Chapter one A painful past
I walked to the rendezvous point with six men behind me all relying on me to guide them safely there. I was cautious in the dirty and foggy compound maybe a little too cautious in some people's perspective. But I had the right to be this way, There was an accident about four weeks back. My company and I were taking recon of a old warehouse that we had taken control of. But little did we know there was a fail safe mechanism they had installed. As we came through the back it hit me like a bullet. The ever so strong smell of acid and C4 along with other explosives.
I motioned for the others to stop and that's when I saw it. The flash of a scope, I counted silently and counted twenty two of them. Before I could warn the others they fired, the C4 ignited and I fought back, But it was in vain. I had no choice but to reveal what I was, I hid behind a storage crate and removed my pack as well as my jacket. I stood and my wings snapped open carrying me high into the air. Stunned the snipers followed my movements and lowered their weapons so I opened fire. The anger and sadness of the loss of my companions fueled my rage as you can see I have a slight anger problem. I hovered above them watching for movement once I was sure everything was still I glided back down and landed next to my belongings. All twelve of my companions died that day and it was my fault and I do not intend for that to happen again.
I closed my eyes tightly and shook my head trying to shake off the vivid flashback, a hand laid on my shoulder gently. It was my second in command and life long friend Darryl.
"Are you okay?" His voice shook with worry.
I smiled. "I'm fine. I was just" I paused choosing my words. "Thinking of a back up plan."
He looked at me and nodded. I knew that he didn't believe me but we didn't need to have an argument at this time. I moved on and motioned for the others to follow as we walked down a steep embankment. At this point we had reached the rendezvous point so we waited for the other company to catch up.
As we waited Darryl motioned for me to talk to him over to the side.
"What do you need?" I asked casually
He looked at me and sighed. "Alina, you can't keep blaming yourself for what happened that day. I hope you understand that. It is really wearing you down, you know worrying about things like that."
I looked at him and sighed angrily. He knew how much I hated talking about it.
"Well it was my fault. It was my responsibility to keep them safe and what did I do? I got them all killed!" I said in a hushed yell.
He glared at me trying to contain his anger. He took a deep breath.
"I am just worried about you Alina. Just promise me that when we get back to home base you will talk to someone about it."
"Fine." I said still slightly angry.
At this point the other company was four hours late and enemy reinforcements were closing in on our position. I looked at my company and wondered if I should just call in the helicopters to take us back to base.
I walked over to the radio and turned it to the correct channel. But I was not leaving I had to wait for the others. All of a sudden there was a loud yell.
"Shit! Alina we need back up out here!"
I nodded to the others and we stormed out guns blazing. We were terribly out numbered but luckily the pilots heard the distress and sent in six fighter jets along with the helicopters. I heard the roar of the jets and the whirring of the helicopter five minutes into the brawl.
I looked over to the fight we were losing and two people were injured if we didn't hurry up we were going to lose and possibly die.
"Fall back!" I screamed hoping that they would hear me over the gunfire.
As the helicopters landed the men and women fell back carrying those who could not run on their own and others providing cover fire. The first helicopter left and the second one landed just as the jets started to drop live rounds on the enemy. I motioned for the last six people to get on before I myself got in. The helicopter took off and I turned to face them I felt a sharp pain that felt like fire race up my leg. I yelled in pain and fell barley catching myself on the edge of the helicopter' s landing gear. The others tried to pull me up but my grip started to slip. I glanced at the ground.
"Take my pack." I yelled up to Darryl
"Why!"He yelled back.
"Just take my goddamn pack and I will show you!"
He reached down and took it.
That's when I let go falling felt amazing. The wind rushed through my ears and then I opened my wings and was yanked upward by the force of the air. My wings were jet black against the blue sky as I tried to catch up with the helicopter. When I caught up my wingspan along with the blades kept me from getting any closer than about thirty two feet away.
They all stared at me jaws dropped and eyes wide, I laughed at their expressions. I had always told them that I had a secret but they never knew what it was. Not even Darryl who had been my friend since preschool. We flew back to base and of course they all had questions as to why and how I acquired wings. But that is a long story and it is probably best saved for later.
