Slayer (Chapter Two)

Hey guys...

So, this is chapter two. Thanks to everyone who commented on the first. It seems what everyone thought was the biggest problem was that it was rushed, which I kind of knew writing it. I showed it to friends and they all said it could use some more detail, too. It’s kind of a problem that I have- my humanities teacher saw that and put me in like a lunch time writing thing at my school for people who need to work on detail, so I’m working on it :D

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I finally came to my senses and stumbled backwards at the last minute, my feet barely able to grip at the cold tile floor. Even though vampires are fast, they have horrible reflexes and I think they may be a little slow in the brain, too (They have the same mental level as zombies. Wait, scratch that- They are basically the exact same as zombies except with a blood lust). The thing’s hands closed on the air where I had been standing seconds before and it stared at its hands, looking almost as if it were trying to think. I didn’t waste the chance. I turned and ran, making it to the back door. My sweat-coated hands fought to find a grip on the metal doorknob. Eventually I got outside and closed the door behind me, looking around frantically for something-anything- that I could use against the pursuing monster. It was only seconds later that I heard the thing throwing itself into the door, trying to find a way out. I guess it couldn’t find one, so it smashed the window and started climbing through, sliding right over the shards of shattered glass unharmed.
I kept running until I came to my gardens. I was extremely lucky and thankful- I had used wooden stakes to put my rabbit fence around the vegetables. I ripped out the staples that held the metal fence to one of the stakes (ignoring the fact that the staples cut my fingers) and turned around with the weapon in my hands just in time to hit the thing in the head. Hard.
It stumbled back a few feet, but kept coming at me as if I had just pushed him a little. Any human would have been unconscious after the blow I delivered, but it just kept coming. I pulled the stake back and pushed it forward into the vampire’s chest. It fell backwards onto its butt and ripped the wood out of its chest as if it were little more than an annoying sliver, starting back to its feet. My rushed stab had missed its mark. And now the vampire had a sharp wooden weapon. Luckily, it was too stupid to realize this and threw the stake to the side before closing in on me. It grabbed my arm. I ripped free, but its fingernails left huge scratches across my arm. I stumbled out of the fence and onto the front lawn, gripping my arm. The thing’s stupid nails were big and they had gone deep. I gently ran my fingers over the cut and looked down at my blood covered finger.
I felt something hit my back, and I went down onto my stomach, my breath rushing out of me. I rolled over to see the vampire standing over me, its fangs slowly slipping out of their hiding place to prepare for breakfast. I wanted to close my eyes, but couldn’t. I was frozen in fear. I was still getting my breath back, so there was no point in even trying to run.
Then, a miracle. A strike of luck that probably saved my life.
The sun broke over the hills, flooding the yard with light and chasing away any shadows that remained. The vampire didn’t hiss like so many stories claim that they do. It didn’t turn to dust. It didn’t collapse into a pile of ashes and clothes. Its body fell over on top of me. I pushed it off and crawled away. It was dead, I knew, but that didn’t mean I was comfortable with having it touching me.
I gasped for air and stared at the body in complete shock. Shocked at how lucky I was. Shocked that the vampire had come out so close to morning. Shocked that it had somehow gotten past all of my protections. Shocked that I had been so close to losing. Shocked at how close I had been to becoming one of the walking dead that I had given my life to destroying.
But most of all, shocked that I had missed.
I never missed.
It just didn’t happen.
I had done many things to build up my aim. Was it possible that in my fear I had missed? I had thought that I had trained myself better. Every other slaying I had preformed I had been ready for every move it made- I would know every step they would make before they made them, every punch they would throw- I would have complete control over what was going on. I even had some fun with them before I killed them sometimes. But with icy adrenaline rushing through my veins I had missed, showing that there was still a lot of work to be done.
