Year 53… or maybe 110. Who knows? I lay here in nowhere staring up at the vast and infinite nothingness, the heavy void that looks capable of crushing both me and this bare land. The sky, a grim mirror, is empty, absent maybe. My mind has roamed through every possible thought. It is like counting to infinity, being here. The murder of the world could not justly warrant such a reward. This place makes prison a paradise, makes noise a long-lost blessing. I make sounds to myself to remember that I am not deaf. But what good is hearing anyway? Maybe I am deaf, having nothing to hear. Even death should be brighter than this. I have been driven too far away from the real world that even my memories are fading, and that is the chilliest idea. They are my most precious, well, my only possession. Even they have begun to decay. If I lose them completely, then what do I have? Time ago, while thinking of such things, I would become scared and my heart would race, but it seems time is stealing even my feelings away. Am I still human? Then again, time itself has become an absurd thing, a meaningless notion that has no bearing on me. Since nothing is happening and I do not age, I can even safely say that time is not here. Not even Time accompanies me.
Think, think, think… Why am I even here? I pressure my mind until it digs something up. I can sigh. I have remembered something. Or is my mind just making things up to replace all that has left it? I stand again and look about the dim wasteland. There is no sense in walking. Everywhere is the same. There are no trees, no buildings, no sounds. Before being here, such an empty place would have been impossible to imagine. The old sounds and images I used to cling to so tightly have become vague and distorted, even missing altogether. My mind has been through every phase there is, every stage brought forth by complete loneliness. All but one that is. I am at the final stage, well I hope it is, total collapse. The moment I stretch and ache my mind and I can remember nothing, I will forget that I am human. I will simply die, well so I hope anyway.
Oh, I remember! Yes… I can remember now. But somehow, these memories are stripped of the feelings they once harbored. Three men came in with noise and drove everyone in my house to a panic. They killed my children and my wife and I shot them both. Both? But weren’t there three? Maybe just two… No-one believed me and I was sent here… No, no, no…Was I a terrorist? Maybe. I might have been capable. But why not just prison? Why did they send me all the way out here? Why not death row? What could I have done? Kill the president? Or was it a Prime Minister… Who was I? But why would I have been a criminal? Didn’t I know this would be the result? Where… Where is this place? Another planet? Is this place even real? Is this a nightmare? Am I in a coma or something?
Where was I before this? The numbing feeling of total loss is coming upon me as I feel my very consciousness slipping. What am I becoming? With no emotion or memory left, can I still call myself a human being? An ageless being who is greater than time and feeling… “Ha!” I shout to the void. “I am a god! A god! That’s what I am!” But not even my echo responds. I ponder. I forget what I am thinking about.
What is that?! A light! I look up to the sky quickly as I am almost sure I see something.

Hello,
I'm not sure if it's just me, but I feel like this story is incomplete. Will there be a continuation to this, or does it just end here? I am intrigued by the mystery shrouding the main character.
One grammatical error I noticed was in the 3rd sentence where you wrote: "I lay here in nowhere..."
I believe the correct way of writing it would be: "I lie here in nowhere..."
To lie, meaning to recline or to rest, is conjugated this way:
1) I lie here every day. (He/she/it lies here.)
2) I lay here yesterday.
3) I will lie here tomorrow.
4) I am lying here right now.
5) I have lain here for every day for weeks.
Other than this common mistake, I don't see anything that screams out to me. There are a couple instances where your word choice could have been better, but that's about it.
Overall, this is a very well-written story.
Keep up the good work!

thanks for the review. It is helpful.
Sunshine1113 here to review....
Wow, this is deep and somewhat mind boggling. I seriously want to know where this guy is and what weird world/state of being he's in. I don't really have any nitpicks because birkhoff said pretty much what I would say. By the way: welcome to YWS! I hope you post more stuff soon because you seem like a really awesome writer and I would really love to read what you post. (Plus I really want to know what happens to this guy, it's just a really interesting story)
Thanks a bunch for your review, Sunshine!
Hey Adam!
First off, welcome to YWS! I hope you enjoy yourself here.
Alright, I enjoy reading short stories here, as anything longer is likely to remain unfinished. Your story is a bit weird though. On one hand, it's only a character's thoughts, on the other hand, we have to read between the lines of these thoughts as your character isn't quite reliable or of sound mind.
Now, I usually try to look for some sort of message as I read and write reviews, but I didn't really find a proper message here. It has a point, sure. But I don't get so much out of it.
I feel this is a bit too short for a short story as well, and I questioned the fact that this was tagged as a short story while reading it as it reads more like a scene from a larger story. But as I said, it has a point in the end.
As far as I can tell, the main character may or may not be a terrorist who killed his family. But he can't remember exactly, and he can't imagine doing that. After this, I guess he was executed and this entire thought process is him ultimately facing death.
I'll write as I go along:
Now, this entire piece was incredibly hard to read, as the entire work is a giant wall of text! Seperate this up into paragraphs.
I was going to ask why he would remain in this state for so long before 'seeing the light', but as I write this I realize he may have been in limbo. If that's the case, then it's pretty cool.
You use a lot of great descriptions and have a good, varied vocabulary. Though it's hard to visualize this barren wasteland, seeing as you didn't mention the environment until towards the end of the story, the imaginative thoughts you write for the character still gives us a lot.
This, however, is one of several lines that makes the story rather confusing to understand. This gives an image of an apocalyptic event, which goes in hand with the wasteland you describe, yet as I wrote earlier, that is not what I got out of the story.
It's quite confusing. Remember you are writing something for others to read. Don't be too cryptic.
Heh, I was going to put an edit on this word, but hey, I looked it up and this is actually a correct word. Silly me.

I thought this line was excellent. But reading it again, it realize I got it wrong. I thought his mind was so twisted that he couldn't seperate between what had happened and that you made the cut right in the middle of this line.
As in, he talks about the terrorists: "They killed my children and my wife", and then he talks about himself; "and I shot them both", as he talks about how he killed his wife and kid. This would be an awesome idea. However, you say that he has children, so he couldn't have shot them both. I guess I got this wrong.
Nice and poetic. But I'll hit you back with an old classic: I think, therefore I am.
And lastly:
To me, this person doesn't really seem like a good person. Why would he be accepted into heaven?
Okay, that's all I have to say. I guess most of it depends on whether or not I completely understood what you were trying to convey. Which I definately didn't fully get.
This was an interesting read Adam, I'm interested in your future works.
Keep it up!
Cheers
Reaching back here for a review of what I posted here and it seems I didn't reply to this review! Sorry for taking so long to reply. This review is very helpful!
I love story cliffhangers stories!!! What was the light though?!? I must know! What were you envisioning as the light? I was thinking a UFO or something.

THIS IS VERY WELL WRITTEN. I think there are to many questions back to back near the ending. But other than that, I loved it. I want to know who you are now