As we stood on the helipad we directed the two injured men to sick bay and I had to speak with the commander. The pain from the gunshot still burned as the medics cleaned and dressed it. I no longer bothered with hiding my wings, After all everyone already knew that I had them so it was pointless. The only other person that knew I had wings was the president my parents didn't even know. That's when Major Thomson walked over to me, I groaned not wanting to speak with him but I had no choice.
"Sergeant, why did you not tell me about those?" He said gesturing to my wings.
"The president told me to stay quiet about it and only use them when needed."
He nodded.
"Understandable. Just keep them." He paused choosing his words.
"Keep them, uh hidden f-from the enemy."
"Yes sir." I said and saluted him.
He walked away and I sighed with relief. Then closed my wings tight to my back instantly missing the wind ruffling my feathers.
"That was easier than expected." I mumbled to myself.
I started walking towards my tent when all of a sudden a loud voice sounded behind me causing me to spin around and raise my gun ready to fire. I growled when I seen that it was one our privates who went by the name of John Smith. I lowered my gun and rolled my eyes at the boy.
"Private Smith What the hell do you think you are doing?" I yelled.
He cringed and raised his arms in a sign of peace.
"I-I-I'm s-s-sorry Sergeant, I uh didn't mean to uh startle you."
I scoffed he was just a kid no older than nineteen. I took a deep breath to steady myself.
"Its okay. What do you need?"
I asked and started walking to my tent.
He jogged to catch up then walked next to me.
"I was going to ask when I would be allowed to uh leave base with you guys."
He was eager to leave the base but he was not ready and hadn't been for a couple weeks now.
I sighed considering his question. we stopped in front of my tent.
"Tomorrow I will evaluate you. If you pass evaluation you can go with us on the next recon."
He smiled and hugged me catching me off guard. I froze then he caught himself and jumped back nervously scratching his head.
"Uhhh sorry about that."
He stumbled over his words. I smiled and laid my hand on his shoulder.
"Its okay John." I laughed lightly. "Go back to your tent. or go to Richard and ask him for a gun so you can practice for your evaluation tomorrow. John smiled.
"Thank you Alina."
I smiled back.
"No problem."
John saluted me and walked off towards the armory.
Chapter two The things you do when you love someone are not always painless.
I smiled to myself and walked into my tent placing my bag by the door and my gun under my cot and laid down covering my eyes with my arm. I was glad to be back at base, although the absence of gunfire made everything seem even more quiet. I frowned to myself and sat up just then there was a knock on the door.
"Who is it?" I asked.
"Who do you think it is?" A sarcastic voice called back.
I laughed, "come in Dean." I said still laughing.
He walked in and smiled.
"So I heard about your wings."
He smiled and i knew exactly what he was going to ask.
"Can I see them?" He asked.
"Well we need to go outside. There is not enough space inside this tent." I said walking towards the door.
But before I could even walk out the door a live bomb smashed into the ground in front of me. I acted quickly and snapped open my wings and dove straight at Dean knocking the two of us behind a metal ammo trunk in the back of my tent. I heard a loud bang that caused me to loose my hearing for a minute or two and the area around us swirled with flames. I wrapped my wings around the two of us in an attempt to protect us from the initial heat. My wings burned and I screamed in pain, I felt as if I had been dropped into the fire of hell, then everything went black. I awoke to gunfire and men screaming, I looked at my surroundings but all I seen was a blinding white light shining in my eyes.
"And so the angel lives." I heard a deep voice whisper.
The light shut off and my eyes almost instantly adjusted to the bright light of the desert. A older man probably in his early forties was looking down at me.
"Your lucky to be alive sweetheart. You have very severe burns and your flight feathers are badly burned,"
That's when I realized that he was not a doctor but instead he was a vet for the army's horses and other various animals.
"Can I still fly?" I asked terrified of the possibility that my wings would become useless.
He patted my shoulder gently.
"Only time will tell dear, On a different note the other soldier you saved, he is perfectly fine and is out there fighting right now. He wanted to stay with you but the major insisted that he needed to fight with the others."
