Pascal
CHAPTER 2
‘How you feeling, hun?’ Pascal could hear his mother’s voice, and a subtle, yet rhythmic “bleep – bleep” noise coming from his right side. He slowly opened his eyes to see his feet under a bland white sheet, with the bare tips of his toes revealed. He looked around the room, seeing his mother sitting on a seat with his school bags by her side. There was a large machine on the opposite side that was recording his heart beat and blood pressure making the “beeping” noises.
A curtain was drawn around the section of the room, and then he spotted Dan and Valarie step in from behind the curtain.
‘Wh – where am I?’ Pascal said weakly.
‘You’re in the hospital, dear,’ his mother said to him softly.
‘Yeah, that idiot of a girl POUNDED you to bits and –‘ Dan stopped in the middle of his sentence to a quick yet powerful glare of Mrs. Jones, along with a stamp on the foot from Valarie to go along with it.
It was only till then that Pascal realised he had a thick, white, thoroughly bandaged tape wrapped several times, tightly, around his forehead.
‘Is this – ‘ Pascal pointed to his forehead and Valarie nodded.
‘Not to…upset you, but when you…exclaimed your opinion in an immense volume, Ross heard you and, well, expressed her anger from your quote, with her fist, to your forehead,’
‘She’s a down – right dirty nugget,’ Mrs. Jones mumbled.
Just then, the sound of the creaky, old door that was just behind his curtains creaked open. It was the doctor that was in charge for Pascal’s recovery. In his clutch was a strange mechanism, which looked like the head of a vacuum cleaner. The doctor was a friendly, trustworthy looking man.
‘Wha – what’s –‘ Dan was startled at the tool, appearing even more anxious than Pascal, and he was the one having treatment, and whatever was about to come next.
‘Oh, this?’ the doctor pointed at the apparatus. His voice was deep and harmonizing, like those really professional narrators you get on old super - hero cartoons.
‘This is a special device that will be plugged into a machine and will X – Ray his forehead, or any other part of his body, and we would be able to see his brain and any damage in this screen right here,’ the doctor then pointed at a little screen that belonged to another large machine being wheeled into the curtains by an wrinkly, grouchy looking nurse, that personally to Pascal, looked slightly dodgy.
‘Freda, pass the –‘ The doctor stopped in his sentence and suddenly held onto his stomach. ‘Oh No –‘
Pascal caught a glimpse of the nurse, Freda, and noticed she had given him a suspicious look, grinding her teeth, widening her eyes and a light tap of the foot onto the cold, marble floor.
‘Excuse me one seCON – ‘ the doctor couldn’t finish his sentence, and before he knew it, he was gurgling thick foam through his mouth and nostrils and ran out of the room, clenching tight onto his neck, Freda walking seemingly calm, out to follow him.
Like earlier on, a familiar silence filled the room, with all of them exchanging baffled looks with one another. Then Dan was the first to break the awkward quiet.
‘What the heck?!’ Dan blurted.
‘I – I don’t know what to say,’ Mrs. Jones spoke out.
‘Is this a JOKE?’ Valarie and Pascal said the same quote aloud at the same time.
‘Ahaha, that was strange,’ Valarie giggled, but rolled off into even more suspicion that before.
‘Quite…’ Pascal hummed in a very curious tone.
Just then, an extremely tall man came through the door, wearing a sort of hood and a long flowing coat. Everything was coloured grey, and the hood was shading his features – and they had absolutely no idea who this was.
‘Am I in the presence of Lord – Lor- Looorrrr –‘
A loud delay of slow motion filled Pascal’s ears. Everything started to slow down … turn fuzzy … then transparent … and fade… fade …
Everything started to fall down … things were going shorter … shrinking … and then –
BANG! A horrendous pain flowed over the tip of Pascal’s head. As he lifted his head, that felt as if it took much more effort to look up than usual, he recognized a cold, hard surface coloured white with tiny grey speckles, that were morphed into large squares with the separation borders of small lines of cement going round each one …
What he was looking at was … The Ceiling.
A deafening twanging noise like a television with no signal, on full volume blast, was blasting out from somewhere, into his ears. He couldn’t tell where it was coming from. He tried to tilt his head, along with more straining effort, to look back down again.
He felt like he was underwater – the strange murkiness, no ability to hear anything but like the ears of a whale, and the gravity pressuring down on him … pressure … pressure …
Though looking down was a tough process, he finally managed to catch a glimpse that – things had definitely not grown shorter … he was floating! Floating like a gas balloon that had hit the ceiling and bouncing off wall to wall.
Things weren’t so fuzzy now either, and his hearing had cleared up fully. Unfortunately, he had drifted off all the way to the opposite side of the room, and the curtains were now blocking the bed, Valarie, his mother, Dan and the Mystery Man.
Then, a thought struck him. “Am I … FLYING?!” He realised that if he was, he should figure out how to steer left and right, and move back and forth.
