The new prologue for my novel, completely different to my last one. This one is much more relevant to the story, as what was said in the old one could just as easily be used in the plot to make it more interesting. This relates directly and perfectly to the mystery the first book holds. I didnt want to make it long, but i wanted to introduce the cause of the mystery, so hopefully ive done it justice. Im not expecting reviews or comments at all, i just put it up because i felt the need to post something honestly ^-^
EDIT: 27/8/13 - edited and resubmitted here with corrections.
Prologue
YEAR 88ES
Elansar the Bloodburner, ruler of the Empire of Narashar and last of the first Sun Children, was dead. As her body was burned in the greatest pyre ever seen, her once loyal servants, an Order of five lords, broke into her sealed vaults and sought to destroy the very thing that put the fire in Elansar’s blood. The Sun Stone lay dormant in the darkness. It was the late Empress’ wish that the stone be destroyed, but the Lords had their own way of dealing with her final will.
They boiled the stone and forged its matter into five items of a wash of golds and bronzes. Their beauty was mesmerising, but they were made for the Sun Children, and no others, should they come again. The items kept within them the ability to resist fire whilst also empowering those who controlled the flames. The Sun Children were known as the tamers of the fire within them.
They had one other thing about them which no-one was to expect, and it would be some time before it would become known.
More than six hundred and fifty years later, the Emperor of Narashar was given a daughter. She was always overshadowed by her parents’ love for her younger brother and older sister. She had bronze hair and flawless skin and eyes of pure blue. They were said to be sapphires, and so she was named ‘Sahfire’. She was given the crown by her mother, for it had a Sapphire within its crest, and it became an everlasting part of her identity. The crown was one of the five items of the Sun Stone. It had been kept hidden since the Great War of Gold that sought to find it centuries before.
Something then began to change within her. She felt the crown doing something to her fragile mind. As she started to grow, her mind began to contort and the beginning of all her troubles ignited. She played with fire, manipulating it through nothing but her own mind and will, but such abilities were not looked kindly upon. Something deep within the crown corrupted the girl’s mind. She began to speak to people no one else could see. She often woke up from her sleep screaming. For fear of what she was to become, her father exiled her. He knew all along that she was a Sun Child.
She spent her years being taken care of by priests and priestesses, servants of the sun. It was there in the Sun Temple that she learned much about herself, but she still had many unanswered questions, but they’d have to wait until there was time. The Order had returned to destroy the Sun Child and take back her crown that their ancestors forged, and they started by slaughtering her parents back home and dragging away her sister. The death that ensued was to act as bait to draw the Sun Child from where she hid. She did not know why they wanted to kill the Sun Children, but she couldn’t stand by and watch her dynasty fall. Even if it was not hers by the written word, it was hers by blood.
She had a duty.
Hearing the bloodied legacy of the Sun Children, Sahfire sought to redeem the name and she called all those loyal to her father, to her side. She was to defend the monarchy and tradition of her people. Many came to her call and soon enough a great war tore the country through east and west. Sahfire had a strong mind, but it was forever weakened by the crown.
Her own brother disappeared for reasons unknown to anyone but Sahfire herself, and thus ended her belonging to a family. Her thoughts began to grow dark. In the months that followed, her heart fell for her first love. She felt herself come out of the darkness for a brief moment in her short life, but she was not destined to be happy. Sure enough the night came when even he lunged at her with a knife and amidst the struggle she laid waste to his life. Her deep sadness began again.
In her sorrowful solitude she began to read into the history of her bloodline. She read of Elansar the Bloodburner, and her darkest and deepest secret. It was a secret that was to drive her to the edge of insanity. In search of something far greater than she could imagine, Sahfire went on a long campaign, but when she found what she was looking for it brought her only pain. The secrets she had learned haunted her thoughts. Darkness crept into her. Her sleepless nights and cries of mental agony shook the moral of the men who fought under her. Often she would go wondering into woods alone only to fall down and grovel in pain. Slowly all that she trusted began to turn their back on her. Many legions left her and tore the country further into pieces. Sahfire began to beg her crown for answers, but she was forever in pain. Ever she regretted her curiosity for learning the secrets her ancestor had kept away. They should have been buried along with the rest of her memories, but it was not to be.
Sahfire whispered to the crown gently, but her voice became ruthless in battle. Her wrath ended the lives of two of the five Argarian Lords who stood against her. Two Lords refused to face her and fled. One more stood in her way. On a day that became known as the ‘Black Morning’ she went into one final battle. Her sword was ablaze as she ran into the enemy ranks, soaking herself in the blood of her foes. It was said that with each man she killed she shed a tear of regret, but she could not contain her anger. Her veins ran black and her hair was said itself to be aflame. The once green lands her father fought to maintain were black and scorched, smouldering for weeks as the fires settled. She was rumoured to have made a statement, that she was to be looked upon as an example of taking vengeance too far, and that any Sun Children who followed after her should do all they could to avoid following in her footsteps.
Her days were numbered.
There were many stories about how she eventually became bereft of life. Many say she was dead from the moment her heart crumbled.
After her death the crown was taken from her and hidden once more. When the Sun Child rose for the fourth time the Order also returned, and their conquest began again. Rather than fight, the Narasharin blood fled the lands and braved the stormy seas to go back from where they came, taking the five items with them. They landed in a strange world of which a new Empire was built. Its name was Calamara. The Order quietly followed the Narasharin people and took the crown without anyone noticing.
For years the crown disappeared until by chance it found itself in the presence of a family in Aringalgar, the land where the legacy of the Sun Children began. A day came when a red sunrise dawned on the horizon – the sign that a new Sun Child had been born. Arinalgar went to war with Calamara with her own motives for ending the Sun Child’s life, but after two years of bloody warfare, the whereabouts of the Sun Child was still not known. Thousands died in the ‘Southern Twin Wars’ whilst they were hidden from the world. They died for her, and she had no idea what chaos her birth had brought. The King of Arinalgar was betrayed by his most loyal subject. He was assassinated, and the line of kings ended. In its place, his killer established a new republic, as a means of keeping the Order at bay should they return. Still the crown of the princess was yet to be recognised, and the memories of the girl who wore it were forever locked within…
But it would not be long before they were awoken.

