I am a shadow
My normal life no longer exists
I am a different person
I will lie to protect my-self and others
I will force a smile to keep people at bay
I will snap to keep people away
I am the reflection of my-self
One that will say “Isn't it wonderful?”
One that will smile and say “I'm fine.”
I am not myself
And nothing hurts anymore
So how are you on this fine day?
I am myself
My normal life is a secret
Because my skin is pale
My eyes are dull and hollow
My cheeks are sunken
My reflection smiles and says “I'm fine”
When I bury my face and choke back sobs
I am not a reflection
I am a person
And you will never see me
I am myself
And it hurts
So please go away and replace the lock you broke to find me

This was an interesting poem that I thought was brilliant. My interpretation might be a little different, but I read it as though someone was very gloomy and sad feeling with many buried secrets and bad memories. Then, that person would try to hide their sadness with phrases like
" So how are you on this fine day?" I interpreted that line two ways though; the first is that the person was covering up for something. The second is that maybe it was a little sarcastic as though they were describing their sadness and then asking, well how are you?
I also interpreted it like the person was reflecting on themselves, which you refer to as a mirror, and they try to pretend that they were happy and " fine" but came to realize they weren't.
I really liked the poem and those were just my interpretations. You did a fantastic job with it, it was absolutely something many people can relate to. Well done!
Thanks for reviewing. Internet hug for you!
Okay, so the first part is the reflection. The speaker is describing how she is like a reflection; she is describing how she reflects back certain attitudes and such to people who don't really know what's really going on with her. She doesn't want people to know how badly she is hurting, so she just shows people what they want to see, which is why at the end of the first part she says "How are you on this fine day?" which is a very optimistic and cheerful line, one that does not fit with the tone of the poem that conveys the feeling of certain, impending doom or hopelessness.
The second part, on the other hand, is where the speaker describes her true self, not the person people see reflecting emotions back at people. I can tell this by the specific way the speaker says "I am not myself" in the first part, and then, "I am myself" in the second part. So who this person really is is a youngish girl, probably, who has been hurt and cannot show her hurt tot he rest of the world. No one really knows her, hence the "my life is a secret" line. The darkly beautiful yet competitively sickly way she describes herself shows us that she is hurting and in pain, probably deeply depressed, too, despite what her reflection sees, hence her reflection telling her that she's "fine". This means that her reflection part, or her lie she tells the world, has become so convincing that she has trouble even dealing with the truth, or who she is.
The last line indicates that this girl was indeed hurt by someone, most likely a boy she was in love with. The line about replacing the lock this young man found means that this girl was probably already a guarded person by nature, yet this boy found a way in, got her to trust him, meaning that when he broke her heart, it hurt doubly as bad. Now she doesn't even want to see this boy again, and she wants her heart just to be locked away so she won't hurt anymore.
I liked this poem. Good job ^_^
