Chapter 4

Brooding

Secrett swerved her motorcycle to a halt in front of the abandoned church. Dirt flew into the air, fogging up the open archways to the chapel.

“Hey Thunder, are you sure we’ve got the right place?” Leith Sparrow asked, getting off his bike as well as Stevie.

“Yes this is it. Tarn Village.” Leith Sparrow nodded. Secrett looked up into the bell tower and saw a dark figure pull back into the shadows.

“Careful, we’re being watched,” she said looking back at Stevie who was flattening a wrinkle in her suit. Secrett rolled her eyes. Stevie suddenly looked up.

“Who’s watching us?” she asked, her voice ringing out in the vast forest. Abruptly there were the reports of a gunshot. It flew past their ears sending them ducking behind their motorcycles for cover.

“Damn princess gave us away,” Secrett hissed to Leith Sparrow who was lying flat against his motorcycle. He nodded and took out his revolver.

“You guys, what was that?” Stevie asked standing up. Another gunshot fired and hit Stevie’s right pigtail. It fell to the ground in a dusty heap. Secrett was the first to react. She threw herself at Stevie, the impact taking them to the ground as a whole furry of gunshots flew by their head.

Secrett let out an “Uh,” as she landed in the dirt next to Stevie who quickly got up and ran over to the church.

“What the hell are you doing,” Secrett yelled turning over on her side.

“Come on, there’s an empty room we can hide in,” Stevie said running into the church. The dark consumed her figure as she went further into the chapel. Secrett looked over at Leith Sparrow and he nodded as they were both thinking the same thing no matter how stupid it was. Secrett shot up and ran after Stevie as more gun reports flew through the air. Leith Sparrow was right behind her, aiming his revolver at the dark figures above the chapel in the bell tower.

Secrett took out her gun and looked around. The church was eerie. The benches were overturned with dark crimson stains in them.

“I’m over here,” Secrett looked around her. Stevie stood in the corner with her arms wrapped around herself.

“Are you okay,” Secrett asked, trying to be sympathetic. It was convincing but she decided it would have to do.

“They shot my hair off,”

“I don’t know,” Secrett said smiling. “I think they were trying to make a fashion statement. It looks kind of cute,”

“Hey are you guys okay?” Leith Sparrow asked. They both nodded and he put his revolver away in his belt loop.

“Well what do we do now?” Stevie asked, slumping down against the wall.

“We go get the Rashians in trouble,” Leith Sparrow said walking around the vast room.

Suddenly a quick flash of something went by Secrett, lifting up her dark black hair behind her. She turned around and a dark figure stood over Leith Sparrow who was now lying on the floor. The dark red wounds began bleeding through his armor. Secrett turned around to look for Stevie. Another dark figure stood over Stevie as well. And just like Leith Sparrow, dark wounds began to seep through the thick armor padding.

“Vampires,” Secrett breathed. They had given themselves away when Secrett noticed their long white fangs injected in each of her partners necks. Ironic, she thought.

Secrett rushed over to Stevie- her being closer- and tore the vampire away. It hissed at her and the she vampire threw Secrett over next to Leith Sparrow. Stevie screamed and pulled away from the vampire. She suddenly lit up in the sunlight and disappeared. It was her powers. They had sensed her trouble and took her to safety Secrett reasoned. The she vampire decided she had her fill and ran off into the back room of the church. The other vampire however remained over Leith Sparrow gorging itself in his blood.

Secrett punched the vampire, not even getting a reaction. She tried again and the vampire struck her across her arm. Leith Sparrow was getting noticeably thinner as he continued to lose his blood. Secrett reached into her pocket and pulled out her pocket knife. She flipped it open and drove the blade into the side of the vampire. It writhed in pain for a few moments and then carefully slid it out of his shoulder. He licked the blade and then threw it across the room. Leith Sparrow slowly got up, weak. He looked at Secrett worriedly and tried reaching for his revolver but his hand, shaking violently couldn’t do it and rested on his stomach.