And I didn’t just get up, wipe myself off, walk away, and call it a day. Tears erupted from my eyes like lava out of a volcano. I guess I should be relieved that no police just happened to be strolling the neighborhood at this point because they would have seen me sprawled out on my front laws with tears pouring from my eyes, my hands and arm coated with blood, my window smashed, a bloody stake in my backyard, and the body of a probably missing person lying feet from where I was having a breakdown.
I did eventually realize how bad it would look to anyone passing by, so I made myself drag the body into my house, trash the stake, and clean up the glass. When I was done, I went back to the closet where I had thrown the body.
What I was going to do with it, I had no idea. I had nowhere where I could safely burn it, and having a long, body-sized garbage bag in with my trash would probably look suspicious. I could just leave it in the closet until it broke down, or until I figured out something better to do with it. Deciding that that was pretty much my best (and only) option at the moment, I threw a couple air fresheners in with the vampire and closed the door.
I called the window company and told them that I had slipped and managed to break my window. I described it as a horrible accident in which I slipped on my too-long pyjama-pants and had thrown the stone knick-knack I had been holding onto through the window. Luckily only a few pieces of the shattered window had hit my arm. The story was kind of not-very-believable, but it was all I could come up with and it explained why my arm and fingers were cut up.
Even though the sun was bright out, and made sure to place some garlic inside and outside of the window, just in case. Then, satisfied with my job of cleaning up the scene, I went back to breakfast. The toast was so burnt that I guess I was lucky it hadn’t caught fire, and the coffee was garbage. I threw the eggs and milk back into the fridge and grabbed my phone, deciding that making breakfast was just too much work and I might as well just order in a pizza instead. That is, if a pizza place was open that early.
I found one that was and relaxed on the couch in front of the TV. I was still on edge from the frightening experience and kept looking over my shoulder, reminding myself every few minutes to put a stake in every room, just in case.
This kind of sounds like the end, but it isn’t! More excitement is yet to come!
So please tell me what you think of this one compared to last.
Thank you, my undead friendsies. :)
Hey DD! Thanks for the PM! I would have missed this otherwise.
I wouldn't worry too much about the description. It will improve, definitely. I just looked over a bunch of stuff I did a while back and it was aw-ful. So actually, you're doing pretty good here.
I got really caught up in this. I was expecting something most others would do if they had this idea. I was expecting the vampire to be an intelligent guy who wanted a)to talk or b)get help or c) help your MC kill others of its kind. Your chase I was not expecting. Thumbs up for that.
I've one question, though. If they're as zombie-like as you said, how come the public haven't realised there are blood-thirsty monsters running around brainlessly killing people?
Good job on the description for the chase. I was imagining something from 28 Days Later after your MC. Is that the effect you wanted?
I finally came to my senses and stumbled backwards at the last minute #FF4000 ">Would "second" sound better? It gives me more of an impression of a tiny amount of time. love this line. C:
The vampire didn’t hiss like so many stories claim that they do. It didn’t turn to dust. It didn’t collapse into a pile of ashes and clothes. Its body fell over on top of me. I pushed it off and crawled away. It was dead,
Then what about the sunlight caused it to die? Normally the whole sun-burns-the-flesh-away is what kills 'em.
I gasped for air and stared at the body in complete shock. Shocked at how lucky I was. Shocked that the vampire had come out so close to morning. Shocked that it had somehow gotten past all of my protections. Shocked that I had been so close to losing. Shocked at how close I had been to becoming one of the walking dead that I had given my life to destroying.
But most of all, shocked that I had missed.
I understand you wanted all the "shocked"s for impact, but towards the end of the paragraph I did get a little annoyed with all of 'em.
As I said, this was good. I want to read more and see where this is going. And I see you've already posted the next chapter. My advice would be to wait a couple of days before posing the following chapter. It gives people time to notice and review your story, otherwise there'd be millions of chapters and that can put people off. I do want to read more, but you want people to spend time reviewing each chapter rather than just the latest and ignoring the others.
Well, that's my two cents. Everything's just a suggestion, by the way. Don't feel like you have to change things. Most of what people will tell you is wrong - that's my cynical view anyway. C:
Happy writing!
