The Boy Who Broke Mirrors

(Chapter Five)

.

After visiting his house, I’ve decided against getting to know Preston on personal terms. It's not really anything he’s done, but there’s just something about him that makes me wary. Not necessarily a bad something, but one that makes me scared of what I might find if I dig deeper. That’s exactly why I need to get this over with as quickly as I possibly can.

“Is this it?” Aiden asks excitedly as we stop at the end of a driveway.

I notice the house’s front door is open and nod. “Yep, definitely it.”

I had a Maths lesson with Preston this afternoon and he left a pile of his AS Level coursework behind that he has to finish by the end of the Christmas holidays. Considering said holidays start today, unless I personally hand him the work he left behind, he’s got no chance of passing Physics. I better get some good karma for doing this.

With Preston’s incomplete coursework firmly in my grasp I trudge down the empty driveway, followed by Aiden. As I approach the open door, I’m not sure whether to knock or just stroll in as the latter seems to be Preston’s desired approach. I decide to knock, and as we stand and wait, we hear an indistinguishable One Direction song echoing from upstairs. I raise my eyebrows. This is a flashing red light of why I’ve chosen to avoid Preston on personal terms.

“D’you think he’ll let me use the toilet?” Aiden asks as I hear a door open upstairs. “You know I've had peeing anxiety since the incident when I was eight, and before you say anything, I know it was a long time ago and I should be over it. It's not as easy as that though, Effie, and I really need to go. If I pee myself in front of Zack Maddox I will literally have to disembody myself right there and then.”

Footsteps start bouncing down the stairs until Preston is standing in front of us with a one-sided smirk on his face and a lit cigarette tucked behind his ear. He seriously needs to start putting those things in safer places. I hand him his work before he even has the chance to begin any small talk, and I’m about to take my opportunity to leave when Aiden opens his mouth.

“Can I use your toilet?” There’s a shimmer of panic in his voice. “Uh, please, don't want to pee myself.” He jokes, but begins stammering. “Not that I’ve ever done that before, like, not even on a waltzer in a fairground or anything, not even then.”

An amused glint dances in Preston’s eyes as he laughs. “Yeah, of course. Down the hallway, turn left, and it’s straight ahead.”

The second Aiden enters the house and sprints for the toilet, I want to run after him and flush myself down said toilet because that sounds far less painful than having to be alone with Preston. It’s entirely irrational really because I see him every week for our Maths lessons, but there’s a massive difference between Preston the Maths tutor, and Preston the eighteen-year-old who made me tie his hands together with a shoelace. Then there’s the peculiar case of Zack Maddox, of course.

I relax a little when Preston doesn’t say anything to me and takes a drag from the cigarette behind his ear. As he places the paper I gave him down onto the stairs it’s hard not to notice the irritating, bouncy sounds of One Direction pulsating through the house. Why is he even listening to such an atrocity?

“You shouldn’t take music so seriously.” Preston’s voice snaps me out of my trance, and I’m beginning to worry that he can genuinely read my mind. “Enjoy it for what it is. Don’t get caught up in what it isn’t.”

I wonder if he writes down his pretentious words of wisdom beforehand. I bet he does. I bet he gets giddy when he manages to whap one out too.

Before I can reply, Aiden emerges into the hallway behind Preston and scurries himself back beside me. He thanks Preston for the use of his toilet and rambles on about something nonsensical for a few seconds. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the poor boy so nervous and embarrassed all at once. As I try to say goodbye to Preston and turn away, he stops me.

“Are you two up to anything tonight?” he asks. “I’m throwing a small party here, so if you fancy it--”

“Sounds brilliant!” Aiden replies before Preston even finishes his sentence, let alone before I have enough time to decline the invitation.

I open my mouth to speak but Aiden shoots me a pleading look. Either due to me becoming momentarily crazy, which I can honestly see being the case, or due to the feeling of Preston’s eyes on me, I don’t say a word.

