Whispers of the Deep

by GengarIsBestBoy

Those who fear the ocean are wise to do so,

For it is a vast and unforgiving entity.

Those who sail the seas know to respect it,

As they realize the immense power it holds.

.

It is an enormous mass that throws itself onto the shores,

Eternally eating away at the place we call home.

Those on the coasts are always and forever at its mercy,

As just one strike could destroy an entire civilization.

.

We know next to nothing about the ocean,

With its unexplored regions that hold treacherous secrets.

Its deepest inhabitants are completely foreign to us,

Armed with jaws that rip and tentacles that tear.

.

Countless ships have been lost to the ocean,

Dragged to impossible depths and swallowed whole.

Was it the raging brewery of storms and waves,

Or unfathomable horrors that crave flesh and bone?

.

The ocean is a merciless and vengeful beast,

For it does not care how hard you fight.

It will fill your lungs and pull you to the abyss,

Where no one can hear you scream.

This is amazing because fear of the unknown is what makes the ocean so creepy. The fact that there's no way to actually explore all the ocean means there are some "monsters" that we could not even know exist.

"Countless ships have been lost to the ocean,

Dragged to impossible depths and swallowed whole.

Was it the raging brewery of storms and waves,

Or unfathomable horrors that crave flesh and bone?" I love the way you described the ship sinking by the ocean swallowing it whole. I saw that happening in my head

Hello, my favorite Pokemon

I really enjoyed reading this poem.
First of all, I think it's really interesting that you really took a deep dive into the treacherous parts of the Ocean. When I think of Ocean, I usually think of peaceful water with colorful fishes swimming around. Yet, as you mentioned in the poem, 'We know next to nothing about the Ocean, with its unexplored regions that hold treacherous secrets'. As human beings fear the unknown, I see how dangerous and intimidating the concept of 'ocean' could be.
I think the true fun behind reading poetry is being able to feel it with heart, not understanding with the mind. Your poem really made me feel the fear and uncertainty that comes up from the deep seawater.
One last thing,

"The ocean is a merciless and vengeful beast,

For it does not care how hard you fight.

It will fill your lungs and pull you to the abyss,

Where no one can hear you scream."

The line 'for it does not care how hard you fight' represents the helplessness of a drowning man in the ocean so well. The natural truly doesn't care how hard you fight because it will take your life in a single blow.
anyways, great job!

Hi there :D

I really liked how your poem doesn't seem to be about an abstract topic, yet you still managed to make it extremely engaging and found ways to help your readers immerse themselves using interesting descriptions!

It is an enormous mass that throws itself onto the shores

Armed with jaws that rip and tentacles that tear

Your personification when describing the ocean especially stood out and had an impact, as you created a really foreboding tone. When I read "armed" I immediately linked it to more human-related conflict such as war, and that somehow managed to resonate and evoke a great deal of emotion itself. For that reason, I appreciate that your imagery is more ambiguous even though it is describing a specific thing.

Throughout your entire poem you constantly mentioned and depicted the ocean as being bigger than humankind, that we have no power over it and also that we have barely touched its surface. In my opinion, this particularly engenders fear as we humans undoubtedly hate feeling of having no control over something, so good job on finding less explicit ways to connect to your readers' emotions.

Lastly, your ending was very strong and once again contributed to the feeling of helplessness by delineating the ocean as sinister and hostile for the final time.

Your writing was really refreshing to read, can't wait to see more from you~

It is quite eerie how we know more about Space than the ocean. The ocean is here, on Earth. Space is far away and yet…

I think that the midnight deep is the most unexplored. It’s the deepest part of the ocean, where I believe the angler fish resides. Maybe one day we’ll understand. But not for a very long time and maybe not even in our lifetime.

I wish you a lovely day and night.

Hi! This is a random weirdo here to review.

Okay, you just made me shiver. That last line... that last line...

The ocean is a merciless and vengeful beast,

For it does not care how hard you fight.

