when i'm asking what poetry is
my mind draws a blank
it's a canvas for all to write on
every thought
every sight
every sound
when I'm asked what poetry is
i hear a melody playing in my head
it's a record store for all to by in
every brand
every genre
every artist
i'm always asked what poetry is
and it never made sense, at least to me
it's everything we see
every animal
every bird
every fish in the sea
And every time I'm asked
What poetry is
i spread my arms and wave around
it's everything physical
every space
every plant
every dull edged rock you can find
when I'm asked what poetry is
i simply close my eyes and smile
poetry is what keeps me going
it's the escape i need
the ice that keeps me from melting
it's the venting I can turn to
You see
I don't know what poetry is to you
but it's everything
to me

Your comment was posted, but it wasn’t long enough to count as a review. Reviews need about four complete sentences (at least 250 characters). Try writing another review that explains your thoughts in more detail — the author will appreciate it, and you’ll earn points for it.
Hey there matt/crowley/casanova. Again pick one for the sake of this review. It's just lizzy dropping by real quick, so without a further ado, let the reviewing begin.
Now that there is not much to pick out of the green room, I've been forced to come back and review your poems and lyrics again. I don't see actual poems from you much so this will be a change. Should I set it to rap music anyways? Getting on with my actual review.
Something I Don't Usually Talk About: Caps or No Caps
There are some inconsistencies with the style that you've presented in this poem that confuse me a bit. In the past you criticized my use of all under case or a mixture of the two. But here you are using mostly small caps with a couple of upper case letters. The upper case don't really seem to belong and look more like computer dictionary corrections than anything else. The placing of them also suggests this but perhaps it was on purpose. If the caps were on purpose, what meaning were they providing? To me they just look like mistakes the author was too rushed to fix. So yeah please explain.
Topic of the Poem Thing
Okay so you're trying to present a poem that nearly every poet has probably tried to write at some point. I know I wrote a 'what are poems' poetry piece for napo(don't look up my thread) or some other thing. I've seen lots of poems about what poetry is scattered around YWS. I'm sure going in to this, you knew it wouldn't be a unique piece but then again nothing in poetry is unique at this point. Everything has been used and re-used. The piece is a bit bland with some of its comparisons and that makes me judge it, but we still have more to go before I get on with that.
Individual Thoughts
1. This one is worded a bit odd even though I understand what you are trying to mean by it. The meaning is about asking yourself but it sounds like you're asking someone else and then giving your own definition before they respond. Just saying. I don't think you chose this specific wording for rhyme scheme or flow. Just a touch confusing but whatever your style is this week, try to maybe narrow it down a bit.
1. This one actually makes sense. Woo. I'm throwing out compliments to your works all over the place. But yes I did like this one because it aligns pretty closely with some of the other ones that I've read. Poetry is always compared to art because they say that you are painting with words. And if the imagery in a poem is good, that's pretty true.
2. I still find the contractions a bit odd in the way that you use them. When I'm comparing the sounds in my head, it sounds better when you have the words stretched out more with more emphasis. But then you have your style going on so I don't really know how to judge it.
1. Here's the first example of the weird switching of the caps. I don't understand your reason for doing it. Not going to ask you to explain again because I already asked once or twice. Or maybe I will go ahead and do that.
Casssss. Tellll meeeeee nowwwww.
2. This stanza is also pretty nice and I don't have many issues with it except for stuff I already mentioned above.
1. typo, typo, typo, typo
Usually I wouldn't point out typos but my spelling/grammar/typo section is so empty for this review. I have to type at least one sentence there to satisfy my own regulations.
2. This one struck me as a bit odd considering you used a reference I don't think everyone would know. But hey, that's what google is for, right? Sorry bad joke. This comparison just didn't seem as strong as the other one but perhaps it's just my taste in comparisons.
I could go on from here but I really have the same comments for nearly every other stanza. Also Lumi and the dog person beat me here and I don't like to cross paths too often. Overall it's a pretty good poem to describe your emotions and thoughts about poetry. I don't really have anything else to say so I'm going to quickly exit out the back door.
Have a nice day.

There was no meaning for the caps, it was just random and came and went as it happened XD. Thanks for the review!
Hey, Dogs here to review! Let's start off with a positive note, I really loved your poem! Now let's get into a more helpful review!
So I don't mean to be rude, but I don't have a very long time to write this review, so it might be very sloppy and messy, and no I'm not trying to skip and be lazy, but I just have plans soon, so let me just shut up and go right into the review!
Here are the things I especially loved about this poem!
1) The stanzas. I like how the stanzas go from two lines to four lines, then at the end they just continuously do four lines. Normally I don't see poems like this, I see poems with even stanzas, or no stanzas at all. This shows real creativity!
2) On that note, creativity! I loved the creativity you put into this poem. It really helps to show that you really do love poetry, and sometimes the best poems can be about someone, or something you love!
3) The Title, So the only reason that I'm here reviewing your poem, was because the title was very eye-catching! I love it when titles just real me in, sometimes I skip over titles that don't sound interesting, but this title caught my eye and I'm really glad I ran into it!
So I really have to go now, and I'm sorry this review sucked, and that it wasn't much help because there was no criticism or anything constructive about it, but in the future I will definitely write a better review.
By the way, I didn't really find any nitpicks to criticize you on so great work!
Keep up the fantastic writing,
Love,
Dogs
P.S. Again I'm terribly sorry that this review sucked and I really wish I could've been more helpful. I just really have to go, but I really wanted to read your poem because the title caught my eye! Talk to you soon!
Thanks for your review!
No problem!
Overwrought!
Sweet, but overwrought! Let's talk about that.
Your images are
1. A canvas
2. A record store
3. Animals
4. Birds
5. Fish
6. SPACE
7. Plants
8. Dull rocks???
So you can understand my confusion when I look at this and ask myself "What?" I understand the encompassing theme is that poetry is everything. Registered. Gotcha. But imagery begs familiarity within other images, and that brings us onto the topic of Motifs.
Motifs, like themes, are recurring objects, lines, or symbols throughout poetry that tie objects together and bring about cohesion in a loose-cannon world. What you need in this loose cannon poem is a motif. Your best bet? Work with everything. The word, not the concept. Put a narrative spin on this. You go into the record store? You buy everything. You go fishing? You catch everything. Poor examples, but pressing myself for time between yawns, you get the idea. At least half of these rando images need to go out the window into SPACE and stay there.
Find something nice and peaceful. Find a method of execution and stick it out. Experiment. Don't delete what you've written so you can compare; but experiment. Change. Shuffle. Jiggle. Love.
Read, write, share, edit.