“Great, come whenever,” Preston replies with a wink. “Bring some friends if you want, go wild.”

#

Several hours later when darkness has swallowed up our surroundings, Aiden and I are standing in the same place we were hours before. Delyth and a freckle-faced girl, Samantha, who I’ve never met before in my life--someone else from Aiden’s English class apparently--are also lingering beside us. Aiden thinks bringing more people along with us will seem more impressive. I’ve gotten to know Delyth pretty well recently, and she can be good company. She’s the kind of person who doesn’t care whether you’re listening to her or not because she just likes an excuse to talk, so she’s great if you’re feeling lonely but can’t be bothered to pay attention to anyone. I still can’t decide if she fancies Aiden or not.

As all four of us stand on the porch, I cannot express my shock at how the front door is actually closed for once. I knock it and wait. Aiden’s fidgeting beside me and he hasn't stopped rambling on about how stupid he made himself look in front of Preston earlier. This is his chance to redeem himself, so he says, and I really don’t have the heart to remind him that he isn’t really Preston’s type anyway with him having a penis and what not.

We’re let in by an unfamiliar olive-skinned girl, and as the sudden realisation hits me that I probably know absolutely no one in this party besides the people I’m with--well, two of the people I’m with anyway--I ask the girl for Preston’s whereabouts. She raises her eyebrows and scans me up and down in a manner that suggests I share the same worth as a pile of decaying shit, and then asks for my name. I give it to her, she disappears upstairs for a minute, and then returns having replaced the look of disgust with one of confusion.

“Upstairs, first door on the right,” she mutters.

There do seem to be people downstairs because as I glance over the girl's shoulders, I see small crowds in the hallway. It's all surprisingly a lot calmer than Robbie Morrissey's party and I don't even think there's any music playing. I glance around the hallway just in case, but no one looks familiar so we begin making our way up the stairs.

“This is so exciting!” Delyth chirps as she and Aiden skip behind me.

I glance behind to check Samantha is still here because she has about as much presence as a dead fly. It’s pretty unnerving really. I catch her pale eyes and she shows a nervous smile that sparks a pang of guilt inside me for comparing her to something so gross. As we approach the doorway we were directed to, an overpowering stench weaves into my nostrils, and I know exactly what the smell is within seconds. Before I can say or do anything about it though, Aiden and Delyth have entered the room. Samantha is still behind me.

I hesitantly enter to see Preston lying on a king size bed with some ginger girl attached to his neck via her lips. Sort of like a leech. Another girl at the end of the bed watches on in misery as if her sole purpose in life is to also develop leech-like qualities and suck on Preston’s neck. How attractive. There’s an Eminem album playing faintly in the background, and disregarding the six teenagers slumped onto the cream carpet there isn’t much furniture besides a wooden wardrobe and some bedside cabinets. Everyone in the room is holding rolled up paper with ignited embers, and judging by the smell I’m almost drowning in, it’s not just tobacco.

When Preston notices our entrance he jumps up, almost throwing his leech off the bed, and clambers over some limp bodies to reach us. I stare at the joint in his hand.

“Hey!” Preston grins as if he’s been best friends with each one of us all our lives, and turns to me. “Didn’t think you were gonna come, babe.”

Preston’s eyes are bloodshot, his smile uneven.

“Um yeah, I’m not sure about this... Preston, I--”

“Zack,” he snaps at me. “It’s Zack.”

Right, okay, so the personality disorder’s playing up again.

‘Zack’ nods towards the massive bed he was laying on as a gesture for whoever to sit on it, and Aiden jumps at the chance with such excitement I fear he might explode and disintegrate into a million glittery pieces. Samantha and I stay standing, but Delyth follows Aiden onto the bed. Preston seems to find Aiden’s excitement absolutely fantastic and begins giggling like a schoolgirl. I knew I’d regret coming here but I had no idea I’d regret it so soon into the night.

“Robbie, you ugly little shit, hand these guys a smoke,” Preston shouts as he flops back onto the bed in-between Aiden and Delyth.

