This novel is based off upon my short story Head Case (http://www.youngwriterssociety.com/work.php?id=103168) which uses the same character and focuses on her background. This was a difficult piece to write and I apologise for any errors in my writing.
And thanks to Adam for helping me to come up with a novel title!

And to Afreen. I hope one day you will be able to read this. I miss you so much.
______________________________________________________________________________
It begins with a single dark and guilty thought at the back of your mind. The single dark and guilty thought jabs at you to grab your attention, then multiplies into a hundred, then into a thousand. The dark and guilty thoughts infest your mind, storming through every neurone in your brain and seize control of your emotions, the way you think and even your own actions.
Before you know it, you're having an episode.
You feel helpless and vulnerable, isolated from your loved ones. You run, desperately hoping to protect your friends and family from yourself, knowing that you will only lash out at them and hurt them. Locking yourself in your room without any sharp edged objects usually does the trick. If you have a major episode, although short in length, is deadly in impact and manipulation. You can't think straight and your mind and emotions are all over the place, broken and shattered.
I'm fucking worthless. I don't deserve to live. I should just fucking die...
The urge to self-harm is alarmingly powerful. The longing to grasp a blade in your hand, to feel the hard plastic grip with your fingers, to know that you're wielding so much power that is all focused on a tiny blade, a tiny blade that can end life with a single stroke. The longing to drag that blade across your skin, to feel the sharp pain as your skin is sliced open. To watch your blood slowly well and ooze from the newly made cut as your emotions take control...
Lying on your bed with tears running down your cheeks and twisting the bed covers beneath you with your fingers is the best you can do to prevent yourself from wreaking havoc. The whole world is against you, bearing a massive weight upon your shoulders. Everyone despises you, sees you as nothing. Even your own family. You watched them as they turned their backs on you, one by one, ignoring your frantic pleas for help and forgiveness. Why are they doing this to you? What have you done to deserve this? Looking back at your past, you realise that you've achieved nothing but hurting people, damaging them and lashing out at them when they tried to reach out to you. You're nothing but a monster: someone who deserves this hatred and hurt. You even hate yourself. You are of less value to other people than the dirt off the back of their shoes.
If you have a minor episode, you are more fortunate. Although they tend to last longer in length than a major episode, no violence or thoughts of suicide and self-harm are included. Instead, you are numb to the very core and your body is seemingly paralysed, heavy and pinned down by an unknown alien weight. All colours in this world have been washed away, their precious pigments seemingly lost forever. Shades of grey replace the lost pigments, transforming this once colourful world into a bleak and monotone landscape.
All I see is a world torn by war...
You are emotionless and numb, weighed down by the horrors of this world. You gaze out into this world and all you can see is a world filled with mass destruction and death. The cries of soldiers as they lie dying on the battlefield, the ratting of gunfire and the explosions of grenades.Faces of nameless people come to mind; children, men, women, all bearing the same ragged and torn faces, their eyes black with never ending swallowing depths, and glazed over without a single sign of life. No matter how much you scream and thrash, these faces will not leave your mind. Nor will the lost colours of the world return and bring back their familiar warmth. Remember, this is a war that you were once being trained for.
All around you is a war torn world and genocide. You feel nothing but deep shame and guilt for the war crimes your country has committed. You look back at the Boer Wars, knowing that it was your country that set up the concentration camps. The concentration camps that lead to the deaths of so many innocent young children and thousands of deaths. You feel nothing but deep shame for what your country did to all those people. The slave trade that your country took part in without a single thought for what hell and pain they were about to drag innocent men, women and children through...
What place do you have in this world? Why do you live? You are nothing more than a reminder of the shame, the shameful actions your ancestors committed. It is your responsibility to carry this burden of shame and war guilt for the rest of your life once it is finally passed down to you.
It is then that your episode begins to end. The urge to self-harm and the suicidal thoughts start to dwindle. The hatred and rage towards the world and yourself lessens eventually shatters. Sense floods through your mind and you start to feel disgusted by the very thoughts of self-harming. The flow of the tears stems as the dark thoughts slow their racing through your mind. Then slowly, slowly, they begin to lessen and weaken until they at last dissolve.
The colours of the world slowly and gradually start to return, their seemingly lost pigments filling the shades of grey that were once in the pigments' places. The haunting and torn faces of the nameless dead people fade one by one, blending once more into the horizon. Your emotions come rushing back, flooding into your veins and throughout your body and taking over paralysing numbness. The rush of your once stolen emotions is a sweet and relieving feeling, so relieving that you cry, not with sorrow, but with happiness and solace, knowing that your episode has finally come to an end. The seemingly indestructible bars of the iron cage that ensnared you begin to melt away, giving you the final and true freedom from the episode. The alien weight that once bore down on you lifts and you are no longer trapped in your torment.
You are finally free of the episode and torment. You want to dance and shout with joy, but this freedom is short lived. Sooner or later in a few days' time, this freedom will once again be wrenched from your grasp as you are once again trapped by your dark thoughts and forced to endure another half an hour of pure hell and agony.
Welcome to my world.

Heggo! This is me introducing myself!

