VERSE 1
We used to race our bicycles Past the corner store at dusk Knees were scraped and pockets full Of marbles, strings, and dust The porch light meant it’s time to run The moon was our alarm Every little thing we feared Could fit inside one arm
PRE-CHORUS
Now the days are moving faster And the world is getting loud I’m still looking for the laughter That used to come so proud
CHORUS
I miss when the sky was bigger And the nights were never long When being lost meant finding home And every wrong could turn to song Now I’m standing at the doorway With a heart I can’t explain Growing up is learning how To miss the years that made you brave
VERSE 2
There are secrets in the hallway There are mirrors I avoid There are words stuck in my throat That I was never taught to voice My friends are changing faces Like the seasons through the glass And I’m scared that if I blink too soon The best part’s gonna pass
PRE-CHORUS
Everybody says, “You’ll figure it out” Like I’m supposed to know How to hold the person I have been And let the younger one go
CHORUS
I miss when the sky was bigger And the nights were never long When being lost meant finding home And every wrong could turn to song Now I’m standing at the doorway With a heart I can’t explain Growing up is learning how To miss the years that made you brave
BRIDGE
Maybe growing isn’t leaving Maybe it’s a different way Of carrying those old summers Into every coming day The child I was is still here When the world feels cold and strange Whispering, “You don’t have to know Everything to change”
CHORUS
I miss when the sky was bigger And the nights were never long When a cardboard box was anything And everybody sang along Now I’m learning how to stumble Without calling it a shame Growing up is holding on While becoming someone new each day
OUTRO
So I’ll keep that porch light glowing For the kid I used to be If the road gets dark tomorrow She can find her way to me And maybe when I’m older I’ll look back and understand The years don’t disappear at all They’re just resting in your hands

Hello! Lovely to see a song on YWS. Growing up is a universal theme, and you made it fresh and original with your choice of lyrics. There's a sense of bittersweetness and nostalgia, especially in the first verse. The song smoothly transitions into the fears of growing up and leaving childhood behind.
Everything looks so big when you're small; this is a great way to symbolize the themes.
As people grow up, they drift away. And time moves so fast. It reminds me of the Andy Bernard quote in The Office. Does the song have accompanying music? I have a simple rhythm in my head, but it's probably nowhere close to how the song is intended to be sung. Super relatable; lovely job!
Ooh I am excited to review this song, I don't see many on here!
This is a very melancholic song about growing up and the world not feeling the same anymore. I can really relate. The central motif about the sky not being as big anymore is really nicely done. I know exactly what you mean. I wonder if you might put some instruments to this, so I could tell how its supposed to be sung? I couldn't quite get into a rhythm!
One thing, it might be easier to read if you formatted each verse and chorus into stanzas, like:
It just helps with the flow of reading!

Woah, this was soo cool! A work in the format of a song is pretty rare here, so I'm glad to see someone come up with one
First things first, do you also play any instruments? In that case, have u made these lyrics into an actual song? Or is song-writing just not ur thing?
I can see that ur lyrics actually have a lot of rhyming words and this flow that is necessary for it to be turned into a melodious piece. Well done! It should have taken some hard work
And there's actually a beautiful theme and meaning in these lyrics. Growing up and trying not to let go of the playful kid you once were
You're warmly welcome here in the Young Writers Society! <3
It's nice to have u here and keep on the great work