I didn’t even notice before, but sitting next to my feet is Robbie Morrissey. He lifts his head at the sound of Preston’s voice, throws him some joints, and then looks questioningly at Samantha and me. I shake my head whereas Samantha nods enthusiastically, catching me off guard. Robbie hands her one and she scurries away to the empty corner of the room without saying a word to me. She sits down and lowers her head, her red hair hiding her pale face, and then begins smoking the thing as if it’s the sole item keeping her alive.

Robbie’s not actually smoking anything himself, he’s just sitting against the wall with a bottle of beer next to him. For whatever reason, that comforts me slightly. I’m glaring so hard at Aiden that I could start burning a hole into his head, yet he ignores my glare completely and takes the lit joint from Preston. He’s taken a drag within seconds. Everyone else in the room either seems to be unconscious or uninterested in me, so I slump myself down next to Robbie. I glare at Aiden one more time as I mutter to myself.

“When we get home, I am going to kick that boy where it hurts so hard that his balls will end up touching his tonsils.”

“Ouch.” Robbie begins laughing beside me, and my cheeks flare as I realise he heard every word I just spoke. He’s still laughing when he says, “Effie, right?”

“Yeah, hey,” I say with an awkward smile as I wonder if he recognises me. Surely, he must do? “How come you’re not smoking that stuff?” I ask as I notice a pile of neatly rolled joints in front of him.

He shrugs with a slightly crooked smile. “I’m not into it, I’m just the designated roller.”

Robbie then demonstrates how to make both the quickest and neatest joint I’ve ever seen, not that I have much experience in that line of work. I'm admittedly impressed with his skill. It’s hardly a quality that will lead him on to achieve great things in life, but hey, it’s something. Zack’s laughter suddenly cackles out, and it catapults me right back to the night of Robbie’s party. He may have redeemed himself since that night, but right now he’s Zack, and Zack makes me feel sick. I knew I’d regret coming here.

Judging by the wary look in Robbie’s pale eyes, every emotion I’m feeling is painted across my face. He nudges me and nods towards the bed where Preston’s leech is once again suckling on his neck. Aiden, on the other hand, is staring deeply at Preston's blonde hair and gently caressing his fingers through it. I’m sure he’s whispering into it. Delyth’s just sitting there having a very in-depth conversation with the lampshade above her, which is nothing new really. That image in itself alters my mood ever so slightly, and I giggle. Too bad it’s irritatingly short lived.

Aiden’s laughing now and it’s almost as grating as Preston’s laugh. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to smack my best friend so hard in my life, and as every second passes, the laughter from the bed increases in both volume and aggravation. My stomach acid begins bubbling as Preston shoves the ginger girl off him and tells her to piss off because she’s apparently boring him. The girl protests, calling him an arrogant dickhead in the process, but Preston just disregards her entirely and begins chatting to Aiden. With her face red with what I can only assume is anger and embarrassment, the girl gets off the bed and storms out of the room.

Who the hell does Preston even think he is? I swear he thinks he’s God’s gift to mankind, though I’d happily assure him that he isn’t. What does he think gives him the right to treat people like crap anyway? If I hadn’t been brought up to be so polite, I would pounce onto that bed and--A loud, sharp whistle interrupts my thoughts.

“Hey, babe!” Preston’s grinning at me. He taps the now empty space beside him. “How about a quick ten minutes?”

That does it for me. I can’t do this. I don’t even care how stupid I look or how much I’m overreacting. Before anyone can blink I stand up, bolt out of the room, and head straight for the only other room I’ve ever been inside in this house. The door’s closed but I don’t even care. Screw the door, it’s a stupid door anyway. I jump onto the childish bed with its childish bedding and slam the childish door behind me. Within minutes of me entering the room, I hear a quiet knock.

“If that’s you, Aiden,” I snap with my eyes locked onto the textured ceiling. “Please piss off and get back to your pissing marijuana with your new pissing friends and your new pissing boyfriend.”