I tried to stand only to be gently pushed down by multiple nurses that seemed to appear from the ground. Flashbacks from my early life flooded back to me in an instant. Images of cloaked men pining me to the ground while they tested my blood and studied my wings along with the tubes they shoved down my throat to feed me weird substances to see how I would react. So I panicked and fought them, one of the nurses came over to my bed holding a hypodermic needle and I yelled and fought harder finally breaking free from their hold. I gasped for air and was shaking with fear.
"Are you okay?" One of the nurses asked cautiously.
I gave her a hard stare and arched my wings in a defensive pose ignoring the pain that raced through them. The nurses backed away in fear. The vet Steve raised his hands in a sign of peace causing me to relax slightly.
"Calm down Alina, They meant no harm to you."
I knew he was right but my past was so terribly altered that now i could not trust doctors. I took a deep breath and relaxed my wings.
"Sorry about that." I said calmly and folded my wings close to my back cringing because of the pain.
Chapter three I almost lost you
At this point I felt terrible. I was in pain and I was very tired. But I was also worried beyond belief about the war raging on just outside the door of the ER, I walked over to the hospital cot and laid down on my side, Just then a soldier I knew by the name Felix ran into the ER looking like hell was on his heels.
"Doc, we really need help out here, we have thirty three wounded and no way to get them to you."
The doctor sighed and but his head in his hands. he sat down hard on the cot next to me and shook his head. I looked towards the door and seen two AK 47 rifles lying next to the door. I looked to the doctor and looked at Felix and considered the trouble I would be in if I were to grab a gun and run outside. But I thought better of the situation and stayed where I was. After all they don't need a wounded soldier out on the field slowing the others down or endangering others. Just then I heard a all too familiar yell from an all too familiar voice.
"Son of a bitch! Help me goddamn it! I'm hit!" I heard Dean yell.
With out thinking I bolted out the door grabbing one of the guns in the processes. The sudden changes in light caused me to cringe and stumble back. But I carried on running yelling at the men to keep fighting. The air was rancid with the smell of gunpowder, blood, death and fear. I stopped in the middle of the main trail of the camp and crouched down then fired on the enemy. Just as I ran out of bullets I heard a voice behind me.
"Glad you could make it Sarge." Dean whispered with a voice full of pain.
I gasped and crawled towards him quickly. Why did I care so much for this man I wondered to myself. But pushed the thought aside once I was sitting next to him.
"Are you okay?" I asked in a frantic voice checking him for wounds like a mother would to a child who had a bad fall.
"I'm afraid not, I'm hurt pretty bad."He whispered.
I found the wound and it looked fatal. although it was a clean shot through he has bleeding heavily. I took off my shirt leaving me in nothing but my boots pants and my black bra. I tied it tightly and effectively cut off the blood flow. Dean's eyes were squinted shut while I did this. The pain must have been un-bearable. I touched his cheek lightly and he pushed his head into my hand, he opened his eyes and smiled at me looking down at my partially bare chest and chuckled.
"I highly doubt that what you are wearing is appropriate Sereant." He said with a smirk.
I leaned my head in close and whispered into his ear, "Don't act like you don't enjoy it."
He smiled and leaned in towards me and whispered,"Who ever said that I didn't like it."
I leaned in unable to stop my self and kissed him. He started by kissing back gently at first but then deepened the kiss. The kiss lasted for what seemed like forever when it was really just a few seconds. I always knew that we would end up together and everyone in the camp was waiting for it to happen but I never knew when, so this was the beginning of a long awaited relationship everyone was expecting, even though relationships were somewhat banned in war. We both pulled back trying to catch our breath Dean looked at me and smiled at me .
"That was definitely worth waiting for." He said with a light chuckle.
I smiled back and sat next to him and leaned my head into the curve of his neck. He raised his hand and gently stroked my hair.
"So this means that we are together now." I said and looked him in the eye.
He shifted his weight cringing from the pain. He smiled, "I guess so."
