The Adventures of Darren Cassidy - Chapter Five, Part Four - Beware the Watchog

Darren sighed and looked dejectedly at the ground, while Aiden scowled at Tyler.

‘You couldn’t have given us at least one more minute of happiness, could you?’

‘But the class is right around the corner!’ Tyler protested. ‘We’re practically there already.’

‘You know Mrs Williams – a few seconds late is still late.’

That statement held more truth than a random passer-by could have known, which the teacher perfectly illustrated after the trio had taken their seats: she stood up, turned a tiny hourglass on its head, and approached the door. She counted down from ten, reaching zero just as the sand ran out.

‘Class begins now!’ she declared, slamming the door shut.

‘He’s late,’ Aiden whispered to Darren.

A knock on the door confirmed it. Duncan slowly pushed open the door and peeked around the corner hesitantly.

‘Good afternoon, Mrs Williams. I’m sorry I–’

‘No, master Rafferty, it is not. It might have been a good afternoon, had all my students been on time.’

‘But the bell hasn’t gone yet!’

As if just awaking from a stolen nap, the bell announced the start of the next period.

‘It just has, and since you’re still outside the class, you may remain there.’

‘But…’

‘But is the start of an excuse. You would only snore in my class anyway, so I really see no reason why you need attend this lesson. Go home and sleep there.’

‘Are you serious, Mrs Williams?’ Duncan asked, dumbfounded.

‘Quite. In fact, if you plan on being late for Reshday’s lesson too, you don’t have to bother attending that one either. Now, I have a class of willing pupils to teach, so kindly close the door and begone with you.’

When Duncan continued to stand in the doorway, considering what the Watchog had just said, Mrs Williams casually walked over and shut the door in his face. She turned and gave the class a Mean Look, daring anyone to ask if they could leave too. Even Minerva looked away.

‘Open your books at page eighty-two.’

‘The Monster Egg Group?’ Aiden said once he had turned there.

‘Well-observed, master Karman. However, you will deal specifically with Pokémon that belong exclusively to this group. The others we shall discuss during the next few lessons.

‘Pokémon that are classified into this Egg Group are often fearsome in appearance. In addition, they are generally quite powerful. These two factors combine to make them some of the most well-known evolutionary lines in both modern and ancient society.

‘Appearance-wise, most Monsters are bipedal, but there are several quadrupedal examples as well. Often, they have large tails, which aid in balance in reference to the bipedal Pokémon, but many lack them nevertheless. Monsters frequently sport claws too, but as with the tails, it is not a given.

‘Now, to focus on the pure Monsters, it is noteworthy that all of them are, at least partly, Normal, Ground, Rock, and Ice types. This suggests that Monsters are some of the oldest Pokémon, a claim that can be supported by the presence of three Restored Evolutionary Lines. They are closely linked to the Dragon Egg Group in appearance, though certain Pokémon in the Field, Grass, and Water One Egg Groups can also be sorted into it.

‘The pure Monster Evolutionary Lines are those of Cubone, Lickitung, Kangaskhan, Snorlax, Larvitar, Aron, Cranidos, Shieldon, Amaura, and Bergmite. Your homework for Reshday is to list and describe each of their possible Abilities in your own words – evolved and Mega-evolved forms included. It’s quite simple really, so you shouldn’t have a problem with it. You may begin now.’

‘Should we write the repeated Abilities, like Sturdy, out more than once?’ Widen whispered to Darren.

'There are no shortcuts in life, master Karman, so yes, write it out each time. And by the way, masters Cowell and Donnelly, shortcuts include copying each other's work.'

'I wasn't–' Seamus began.

'You will not,' she stamped her foot, 'lie to me! I see everything that happens in my class – including your chewing, miss Brent. Into the rubbish with it.'

Nicole walked over to the bin and spat her gum out.

'Did your manners abandon you?' Mrs Williams asked hotly. 'You are a young lady, not some Ytridorian hooligan! Get back to your desk immediately. Anyone who speaks will receive additional homework. Get to work!'

Darren hurriedly picked up his pen and began copying down the work. The sooner he finished his homework, the sooner he can get Mrs Williams out if his thoughts. Honestly, she could get an Arbok to slither away in fear.

