I write because
I can.
After all, why not love what you can do
because you can do it
while you can do it?
Why should I wait?
I write because
my thoughts can’t be contained in only my head,
they beg to stretch their legs
and run around the hilly,
wild world.
I write because nothing I can do
will ever contain those thoughts;
they skip laps around my life
and cartwheel around
my soul.
I write because
though the letters are yours
and the words are yours,
they speak for me.
I write because
it is a way of untangling my thoughts,
my thoughts that are like a slippery, knotted string--
they will come loose with a tug
on the end of the line,
but it has to be a powerful tug,
a magnetic force of inspiration.
I write because
it is a way to live
without leaving the house and
a way to let love loose
while it grows.
I don’t really write.
Writing writes me.

hmm. I liked two things in this poem. The first is the way you tie abstract ideas to images. It makes it your own and original and is nice and refreshing to read. The second is the clarity. This poem exemplifies a way of writing that makes sense in a sentence structured way. Which, is sometimes hard to find on this site. Congratulations on that but I do have concerns about other things in this poem that deserve a thought or two by you.
The first is this feeling that parts of this poem lies flat, while other parts are lively and dancing around with imagery. The first stanza I dislike because for one it is completely abstraction. It seems dull and lazy. And also, the whole first stanza didn't say much for your passion to write, either. Olympic runners don't run JUST because they can? They run because they get a "high" feeling or because they have drive and motivation to be successful or they have a need to express themselves by what they do.
Secondly, I don't like your repetition and redundancy. This is really two things. Your redundancy is feeling like you are saying the same thing in different ways. Your second stanza says the same thing twice and just tells us using different examples and it seems sloppy. Alot of this poem seems like it could be said in a better way aswell but that would be a different topic of debate. The repetition of "I write because" seems unnecessary and ineffective to me. I usually only like repetition when using it caters to something emotional. Here, it aides the last stanza and makes it more powerful but I don't see it as helping the whole poem.
What I think would be better is if this poem explains it using a different approach. It would take out all the abstraction and only leave the lively words and images. That would mean starting at "My thoughts cannot be contained in my head" and moving literally downward with a few POWERFUL ways of which you really feel makes people understand a dedication and passion to writing.
Thank you for writing though, it is a good poem.
Thank you!
YOU ARE SO EPIC IT MAKES ME CRY SOMETIMES
OMG YOU'RE SO NICE AND PRETTY AND EVERYTHING
Me too!
love this.
Thank you so much!(:
This was beautiful. I don't think I've ever read a poem that expresses the feelings of not just me, but also the author. I can see the passion in your words, and I can relate to it as well.

The last two lines are so true. As a teenage girl, I can say that in some of my darkest hours, instead of harming myself, and putting edges to skin, I have put my pen to paper and created magic. Then I posted on here. Knowing that other writers here on YWS felt similar pain was a great help. I feel safe when I'm writing. And writing isn't just a hobby. As you explain in the second to last stanza, it's a way to live.
If you had any errors, I wasn't looking. I didn't notice. Because for the first time, I was more caught up in how beautiful your poem is, and how beautiful it makes me feel, that the passion took over. I wasn't focused on technical errors just as how in a song, if it's something you feel, you don't notice a bad note. So thank you for writing this lovely poem.
I can say absolutely nothing negative about this. Definitely keep writing! I look forward to seeing what else you can come up with

Thank you so much!(: haha I can't stop smiling. I'm so glad you liked it.
and I'm so glad my writing can have that sort of effect. :3
This really is beautiful.
Thank you so much!(:
i really like this
i can relate to this highly because that's what i do with writing as well.
and like the last 2 lines "i don't really write. Writing writes me." is practically the same in myself. It naturally kinda flows out onto the paper or on the screen depending on where i'm putting it all. And i know many other people can say that as well. I really like how you explain what writing is for you and what i see is how much it means to you because of how much you let your feelings flow into it. nice job
Thank you!(: I'm so glad to hear that you like those last two lines; I actually almost took them out. :3 and I'm glad you can relate!
Thank you! :3
