It smelled sour

And sweet

And wet.

Like decaying magnolias,

Rotting inside out.

I’m self preserving.

Never fully asleep

Never fully awake.

Drinking from the Lethe,

Hoping the gods will have pity.

Scoop my crumbled frame out of the water,

And carry me to the next shore.

I see ember eyes glowing back at me in the dark.

Waiting for their next meal.

I let foot fall over foot

Trying to find a semblance of rhythm.

I wanted so much

So much more than this.

I broke both ankles on my way up

And the ground opened up beneath me and said “this is your home now.”

And at first I clawed at the walls until my nails bled.

I don’t know why I ever fought so hard.

I remember daisy chains and soft grass,

I remember orange slices that dripped sweet nectar from the corners of your mouth,

I remember the way we used to play,

And I remember all the things we used to hide from.

I remember not knowing what was actually going on around us.

And now we’re older

And colder,

And I’m stuck halfway through the linoleum floor of the kitchen and the gates of hell.

The best I can do to lick my wounds is watching the ceiling fan spin and feeling the ache in my body.

My ribcage swells and I can’t tell if it’s because my skeleton wants to breathe or if I’m ready to combust.

Thin white lines on thin white skin.

It never affected me too much.

I’ve been declawed,

Cut back at the knuckles,

Tamed for your leisure.

All I ever wanted was for you to love me.

Not unconditionally.

Unconditionally leaves room for abuse,

That’s the one thing you taught me.

Conditional love means you have less room to make mistakes and still have my forgiveness.

Unconditional.

It leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I wanted conditional fierce love,

I wanted to tear myself to the bone for you.

Show you all my inner clockwork and veins.

I wanted acceptance.

And all I got was “unconditionally.”

“..but I love you unconditionally.”

I ate the words you gave me,

I choked on them thinking you would give me CPR.

And you wrapped your fingers around my throat and fucking strangled me.

My body went limp but that wasn’t enough for you,

So you took out your saw and chisel and chipped and sawed away until you were satisfied.

I can’t even begin to be cohesive anymore.

I can’t believe I trusted you.

I gave you so much of me thinking you would listen to what I had to say.

But it doesn’t matter.

It’s always about you

It’s always been about you.

God forbid I say I’m the victim.

I gave you everything.

I gave you so much.

I gave you everything.

I used to pray for the devil.

Prayed to god to forgive him.

He didn’t know any better.

He wanted to get back into heaven,

Just one more chance.

And then when I grew up I realized I might’ve been praying for myself.

Praying to be saved,

Not from sin,

Praying for a savior from my own personal hell.

I can hear my body crack like ice when I move,

It used to be funny.

Then it started hurting.

And I feel like I can’t keep going on.

I’m not gonna die but I can’t keep doing this.

I just needed a little sympathy.

And I’m so tired of being so sensitive

And so numb

All at the same time.

I’m so tired.

I feel like neon yellow signs,

Sickly and an eyesore.

Bending glass to create fluorescent letterings,

Advertising your next meal.

I am the glass,

I am the meal that sits on your dinner plate.

I am every wrong note and out of tune instrument you’ve ever played.

A sharp out of place twang that wasn’t supposed to be in the song.

A painful and obvious mistake.

God you..
You fucking ruined me.

I really enjoyed reading this. I see other people have mentioned how it seems like you're rambling and that it's a little mixed up I guess? But I think this is a unique strength, I like the style of this writing. It had a central theme which I think is what kept it all together. I liked the themes of other people hurting you as well as hurting yourself in the process. It made me think of regret and wanting change that will never come, wishing for the worst.

"I’m self-preserving."

"I don’t know why I ever fought so hard.
I remember daisy chains and soft grass,
I remember orange slices that dripped sweet nectar from the corners of your mouth,
I remember the way we used to play"
---- I loved the imagery of this, beautifully written

"All I ever wanted was for you to love me.
Not unconditionally.
Unconditionally leaves room for abuse,
That’s the one thing you taught me.
Conditional love means you have less room to make mistakes and still have my forgiveness.
Unconditional.
It leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
I wanted conditional fierce love,
I wanted to tear myself to the bone for you."
------this really spoke to me because I constantly think about how I love people unconditionally, and it can be both a beautiful strength and a weakness at times. I love toying with the idea of unconditional/conditional love, I'll keep thinking and reading over this writing.

"Show you all my inner clockwork and veins.
I wanted acceptance."
-----I loved the imagery again, showing someone the most vulnerable and truest parts of yourself.

"I used to pray for the devil.
Prayed to God to forgive him."
-----again with the unconditional love, seeing the best in people and wanting the best for them, even if they are the devil.

"And I’m so tired of being so sensitive
And so numb
All at the same time."

Thank you. I never took a liking to rhyming poetry and preferred to base my writing loosely off of a ballad type, so I%u2019m glad you were able to appreciate my %u201Crambling.%u201D

Hello AtomicSpaceKid,
I hope you are having (or will have) a lovely day wherever you are.

Roses

The imagery was so appealing. It leads into a much deeper story and meaning, one that I feel came from a deep place in your heart. In the first half you illustrate how you have been fighting so hard to be accepted. Yet like the rotten tree it is all in vain. Either way you know that you will crumble into a helpless heap. It also illustrates how the person you are fighting will not listen, nor accept you. They manipulate their “unconditional” love so as to control you. The sentiment in every line was so strong, almost palpable.

The poem’s structure could use some work. One way to help with that is by using stanzas. This will help break it into separate thoughts and ideas. It will allow the reader to more easily follow along and to get the bigger picture of your poem. YWS is weird because to make separate stanzas you have to put in a bunch of spaces. So watch out for that.
I also suggest keeping the lines at one length or let them have some sort of pattern. Whether that be a rhyming scheme or a syllable count. It gives poetry in general that certain punch that I think you're looking for. (This is entirely opinion based, so feel free to ignore this.)

There were a few lines that I think could use some re-wording. It will help with the overall flow and feel of the poem.
And now we’re older
And colder,

For example this can be one line.

Overall this was a really good poem! I encourage you to play around with different poem structures and rhyming schemes. They are a lot of fun to play around with and are a good way to vent out your emotions. (I speak from experience.)
Anyways, I hope that you are safe and doing well. Just know that you are in my prayers. Have a great rest of your day and keep on writing!

Thank you for your review :) I normally try to format my poems a lot better but like you were saying the way that YWS formats everything makes it hard to figure out how to do so. I appreciate the advice even though this was definitely more of a messy glop of emotions and hardly a poem, haha.

So raw, it feels like it might be lot of sperate poems, try cutting this up and putting it into like 10 poems.

Good stuff though, love it.

Thank you for the critique, I%u2019m still getting used to the format of everything and I tend to ramble so hopefully I%u2019ll produce more clean poems in the future.