So, Cubone. It and its evolved form, Marowak, had the same potential Abilities, so that was easy. Rock Head mitigated the damage received via Recoil from attacks like Double Edge and Wood Hammer... Lightning Rod, absorbed all Electric type moves aimed at the Pokémon with said Ability (though he himself currently absorbed all Electric moves around him, since he had yet to control his Ability)... And Battle Armour prevented Critical Hits from successfully landing against the concerned Pokémon. Done.

Moving on to Lickitung and Lickilicky. Own Tempo made the concerned Pokémon immune to confusion, self-inflicted or otherwise. Oblivious granted immunity to infatuation caused by Attract and Cute Charm. Cloud Nine mitigated any weather conditions, restoring the weather to mild sunlight.

And so he continued with Kangaskhan, Snorlax, Cranidos and Rampardos, Shieldon and Bastiodon, Amaura and Aurorus, and Bergmite and Avalugg. All of them were simple in that the Abilities remained the same throughout the evolutions. The trouble came with the two lines that could Mega-Evolve.

Larvitar was simple, since it only had Guts, which increased its Attack when affected by a nonvolatile status condition like Burns or Poisoning (sleep, freezing, and paralysis prevented attacks, which defied the purpose), and Sand Veil, which increased its Speed when experiencing a Sandstorm. But Pupitar had Shed Skin, which could spontaneously cure all status conditions, because of its cocoon-like state, and Tyranitar had Sand Stream and Unnerve, which causes a Sandstorm to rage or makes any opponents too nervous to eat Berries, respectively. (Mega-Evolution resulted in only Sand Stream.)

Aron and Lairon fortunately shared Rock Head and Sturdy, which prevented them from being knocked out in one hit, but Aggron had Sturdy and Heavy Metal, which doubled its weight. Filter, which reduced the damage received from super effective attacks by twenty-five percent, broke the pattern by only being accessible through Mega-Evolution.

Luckily, two hours were more than enough to copy all of that down – even for him, who wrote slower than Duncan. (It seemed the Drowzee had long ago learned to write as fast as a Greninja in order to accommodate his sleeping habit.) Of course, he and everyone else pretended to be busy until the bell went, lest they receive more homework.

'I know you all can't wait to be out of here, so go. You are dismissed.'

'You know, Aiden,' Darren said once outside, 'if Mr Williams married her, I think there might still be hope for Minerva.'

Woo! Review time!

Note:

Throughout your uh, "infodump," you kept switching tenses. I know there are rules about places where that is acceptable, but the constant switching was a bit too much. Even if this could be considered literary present tense (like when you have to write book reports in present tense because the book won't change), the fact that Darren is writing it down warrants the use of past tense.

It's up to you really, whether you switch to present or not, but try to be consistent in that section.

Impressions!

1. Some of this information from school better be useful later on, Hunter. I know you want to keep going as long as possible, but it's important to remember that things must stay relevant. Nothing that receives as much attention as this lesson should be worth forgetting.

2. The repeated jabs about Minerva's ability to be in a relationship are amusing. I enjoy the normalcy that has made up most of this story.

3. When are we getting back to the deal with Darren's dad? That seemed to be the main focus of the novel, but it hasn't been mentioned lately, even as a casual thing.

Well, that's about it for the week. Catch you later!
-Buggie

As always, thank you for your review.

Notes:
1. When I started reading your note, I thought you were referring to Mrs Williams' dialogue, which didn't make sense, since everything was supposed to be in the present tense. Then I continued with the note and saw you meant Darren's work. However, I only changed tenses once, and though that was a mistake, I don't see how one change makes for consistent tense-switching. Please explain that again.

Impressions:
1. Everything that they discuss here is important and will feature in at least one way.
2. Even in this world, pupils tease others consistently. :P
3. The exposition is taking really long, which is why you'd think that. You, and whoever else is reading this, might want to keep in mind that when I classify something as a novel, that means 200 pages. I'll try to speed things up though and keep it a period a part.

I look forward to your next review. Expect the rest of yours tomorrow.

Maybe I was looking at the wrong part when I double-checked the review... sorry about that.

No problem, though I still need to fix that one tense change.

'ello! I was beaten by ParanormalMyth! Nooooooo-

Comments and Impression!

1. I'm expecting Mrs. Williams to be a total sweetheart inside. It's just that character archetype. Then again, you said you liked defying those character guildlines... In fact, even if she doesn't turn out to be nice, I like her! Compared to that carefree Bellossom from before, we're getting a variety of teachers!

2. Woah, an overload of information! Don't worry, it's not bad, since Darren's at school and naturally, we need to learn stuff in school. That seems like a lot to memorize. Is this expected of Pokemon like we learn math formulas or writing formats?