The vampire looked at him amused and then slowly turned towards Secrett. He smiled maliciously caressing his hand around her face. Secrett had never felt like this ever before. Time slowed down for her as the vampire brushed his lips against hers. His dark brooding brown eyes met her emerald ones and before she could realize what she was doing he vanished in light a breeze.

Chapter 5

Gone

“Secrett, are you okay? You seem kind of out of it,” Athia said looking at Secrett worriedly. Secrett picked up another chair and stacked it on the table.

“So do you think your aunt will let us go?” Athia asked wiping another table down.

“Yeah, but what about your mom,”

“Hey, I’m twenty years old. I can take care of myself,” Secrett smiled and put up the last of the chairs. Athia looked around at the old pub. “Man, how long has Cellos had this place. It’s ancient,” Secrett shrugged.

“Girls are you done yet?” Cellos said stepping out from his office. He locked the door and handed the keys to Secrett.

“Almost,” Athia said smiling. Cellos just looked at her grumpily.

“There’s still one more customer,” Secrett said pointing to a man who was joking with his friends.

“We’re closing up,” Cellos warned. The man and his friends looked up and they chuckled. Cellos let out a low growl and walked over to them. Secrett and Athia looked at each other worriedly.

“Get out, we’re closed,” Cellos said slamming his hand on the table. The man jumped in his seat.

“You should respect your customers old man,” Cellos lost it. He let out an angry roar much like a dinosaur’s and picked the boy out of his seat.

“Hey man what you doing!” one of his friends said getting up to help the boy. Cellos dropped him by swinging him into the boy’s friend. They sprawled over the table. The third friend squeaked and ran for the front door. He nearly made it out, but Cellos caught his ear and nearly ripped it off. The boy yelped as his other two friends got off the table and rushed out the back door, leaving their friend behind. Cellos pushed the last boy out of the bar cursing at him as they all ran down fifth avenue.

Athia let out a small giggle. Cellos finally relaxed and left the two girls to clean up his mess.

~

“Kay’ let’s go,” Secrett said letting her hair out of its ponytail. They had finished cleaning up the broken table and shattered glass and put the rest of the chairs up.

The two girls walked outside of the bar and crossed the street. It was after dusk and there was a new moon. The only thing that lit up the sky was the neon city lights.

“Don’t you think it’s a contradiction that we’re going to a bar after we just worked at one? I mean, why don’t we ever see him anymore,” Secrett asked as they walked up the stairs to the sixth platform of the city.

“I know. I bet you he’s in some sort of cult. I just don’t understand why Cellos doesn’t keep the bar open all night. I mean who drinks beer at five in the morning?” they both looked at each other.

“Ivan,” they said together, laughing.

“So I’m not getting you in trouble by taking you to all these parties am I?” Athia asked.

“No. My mom likes to baby me is all,” Secrett rolled her eyes when Athia wasn’t looking.

Athia continued to rant on how much fun the party was going to be, but Secrett was barely listening. Her thoughts took her back to the previous day. Subconsciously she knew she had seen the same vampire somewhere else. It had driven her crazy while she worked at the bar, as well as the few customers that came in.

“Secrett, seriously are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m fine,” Secrett said looking up. She had obliviously entered the bar where hundreds of people were dancing drunkenly to the deep bass music.

“Oh my god, its Kajios,” Athia squealed. Secrett looked at her.

“Athia, is this why you wanted to come here, to talk to Kajios? I’m sorry but this is just pathetic,” Secrett said shaking her head. Athia ripped through the crowd and sat next to Kajios. Secrett could hear her ask if he remembered her. He nodded his head slowly looking over at the other girls around him. They laughed.

“Jerk,” Secrett mumbled out loud. A nearby man looked at her frowning. “Oh no, I didn’t mean you,” she added quickly as he walked away. She walked over towards Kajios and sat next Athia.

“Hey,” she said smiling.

“Can’t you tell he’s a total asshole?” Secrett asked, clutching Athia’s shoulder. Athia looked at her skeptically, still smiling.

