkled in at appreciated moments is perfectly OK. :smt068 :smt027 :smt072

Goodness, I've been looking for that book everywhere. But then again, it's supposed to be written in a silly style from what I've heard. I personally don't think I'd like that. Perhaps I should just stick with World War Z. :smt102

For anybody who likes zombie related things, World War Z is a must read. I completely agree with the high ratings you gave it. Any flaws that the content of the book may have are overshadowed by the sheer brilliance of the zombie apocalypse.

I know, my weakness in reviews is rating too high...but trust me, this book is THAT GOOD!! I'm forcing some of my friends to read it, actually. And NO, I was NOT bribed by Max Brooks to give his book high ratings...'cough'

I want to read this book so bad! I read the zombie survival guide and really enjoyed it, and I've been dying to get my hands on WWZ. Your review only serves to fuel my desire to acquire the novel, by any means necessary. Heh, heh, heh...
However, looking back, I noticed that you gave the book incredibly good ratings. I mean, I haven't read it, but I have to question whether it's really as good as you say it is... though I definitely still want to read it!

Indeed, it is a very good zombie book. I loved every minute of it. The style that it was written in was so easy to devour. As gruesome as it was, it was one heck of an exciting roller coaster of a ride.
