What Makes You Feel Orange
Adam frowned at the sheet of paper before him. He was currently on question six, and it stood out from all the others. It asked: What makes you feel like your favorite color? The question before this one asked what his favorite color was. He had quickly scribbled the word orange.
Was the question asking what made him feel orange? He pressed his right hand against his forehead to ease the pressure. He quietly exhaled and dropped his pencil. Adam raised his hand in the air and waited for his teacher, Mrs. Champ to assist him.
A few moments later, his art teacher was by his side. He pointed at his problem question and asked, "I don't understand what this question is asking."
She took a second to read the question herself. "Well, what is your favorite color?"
He stared at the paper, just as she was, and replied, "Orange."
"Mhm... So, what makes you feel orange?"
Finally, he looked up at her, hunching over his desk. He gave her a look like, are you serious? She continued staring blankly at his paper, making him sigh internally. "Um, an orange?"
She shook her head. "No, that's not what it means. What makes you feel... orange?"
Oh my god, really, he thought. "Oh, okay. Thanks."
She grinned and patted his desk lightly. "Glad I could help."
Mrs. Champ stood up and went back to her desk. Adam picked up his pencil and waited for her shoes to stop clicking across the floor. Once they stopped, he shook his head in disbelief. He focused back on the question again. What makes you feel orange? The question would make a whole lot more sense if it said: how does orange make you feel? In that case, he would have wrote that the color makes him feel cheerful.
But what makes you feel like an orange human being? Was he perceiving that question correctly? If that's what his teacher meant, she was one insane lady. After another couple of minutes of running that question through his head, he gave up. He scratched his pencil across the paper and wrote down his answer.
It read:
Dear Mrs. Champ,
I read this one question over and over again. What makes me feel orange? I wonder, what makes you feel red, Mrs. Champ? We all know that's your favorite color. Maybe when you accidentally pass gas during class and your cheeks burn a crimson red? Or how about when you got a little bit too much sun over the weekend and your shoulders were covered with a stinging red? Before you ask your students these pointless questions, answer them yourself. Do I even have to elaborate further? Hope I helped you out, it would make me feel very orange.
Sincerely,
Adam H.
For the rest of the period, Adam finished his assessment. Throughout that time, several other students raised their hands. He had overheard them asking about the same thing - the tricky question number six. Several days later, Mrs. Champ finally finished grading their assessment.
He skipped to the sixth question and found a small note, written in cursive with her red pen. She wrote: Thank you for the feedback, Adam. However, you failed to answer the question seriously. Oh, and may I remind you - I am the one with the teaching license here.

Hello InfinteSnowfall,
Keep on writing!
Magenta here for a quick note on what you've submitted to the site a year and some ago. This story is quite random, if true, and very funny. What makes you feel orange? I loved her response to Adams note. Wow, this was well written and frankly, quite hilarious. I am glad that I don't have Mrs. Champ, or I don't know what might've come out on that paper. There were no grammatical errors or missing letter or commas, so there isn't a need for any reviews, really. But anyway, good job. This was nice little story. I would love to see you write some more humor stories and some more of your other works.

Hahahahahha. This story is so random and strange that it's very funny. I laughed especially when he asked the teacher what the question meant. Her response and his thoughts were so funny. This was very well written and very humorous. Now why in the world would there be a question like that in school, I don't know, but it certainly makes for a good laugh.
Keep it up!
Thank you! His teacher was kind of a... Unique woman. *shrugs* Who knows? Haha
Loved this one! You are a great writer! One question. . . Is it a true story? You are a good writer I certainly couldn't write this good. But you . . . your amazing! Hope you will write more! What does it mean what makes you feel orange? Well what makes me feel blue (My favorite color) Is a cloudless day with the bright blue sky and splashing in a blue lake with your best friends. That is what makes me feel blue.
Thank buddy (haha)!
Yes this is a true story. And honestly, I have no idea how to answer that question. This happened to my brother in school recently and he answered 'by eating an orange'. But of course, his teacher asked him for a different answer.

Blue is a much easier color to describe how you 'feel' rather than orange. Lucky you! Anyway, sorry this response was a little late. Thanks again for the feedback!
Hey InfiniteSnowfall! I just came by for a little review
. You've been so kind on so many of my stories, I just thought I'd return the favor!
I came across this story a little while ago, but I had literally JUST joined the site, so I didn't leave a comment. I wish I did though, because I had a lot of things to say about it.
For starters, this is HILARIOUS. By the end I was honestly chuckling. It's so creative and humorous, and those two things always make a great mix. Whoever the narrator was, I found him to be extremely funny as well. He gave off the impression of a very reasonable person with his feet planted firmly on the ground, and I just loved his reaction to the very illogical question that he was faced with. The note they wrote to the teacher just made me smile. I don't think I could ever even dream about doing something like that!
The title was also really great, it caught the reader's attention immediately, and you used excellent vocabulary and grammer. Overall, awesome work!
Hope this helped! Keep writing!
Thanks for the review! It's greatly appreciated. That's funny how you saw this when you first joined. Thanks again for the feedback!
Thank you far all the positive feedback everyone! Makes me feel all happy inside and stuff...
I don't usually review short stories, so I'm giving it my best shot!