So here we sat in the midst of war, so close to death and losing the fight and we were in love. After all they always said that the light of love can shine through the darkest of nights. I looked up at Dean and his eyes were clouded with pain. He was growing weak from blood loss and I needed to get him to the medic over fifty yards away. I didn't know what to do, the enemy's advancement was to strong. So we did they only thing we could do which is something I never wanted to do, we stood with our arms raised and surrendered to the enemy and they took us all of us away from the life we knew.
Chapter four The life of a prisoner of war was short but not so sweet.
Once we had surrendered they came and bonded our hands with rope that had razor wire on the inside ensuring that if we tried to escape we would die from cutting our wrists, They took our weapons they took any and all information files that we had and forced us to walk with no food and very little water for almost one hundred miles. finally we came to a camp at which they loaded us into trucks to transport us god knows where. they gave Dean the medical attention he needed along with some of the other men and women that had been injured but they wasted no time on those who couldn't be saved. When they loaded us Dean and I were loaded in the same truck along with Private Smith,Major Thomson. and the medic and the nurses from the ER. These trucks were definitely smaller than the ones that the american army had. They took us to a large city next to a railroad. They threw Major Thomson on the ground and he landed had on his knees.
"Kill him." One of the enemy soldiers said.
I gasped, and The man lowered the gun to Thomson's head. I closed my eyes unable to look at a man whom I had come to love and respect as a father be murdered by the enemy. The same soldier that killed Thomson looked around searching for other high ranking officers. I was glad that I no longer had my jacket that marked me as a sergeant major but also missed the warmth of a shirt. The soldier stopped next to me and smiled in a sick way.
"Hey baby, how about i take you out of your prison cell once we get to base. We can go back to my tent and have some fun." He walked closer kissing me gently on the cheek. I growled under my breath and drew up my knee sharply into his groin. He groaned and doubled over then stood and tried to strike me in the face with the rear end of his gun. I barley dodged the blow and he fell on top of me. Men all around us were yelling either for me to beat the shit out of the kid or for him to beat the shit out of me. I rolled on top of him and did the only thing I could do. I bit down as hard as I could on the back of his neck right on his spine. Just as i felt the blood seep into my mouth which repulsed me a boot came into view and hit me hard in my side. I rolled off of the soldier and stood suddenly a man came up behind me and grabbed my hands stopping me from making another attack. when the solder I beat up stood he glared at me and strode towards me putting a knife to my throat. Just to be reprimanded by his top officer. I smiled seductively at the man and walked over to him and leaned close to his ear.
"Touch me again and I will remove what makes you a man." His body went stiff and he stared at me in disbelief as I was loaded on to the train.
They loaded us all up in just one car but we fit somewhat nicely most of the soldiers were gone on recon and other missions when we were attacked so there were only about sixty two of us in the car and it was a rather comfortable fit. After we were loaded up they took off and our car was armed with two soldiers armed with guns. Everyone was terrified and they were very stressed. Dean tapped my shoulder.
"What?" I asked curiously.
"You should sing. To uhh calm them all down. I looked at the men and women and seen terrified eyes staring back at me. They were relying on me to help them and tell them what to do but at this point there wasn't much I could do. Since I would now take over. So I did the only thing I could think of I sang sound the bugle now. It was a fitting song for the current situation and the only one that came to mind so I took a deep breath and started singing.
Sound the bugle now, Play it just for me.
As the seasons change, remember how i used to be.
Now I cant go on, I can't even start.
I've got nothing left, Just an empty heart.
I'm a soldier wounded so I must give up the fight.
There's nothing more for me. lead me away.....or leave me lying here.
Sound the bugle now, tell them I don't care.
There'e not a road I know that leads to anywhere With out a light
I fear i will stumble in the dark. Lay right down decide not to go on.
Then a voice from on high somewhere in the distance,
There's a voice that calls, "Remember who you are."
If you lose yourself, your courage soon will follow.
So be strong tonight, remember who you are.
Yeah you're a soldier now,fighting in a battle.
To be free once more, yeah, that's worth fighting for.
