Art From the Lips

Walking into the small apartment building, Scarlett craned her neck to the side to look up the winding dark wood stairs that went up to multiple rooms. She had been informed that her room was all the way towards the top. Another cliche dream: an apartment overlooking Paris. It was all too good to be true.

The small doorknob twisted easily and the door opened quickly as well. With a smile on her face, Scarlett walked in waiting for a warm welcome to help her feel at home in the dreamy city. Nobody was there to greet her. She scanned the apartment and saw the windows overlooking small buildings. Walking across the stained white carpet, she went to the window, any foreigner's attraction when in such a city. The clouds were the perfect backdrop to the apartment, glowing with colors of sorbet, and Scarlett wondered if Heaven constantly sat above Paris.

"Hello." Someone said with an accent. It was her new roommate that she had been anticipating. "I see you have just welcomed yourself in." Not the sentence she was hoping to hear, Scarlett turned to see a rugged looking girl, yet still fashionable, with a cigarette in her long fingers.

"No-n-nobody was here at the door a-a-I had the key already, so you see-"

"Stop." The mysterious girl in fishnets put her hand with the cigarette up. "I cannot hear anymore of your babbling. We have spoken before. I am Satine. This is the living room. Exciting, I know," she said with sarcasm. Her eyes gazed Scarlett up and down while she looked for something to say. "And your room is down the hall. Since we are both now art students I suppose we will have something in common." she finally smirked, and although it was small, it made Scarlett feel all the more better.

Her room was white, with a mattress on the floor, and she hung a few posters up. It all looked empty, with just a desk next to a window, and a closet to hold her things. She stayed away in her room much of the next few days, and most would want to explore Paris, but with not much money, being only fluent in French, and being an art student with a wandering mind, she had no problem staying there. Satine popped in every day to converse with her, and they didn't say much, yet still got to know each other as acquaintances.

"Bounjour," Satine was at Scarlett's bedroom door as if she had been statued there for a while. "or maybe I should say hello, since you are American."

Scarlett didn't respond but only smirked.

"Aren't you happy you found an English speaking student to room with?"

"Yeah it's pretty nice to hear something that sounds like home." Scarlett made no eye contact, Satine intimidated her very much.

"Come eat dinner if you want some." and with that, Satine left, leaving a trail of cigarette smoke behind her and the smell made Scarlett long for her presence.

Scarlett felt something odd, something she had not felt before. She had always heard about the crazy college hookup stories where "bi-curious" girls would get together. It was always for attention she thought, but the thoughts crossed her mind all on their own. Was it something that just occured without you having any say in it?

Getting up to go see Satine, who she now wished were near her, she walked into the living room to see her sitting at the table eating pasta.

"Oh, so you do wish to join me? Sit." Scarlett walked over and sat, with her own bowl of pasta, staring at Satine.

"Why do you stare at me? What is wrong?"

"You're beautiful." Scarlett said, seemingly without control. That was the thing with Satine, when Scarlett was around her she felt overpowered and didn't understand why.

Satine laughed. "Why thank you."

After dinner, Scarlett was still in her room. Sating butted her head into the door.

"Come." and with that, she was gone. Scarlett got up and followed the smell of smoke to Satines room, covered in art.

"It's wonderful. You did this all? What is the inspiration?"

"So many questions, but how can an artist name their inspiration? There are so many."

Scarlett walked up to one of the paintings and recognized what she saw.

"This-this is the Paris sky," she looked back at Satine and she sat taking a puff of smoke with another one of her famous smirks. "and it looks like a pastel rainbow that has been put into a blender and lightly poured over clouds, and they just absorb it yet they do it so perfectly. And when you mix the sun with it, it just seems to hit each piece of pastel in the right way and it aligns the clouds in an indescribable way. It leaves the clouds with funneling reys of light pouring out of them and it makes you feel-it makes you feel as if heaven is only an arm reach away."

When the sentence was finished, she felt lips pressed to hers, and hands on her head, not softly, and the kiss was long and passionate. Scarlett fell into it quickly and as she started to come further put of the abyss of not being lonely anymore, it stopped.

With an expected smirk, Satine softly said with her red lips,"That's the most I've heard you talk, and it was too beautiful to not thank you for."

Welcome to YWS! Lucrezia here for a review.

This was really quite lovely. Both of these characters were quite intriguing, and I liked how different and contrasting you made their personalities—they stood apart from one another very well.

The pacing was good, everything flowed together beautifully. I love the title; it fits the story so well. The details/descriptions were just enough, not too overwhelming that the reader gets lost in them. Dialogue felt good, very natural.

Overall? Amazing. Really, really good job. :)

Nitpicks:

Scarlett walked in waiting for a warm welcome

I'd put a comma after "walked in."

she finally smirked, and although it was small, it made Scarlett feel all the more better.

Capitalize the S in "she" and take out "more."

She stayed away in her room much of the next few days, and most would want to explore Paris, but with not much money, being only fluent in French, and being an art student with a wandering mind, she had no problem staying there.

This is a bit clunky. I'd rephrase it to something like:

'She stayed mainly in her room the next few days. Most would want to explore Paris, but with not much money and being only fluent in French—as well as being an art student with a wandering mind—she had no problem staying there.'

"Bounjour," Satine was at Scarlett's bedroom door as if she had been statued there for a while. "or maybe I should say hello, since you are American."

I'd replace the comma after "bonjour" to a period, and capitalize the O in "or."

Scarlett made no eye contact, Satine intimidated her very much.

Maybe change the comma to a semicolon.

Sating butted her head into the door.

I think you meant, "Satine"? ;)

and with that, she was gone.

The A in "and" should be uppercase here.

to Satines room

There should be an apostrophe. "Satine's," not "Satines."

"and it looks like a pastel rainbow..."

Once again, the A in "and" should be capitalized.

Okay! Nitpicks out of the way, I must say I loved this. It was really beautiful and fun to read. And that last line was perfect.

Well done and keep up the good work! :D

Thank you so much! I appreciate all of the help!

What a sad, sad story. It was absolutely magnificent! You are wonderfully descriptive and Heather's thoughts are so easy to sympathize with. "It’s a different feeling to the hopeless frustration I was feeling when he couldn't see me, but it’s no less dreadful." This is such a wonderful explanation! There were so many other parts I liked but I don't want to copy and paste your whole story down here ;)

Her room was white, with a mattress on the floor, and she hung a few posters up. It all looked empty, with just a desk next to a window, and a closet to hold her things. Wonderful story, and I'm glad I read it!

Thank you so much! It's my first story. :)