I love the honesty in your work: 'You feel helpless and vulnerable...' You communicate directly with the reader and they immediately understand what you mean because you've chosen apt vocabulary such as: 'I don't deserve to live. I should just fucking die...'
This helps make the piece so relatable.
Hmmm... the only thing I would say could possibly improve this piece would be to vary the length of your sentences somewhat. The structure is good and clear but some shorter sentences could be used for impact.
The best line in the whole piece: 'Welcome to my world.' So personal, so heartfelt, I loved it!
Good job, can't wait to read more.
~you know who.
Hi there, Rebel here to review!
You tackled a very sensitive subject that seems to be going on the rise, and I feel like you completely nailed what most people who have attempted self-harm and suicide feel like. I have a few friends who have attempted suicide, and you basically wrote what they said.
Your beginning paragraph really drew me in. It's extremely important to have a strong opening sentence (or paragraph), and you did a fantastic job. What I liked best is that you kept on going strong even after your starting paragraph.
I really don't have anything negative to say here. I think you did a great job. Keep writing!
Hi there! Noelle here for a Review Day review!

I saw your newest chapter in the Green Room so I figured I would stop by and read all the previous chapters before I read that one. So here I am!
Alrighty, let's get this party started!
Phew. That's some powerful stuff there man. Great way to kick off your prologue. I'm always harping about having great opening lines in order to pull in your readers. This is an amazing opening paragraph. Just...wow. If this sets the tone for the rest of the story, I can't wait to read it.
Okay, so the rest of this definitely did the first paragraph justice. You just moved on from one powerful moment to another. It's amazing how you were able to relay all of these feelings to me. I truly felt like I was going through these episodes. And to be completely honest, you had me almost at tears halfway through this. That's how powerful your words were.
Seriously, I have nothing negative to say about this piece at all. The only thing that could be remotely compared to something negative is this:
I really hate ellipsis. It's just a pet peeve of mine. You should just have a period here instead. An ellipsis is used to say that thought is going to continue. This thought didn't really continue, it just hung there. So personally, I would've put a period here instead of an ellipsis.
This is really, truly brilliant. I enjoyed reading every word of this. Now I'll be moving on to the first chapter. It's got a lot to live up to
Keep writing!

Hi, I'm going to review this wonderful piece of work today.
I'd like to start off by saying how beautiful you write. It's like listening to a captivating speaker when all you did was write. The voice in this is spot on and impassioned and interesting and completely worth my time.
The topic is hard to write about, considering how provocative it is, but I think you did a great job of capturing the essence of self-deprecation, self-harm, and emotional instability. The descriptions of the emotion and the reactions to that emotion are incredibly detailed and the words you chose to explain that are fantastic and certainly accomplish the feat. Also, because of the excellent word choice, the entire chapter has great flow and ease.
Another thing I enjoyed about this is the organization. It starts out with the beginning of the episode and explains what happens step-by-step until the episode is over. I think it's also great that the final paragraph before the last line serves to establish the repetition and particular torment that the main character is describing and why it is so hindering and obstructive.
The last thing I'll say is that the entire thing was in second person, and yet it was all turned into first with that very last line and I think that's just about genius. Keep writing, please, you are absolutely amazing at it.
Sincerely, Dianne.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is very well written. Your words flow very nicely and build upon each other to create an image.
I wan't you to know you have made a great achievement (at least in my terms.)
I have this thing about self harm and suicide, and usually stop reading something as soon as it alludes to it, however I kept reading, even though I was frustrated at first when I got to the second half I am glad I had kept reading it rather than just giving up on it.
The very first paragraph:
Well done, captivating, just a little too repetitive sometimes. You keep reading 'the single dark and guilty though' which is ALOT to repeat, perhaps just repeat a shortened version of it.
In the content I am confused what or who the narrator is. At first it seems something like a troubled teen, then it skips to war. Old wars too. I am confused at the time setting, if the narrator is s shell shocked soldier, or just someone very philosophical who thinks about war alot and feels responsible for his or her own countries actions. I think this is one part that really needs some clearing up. The whole internal thought type thing is working well, but even if you just included a date and location, or one line of who this person could be, it will help.
Another thing I have to say is well done well done. You pulled off second person incredibly well! It was seamlessly written and flowed well that I didn't even notice it was in second person until I went back and noticed. Clap clap!
The final line does kill the second person, but of course its logical, however "welcome to my word" is one of the biggest cliche's out there. Maybe take a look at that.
Well done, I enjoyed this!
One more thing I have to add is a question for you to ask yourself, since I do not know what chapter one contains. Ask yourself "Why is this a prolouge instead of chapter one? What makes it necessary to be that way?"
Anyway, good job.
Hello there!
Here to represent the red team on this amazing review day! I will provide the most scrumptious review sandwich that you have ever seen/gobbled up.
First things first the things I liked;
I love your opening paragraph. It's clear, well written and intriguing. I particularly like the line, “The single dark and guilty thought jabs at you to grab your attention, then multiplies into a hundred, then into a thousand.”
This has got me very interested and I love the way you write!
And now onto the constructive criticism;
Paragraphs. I think some of them are a little long – along with your sentences. Throw a few short ones of both in there to spice it up a little! It can look a little daunting to read, especially for a prologue.
Good luck! I also love the title.