It will fill your lungs and pull you to the abyss,

Where no one can hear you scream.

Looks like I'm going to talk about the ending in the beginning. This wraps your poem up perfectly as the whole thing is saying how very cruel and scary the ocean is. The fact that you describe water filling your lungs and where it will take you is eerie enough, but in addition to that you created that last verse. I am thoroughly spooked, and it's a good thing I went on the vacation to the ocean a week ago and not tomorrow.

Was it the raging brewery of storms and waves,

Or unfathomable horrors that crave flesh and bone?

Flesh and bone? Flesh and bone? You sure know how to create a terrifying image... Yeah, I'm not going to sail on the ocean any time soon.

Your whole poem has lots of imagery and description that paints a perfect picture in my mind, which is hard to accomplish without boring the reader. But you did an excellent job keeping to the point while still making it interesting.

We know next to nothing about the ocean,

With its unexplored regions that hold treacherous secrets.

Its deepest inhabitants are completely foreign to us,

Armed with jaws that rip and tentacles that tear.

This is very true. We know more about space than we do most of the ocean, and that is quite a weird fact. We know less about our own world's oceans and most of it's creatures than we do of, say, mars, which we've never even been to. Most of the ocean is unexplored by humans, and reaching some of its depths prove to be a huge challenge.

I love this poem and all it's beautiful horrors. If I were you, I'd try to add some rhymes, because I feel a little lost without them. Though, I personally just love rhymes, and there are a ton of poems without them that are amazing. So, you do you!

Don't forget to keep writing!

Thanks foe the review! By the way, I prefer to write free-verse poetry without rhymes%u2014I just find it easier

OrabellaAvenue says...

Yeah I do that a lot too. I guess I just prefer rhyming, but I guess I shouldn't have mentioned that.. You can do you. Sorry for suggesting otherwise.

Good day! This is Ina aka loveissourgrapes and I am here to send a review/comment. It's funny how there are a lot of people in here that view the ocean and water differently. Some think it's scary, some think it's beautiful and some think it's both. For me, I think the water is both beautiful and calming but the more you think about it is actually scary. I don't know why it reminds me of the five men who went foolishly searching for the titanic boat deep down the ocean. It is now also one of my favorite poems of yours. This is like if under the sea from The Little Mermaid was realistic and way more creepy.

GengarIsBestBoy wrote:Those who fear the ocean are wise to do so,

The first two lines describe about the people who are afraid of the ocean but then, the last two lines describes about how sailors and seamen. You say that it is a wise decision to not make any contact with the ocean but the people who make contact with it should know how powerful it is. This stanza really does remind me about the five rich men. They died because they didn't have oxygen and they didn't know how powerful the ocean is for a man to handle.

This shows emotion and how fearful you are towards the ocean. In one strike or blow of the water's waves with the strong wind could destroy something big but weaker than it like a entire civilization. I like the description of "eternally eating". It's nice, hihi.

GengarIsBestBoy wrote:We know next to nothing about the ocean,

Under the ocean is a mystery. We try to explore what is under but we end up dead because it is a crazy place to find new things and to explore things. The last line seems like it could be expand into a stanza to describe more of what is under the ocean. Although, that might make the rating higher so I think it is perfect.

GengarIsBestBoy wrote:Countless ships have been lost to the ocean,

The descriptions tell how some people tried their best to fight the powerful waves of the ocean but then end up dead just like what I said. People's bodies are left buried down the ocean with or without flesh, just their bones. The descriptions are quite creepy so you could make it 12+ instead.

GengarIsBestBoy wrote:The ocean is a merciless and vengeful beast,

Where no one can hear you scream.

This seems cut to be the end of the poem. Maybe you could add you thoughts of how you think about the ocean lastly. After explaining what is the ocean is like, you could add that to make it feel complete. But this verse is good to be next to the end but not the end. Do you understand me? This a great description for like a horror poem.

Over all, the message is clear and great. The writing-style is okay too. Have wonderful day/night!