This stood out because of the title. What makes you feel orange? An excellent question. I would have said petting a tabby kitten, feeling their fur would make me feel orange. Having a question for a title is a good way to get readers interested, as it opens up their mind for possibilities.
This made me laugh. Plain and simple, I laughed.
I would never be brave enough to challenge a teacher this way. You say this really happened? I understand that there must have been some changes made to the story, but I hope they were small because this really is such an excellent story.
All of the grammar was correct!
I don't know why, but this sentence stuck in my mind
I feel a little bit distant from the character. I don't even know what grade he is in, but I would guess five or six. Maybe elaborate more about him. The only things I feel I know about him is that his name is Adam and his favorite color is orange.
Thanks for writing this, I loved it!
yubbies21
Yay, I got you to review something out of your comfort zone! I will be adding more detail later on. I've been busy with review day and things. Thanks for the review Yubbies!
Hello, LittleFox here!
. I can honestly say this is one of my favorite short stories I've read on here. I have nothing bad to say about this so sorry it is a short review!
Let me say first that I really enjoyed this piece. I really like the simplicity of it. The student as an interesting attitude without being over the top, (I've been noticing a lot of that in writing lately.) and i enjoyed the bluntness of his response. I wanted to just reach in there and take his test away because I would have had fun answering a question like that
Thank you! I'm so happy that you believe this is the best short story you've read on this site. It's an honor, really.
Me again
Here now to review your short story. It caught my eye because I did a double take on the title! haha! You've already made me laugh which is a great sign!

Again, I will review as I read.
This idea is already making me laugh! The question you've used would be a great writing exercise for people on YWS! You should actually suggest it!
“Oh my god, really, he thought. "Oh, okay. Thanks." - This made me smile. He would rather have her go away than listen to her weird explanations.
I really enjoyed reading this. It was quirky, original and funny. I would only ask that you gave me a little more description of what the two characters looked like! I couldn't quite picture them in my mind!
HAPPY REVIEW DAY!
Olive <3
Hi Olive! So, the question would make a good writing exercise? What do you mean? Also, I'll be adding in some more detail into this later on. Thanks you for the feedback. I'm glad I made you laugh today.
Hi Snowfall,

ItsCharley here to give you a review! XD
This was so good, I doubt I'll have any compaints ^.^
I love how he writes that to his teacher expecially this part:
'I wonder, what makes you feel red, Mrs. Champ? We all know that's your favorite color. Maybe when you accidentally pass gas during class and your cheeks burn a crimson red'
I laughed so much here! XD
I couldn't help myself, my mother ran into my room cause I sounded like I was choking!
But I have to admit, what the hell does it mean when they ask you 'What makes you feel that colour?" Like I don't know what makes me feel green, well maybe a boat does if I get see sick, but you know, what else would in everyday life? But maybe thats the whole point of this short story? Hmm...
There's actually only one tiny little thing that I noticed:
'Oh my god, really, he thought. "Oh, okay. Thanks."'
If I were you I would have added a question mark after the word 'really' instead of just a comma.
But thats my opinion
It was great otherwise, keep up the good writing, and HAPPY REVIEW DAY! XD
xx
To be honest, I don't even really know what that question is truly asking. If you don't know, this is a true story. A art teacher asked my brother this question on a mini quiz. We still laugh about it to this day. Don't think too hard. It's a really silly question. :p
Thanks for the feedback Charley! I appreciate it!
Oh XD
I would have done the same if i were your brother!
Your welcome xx
Hey Snowfall

So I liked reading this a lot! It was entertaining, quite humourous and a very unique idea. It is a funny questions, and that makes for a funny title. And when I read the title I wanted to know what this was all about. So! It was a nice start there.
It was a funny read, and enjoyable all the way through. I like Adam, because he seems like a smart kid. And all around this was a fun read
Keep up the good work!

Thanks Deanie! And hey, you found my work, and got my username right.