3. I am secretly sorta happy Duncan got reprimanded. Ignoring the running gag, sleeping in class is something I'm surprised the other teachers tolerate. I guess him being a Drowsy gives him an excuse?

At least you beat the other members of Team Striprime. :P

Impressions:
1. (No notes?) Actually, many of the teachers at my school that I call wicked witches (of the North, West, South, East, and Centre) are only menacing when they must be - otherwise, they are total sweethearts, yes. (There is a reason why someone as gentle as Mr Williams would marry her, after all. ;)) And yes, none of the teachers are alike; each has a unique nature.
2. I'm so glad your first reaction wasn't, "Info-dump! *lectures*". Yes, it is expected of them to remember all of that - schools are cruel that way. Of course, many Pokemon forget the things they were taught in school after they've graduated, just like in reality.
3. We had a pupil in our class who frequently spoke out of his turn and disrupted the class. Everyone complained, but none of us could do anything about it. Not all the teachers accepted that, so I subconsciously based this instance of that. But yes, most teachers excuse him because of his species.

You know, I have realised that you possess an art for writing short but nevertheless excellent reviews. ("Concise" is a better word.) Thank you for all the advice you provide, even if you don't realise it. ^_^

Eheheh, no notes because I couldn't find any problems that I didn't mention before already. I'll make sure to tell you that next time.

Hey!

I saw this in the Green Room and thought I'd give it a go. I read through everything before this over the past hour, so I think I've got a good understanding of everything. I apologize in advance for any typos, I'm currently on an iPod and can't see very well out of my left eye.

#004000 "> I personally have played Pokemon, but don't know a whole lot about all the statistical things. You've done very good job at making sure that this story makes sense to people who don't have much Pokemon experience! :)
I love the detail in this. There isn't too much, or too little. Even though I've never heard if some of these Pokemon, I can still picture them based off your descriptions. :) You've also done a great job at world-building. I really like how you've come up with an idea for the Pokemon to be like people, instead of telling a boring story of their usual lives of being with a trainer, or running wild. You've really created a interesting concept here that I can't really find anything bad about. :)

She turned and gave the class a Mean Look,

I personally didn't know if "Mean Look" was a Pokemon move or not. So I though it was best to point this out. If it is a move, then it's fine to be capitalized. If it isn't, it shouldn't be. I'm leaning towards it probably is, but I thought I should still point it out.

‘Should we write the repeated Abilities, like Sturdy, out more than once?’ Widen whispered to Darren.

I think you meant "Aiden", not "Widen"

the sooner he can get Mrs Williams out if his thoughts.

*of, not if

And so he continued with Kangaskhan, Snorlax, Cranidos and Rampardos, Shield on and Bastiodon,

I feel like "Shield on" is a typo, but I haven't an idea what it's supposed to be.

Overall, I really enjoyed this!

Thank you so much for your review!

Plot

World-building is possibly my favourite part of writing fantasy fiction, so I am thrilled you enjoy it. The Pokemon have always been what interests me most about the craze, so I decided to write a fanfiction where those annoying humans were out of the way. Besides, the Pokemon are more than capable of creating a society of their own, though there are still feral savages in this world too.

Characters

I feel that the best way to depict your characters is to create an idea of their personality and history and then apply what you know to how they would act in that situation. (Putting them in different scenarios are especially interesting.) The thing I enjoy doing the most is making characters defy the tropes to which they seemingly belong. Nevertheless, it's always great to know your efforts paid off. ^_^

Typos/Grammar/Odd Sentences

Ugh, you must forgive those typos. I had finished this chapter on the tablet last night, and though I tried my best, I wasn't able to catch all of autocorrect's tricks. To clarify:
1. Mean Look is a move that prevents the target from retreating.
2. I most definitely meant Widen. It's proposterous that autocorrect doesn't know it's a name. >_<
3. That's certainly "on" and not "if", yes.
4. Shieldon is a Pokemon restored from an Armour Fossil.

Haha, no problem! I really enjoyed reading and reviewing your work! Ahh, I thought Shieldon was a Pokemon, I was just confused by the space inbetween the word. Thanks for clearing those things up, and taking the time to reply to my review! :)

I didn't feel like bringing it up in my own review, but you didn't get rid of the space, Astral. Shieldon's the Pokemon, not Shield on.

nitpicksyayyyy?