Hi There! I'm here as part of the Green Lanterns Team to review your chapter for this fine review day!
I will review as I read so I can get all my ideas out as I go! Hopefully it will make perfect sense to you...
Here we go!
I absolutely love your opening paragraphs! I love that you've only given us the important information that we need to know to understand your story. You haven't overloaded us with useless facts that bog us down and make us bored! Do not change this about yourself please!
I particularly like the line, “They boiled the stone and forged its matter into ten items of a wash of golds and bronzes” - You have a wonderful way with words, my dear!
The only thing I would say about your third paragraph is to look at your sentence length. They are all fairly long. If you throw in a few shorter sentences then it will spice it up a bit!
Overall – I think this has so much potential. The detail is amazing! & its clear that I could ask you any question under the sun about your world you've created and you'd be able to answer me straight away.
Good luck! I'm looking forward to reading the next chapters!
Olive <3
Aww thank you
means a lot that you'd take time to give this a look! I should really stop doubting my ability to write i suppose haha. I've sorted out the sentence length in a revised version, so that's all tidied up now! Iv'e also always been one for info dumping so it's nice to hear that i might have finally stopped doing it!

As for asking me any question under the sun about the sun children? (i don't know whether that was a pun or not, but well played nonetheless) You can ask away! I seem to have a habit of going way too far into the background of everything. My appendices on the Writers Corner thread (specifically page 3 i might add) has what you might call a fair bit of information
So thanks again, it really is appreciated!!!
Hi there!
I write fantasy too, as well as science fiction, so I was intrigued to read this!

Firstly, I love your avatar
So to start off, I love the opening line, especially the detail, and it immediately made me think, "wow, what's the significance of being a 'bloodburner', what's a 'sun child', what's the empire like!" etc. Which is really good!
Just a small point, "but for no longer" sounds a bit odd to me. And "Empresses" should be "Empress'". There should also be a comma after "five grand items for the Sun Children".
I think the first section ends slightly abruptly, perhaps you could separate the last sentence in its own paragraph.
I would start a new sentence after "pure blue". I also think there's too much repetition of "began" at the start of the second paragraph of "The Crown".
This line: "...by slaughtering her parents back home and dragged away her sister." would work better as: "...by slaughtering her parents back home, and dragging away her sister."
I would make "She had a duty" have its own paragraph as this would make it even more effective.
In this line: "She felt happy for a brief moment in her short life, but she was not destined to be happy", you've said "happy" twice.
Also, here: "Her sword was ablaze as she ran into the enemy ranks, shedding herself in the blood of her foes", I don't really get what you mean by "shedding herself"? Should it not be "covering herself" or "soaking herself" or something along those lines?
You give a lovely image of her in battle, with her veins black, and hair aflame, but again, I would put "Her days were numbered" in its own paragraph. I also love the imagery of her heart crumbling.
In this line: "When the Sun Child came again for the fourth time the Order also returned, and their conquest began again" you have said "again" twice, try to avoid such repetitions as they interrupt the flow of the story. You also repeat "new" several sentences later.
The ending again seems to be quite abrupt. Perhaps it should be more like:
"Still the crown of the princess was yet to be recognised, and the memories of the girl who wore it were forever locked within...
But it would not be long before they were awoken."
Overall, I really loved this piece! The amount of detail you put in is very intriguing and really whets the appetite of the reader. I especially love all the names you have created, from Sahfire to Calamara and Arinalgar so well done for that! Your grammar and spelling is excellent, a general point, however, is that I think you should paragraph more just to break the narrative up a bit and make it flow even better than it already is. I love the concept of tracking the crown through history, it reminds me of the history of the ring in The Lord of the Rings!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and would most definitely want to find out more about the Sun Children and this mysterious crown!
Keep writing!

