Hands

Ok so this is my first attempt at short stories. This is a true story and it's something that I needed to get out. Please comment.

Hands are shaking cold

These hands are meant to hold

Hands; that’s what comes to mind when I think about you. The way you folded you hands over mine. Your hands are about twice my size, my finger tips would barely reach where your fingers started. Hands were one of the first things we talked about. Well palms really. You told me how if the lines on your palms met at the top you were good luck, but if the lines didn’t meet you were bad luck. I remember how you gently grabbed my palm for the first time.

“See they meet at the top, you’re a horseshoe.”

“But they don’t on this hand.”

I showed you my other palm, the lines on my palm made two clear paths that never joined.

“I guess I’m half and half”

You didn’t say anything after that.

As our relationship moved on, hands were still always important. You used to talk about my hands all the time. You always talked about how cold they were.

“Jesus your hands are freezing!”

“They always are. But that’s what you’re there for; you’re my hand-warmer.”

I saw that smile; I know you liked me saying that. After that you always told me my hands were cold. But I only said it once. Looking back I wish I said it more, but maybe its better that I didn’t. Maybe me not saying it more has made this a bit easier on you. I hope it has

You liked how small my hands were. You were always telling me how cute and tiny they were. One time you even said you loved them. I wonder if you still do.

I liked your hands too. I remember the way your long fingers would stroke my short stubby fingers. You always had little bruises under your fingernails. I never did ask how you got them. Your palms were rough and calloused, but were always soft and gentle when you held my hand.

Kind of like you. People always asked me what I saw in you. I guess they only see the calluses, the scars, they don’t see how gentle you really are. Or at least you used to be. I can’t tell if you’re still as gentle as you used to be. I guess that’s my own fault.

We used to write our names on the back of the palm. I remember I had to write my name for you the first time because you didn’t know how to spell it. You never spelt it wrong after that. I always had your name written on the back of my hand. You took it one step further. I remember one day your friend came up to us. He was talking about your hands.

“Come on, show it to her!”

“Show me what?”

You smiled embarrassedly; even though we had been together for so long you still were very shy around me.

I can’t explain what I felt when you pulled up your sleeve; deep, blood-crusted scratches spelt out my name. It was a surreal moment; I think that was when I saw how much I really meant to you. That’s also when I started to realize that our relationship was starting to become unhealthy. Because you had more on you then just my name; red lines crawled all over your arms. Some of them met at the top; did that mean they were good luck? But I kept silent. I thought it would be best if I kept my opinions to myself. Maybe I shouldn’t have.

I don’t know why I ended things between us. I don’t know if it was a right or wrong decision. I do know that I should have ended it better, I should have told you to your face. You deserved to at least of gotten the chance to ask me why, even though I didn’t have an answer.

I wish you would talk to me. I want to know if your hands have healed over yet. I want to see if the scratches left scars. I hope they didn’t. I don’t want to think about what you would do if they did. But I guess it’s my own fault.

I miss your hands.

I really liked this. It was so sweet and everything at the beginning. With you two falling for each other based on hands. I liked the title too, but I do think, however, that if you maybe called it something deeper, it would mean more, or something. I have only one idea, and its "Scratches" or something like that. I think that even though the story is based on hands, you talk about it alot. But the significant thing in here, is the scratches. You relate the scratches to the lines on hands. How you ask "does that mean it's good luck?" relating to the scratches. Again, you said that you ended it because, not only did you see how he was growing so close to you that he scratched your name in, but also because you saw more scratches on his arm.
The whole reason for the end, the emotion behind it all, is the scratches. that's just my opinion.

Other than that, I loved this! My mom was talking to me, and all i could do was say "uh huh" before continue reading. I usually respond better, like with actual words. But while reading this, I was distracted. I really liked the ending, how you said "red scratches crawled on your arms." it gave me a visual of the guys arm.

Really nice writing. Are you a poet? i sensed some poet-ness in there

Hey there AunnaLea, it’s Lily here at your service. *bows* First of all, might I just say welcome to YWS and make another quick note to stop by the Welcome Forum and leave a post if you haven’t already.

But now let’s get on to the writing. :D

Nitpicks

I keep staring at these and I can’t quite remember if they’re song lyrics that I might have heard at some time or another. If I had internet right now, I would check but that’s beside the point. I don’t care so much care about who wrote them (if it wasn’t you any ways) if they don’t belong to you, you need to credit the author.

Because you had more on you then just my name; red lines crawled all over your arms. Some of them met at the top; did that mean they were good luck?

Okay, there are a few things I want to discuss in here, first off being the use of the semicolon. For starters, this is a little repetitive when you use semicolons this close together. That leads me to number two thing about this and that is the bolded portion. In idea, semicolons are really just like periods, which means you need to have complete sentences. I would actually just recommend putting things together so that you have one whole sentence up there. Lastly is the italicized part which I think is absolutely wonderful in the way its rather innocent.

Okay…those were actually the only things I really wanted to bring up so um…well keep reading down the page….I guess…

Overall
This is actually a very unique concept and one that I’ve never really seen before: falling in love through someone’s hands. It’s very cute.

Hello!

Are you a poet? 'Cause I could detect some poetic descriptions and such throughout the narrative. Very cute. As is the entire story itself (until the end with the scratches which made me cringe).

This isn't much of a story (which conflict and plot and such) but a narrative, and as a narrative, it sounds very good! I think what would have been really cool if you didn't make it so obvious that this was about hands. It was more than the hands; it was everything that came with them. I think if you spent more time on that, the title would hold more meaning, and it would seem much more sweet.

This leads me to say I didn't much like how you started and ended the piece. With the beginning, you smacked the reader with the "This is about hands so get ready, okay?!?" I didn't really like that. If you smoothed us into the first scene which so happened to mention hands, it would feel so much better.

And with the conclusion, the last line didn't make as much of an impact as you were hoping for. It's the kind of ending I always love doing, but you didn't quite hit the mark with it int his piece. Before that sentence, the narrator was feeling guilty and talking about whatever. Then suddenly she says she misses his hands. I think if you tied those together better, like after saying the narrator felt guilty, say that a part of the narrator still wished he was around, blah blah blah, then bring in that last sentence about the hands. It would make much more of a goosebumps-impact, I think. If that made any sense at all.

Besides those suggestions, very lovely piece!

Keep writing!