I stay glaring at the ceiling as I hear the door open and close again.

“Contrary to popular belief, I can’t say homosexuality has ever eminently appealed to me.”

I finally turn my head to see Preston, whose previous sloppy demeanour has been replaced with a noticeably more sophisticated one.

“Jesus Christ, we’re Preston now, are we?” I sit up on the bed. “I don’t know who you think you are--neither do you apparently--but you have no right to be such a massive dickhead to absolutely everyone. People are still people, regardless of what name you feel like giving yourself, I mean, you just… just, ugh!”

“Look, I’m sorry, I occasionally get carried away.”

He shrugs, and something I’ve never seen before surfaces in his amber eyes. He actually looks genuine. He suddenly starts giggling again, which destroys the whole thing, but hey, at least it was there for a moment. A groan escapes my mouth as I lean back onto the bed and lie down. No wonder I don’t want to get to know Preston on personal terms, it’s just so much… effort. And confusing. Really damn confusing. I sigh.

“Okay, whatever,” I mutter. “Seriously though, have you ever had yourself tested for schizophrenia or a personality disorder? I’d highly recommend it.”

Preston sits beside me on the bed and chuckles so lightly that it almost becomes a faint, girlish giggle. “If only it were that simple…” He shuts his eyes and lies down. “The more simple we are, the more complete we become: Auguste Rodin.”

I don’t respond, primarily because I haven’t the slightest clue who Auguste Rodin is. After a minute or so I begin thinking a response would have been pointless anyway because Preston’s chest starts rising and falling more slowly. I think he’s asleep. That is until I hear a soft mumble.

“By the way.” Preston sighs. “Has anyone ever told you that your name sounds like an STD?”

“Oh, piss off!”

The only reply I get is a light chuckle disguised among another tired sigh, and within moments, Preston is fast asleep.

Heya! Gravity here for yet another review!
Let me just say that I'm going to be very sad when I reach Chapter 10. Very sad indeed.

he left a pile of his AS Level coursework behind that has to be finished by the end of the Christmas holidays. Considering said holidays start today, unless I do what I’m doing right now and personally hand him the work he left behind, he’s got no chance of passing Psychology. I better get some good karma for doing this.

This confused me. I had to re-read this section a few times before I got it. That being said, I think you could make this section a bit more clear. I thought maybe he left some Coursework behind for Effie to finish until I got to the end. So maybe try saying "He left a pile of his AS level coursework behind that he has to finish by the end of the Christmas holidays. Considering said holidays....[/quote] So yeah. That's that.

One Direction song echoing from upstairs. I raise my eyebrows. This is a flashing red light of why I’ve chosen to avoid Preston on personal terms.
All I was thinking when I read this part was: Yes Effie, I completely agree

“D’you think he’ll let me use the toilet?” Aiden asks as I hear a door open upstairs. “You know I've had peeing anxiety since that time I peed myself when I was eight, and before you say anything, I know it was a long time ago and I should be over it. It's not as easy as that though, Effie, and I really need to go. If I pee myself in front of Zack Maddox, I will literally have to disembody myself right there and then.”
Something tells me Aiden doesn't have to actually go. He's just snooping.

Footsteps start bouncing down the stairs until Preston is standing in front of us with a one-sided smirk on his face, and a lit cigarette tucked behind his ear.
FINALLY A LEGIT MISTAKE! Comma splice. No need to have a comma before "and".

Preston the Maths tutor, and Preston the eighteen-year-old who made me tie his hands together with his shoelace, then led me to his house and into his room designed for small children.
This is a run on sentence. I think you should've just stopped this at "shoelace". Also, speaking of said math tutoring, I wish you would've clued us in on the events of the first tutoring session.

“Are you two up to anything tonight?” he asks. “I’m throwing a small party here, so if you fancy it--”
Uh oh. I think we all know what happens when someone says there's going to be a "small" party.