As the last sound of the song drifted into the air everyone was silent. The guards spoke quietly to each other while glancing towards me periodically. They were speaking in their native tongue which I understood none of. Just then the train slammed to a halt and I heard voices yelling and gunshots. I looked at Dean and he pushed me behind him and took a protective stance in front of me. Just then the doors of the train car were ripped open and the two guards were shot. A man in uniform walked in and took off his helmet revealing who he was.
It was another soldier from my camp who went by the name of Red although that was not his real name. Dean relaxed and I stood up and walked over to Red. He saluted me then cut the ropes that bonded my hands and wrapped me in a tight hug. He pulled back from the hug and held me at arms length and with tears in his eyes he shook his head.
"It's nice to see you alive and well sis." He said quietly.
"Same to you." It was all I could say without crying.
He looked at me and tilted his head in confusion,
"Arent you cold?" he asked gestering to the fact that i didnt have a shirt or anything on.
"A little." I admitted.
He laughed lightly and gave me his coat. So after our tender moment we walked around the train car cutting everyone's bindings which trust me it wasn't easy cutting through the razor wire. so once we freed everyone they looked to me. I had almost forgotten that I was now in charge. I looked at the men and women that surrounded me.
"Lets get this shit train rolling and get back to camp."
So we put the train in reverse and headed back to where the trucks dropped us off and started heading back towards base. When we got there however there wasn't much left. They had burned it to the ground every inch of it.
"Shit. So what now boss?" Darryl said and looked at me.
I started walking towards the ruble kicking some of the pieces of burned rubble across the ground. I came across what used to be my tent and picked up my gun and brushed off as much soot as I could then slung it over my shoulder. Then looked at the men and women around me.
"It's simple,we rebuild and then we kick their asses."
They all agreed and started to rebuild our home away from home. It took three months all of which I was still ranked as a sergeant but they listened to me as if I were a master sergeant. On the third month the president made a visit to our camp and promoted me to sergeant major. That night I went back to my tent and took off my boots I turned out the light and laid down on my cot. I started to cry, three months after the death of Thomson and the attack I broke. Not because he had passed but because he would never meet his unborn granddaughter. The only thing she would know him by would be pictures and stories that her mother told her. Tears rolled down my face silently then I heard a knock on the tent' s door. I sat up quickly wiping the tears away and clearing my throat. I turned on the small oil lamp next to me.
"Who is it?" I asked surprised by how strong my voice sounded.
"Dean, can I come in?"
I smiled to my self. "Yeah come in."
Dean walked in and closed the door quietly. Then walked over and sat next to me on my cot.
"So uhm how are you?" He started slowly sounding almost nervous.
"Pretty good. You?"
I could tell by his slumped shoulders that things were not going the best for him. I put an arm over his shoulder.
"Dean whats wrong?" I asked him.
He held his head in his hands and shook it gently. I understood that he wasn't ready to talk about it so I pulled him into a hug and we sat there in each-others arms for what seemed like hours although it was only a few minutes. Finally he sighed and sat back slightly his face was stained with tears. He quickly wiped off the tears but his eyes glistened with tears that were ready to spill over. I sat silently waiting until he was ready to tell me. But instead of talking he just pulled me into his embrace and held me there crying quietly. I didn't understand why but I held him close hoping that he would take comfort in the fact that I didn't keep asking him what was wrong.

Great story! It was really creative and your description of the setting was very good. I also liked how I was able to picture what her wings looked like.
I only saw a few grammatical errors which could be fixed by just proof reading. A few of them are here.
I walked to the rendezvous point with six men behind me all relying on me to guide them safely there. I was cautious maybe to cautious in some people's perspective.
Make sure you say "too cautious"
Stunned the snipers followed my movements and dropped their weapons so I opened fire.
Don't forget the comma after stunned.
Other than that, great job and keep writing!

Captivated by the first sentence!

You have a talent for imagery and everything seems well thought out and planned. It's an interesting story that would be neat to read more of. The romantic moments were sweet and that just made it all the better.
There is very little to be said for your structure since it all flows very well together. Great word choice by the way it really kept the whole thing highly engaging!
Have a great day and stay awesome!