Ash Strangelove here, and I'm going to review your short story named "What Makes You Feel Orange?" and let's just say

Groovy
I read this with my expectations in the air. I didn't really know what to expect. This was on the featured works for a while, but I never felt like reading it. But, I got my boomstick cocked and loaded about to shoot, and it hit!!
I really liked this. I liked the whole idea, as I never heard this type of question. It made me laugh and smile the whole way through, with a really good ending that blew it away. It was so well done, so funny, so so good.
Groovy
No cons, as it stapled it's name and presence into my mind.
Strangelove gives you....

Good job!
Keep writing!

Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
Haha thanks! That reviewing/rating system you got going is pretty cool. I'm happy this little story brought joy to so many people.
Definitely funny especially the last part. Adam seems like a real smart attic but I can't blame him that is almost the strangest question I've heard for a test even if it is for art class. It makes me wonder what my favorite color makes me feel, but is your favorite color orange? It's a strange thing to ask since I started thinking orange is a weird color and so would answer "Orange makes me feel weird"(which is a good thing since I'm always weird) ;} Have I mentioned I like the poem yet and that it's good? I f I haven't it is. :}
Thank you
Cleverly hilarious and unique. Perhaps two of my favorite qualities in writing.

The only question I had that didn't get answer is how old Adam is. As others commented, I guessed his was young, but his crafty articulated letter suggests otherwise.
I mean, you could add imagery to the whole scene if you wanted to, but it's great how it is. Not often do I come across short pieces that feel complete. Very intriguing title. Bravo!
Also that's hilarious that it's a true story.
Thanks you! I'm glad you liked it.
Hmm I like your title and your story.
Anyways, I really liked the story. I thought it was pretty funny when Adam wrote the letter instead of answering the question. I also loved the reply from his teacher.
There are no mistakes so that's good. You obviously deserve the literary spotlight.
Overall this was a nice, funny, quick read. Thanks!
Happy Writing,
Cgirl
Thank you! By the way, love your avatar!
Thanks and You are Welcome
It's good to be stupid!
The title of the story is very unique..even the story itself...The humour played out in the letter is very good...
The line "What makes you feel... orange?" seems to me as if the teacher is calling the guy Adam
an orange..liked it...
Also i liked the reflection of the fact in your story that sometimes teachers ask questions of which they are themselves don't know what the answers are!!!!
Good write:-)
Haha, maybe not all the time, though. And yeah, it really irritates me when teachers do that. Thanks for the review!
I thought this was a really interesting piece to read. At first I thought Adam was a young boy, but the amount of thought he put into answering the question made me think otherwise. I liked how we were able to understand how Adams mind works and questions, without knowing much else about him. I admire how the teacher was able to have a joke and not take his comment to heart. Overall I thought it was an enjoying piece to read
Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate it a lot
Haha, this was a funny one to read!
Okay, so my major nitpick is a lack of imagery and details. I think the story would have been more fun to read had you included some juicy descriptions and details to spice it up. I'm not talking outrageous things here, but perhaps his surroundings. What grade is he even in? Did it say?
..
Nope, I don't see a grade anywhere. I assume they are elementary kids, but this Adam did act more mature than I would've pegged, especially in the response.
That's my major issue with the work, so I suggest you work on intwining more details into the story next time. Other than that, it was pretty darn funny! I love that kid's humor, it's hilarious. Your grammar was consistant, as far as I saw.
Overall, I liked it. Keep on writing!
~ Iggy.
Ah... Imagery and vivid details do seem to be almost nonexistent in my writing lately. I used to be really good at it. I don't know why I haven't been adding it in my writing. Maybe that's because recently I've been liking the type of writing that keeps it simple and lets the reader's imagination run buck wild. I think adding some more detail would help though. I'll try and break this little habit, hopefully soon!
As for Adam's grade... This is based off of what happened to my younger brother, but I changed it up to make it more interesting. I didn't really think about his age. I left it up to you, as the reader, to picture him whatever age you want him to be. He could be a elementary student prodigy, or a high school student. Who knows?
Thanks for the review, Iggy!
Haha, I love this! It's so simple but short and gets the point across. I love the idea, that sometimes teachers ask stupid questions and sometimes people look too deep into things. Were you going for the three word rhyme, pass gas class, in the Adam's letter?
I feel like the first paragraph is a little choppy, maybe reorganizing the sentences would fix this. I don't think it works the best as it is because you state the important question, what makes you feel orange, and the next sentence is about the question before that. So saying his favorite color is orange might work better.
Beautiful work. Keep writing.
Oh, I didn't even notice the rhyming in that sentence until you mentioned it! Nope, I did not do that on purpose. I know I need to fix the first paragraph. I just wasn't exactly sure how. Thanks for the advice and for the lovely review.