I give it to her, she disappears upstairs for a minute, and then returns having replaced the look of disgust with one of confusion.

“Upstairs, first door on the right,” she mutters.
Haha. This whole part is just very amusing to me.

When Preston notices our entrance he jumps up, almost throwing his leech off the bed, and clambers over some limp bodies to reach us. I stare at the joint in his hand.
OH MY GOSH DOES THIS BOY JUST NOT LEARN HIS LESSON WHEN STUFF GOES WRONG? ERMAHGERD FOR REALZIES???? I CAN'T EVEN!

You see how starved for points I am, right? Do you mind me writing my reactions because there is literally nothing wrong with your novels. Seriously, you need to publish. But not before I finish reading because I don't want to have to suffer through you taking your book off of YWS and then me waiting to see what happens as you put your book through the editor and wait for it to get printed etc. etc. So please wait.

Zack’s laughter suddenly cackles out, and it catapults me right back to the night of Robbie’s party. He may have redeemed himself since that night, but right now he’s Zack, and Zack makes me feel sick. How could I just disregard what happened that night and come here so willingly? I am such a damn idiot sometimes.
I love the contrast between Zack and Preston. They're the same person but they foil eachother. I also like that the Cars bedroom seems to be who Preston really is, childish and little aloof where this room is who Zack is, his mask. Filled with drugs and people he doesn't really care about.

That does it for me. I can’t do this. I don’t even care how stupid I look or how much I’m overreacting. Before anyone can even blink, I stand up, bolt out of the room, and head straight for the only other room I’ve ever been inside in this house. The door’s closed, but I don’t even care. Screw the door, it’s a stupid door anyway. I jump onto the childish bed with its childish bedding and slam the childish door behind me. Within minutes of me entering the room, I hear a quiet knock.
And the foil continues with Effie metaphorically running to the room that represents Preston's character.

So, great job. Happy Writing!

XOXO,
Gravity

Overuse of the word 'piss/pissing' in this chapter. Effie seems to have grown staggeringly immature. This is an odd change for your protagonist and as a reader, it doesn't come off to great.
Use other swear words, mix it up a bit, more natural. I like Effie and her story, but I can't really tell where it's going at the moment. Hopefully the next chapter will clear that up a bit. xx :)

Well, the baby George told me to do this and I couldn't refuse!

Okay so firstly I kind of want to gush about how much I love Effie's voice. Really, I do. It's great. She's so entertaining, it's light and it's not a "look how sarcastic and witty I am" it's just a ... voice. It feels real. It feels like a real girl's head. And I really like that. Keep that up :)

I think my main problem with Effie though is her inconsistency, as I've pointed out in previous chapters. It's just very... one moment she's all fire-and-brimstone towards Preston and the next she's forgotten all about it. She regrets going to the party but she didn't really hesitate in going to it. I'm just finding this really hard to figure out. And I know that at times she seems confused as well, and maybe that's the impression you're attempting to give, but the impression you're giving is more that you're just writing her feelings at the time and then later on going "well that was weird" and then having her note it was weird. And it looks really unintentionally sloppy.

If a guy sexually harrassed you in the bathroom, then sober-him told you that drunk-him was weird and abusive and then sober-him would invite you to a party, would you just say 'sure'? It just seems illogical. And as I say, maybe that is intentional. But even if you do make her go along just 'cause, make sure she references it herself. Morbid curiosity, perhaps.

On another note, I really love Robbie. I want more Robbie in my life. Give me more Robbie. Right now.

(I do this thing where I get attached to the sideline characters if they're given the least amount of attention. It's hard for me if you ignore them afterwards. Please give him a love interest called Stella if you have no other plans for his character).

Also, the Aiden peeing anxiety thing was cute however I figured that if that was an actual thing, Effie would have known all about it. I thought it would be funnier if he was like, "you know I've had peeing anxiety-" "since you were eight bla bla bla" whatever and then he repeats the story again to Preston.

