Oh Tainted Blood

The way you look at me

Thinking blood means legacy.

Blood of Germany,

Blood of Jews,

Blood of Vikings too-

Blood does not define me, nor my view.

Im not a Nazi

Because of Germany's past.

Im not obsessed with money

Just because of Im Jewish at last.

Im not a brute of striking

Because Im a Viking by blood.

You say "Nazi" because of Germany

But I am not defined by blood's decree.

you say "brute" because of Viking lore,

But this is not what i stand for.

You say "unjust" by the Jewish name.

Is that how you see my inner flame?

Use words with care before you speak;

Words can make integrity weak.

Your words taint my blood.

Your words cause my heart to flood.

Do not search me for ethnicity.

Search me for personality.

Search for my name.

Not a country.

Blood is not my legacy.

I wrote this because I people keep stereotyping me into a group of people, automatically thinking I have the same mindset then if I have this blood.
But that's not true and I hope this poem conveyed this.

Whether you are intentionally labeling a person into a country's or group's known evil or it is unintentional (meaning someone overhead what you said and was hurt by this), your words have consequences and do not go weightless.

Blood does not define a person bcs a country or people did something immoral or unethical or horrible or whatever word you want to use. A person is defined by what THEY choose to be defined by.

I don’t have a full review ready. I just wanted to say that this poem hits hard. I absolutely love promoting the message that blood does not define you. Furthermore, you can take pride in your heritage without looking down on others, and you can acknowledge past ills without having to take on some unjust generational guilt. I can especially relate to the “viking” stereotype here, because my dad’s side of the family is very Nordic (Swedish and Icelandic mainly), and not even that long ago, I was seeing this practical propaganda of teachers and companies in Sweden, trying to alter their history, denounce it, even claim they have “no culture” and “are no better than their viking ancestors”. Someone on YouTube, who talks about the unknown history of Vikings, as well as broader ancient Nordic culture, even faced pressure from a company to promote a false point of history (Bjorn Anderson if you want to look into it). It was so weird and gross, and completely baseless.

Anyway, enough of my rant, haha. Your poetry is REALLY good! :)

This is an interesting point of view. I agree with all things said, of course stereotyping and pinholding people just because of where they are from is unacceptable.
However, as an American, I find it interesting that I was raised to think that my blood is intertwined with my country and that it makes me part of who I am. As well as having an immigrant parent, I find my blood to define me. Just thought I would share my contrasting views.

As for the actual structure of the poem, I think it has a nice flow and is easy to digest. It is filled with short statements that build on top of each other to create a clear picture of what you want to share. A clear and to-the-point poem, good job, and happy writing!

Hey Sky! I wanted to stop by and leave a quick review for you because I found the message of your poem to be very interesting. I think that you sum up the core message of what you were trying to say very well, and the first two lines:

The way you look at me

Thinking blood means legacy.

You're talking about how people assume we are a certain way because of the way that we are born. From my interpretation, you were talking about being of German descent and Viking heritage. You explain how people assume things about you, or, perhaps that you yourself possess traits that are similar to people or figures in the past to have been hurtful to our world. I think a lot of people experience this in many different ways. But so many people experience it, not only because of their blood, but solely because of who they are, and how they look. I really like what you did here commenting on how we don't have control of who we are born to be, and the blood that run through your veins should not be a legacy that defines your future.

Is that how you see my inner flame?

Use words with care before you speak;

Words can make integrity weak.

I love how you ask a question here. We are so good at labeling people, and assuming that they will be a certain way because of who they are. I like what you did in the following verses where you ask us to search for who you really are and not who we expect you to be. Overall, I really liked the message of this. In terms of the poem, I thought that it was very straightforward and direct. I like those kind of poems because they are easy to follow along with. Like I said, it was very direct, and I didn't really see any kind of metaphor used, besides a few small cases.

I really enjoyed reading this and I hope that you post more of your poetry soon. I feel like you have a really powerful voice and you have a lot of great things to say that couldn't inspire a lot of people, so I hope that you don't keep quiet. :)

Your friend,
Ellie

Hey! I'm gonna do a little, light review on this!

There isn't much to say. This definitely has some feeling into this work, and it's felt and seen. The way this is written definitely addresses humanity, and how we assume everything without diving deeper first. We don't look, we just take a first glance and act like we know everything about you, and that's not how we should work.

There is definitely these hints written in. About how stereotypes hurt the soul, but it's like people don't care. I can say right now, you are heard with this. I can hear you, and I'm sure a lot of others who will read this will say the same. You spoke out. You are heard.

You did a good job staying on point and getting your topic through to the reader, and that's definitely an important factor in poetry. I'm guilty of wandering off topic with my poetry, as many others are. So you did a good job staying with the flow and getting straight down to the gist.

I don't have any recommendations to make. You got to the point, you wrote this well, and you did an amazing job.

Hello, I'm doing a review now.

Overall, it is a good poem. I can feel the emotion you put into it. I don't think anything needs to be corrected. I like how it shows the difference between a group and individuals. I believe the overall message of your poem is best said by the last line, "Blood is not my legacy." yea this is more a rant than a review. Overall, it is a good poem and I really like it.