“They were laughing at you,” she said. “They were laughing because of that huge bruise on your shoulder,” Athia pointed to Secrett’s right shoulder. “Someone said that you got a boyfriend with a big mouth, and he gave you a hickey,”

“And you were laughing?” Secrett said, frowning. Athia looked at Kajios who was talking to the other girls and joined in. a waitress walked by with a platter held over her head with ten mugs balanced on it. Secrett back into her and all ten of the mugs toppled onto the several girls that sat around Kajios. They squealed irritably as Kajios chuckled. They looked at Secrett furiously.

“You klutz,” one of the girls hissed. Secrett glared at her, wanting to reach in her boot for her revolver, but she knew she couldn’t.

“Sorry,” Secrett muttered. Athia smiled and got up, walking over to the bar. Secrett walked over with her.

“I’m going back to my apartment,” she said standing next to Athia. Athia looked at her with misunderstanding.

“Why?” She said taking a sip of her beer.

“I just don’t belong here is all,” Athia nodded and handed her a piece of paper. “This is my new apartment. My dad let me move out and I got a room right beneath yours,”

“I’ll be late so don’t wait up for me,” Secrett said walking away. As she walked out the doors of the bar she noticed that Kajios was gone.

Secrett crossed the street and headed towards her apartment building. She passed it and kept walking up the street up another platform down a deserted street. Wilted trees tangled together in chains that lead to a wrought iron fence. Enclosed was a graveyard, but people weren’t buried there. Instead of bodies there were robots that were never finished. It was more like a junkyard than a cemetery. It belonged to Secrett and her mother when Secrett was a little girl. They had made robots that never seemed to work and then dumped them there.

Secrett opened the gate. It creaked open on its hinges and she walked in. Disassembled robot limbs lay scattered across the flat terrain. The clear blue sky instantly changed to a dull gray as she walked farther back into the graveyard.

Secrett maneuvered around a few metal tombstones and slumped down against a large tombstone that was the size of a small wall. Sketched in letters were the experiment numbers of the robots that were in the pile five feet away. She looked up into the gray-orange tinted clouds that began to let down a drizzle of rain.

Secrett looked up. An indescribable sucking sound that revolted Secrett into the most utter disgust she had felt in her life came from behind the tombstone. She slid her legs in close to get up and look behind her, but as soon as her shoe made the crunch of the gravel the sound stopped. Her heart began racing. The first thing that came to mind was a robber, but what would a thief be doing in here?

The revolting sucking sound began again and Secrett quietly peered around the corner of the tombstone. She saw the back of a man with a long burn scar that traveled from his jaw to his shoulder. Instantly she knew it was a vampire and quickly pressed herself against the tombstone. He had been sucking the blood of one of the girls she had seen at the bar with Athia. It was the blond headed one.

Secrett quietly edged around to the other side of the tombstone to try and get a glimpse of the vampire’s face. She silently looked around the edge and was disappointed. The vampire was tilted at an angle on the girl’s neck so that she couldn’t see his face.

There was a low hissing sound and Secrett stopped breathing. Her cheeks flushed read and chill ran down her spine. She didn’t want to save the girl, but she knew she would have to.

When Secrett went to look behind the tombstone again her boot knocked into a tin can as she turned. It skipped across the flat dusty gravel into another junk pile. The loud clanking sound echoed for a while until it finally stopped.

“Dammit,” she muttered. She quickly reached into her boot and pulled out her revolver and silently peered around the tombstone for what seemed the millionth time. The girl lay in a twisted position with all her limps limp, except for her head which was slightly decapitated.

Secrett was sure she had seen worse, but it still sent a sickly feeling into the pit of the stomach. She slowly turned around where something caught her eye. She looked far off to her left were a dark figure stood. She felt him staring at her so she stared back. Both of them stood still for a while. Secrett lived a year in a minute, until she blinked. As soon as her eyes opened the man was gone.

Review

Wow, wasn't expecting vampires.
OK I admit I'm not a vampire fan. Actually I don't like 'em at all, but that's my opinion.
Now I have an idea of what's going to happen. I won't say because I'm probably wrong. You have an interesting plot going here. Keep at it. Vampires nowadays are so overused but I think you've got something original here.
Good luck with your writing.