Also (this is just my Christmas list at this point!) I want to see them in one of her maths grinds. I know that sounds weird. However, I can't just buy this "it was different" thing, I need to know it's different. It seems silly to tell a story about Preston from Effie's point of view if you're going to completely cut out the main source of their interaction. But this is just opinion on my part.

Overall, I liked this! Your writing in this part was A+!

Hope I helped, drop me a note if you need anything!

May u plz be a author so I can get free autographed best sellers, ok. You haz potential.

So.. Aiden. I LOVE him. Dear lord, needing to use the bathroom before he pissed himself.. Gold.

I wonder if he writes down his ever so slightly pretentious sayings beforehand. I bet he does. I bet he gets giddy when he manages to whap one out too.

Best. Paragraph. Ever.

“Zack,” he snaps at me. “It’s Zack.”

Oooooh, Zack is back. This explains a lot. Weed must do something to him, make him have a split personality disorder. Or maybe he's always had it and the weed just brings it out.

Welp, that was a prett confusing ending, my dear Skinz. How is it that he's sober all of the sudden? Did his high just suddenly dry down? All of the sudden he is Preston? I hope you'll explain that more to the readers cuz we is confused. ;-;

But it was still super nice and I am excited for chapter five! Hurry up!

K ilu just keep writing!

Skinzette!

Disregarding his atrocious behaviour at Robbie’s party, it’s not anything he’s done, but there’s just something about him that makes me wary.

This is kinda contradictory; like you’re saying ‘it’s not anything he’s done apart from that thing he did’.

With Preston’s incomplete coursework firmly in my grasp, I trudge down the empty driveway, and Aiden follows.

Suggest followed by Aiden.

As I approach the open door, I’m not sure whether to knock it or just stroll in considering that seems to be Preston’s desired approach.

Suggest delete ‘it’ and reword or delete other bolded, as the meaning is unclear.

I decide to knock, and as I stand and wait, echoing from upstairs is an indistinguishable One Direction song.

I don’t know if it’s tenses or something, but this feels wrong. Suggest we hear an indistinguishable One Direction song echoing from upstairs or similar. If Effie can recognize it as a One Direction song, though, it can’t be that indistinguishable.

It’s entirely irrational really because I see him every week for our Maths lessons, but there’s a massive difference between Preston, my Maths tutor, and Preston, the eighteen-year-old who made me tie his hands together with his shoelace, then led me to his house and into his room designed for small children.

Because I’m slow, I thought ‘my Maths tutor’ was referring to another person we hadn’t met yet. Perhaps, …massive difference between Preston the Maths tutor, and Preston the eighteen-year-old….

Several hours later when darkness has swallowed up our surroundings, Aiden and I are standing in the same place we were several hours before.

I just realized that we haven’t seen anything of Effie’s home life. She mentioned her parents a few chapters ago, but we haven’t seen them. Because I never go out except to buy sweets and Lotus spread, I’m used to telling my parents before I go and meet people, but I’m assuming Effie doesn’t? Even so, I’d like to see something of what her home is like.

As all four of us stand on the porch, I cannot express my shock at how the front door is actually closed, and so we have no choice but to knock on it.

Awkwardly worded, and I’m not entirely sure what Effie’s saying. She doesn’t tell the others that the door is closed, or they don’t notice?

Aiden’s fidgeting beside me and he’s rambled on about how stupid he made himself look in front of Preston, or Zack as Aiden refers to him, all evening.

Unclear meaning. Did Aiden call Preston Zack all evening, talk about their earlier meeting all evening, or something else?

We’re let in by an unfamiliar olive-skinned girl, and as the sudden realisation hits me that I probably know absolutely no one in this party besides the people I’m with--well, two of the people I’m with anyway--I ask the girl for Preston’s whereabouts.

Olive skin is a bit of an odd thing to notice straightaway about a person? Idk, maybe it doesn’t matter, but it feels a bit random. Like ‘O hai LOOKIT MA SKIN TONE’.

