In Mari's Normal Life

PreviousNext

We talked about who’s a ‘prep’ and who’s not all the way to the gym. When we went in, I saw the girls, said bye to guys, and walked over to them.

“Hey ya’ll, glad to see ya’ll got my text.” They answered with ‘yeahs’.

“Coach Galloway said Coach Smith wanted A-Marie to start off with warmups after we change clothes. After warmups, Coach Galloway wants us to come to the weight room. We’ll be working out with the football players.” I was cut off with cheering from the girls, took them a while before they stopped.

“Before we go over there I will assign everybody to a machine. If there’s a machine you’d like to get on come and tell me during warmups. If its okay with A-Marie.”

“It’s fine with me, I have a machine in mind anyway.” A-Marie said.

“Alright, so we change, warmup, then workout. We’re gonna warmup over there.” Pointing to the opposite end of the weight room to a blank area that should be enough room for us.

They answered with ‘yes ma’am’, all I did was laugh and followed them to the locker room. Well one of our locker rooms, we only use this one when we have to go to the track field or weight room. Our other locker room is by the lacrosse field, in between the practice field and play field.

“Hey Mari, I’d like to be on the treadmill okay.” A-Marie walked beside me and said.

“Okay got ya.” She didn’t even have to tell me which machine she wanted to be on, she’s a wanna be ‘prep,’ I would have figured it out. A-Marie acts like ‘prep’ but I’ve never understood why. Okay so maybe she looks like a ‘prep’ when she’s not in sixth hour. Her blonde brown stripped hair be curled, lips be full of lipstick and gloss. Which makes her moonlight eyes stand out. She wears the tightest skirt she owns, with a very low cut shirt, to show off the little chest she has. I understand that she wants to be a ‘prep,’ but why join the lacrosse and not the cheerleading team.

Once changed the girls went to go warmup and I sat on the bleacher to write down which machine to put the girls on. There are a total of twelve girls on the time including me. A-Marie, Kesha, Sally, Michele, Jamey, Zoey, Trina, Alexandra, Erin, Bella, and Red. Other than A-Marie, Kesha, Bella, and Sally the rest of us are pretty fast, so I was going to put them on the treadmill anyway. Alexandra, Erin, Michele, and Trina are bench pressing, spotting each other. Jamey, Zoey, and Red are just lifting weights. The girls on the treadmill, though, stay there the whole time. The ones bench pressing and lifting weights change machines. They go from there to, all of them together, being on the bikes. Even though they don’t need to be.

Me, on the other hand, I’ll be on two of my favorite machines. One where you have to sit on this little chair and grab a bar that’s over your head. The other has to with my legs. I sit on another little chair bit this one has a back to it. You have to put your legs on this square, well more rectangle than square, and push with your legs. I like a lot of weight, so the heavier the better.

When I finished writing down what all the girls will be doing they came over to me. I told them what they’re where going to be doing and we headed off.

The guys where already on their machines and working up a sweat. Walking in, they all look up at us. I seen Kyle over in the corner lifting weights. I spotted Gale closer to the front, he looked at me and smiled. I watched as the girls went to their machines and all the guys got back to work. I walked over to my first favorite machine, with the bar, put in my headphones and started working out.

After working out for about sixty minutes, I got up. Taking out my headphones, walked over to the girls weight lifting and bench pressing. Told them it was time for them to get on the bikes. I watched them walk over there as I walked to Gale, who was watching me.

“So, how the girls looking.” I asked turning my attention to him. He looked over at the girls on the treadmills.

“Good. I see why you put those four on the treadmills. They look ‘preps’ who don’t mind sweating.” Using quotation marks, Gale said.

I looked over at them. “Yeah well they mainly sit on the bench because they’re slow runners and I felt like making them sweat. Even though it doesn’t look like their sweating all that much.” I squinted my eyes at them. Yep, no sweat. I thought to myself.

He turned his attention to the girls on the bikes.

“They look pretty fast, why are they on bikes?” He asked.

My eyes roll over to them and I suppress a laugh.

“Yeah they have power in their legs, they’re the main players along with me. I put them over there so they can talk about the guys around them.”

They were on their phones texting each other. Like I said they were talking about the guys around them because they would read a message then look up at a guy.

“So what are you about to do?” Gale turned his attention to me. Instead of looking at him I looked at my other favorite machine.

“Well I just came over to check in, but I’m about to go over there and work on my legs.” I said pointing to the machine, then looked at Gale, but he wasn’t looking at me. Following his eyes, I see Kyle. Kyle waved and smiled. He had a cute smile, I thought. Not wanting to stare at him like I was already doing. I waved and smiled, then turned my attention back to Gale.

“What you need to do is go and work out with Kyle.” He says looking from me to Kyle and back.

If I could die from shock I would. I looked at him like he got hit on the head. But before I could ask what he meant, he continued.

“You didn’t notice him looking at you did you? Never mind.” He said before I was able to ask, again. “I noticed. While you were oh so focused on your machine and teammates, Kyle was watching you. I think he likes you May.” After he said that I didn’t want to hear any more of it, none.

He was about to say something else before I spoke up.

“Stop, I so don’t wanna hear it.  I don’t know how to talk to a guy. What am I supposed to do anyway walk over there, then what? You know what don’t answer that.” I know he wanted to though. “Tell the girls in twenty minutes they have fifteen minutes to change. I’m going to the track.”

Before he could speak, I walked off. Arguing with myself for telling Gale that much. I need a run, big time.

I put my headphones back on when I made it to the track and hit play. Freedom. Oh god how I needed freedom right now. I thought to myself. Freedom from what I said to Gale. Freedom from what Gale said to me. Freedom from Kyle and his cute smile. So don’t need to get messed up with a guy right now. I thought, again, to myself.

This story is rather interesting. It has a great storyline and tells the story quite plainly but I do have an issue. The story is not entirely exciting, I would have thought that the title was a play on words. Her life seems normal but is really abnormal. And the story is quite plain to those who are misled by the title. The title had gotten me believeing that it was a the story of a normal life of an abnormal girl in her whirlwind world. But all in all, this is a great story. You have done a good job.

So I enjoy how gradual things are going in this story. You do a good job of pacing their romance out between what you want to happen, and what would actually probably happen. As it stands now, I find it interesting that you're following the prodigy on the lacrosse team. With that said, I'd still like to say that preps, cheerleaders and so forth really do work out and are willing to sweat. Still, it's really up to you how you want to paint their picture. Just remember that preps will probably read this too.

As for the story itself, I would like to see a little more character development with the other students. I feel like they haven't really been given a chance to be anything but meer cats at the moment and people are interesting. Explore the different attitudes of the class with things like sneers and laughter. Don't just drop information about looks bluntly time and again, but really delve into how the scene looks. Are all the preps skinny blonds with nails out an inch or are some of them plump and some thin? Add these comments when you're talking about them idly, not just when you're identifying one individual. Spread the character descriptions out over the story and remind people, add new little things, like birth marks, etc. to create individual unique characters.

I love this, it's very creative, and easy to relate too. There are mistakes, but very few, easily fixable. I do see a few misspellings in your work. For example " I like a lot of weight, so the heaver the better. " I do believe you meant heavier. Every great story needs scenery, and I do not exactly know where they are. I'm guessing at a school. Also, describe the characters in greater detail to make a story more interesting. Other than that, this is a great piece with LOTS of potential. Good luck!!

Thanks and I'll work on it.
