The encounter

PreviousNext

And then I turned around. Seeing your blue-green eyes made me almost cry. The emotion I saw in them caught me off guard; I hadn't been prepared for THAT. The mirth instead of disappointment, mocking instead of hurt. I felt mislead, deceived and quite frankly as unimportant as a drop of rain in a great storm.

Of all the things I had been considering before arriving here, this particular scenario had eluded me. But at the same time I was not surprised - after all, as cliché as it sounds, life is full of the unexpected. At this moment my inner self, the one that I had neglected to listen to before, said quietly to me the most hated phrase in any persons vocabulary, the one and only „I told you so!“.

This was enough to make me gather myself and bring me back to the task at hand. I am not weak and did not intend to be so in front of him. This had to end, it was unignorable now. “Suck it up and get on with it!” echoed through my head and fortunately I was smart enough to listen to myself this time. There was nothing to save here anyway, best to finish it as fast as possible. I can think about it later.

“I see you’re laughing. Mind telling me what's so funny?"

“Well, you see, the irony of the situation is that I have been thinking about the same for a while. Only that had yet to tell you. Guess you beat me to it. This arrangement was never to last long anyway.”

“Apparently. I say we leave off as friends. We had a deal and now it ends. As simple as that."

It was NOT going to be awkward to look at him later at all, right? Umm.. right?

“Yes, as simple as that.” he said while putting on his cloak. He smiled once more in his peculiar way and turned to leave saying: “It seems that everything is so simple to you.”

“What do you mean?”

“It was simple to start and just as simple to finish, wasn’t it?” He turned and just stood there with that stupid fake smile waiting for me to reply like a fisherman waiting for the fish to bite.

“Do you wish it had been harder?" I paint my own mocking smile into my face. Just to torment him. I know this is cruel, but.. I have no claim on him, but would've liked to have one. And the fact that he apparently wouldn't is like a sharp glass to step on. I could've sworn there was something there before. After the first comfort of the arrangement and before we casually drifted apart. I could’ve sworn he actually felt something like I had. Well, I wasn’t going to show him my now lost feelings, was I. That would mean humiliation in his gorgeous haughty eyes and THAT I wouldn’t stand. I am NOT just another girl pining for him. This was just a comfortable arrangement that both sides agreed to no strings attached and it is over.

“I must be off now.” I said looking at my wristwatch. “I have an appointment I can’t miss. I’ll see you around.” I passed him, held my head real high and left him in my wake as I made for the door. Luckily it opened to the outside and there was a cab waiting. Thank God! Waiting for a cab under his scrutinizing look would’ve been a nightmare. Seems that luck is on my side today! “To Fifth and Maple, please." I took my handkerchief and dried the lone tear that had escaped. Over. For real. No going back. God, I hope I made the right choice.

Hi there! :D I was rummaging through the forums and found your piece! I'm just going to give a few quick things. :) First off, your main character does a lot of thoughts. Make sure that you put thoughts in Italics so it's easier for the reader to understand what is happening in the story. That way we aren't just in the action and then suddenly dropped into a though pool. :) I thought that your story was very well put together and it kept my interest all the way until the end! That's very good. :) I think the thoughts were the only thing that were really out of place so good job! That's all I have for now. :)

Keep Writing!