I give it to her, she disappears upstairs for a minute, and then returns having replaced the look of disgust with one of confusion.
“Upstairs, first door on the right,” she mutters.

I thought having a party meant there’d be people spread out all over the house, not just in Preston’s room?

I catch her pale eyes and she shows a nervous smile that sparks a pang of guilt inside me for comparing her to a deceased insect.

Awkward wording. I really liked the dead fly line, and I think it and this would be stronger if you had something like sparks a pang of guilt inside me for my mean thoughts or something like that, but repeating the image about the fly weakens it.

Samantha is still behind me though, staring slightly.

Suggest delete bolded.

I hesitantly enter to see Preston lying on a king size bed with some ginger girl’s lips attached to his neck like a leech.

This makes it sound like the lips and not the rest of the girl are attached to his neck. Suggest reword.

I stare at the joint in his hand as he begins speaking.

Saying ‘he begins speaking’ weakens the impact of the dialogue. Suggest reword.

Samantha and I stay standing, but Delyth follows.

Suggest …but Delyth follows Aiden onto the bed or something, so it’s clear who she’s following.

Preston seems to find Aiden’s excitement absolutely fantastic and begins giggling like a schoolgirl for twenty seconds or so.

You can’t begin something for twenty seconds; you begin and then carry on, so suggest delete bolded.

I shake my head whereas Samantha nods enthusiastically, catching me off guard a little.

‘A little’ weakens the impact. Suggest delete.

Everyone else in the room either seems to be unconscious our uninterested in me completely, so I slump myself down next to Robbie.

Typo: our/or. ‘Uninterested in me completely’ makes Effie sound a bit whiny, like ‘Why aren’t they interested in me?’

He shrugs with a slightly crooked smile. “I’m not into it is all. I’m just the designated roller instead,” he says whilst demonstrating how to make both the quickest and neatest rollie I’ve ever seen, not that I have much experience in that line of work.

Rather long sentence. Suggest cutting out the bolded tag; that way the dialogue and actions stand out more.

Eccentric laughter booms from the bed, and I recognise whose it is immediately as it catapults me back to Robbie’s bathroom as Preston mocked every single bone in my body.

Awkward wording. Not sure ‘eccentric’ is the correct word to us, and suggest mentioning that it was at Robbie’s party, rather than his bedroom. Suggest Zack’s laughter cackles out, and it catapults me right back to the night of Robbie’s party. You don’t need to give details; we’ll remember as Effie does.

Judging by the wary look Robbie’s dark eyes are scanning me with, every emotion I’m feeling is painted across my face.

Suggest reword to Judging by the wary look in Robbie’s dark eyes, every emotion…

He nudges me and nods towards the bed where Preston’s leech is once again suckling on his neck, whereas Aiden is staring deeply at his blonde hair and gently caressing his fingers through it.

Too many ‘he’s and awkward wording. Suggest breaking the sentence down.

That image in itself alters my mood ever so slightly, and I begin giggling. Too bad it’s irritatingly short lived.

‘Begin giggling’ makes it sound like she’s giggling for a long while, which doesn’t fit with the second sentence.

---

Ohkay. Dangit, I’m intrigued.

Comments are mostly on the wording, but (I can’t remember if I said this before; sorry if I have) I’d like a bit more description. You do have description, but I’d like more—not necessarily more as in length, but a few well-chosen adjectives, showing colour or texture or lighting—details like that. I can picture the Childish Room, and I’m building up a picture of Zack/Preston’s house, but it has shiny mahogany-coloured bannisters and furnishings, and I’m not sure if that’s right. I feel like showing the inside of his house could really help with showing Zack’s character as well, so detail is important. Maybe he’s not a mahogany bannister kind of guy and I’m building up a completely wrong picture of him.

Sidenote: I'm fighting to not picture Aiden as Damien from Mean Girls, but it's really hard.

