Do you know what it feels like to lose your brother?
I wished I didn't, mine died in a freak accident that left his body in pieces. We had his funeral without the body, because we could only find parts of his limbs. It was sad like any other funeral would be, it left my poor family in pieces just as he was. Although I didn't shed a single tear, my heart had a hole in it. I wondered if I could laugh again without him being by my side, what really got me was that he died doing what he loved, ...Gears. No, not the ones that you see in old clocks that link together, or the ones that are put on people to protect themselves, but Gears as in enhancements of the human body. In 2077, a woman invented a tool that meddled with your body to form a defense. (ironicly a weapon to protect yourself) They all look different, every single one are different. You can't mass produce that many different types, so she personally pieced together each one. As many as she made, she was just one person. So the number of Gears were limited, but she was announced the einstein of biological science.
Unsurprisingly, she ended up becoming a trillionare by selling one Gear to every country of the world. Even her home country didn't recieve any special treatment, which got them quite angry. Even so, Gears were thought to be a leap in bio-science. Naturally, the countries began to run tests on the Gears to try to make more of them, (although all of them would never admit it), but they soon found out that they couldn't. The Gears were way too complicated to replicate, since every single Gear was different, they couldn't trade notes with other countries to see if they found out how to rebuild it. But that wasn't even the most stressful part about the Gears, the worst and most frustrating problem about Gears was that they could only be used by people that were 18 or younger.
Now, it's been a year since the "Great Discovery" was made, and they already have a school specially made for people from around the world. I am transfering in to fulfill my brother's Will. Yes, my brother's, he wanted me to attend this school as his last request. Stupid right?, because he died from the same thing. To be completely honest, I fully hated Gears with all my heart. Yet, here I was, going to the school for kids that all had the reason my brother died. Of course, I had it too, I couldn't attend this school if I didn't have a Gear. That's where my brother thought ahead, he somehow got a hold of a real Gear. It was in his Will's envelope actually, it looked like a black bracelet. With nothing to disiguish it from some old bracelet you'd usually buy from a quarter machine that your little sister/brother begged you to spend a quarter on. I stared at it as the train rocked back and forth slightly, my bagage was under my fancy leather cushion seat. I had been traveling for about a week now, with only a man wearing all black to guide me.
He had traveled with me from start to finish, making me follow him everywhere he went. He wouldn't let me out of his sight, even when I was using the bathroom. He barely talked at all and told me to call him Max, (which didn't fit his character at all). We were on the last train to the Academy. Compared to all the other trains we had been on, this one was the most...considerate. There were maid-like women that served us constantly, they left Max alone most of the time but focused on me even more. They asked if I needed anything every five minutes which drove me to become less patient. I wasn't used to all this so I told them to stop coming into the trally unless called for, after the first hour. I killed time by playing with my camera that I brought and snapped pictures of the amazing veiws I got from outside. Mountain ranges surrounded us almost as if they were man made.
The school couldn't be too far by now, I thought as I sat down from taking another picture. I glanced at the door of the trally, almost expecting a maid to pop out right then. But fortunently, they were as obedient as they were annoying.
"We're here," Max's deep slow voice woke me up with a jolt. I yawned as he grabbed his bags off the ground, the train had stopped without a sound. That was probably the reason why it didn't wake me up earlier. We were the only ones on the train, so we didn't have much of a problem rushing out the train. The view of the school itself was breath stealing, crisp white blocks with a tint of blue. It could've been the cloudless sky reflecting off the building though. There were four main buildings on campus, a main school with the classes located there, a girls and boys dorm,(separate buildings of course), and a black dome like building which was the most odd out of the four. "I must part ways with you now, someone will meet you here so wait, goodbye," Max said as he turned around coldly. "Alright, see you...well, take care," I said to the guy who I had been stuck with all this time. He left me in the middle of a concrete pathway without another word.
A few minutes later, I was approached by a girl wearing a bright blue gown. She had wide wire glasses that gave her a certain innocent look, her light brown hair was cut to her mid-back and was braided evenly. "Hello! Could you be the someone I'm looking for?" her small yet clear voice asked. "Umm, yeah I guess..." I answered relunctantly.
"What's your name mister?"she asked timidly.
"Logan,...Logan Scott,"
Amazing, I loved it! Its full of funny things, and the beginning is very sad. The Gear is a little confusing. But I liked this story. Its cool.
AMAZING start! the very beginning got my blood boiling for more. also, you started with a great hooker. i hope you post more of this book, because it seems it would be something i would simply LOVE to read. there were very few grammatical errors. at the end there was a , instead of a . but other than that, your start was awesome. also, you might want to describe the main character a bit more, and descripe his surroundings a bit? ex. where he lives, and such. other than that though, this is an awesome start, and i will be sure to read more of them.
