How YWS Helps Me In School

Once upon a time, a long lo- oh wait, never mind. Recently, I was trying to find a website for young authors. In my search, I came across some crappy, un-developed, crude sites that just didn't cut it. I wanted to post my work where people could see it and tell me what they thought. In my search I found YWS; it was just like a dream come true. This place was a magical kingdom as great as Narnia; I fell in love with the place and now I cannot let it go. I decided to join, and wow but it was a great choice!

In my first days here, I admit I was a bit overwhelmed. So many awesome authors of my generation: so many people letting out their feelings and emotions through poetry. Not to mention the abundance of people letting loose in action and adventure. This site is like a goldmine that will never run out. As I browsed through peoples works of art, I gave out my inexperienced reviews (not that they are that much better now...) and just absorbing the feelings. I knew there were lots of authors my age, but I did not realize how many there really were.

Before I discovered this miraculous site I thought I was cut out to write stories, books. Man but was I wrong! I like writing stories, I am working on one right now and it is slowly progressing; but it is not my'calling'.I started my first few days here by browsing everywhere, shorts, poetry, novels, chapters, articles, just all of it. As I looked around, I found myself continually drawn to the poetry section. I had written a few poems as a kid, and looking back on them now it makes me want to sink through the floor and disappear from embarrassment. But I have now written a few poems, and I find that I love it. Poetry is beautiful, I realize now that it is an amazing form of art. Poetry is the word form of art, and as great as Galileo's art is; he ain't got nothing on Maya Angelou. Poetry is an art that comes from within. Poetry is, is Pouring out Your emotions, your feelings, your heart. Poetry is baring your soul, it is letting people see way down inside you and understand it.

Writing is like walking into life itself; you never know exactly what is going to happen. You pick up your pen and start to write, the ink trails forming into words and expressions. You start to let loose and your words turn into a raging turmoil of everything. You start sorting things into groups; trying to make sense of what is in your head. Slowly, you form comprehensive thoughts that you can finally write down. Until they no longer make sense, then you throw your pen down in frustration. I have said before that your mind is like a large jar filled with pieces of paper with words written upon them; when you cannot think of anything else you reach in and pull something out and keep going. Every once in a while though, this huge hand comes out of nowhere, reaching down it crams a lid on your jar of thoughts. This hand is the crazy terrifying, horribly revolting monster known simply as Lack-Of-Inspiration, and that lid is the 'Writers Block' we all know and fear. 

There are some truly amazing writers here with some great works. I like to review peoples works, evaluating, contemplating, and using creative criticism to portray howIthink that people are progressing as authors. Recently, I have had a few essays in school that called for me to evaluate poems, short stories, and articles that I have read in class. Because of the reviews I have done on YWS, I was done with these assignments quickly and before I realized it. So thanks to the creators and authors of The Young Writers Society for helping me do well in school and encouraging me to become a better writer.