I really liked this chapter as it shows that the Zack/Preston divide is actually a divide and not just a one-off for Robbie's party. I'd like to know more about why Effie doesn't join in with the smoking, though. Even Samantha and Delyth, who looked like they were going to be sensible, jumped on the joint bandwagon, so why does Effie object to it so strongly?

Skinsssss! Here to review as requested, although you said I needn't worry about reviewing the other chapters, I hadn't actually read them yet so I read them then gave my comments/review of it.

Now onto the review, and as usual, I'll start with the things I liked. Firstly, I think your dialogue is superb and really sounds natural like all the time. Also, in terms of crafty things, I think you've got a good balance between interior monologue, action-y bits, and describing things, which helps the pace; plus your sentences are varied which helps a lot too.

As for critiques, I'll start with a couple of nitpicks.

Disregarding his atrocious behaviour at Robbie???s party, it???s not anything he???s done, but there???s just something about him that makes me wary. Not necessarily a bad something, but something that makes me scared of what I might find if I dig deeper.

I've underlined the 'something's', the repetition of these words messes up the flow a bit and is quite distracting.
Aiden???s fidgeting beside me and he???s rambled rambling on about how stupid he made himself look in front of Preston,

Tenses!

Now onto the other stuff. I've already mentioned this but why does everyone love Zac/Preston so much? It becomes even clearer in this chapter that the girls are absolutely head over heels loving him (not necessarily in love) and I still don't understand why. Maybe it's the arrogance that seems to appeal to some people, or his looks. Either way, I found it a bit odd when he shoo'ed that girl away because he got bored of her, and then she didn't even respond in anyway? It's a bit unrealistic, unless she was so buzzing, but I'd still expect *some* kind of response. And Aiden seems to like Preston too now? Sorry, I seem to have forgotten whether Effie told him about what happened at the party (sorry!) but if so, surely he'd be quite mad at him.

Something else that bothered me is that Effie just seems to be so much cooler than the other girls in the chapter, and seems to be the one that Preston actually likes. It almost reminds me of Effy from Skins and how mad everyone was about her over the other girls. But anyways, getting back to YOUR story, I think this is because you haven't given much character to the other girls, they're so boring at the moment and if they're really like this no wonder why Preston likes (maybe) Effie.

Lastly, this isn't really a critique as more a question/ comment to make. I now sort of get the whole Preston and Zack thing, I might be completely wrong but they ARE two different people. Not literally of course, but he definitely acts different as 'Preston'- being the academic, nice guy and then as 'Zack' who's cocky and arrogant. I hope that this is built on even more in the following chapters because it's a good touch. Something I'd like to say though is it could get slightly confusing, but so far you've done well!

All in all, this was a good chapter. We learn loads more about everyone and it adds to the story. My main issues are more plot related things such as why everyone loves Zack so much- although I'm sure it'll become clearer in following chapters. I hope this review helped, PM me with questions or if you'd like another review. I do follow the club, but do remind me a second time when you've got the next chapter out (I usually forget, which is why is took me so long to get to these chapters).

Keep writing!

This is definitely an interesting piece. Each chapter is better than the last chapter.
There is a little issue that I would like to address...There are several places where sentences just run on and on. It's a little hard to read and it's pretty awkward. I think that you need to slow down a little and just make shorter, cleaner sentences--it would be a lot easier on the reader to follow. What you have written now is good, but it can definitely be better.
Good organization...the dialogue and paragraphs are distinctly separate.
I really enjoyed the dialogue. It was really natural and realistic.
“Jesus Christ, we’re Preston now, are we?” I sit up on the bed. “I don’t know who you think you are--neither do you apparently--but you have no right to be such a massive dickhead to absolutely everyone. People are still people, regardless of what name you feel like giving yourself, I mean, you just… just, ergh!”
This is my absolutely favorite quote. This was just awesome.
I really liked your ending. It really leaves the reader thinking....
I'm really curious where your story is heading....

Keep on writing!
