In the realm of stereotypes, I reside,
As the gay best friend, with flair and pride.
But behind the glitter and the laughter's embrace,
There's a struggle, a journey, I must face.
A confidant, a shoulder to lean,
But sometimes, my own struggles remain unseen.
Expected to be fabulous, vibrant, and fun,
Yet, deep inside, battles are silently spun.
Invisible tears masked by a smile,
Yearning for acceptance, all the while.
Judged by a caricature, confined by a mold,
My identity reduced, a story untold.
The pressure to conform, to fit the role,
To play the sidekick, but hide my soul.
My heart's desires, hidden from view,
Longing for acceptance, just to be true.
I yearn to be seen beyond the stereotype,
For my complexities and depth, a chance to ignite.
To break free from the boxes that confine,
Unveiling the layers, beyond the shine.
The struggle to find love, amidst the crowd,
Yearning for a connection, deep and profound.
Yet often reduced to a token, a novelty,
My heartache and longing dismissed so casually.
But within the struggle lies a strength untold,
A spirit that refuses to be controlled.
I rise above, embracing who I am,
Defying expectations, breaking the dam.
For I am more than just a stereotype's gaze,
A kaleidoscope of emotions, in a world ablaze.
With resilience and courage, I forge my own way,
Illuminating the path, where authenticity holds sway.
So let's peel back the layers, see what's within,
Embrace the struggles, where growth begins.
Let's celebrate the richness, the joy, the strife,
And honor the complexities of a colorful life.
For the struggles I face, both seen and concealed,
Are reminders of the strength they've helped to build.
As the stereotypical gay best friend, I'll transcend,
With authenticity and love, until the very end.

"In the realm of stereotypes, I reside,

As the gay best friend, with flair and pride.
But behind the glitter and the laughter's embrace,
There's a struggle, a journey, I must face." I love the rhythm and the way this sounds. It rhymes perfectly and illustrates the stereotypes perfectly. And I must say you also illustrate how hard it is for you in these few lines."
"A confidant, a shoulder to lean,
But sometimes, my own struggles remain unseen.
Expected to be fabulous, vibrant, and fun,
Yet, deep inside, battles are silently spun.
Invisible tears masked by a smile,
Yearning for acceptance, all the while." From these lines I see that people have expectations for you to be flamboyant and fun and sometimes forget that even though you're the gay best friend you're also a person who has struggles too. That makes me sad I'm sorry.
"Judged by a caricature, confined by a mold,
My identity reduced, a story untold.
The pressure to conform, to fit the role,
To play the sidekick, but hide my soul." The fact that you feel diminished as a person because people just see you as gay was worded perfectly here. Along with the way it rhymes and flows this was a beautiful verse.
"My heart's desires, hidden from view,
Longing for acceptance, just to be true." Again, you reiterate the fact that you're hidden and invisible and that what you want and feel don't matter.
"I yearn to be seen beyond the stereotype,
For my complexities and depth, a chance to ignite.
To break free from the boxes that confine,
Unveiling the layers, beyond the shine." You want to shine other than being the flamboyant best friend. What else are you good at? What other ways can you be a good friend? Cleverly worded again rhyming and flowing perfectly.
"The struggle to find love, amidst the crowd,
Yearning for a connection, deep and profound." Wow, i didn't think about this. Good illustration on this concept.
overall this poem was amazing. And i definitely think you have really good talent as a writer. You write feelings and words so beautifully and you paint a picture in the mind that plays like a movie. AMAZING JOB. I decided to only comment on partial because i didn't want to inconvenience you with a novel as a review
This poem is flowing and vibrant and rhyming and rhythmic! Well done! Your word choice is excellent and the basic message of the poem is clear! Now here's where I'm a little stumped: there seems to be a contradiction in this poem, and I'm curious to know if it's purposeful. The poem discusses how the person feels simplified by a stereotype they don't feel they fit into. The person longs for deeper understanding, less shallow friendships, and something closer to a true friendship. All kinds of people can identify with this message, but the person specifically blames the "gay best friend" stereotype for barring them from true, deep friendship. And then you realize that the poem itself, because nothing else does, defines the person as a "gay best friend." It's the person's own words that bring the stereotype onto them. In fact, at the end of the poem, the most we actually know about the person is that they are gay and black. Like this person's whole identity is the stereotype they claim to want to escape.
Weird. Am I thinking to much, or was that intended? I feel it has a crucial message regardless: people often cling to the branding they form with the world, no matter how much they feel the urge to complain about it.
I agree with you. I really like this poem which has a special topic.uno online
Hello there! This is loveissourgrapes and I am here to give you a short review/comment about your poem. Kind of tired so I am going to make this really quick. I see a lot of new young writers posting writings about being a gay friend hehe. It is good that you have brought the message straightforward and frank. It is also good that each two lines which are paired together are well rhymed. Kind of reminds me of "Let It Go" from Frozen. Overall, it is great. Have a great day/night and welcome to YWS!