Hey there!

Thanks for your comments, I feel humbled by the support ive got from this, as I seriously began to doubt my own writing, so everyone%u2019s kind words have motivated me a lot!
I%u2019m pleased you felt so captivated by the prologue, it took a while to get right, and was completely different until a few days ago. I just thought %u2018its simple what I need to put in, just relate it back to the story!%u2019
My avatar is one of the Argarian Lords who hunt the Sun Children, so the antagonist of the story really. I put together a 3d computer model and rendered it, so it looks a little realistic.
In due time I will correct what has been suggested, but I%u2019m currently working on finishing the last chapter of the final draft before I edit it. However, %u2018bloodburner%u2019 relates to %u2018The Sun Children I%u2019 when I write it. Elansar was one of two twins. She and her brother were the first born Sun Children. I have a whole explanation of their storyline on my %u2018appendices%u2019 thread, but in short, Elansar felt she could do more with her ability to control fire than her brother, Daransar. She fled west from Arinalgar and established the Narasharin Empire below Argar. Eventually she felt that Arinalgar should be hers, as she was the first of the twins to be born, so her brother was effectively %u2018warming the throne%u2019 whilst she was away, which was a long period of time. An all out war occurred between the siblings in Arinalgar, and Elansar killed her brother, her own blood, by using her fire. She was hence named %u2018blood burner%u2019. She later regretted everything she had done and died a depressed old woman.
The Sun Children you%u2019ll realise the significance of if you read the novel itself, but that%u2019s the mystery of it! The Empire somewhat resembles Romanesque layouts with buildings and cities, though it uses a lot more gold and the buildings are built with a more European middle age style. Imagine the Colosseum, but built in grey brick and a lot of battlements and turrets with a large gatehouse. The armour is a mixture of Romanesque and middle age knights too really, so its interesting, but you%u2019ve got to remember the Empire is heavily associated with the Sun Children so theres a lot of references to them in the styles.
So that%u2019s the gist of it I guess!

Wow I love the sound of all this! Your vision of the adapted Colosseum sounds amazing!

Yep, I'd definitely love to read more!
Impressive! I'm Kay, and nice to meet you:) I love fantasy.
Which one is it? I suggest you fix that.Quick question-
I like the idea of the Sun Children and their destructive powers. I suggest in later chapters, you clarify more what their powers are and how the Sun Stone affects them. I also want to know why in this prologue Sahfire was given the crown when it had remained lost for generations. Also, what would have happened if she wore the crown and was a normal child? Would it kill her, drive her insane, do nothing? I think you should answer some of those questions as you go.
Heya
ok first of all yeah its younger haha, i have changed it on the saved version since. Sahfire was given the crown by the Sun Vault Guardians who endorsed the Sun Child, and soon after her father had them silenced, with the leader being executed. By the time her father found out, it was too late. Sahfire had already touched the crown and triggered the fire inside her. Since the War of Gold the sun vaults had been kept hidden by the Guardians, but no more.
If a normal child wore the crown nothing would happen. A Sun Child exists because they contain a genetic mutation which makes them weak against certain forms of radiation. the crown, and the other sun vaults give off radiation which speeds up cognitive function and through this, allows pyrokinesis to become possible. A sun child can only exist because they have the gene, and to make sure the Western bloodline kept on producing Sun Children, it was to be kept pure (or in the family, if you like) whereas the Eastern line, where Ember comes from tried to get rid of the omen. I dont want to go into this scientific stuff in a prologue like this, i wanted to let it have that magical feeling but also thr feeling that there was something behind it. And a prolonged interaction with the crown will cause mental issues such as pain, impaired function and hallucination. Hope that answers some
thanks for your comments too!
Thanks for the explanation! I just didn't know who gave her the crown, and figured if it did things to normal kids no parent would give that to their child.
This is a good story actually. You have all your punctuation in the right places, and your capitals are in the right places as well. The only thing I want you to fix and improve that I've noticed, is just make your paragraphs a little shorter. They are really long to me, and it kind of loses the readers attention and makes them a little bored. So just watch out for the length of your paragraphs.
But overall, I really think its really good! Hopefully you can add more!
